Understanding Corona Viruses: SARS, MERS, and the COVID-19 Pandemic

Rate this book
While many scientists believed influenza would cause the next great pandemic, no one was prepared for the new strain of coronavirus that appeared in 2019. SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, has infiltrated every country and put global public health and the economy at risk. Health-care systems have been pushed to the limit as protective gear, life-saving equipment, tests, and vaccines are scarce and in high demand. From the initial infection to the widespread impact on daily life, Understanding Coronaviruses examines the intricacies of SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19 and how they compare to previous viruses and pandemics.

"We humans act like we own the planet, when really it's the microbes and the insects that run things. One way they remind us who's in charge is by the transmitting disease."

"As long as the virus is circulating, we will not have 'normal' life. Instead, there will be a new normal, which is continuing to evolve day by day."

"The patients keep coming. Beds fill up, ventilators get parceled out, quickly, there are many more patients than equipment and space. Who gets the previous few ventilators?"

Thank you netgalley for providing an e-galley for review of Understanding Coronaviruses by Connie Goldsmith. I was impressed with this title. It presented the facts of the coronavirus pandemic as a constantly changing situation without bias. There are definitions, works cited, internet sites and other works of interest. This is written at an appropriate level for higher grades of juvenile and teen readers.

Great for middle school or high school freshman. I've had issues trying to explain how quickly things are changing. This book will help with those discussions as well as be a starting point for evaluation exercises and group discussion.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is the most comprehensive history of coronavirus designed for juvenile readers (high school age) I've read.
