such a cute little cooking spin-off from the main series. still v whimsical and creative w the fantastical foods and it’s fun to see more domestic moments between everyone.
Shockingly good for a cookbook, though I shouldn't be surprised.
This isn't just a plain cookbook with some splash pages of character art here and there as you browse through recipes. Witch Hat Atelier Kitchen uses the characters to great effect, essentially creating a little slice of life volume with the characters we already love as they cook and bake and create gorgeous looking food. Most of the fantasy ingredients have real world versions, and the recipes look delicious.
Shirahama's art is astounding, as always - no surprise there.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for the opportunity to read this!
I absolutely enjoyed reading this manga. The illustrations, the art looks good and the story is fun to read. There’s less to no unnecessary drama and thank the author for no unwelcome romance in the first volume.
If you are someone who loves reading about food/cooking with some witchy content, you will absolutely adore this manga. The characters (both adult and younger ones) are genuinely amazing. Looking forward for the next volume!
Thank you, Kodansha Comics, for the advance reading copy.
Characters are just as charming and endearing as always, but there isn't much Main Plot Stuff™ happening in these - it's like a cutesie, domestic cooking spin-off. Very chill, very adorable; would recommend if you've read + enjoy the main series.
I hate cooking but love watching people prepare food, and I love two weary good hearted dudes caring for their many adopted daughters but I hate too much plot, so this was perfect hehe. nothing happens and I could never cook this shit in a million years, 10/10 (:
A readable, sweet, and perfectly cromulent entry in the cookbook manga genre (with some strong smoldering subtext). I haven't read the original series but this made me want to.
*Thanks to the artist, publisher, and NetGalley for a free copy in exchange for an honest review.*
tl;dr A pleasant and beautifully illustrated food manga with low plot and high food value. Includes recipes!
Thoughts Even though this is a spinoff, there's negligible plot going on in here, so if you haven't read Witch Hat Atelier, you won't be that confused about what's going on. Hardcore fans hoping for more story might be disappointed, because this is, as it turns out, basically a really well illustrated cookbook. Art is very appealing with a cozy fantasy feel to it and some cool character designs. The food also looks incredibly good, and thankfully we get recipes as well. Of note, the recipes are all fairly simple, but I'd hesitate to call them "easy." Things like fried foods and custards have the potential to go wrong, and beginner cooks might find some of the recipes a challenge. That said, I wouldn't call any of these recipes too complex either, so this set of recipes would work really well for anyone looking to try something a little more ambitious without having to spend more money on extra kitchen tools or pricier ingredients. But if you're not here for the recipes, that's fine too! It's a pleasant book, entirely in line with the usual iyashikei food manga genre, great for anyone looking for a relaxing, low stakes read.
Thanks to NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for a review copy! All thoughts in this review are my own.
I adored this!! The Witch Hat characters are the best 🥰🥰 Reading this was the perfect mix of comfort and cooking inspiration. I enjoyed learning about magical ingredients. Quifrey and Olruggio’s relationship in this book>>> Perfect for any Witch Hat Atelier or food lover!
Meh.
