Missing teenagers and execution-style murders vie for crime reporter Nichelle Clarke’s attention as she chases the stories into a web of intrigue and danger, determined to discover the truth at any cost.
Nichelle Clarke owes her boss a big headline. She gets her lucky break when a member of a notorious hate group is found with a bullet in his head, his body dumped in the woods. But then a boy from a local LGBTQ support group goes missing, and Nichelle can’t turn away from an old friend’s plea for help finding him.
Police across the state are reluctant to expend dwindling resources on runaways and murdered bigots, leaving Nichelle to take the investigations into her own hands. The number of missing teenagers climbs. Meanwhile, more dead bodies point to a ruthless serial killer with prejudice in his sights. As clues and dead ends pile up in nearly equal numbers and other reporters pick up the trail, the situation quickly spirals out of Nichelle’s control.
The killer is a master at covering their tracks, and they won’t stop until they’ve passed deadly judgment on every last bigot in the state.
Nichelle will fight her way through communities swallowed by fear to save lives…unless she loses her own in the process.
A murder mystery series taut with gripping, authentic plots that only a former crime reporter could write.
LynDee Walker writes about strong women who can’t seem to stay out of trouble. Her books have appeared on finalist lists for the Agatha and International Thriller awards—and once, on the weekly Amazon Charts US national bestsellers list smack in between two of her writing heroes.
LynDee is a member of International Thriller Writers, Mystery Writers of America, and Sisters in Crime. Before she started writing fiction, LynDee was an award-winning journalist who covered everything from ribbon cuttings and high school football to capital murder trials and high level police corruption. Her work has appeared in newspapers and magazines across the United States. She has written more than 20 novels and feels lucky every day to get to play with her imaginary friends for a living.
LynDee's favorite things are family, hydrangeas, porches, beaches, and books. She lives in Richmond, Virginia, where she is working on her next novel when she's not juggling laundry, children's sports schedules, and two very happily spoiled rescue dogs.
Dangerous Intent is the 9th book in the Nichelle Clarke series, which can be read as a standalone. I read this as a standalone because I was too lazy to read the other eight books first. That being said, I was able to orient around myself around Nichelle and her history rather quickly. It’s clear there’s still a few things I don’t know, but it didn’t detract from the plot.
I’m a sucker for police procedurals, so I appreciated the police procedural vibe even though Clarke is a renowned journalist rather than officially being on the force. I loved Clarke’s intelligence and determination. My only gripe with her character was her shoe obsession because there was a shoe interjection ALL the time.
As far as the murder mystery goes, I love that this story really dove into white supremacy and how infectious it is at multiple levels. This story puts the queer community front and center, and the reader is reminded that white supremacy is not only rooted in racism. I particularly enjoyed Clarke’s interviews surrounding this topic.
There were several great twists and turns along the way, and I found myself throughly engaged by the plot, characters, and pacing.
Thank you to Severn Publishing for providing a review copy. This did not influence my review. All opinions are my own.
Jumping into a series at book 9 is never easy, but this really works as a stand alone. Nichelle is a character that’s easy to root for, and I really appreciated everything she stood for.
She owes her boss a big headline. Does she dare take on the killers of murdered bigots and the missing runaways. They have the power, her life will it end if she pursues. She is out to get the story as tension mounts. A good plot readers will enjoy. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
Nichelle has had a hard time adjusting to life at a weekly newspaper. She’s used to scooping out all her competitors- but that’s hard to do when she only goes to print once a week. Joey is a lifesaver, spoiling her at home with coffee and hiking dates and all sorts of things. But she doesn’t really feel like herself. Until both Troy and Aaron call her with stories that make her feel like she should dig deeper. Is the story really there? Could they be related? Walker did a great job with the progression of Nicey’s career and personal life. I appreciated that all the best supporting characters were still a major part of the story as well- bob, Charlie, grant, Melanie, Troy. The storyline seemed very relavant to today’s issues. I’m looking forward to the next installment. Rounding up from 4.5
I'm so excited for another addition to this series, I love it. This is one of my favorite series. I wasn't sure the new book would deliver the same excellent storytelling found in the other books with a co-author being involved this time, but the story didn't disappoint! Another hit for Lyndee Walker!
I’ve enjoyed all of the other Nichelle Clarke thrillers but I could feel the difference in this one with a coauthor. It wasn’t the same and I didn’t enjoy it as much. I hope Lyndee Walker goes back to writing these on her own. I read this advance copy for review from NetGalley, compared to listening to the other books in the series on audio. Therese Plummer’s narration is incredible so, as long as she’s back to voice Nichelle again, it will definitely make the transition easier for listeners of the series.
When Nichelle gets word that her friend wrote an article for the campus newspaper, she doesn't take much notice until she learns the star athlete was benched for a failed drug test and her friend, Troy Wright, believes it was because he came out as gay. The more she looks into it the more she smells something fishy and sets out to lend a hand. She is also worried about Troy, who stuck his neck out to write the article and is gardening unwanted attention.
She attends a group meeting that Troy has organized and learns the other guy, Ben, who was helping hasn't been seen nor heard from in quite a while. He's one of many teenage boys that are missing, and Nichelle isn't met with open doors when trying to reach out to the parents of the boys.
When it rains, it pours, Nichelle tunes in to her scanner about human remains being found and a call from her favorite Detective Aaron White with a concerning detail about the death.
Suddenly, Nichelle has three stories she is working on and what she is learning has Joey concerned.
The story centers on bigotry and hate groups, I really enjoyed going along with Nichelle in chasing leads to solve the mystery. The ending was very heartwarming!
I received a complimentary copy and I have voluntarily reviewed this book.
I like the way Ms. Walker bases her stories on relatable issues of the day. They make you sit back and think about how the other person feels. The characters are realistic and brave. Nichelle Clark doesn't back down as she investigates two murder mysteries. I would recommend anything that this author writes, she doesn't disappoint. I received an advance copy of this book from Netgalley and I am voluntarily leaving my review.
If you are straight, white, and/or Christian, this book is not for you. It is chock-full of hatred for regular people. The authors even go as far as to capitalize Black and lowercase white. "Pride" gets a nice big P when used in the context of homosexuality, but not when used with "white." So, you can be proud of your gayness, but heaven forbid you are proud of being white. I used to like Walker, but now that I know how she feels about me, I will never read another word of hers. Go woke, go broke, you deviant degenerate.
I always enjoy this series and look forward to reading more Nichelle, her work and life. This book felt a bit different from others in the series. It could have been the subject matter which felt a bit in-your-face preachy, or it could have been the fact it was written with a co-author. It just didn’t resonate as strongly with me. I still love the series and hope the next book grabs me instead of playing peekaboo like this one did.
The book was fantastic. The word that resonates with me is powerful.
While getting to touch base with all our favorites from this series we also watch Nichelle dive into a case that while all the pieces seem to not converse…boy what a ride to the finish.
I love this author and this series is a favorite of mine. I really loved her powerful message in this book. I could not put it down, and as a parent man it really struck a chord. There’s nothing better than reading a book and also having it really help you look at things from a different perspective.
This series is a must read for those who love a mystery with characters that keep you coming back for more book after book!
Loved the series and the characters. I read to escape reality. This book was not an escape it was depressing. White supremacy and the prejudice against the gay community is not what I want to read about. I can watch the news and get depressed.

This is a wonderful addition to this thrilling series! Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story. Such a thrilling read that I couldn't put it down. Can't wait to read more of these. Recommend reading.
I was provided an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher. This is my own honest voluntary
I must declare that I am an avid fan of the Nichelle Clarke Crime Thriller series. I was hooked after the first book, and have thoroughly enjoyed each one, yet I really think Dangerous Intent by LynDee Walker and Laura Muse may be the best to date. How much more timely could a book dealing with homophobia and white supremacy be? The story opens with Nichelle, after a year still trying to adjust to the slower pace of the RVA Week as compared to the urgency and excitement of being the crime writer for the daily paper, the Telegraph. Here she has the opportunity to develop feature articles versus the hectic pace of daily reporting. The storyline begins with a young and upcoming college quarterback who publicly announced he was gay, and was almost mmediately benched on an alleged drug offense. From there, hold onto your seat. The reader gets insights into how being queer impacts young people, either afraid to come out, or have come out. There is a missing teen, an unidentified body found in the woods and so much more. This is a book that grabbed my attention from the first to last page. While it does provide some very informative information about homophobia and hate groups, it is never "preachy," nor does that information override the quality of the excellent stories within the book. It was a FIVE STAR, read for me, I highly recommend Dangerous Intent.
"I do know that kind of hate can eat away at a person until it makes them dangerous.”
When my wonderful friend Laura announced that she wrote and published a book, the first thing I did was preordering it. When it finally showed up in my Kindle library I read it as soon as I finished the book I read before that. Even though I'm not really a thriller fan, I truly loved this one.
Nichelle Clarke is a crime reporter looking for a good story but suddenly she has two different very promising cases to work with: a murdered member of local hate group and a missing boy from a local LGBTQIA support group which was initiated by her friend. Nichelle takes it upon herself to investigate both cases and finds herself in a swamp of hate and bigotry.
Nichelle is a great character: smart, driven, and courageous. I loved her determination to solve both cases. The supporting characters were loveable.
What was wonderful about this book was the way the LGBTQIA+ themes were incorporated and discussed. They are highly relevant and made plain the urgency to help and support the LGBTQIA+ community wherever and whenever possible.
Laura, I'm in awe! "Dangerous Intent" is an amazing debut and I can't wait to read more stories written by you!
This ninth book in the Nichelle Clarke series is just as good as the others. Nichelle Clarke is chasing two separate stories for the paper. One is about a local football player who is benched because of a bad drug test, or was it? He had just come out as being gay. While working on that she finds there are some missing teenagers from a local LGBTQ group. While listening to her scanner, she happens on a body, killed execution style, in the woods. While looking into it to see if there is a story, she finds out he is part of a hate group. Is that worthy of a storyline? While investigating both she finds a few too many coincidences. What really is going on? This just might be her biggest story yet if she can link them both. There is always a mixture of laughter, shoes, tears, and intrigue throughout the story. It’s very well written and keeps you interested with all the plot twists. And where’s her relationship with Joey going? He wants to meet her mother. And if you have followed Nichelle you know her mother is very important to her. Definitely looking forward to the next one in the series.
Dangerous Intent is the ninth book in the riveting Nichelle Clarke series by LynDee Walker. This is the first installment with a co-writer, Laura Muse, and it did change the flavor of the series a bit--- but I still enjoyed the book. I look forward to catching up with the characters I am invested in and, of course, checking in on how their love lives are going. So much to see! Nichelle is hot on the trail of a story that could be taken out of today's headlines on social responsibility, as much as with crime. A great lead draws Nichelle into the easy atmosphere of the college life-- but quickly pushes her towards personal danger. A football player with a secret is at the heart of her 'sports related' story that morphs into so much more. Action packed, fast paced, if a bit preachy, and perfect for your next read.
Thank you to LynDee Walker for allowing me to read an ARC of this story. This did not impact my review.
As always, the plot was intricate and unique. At least, I thought so. It's always fun to catch up with Nichelle and all the characters that made up this series. This one fit in pretty perfectly with the rest of the series and kept me reading. The series is done now with this entry and I absolutely will miss this journalist who was forever getting involved in the biggest crimes in her area. And because she was pretty much way ahead of the police in her investigations, she made a lot of criminals really angry-much to her well-being's dismay at times. The ending was an ending, but I think the author could write another one to catch us up on her character's life and of course one last criminal case? Just wishing. Hoping too! That is how good these stories are. Well done!
This book was a great addition to the series. Prior to reading this book I did a binge re-read and found that this new book was very consistent with previous character traits. The story progresses well and I found it refreshing that the main character Nichelle does not have everything fall into her lap as I have noticed that with other series. There are obstacles for her to overcome and adjustments she is making in her life. The plot was very well written and had me changing my mind a couple times on what the outcome would be. This is a well written and entertaining story. I received an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
I was only able to give this story 4 stars. I know social issues are important. Everyone should be aware of what is happening around them. However when I chose a book to read, I do so for my personal entrainment, escapism. I did not choose this book to be schooled on these issues. If I wanted, or needed more information I would select it. Lyndee Walker is over of my most favorite writers. Out of respect for her I did read the entire book. Hopefully her next story, if involves all the social issues that she had here that she would put it clearly in the descriptuoion of the book.

Dangerous Intent: A Nichelle Clarke Crime Thriller by LynDee Walker and Laura Muse was a very good read and a solid storyline. It was powerful and had an excellent main character. There is one quote in the book about why people believed judging the LGBTQ community was a "Christian thing to do." This was such a powerful statement.
I would recommend this book, and I would read more from these authors. A 4.5 out of 5 stars.
I hadn't read any of the other books in the series, but this was mostly okay to read as a standalone, though there were fairly allusions to stories and characters that I assume were a part of earlier books.
Overall, I liked the concept a lot, but I think the style and pacing of this type of story just isn't for me. It was a bit too slow for my personal taste, though there wasn't anything inherently wrong with the writing.
I’ve enjoyed reading all the Nichelle Clarke stories, however Dangerous Intent is by far one that I’ll be considering one of my all-time favorites for quite some time This story seems like the typical who-done-it, until it morphed into something much more. The various layers to the story made it one that was near impossible to put down and one I found very difficult to predict what was coming next. I receive d an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher and chose to provide this review.
I am totally hooked on this series and this author.
This author is amazing! When I start one of her books, I can't put them down! Into wee hours of the night, I read on amazed at the twists and turns, the compassion developed for the characters and the human interest stories! I barely finish one book until I've researched the next one to read. I encourage anyone to read her books...you won't be sorry...just be prepared to frantically search for her next book.
I absolutely love Nichelle’s character. I loved her strong determination to get her recourses and get answers to her questions. It was pure joy to read how she used her mind and street marts to get to the bottom of the story. I liked the story reads pretty fast. The story had a number of realistic moments to it that made the book all the more fun to read. I absolutely loved the entertainment as Nichelle and her team searched to uncover each clue along the way to capturing a killer.
I always enjoy a Nichelle Clarke story, and this was no exception. A year into her new job, Nichelle was still trying to find her footing, and what she really needed was an angle on a story that no one had already. A familiar character ended up providing her with a few possible stories, and the more she worked on those, the more twisted and messy they became. I really had no clue how everything would all come together. Another great installment in this series. I can't wait to read more.
This is such a good series. It is so much fun to watch the characters grow and change while Nichelle is chasing down a good story for her newspaper and solving multiple mysteries, often putting herself in danger to get to the bottom of the story. I will continue to read every novel LynDee Walker writes.
Nichelle Clarke is a writer for a local paper in Richmond VA. She tends to get down and dirty with her stories, she wants to have the best column of all the writers in town, she goes the extra mile to go it. She is faced with a murder of a member of the white supremacy, while looking into the disappearance of a young gay boy. Are they related? What a great story with a very surprise ending.
The main character has grown and did not take ridiculous chances. Even so the tension of the story was good. Better than repeated instances of ignorantly taking chances. The legalities were cleaner too. I really enjoy this series and would like to see Joey developed a bit more and don’t kill him off!
Nichelle Clarke makes a welcome return in this ninth outing written primarily by new author Laura Muse, although the closeness to LynDee Walker's style makes for a near seamless transition. The familiar cast of characters are reassembled and as always the story has a direct link to one of them. The plot centering around LGBTQI+ acceptance is thoroughly engrossing and, as always, Nichelle is such a likeable central character.
