GRACE ON THE HORIZON is the second full-length novel in The White Sails Series. Grace and Seamus, united by their past experiences, are adrift on a raft of shame in the sea of 1830s London society. But Colonel Hamilton has an additional package that requires delivering—Father Babcock—a priest wanted for murder. The church wants Babcock transported far from England to set up a new mission in South America.Battling his overprotectiveness, Seamus breaks his oath to always tell Grace the truth and hides Babcock’s identity from her. But the journey aboard the Clover is far from smooth sailing, and Grace suspects a saboteur. Trapped within the ship’s confines, she must learn to forgive her husband's well-intentioned duplicity and determine who wishes them harm—because now she also has her unborn child to protect.Is it an aggrieved member of the Admiralty who believes Seamus disgraced the service by resigning his command to chase after Grace? Perhaps Grace’s father, Lord Flint, seeking revenge against her for ruining the family name? Or a jealous suitor determined to ruin the life Grace is trying to build with Seamus?From the damp cobbled streets of London, around the freezing stormy tip of Cape Horn, and into the scorching dusty bush of New Holland, GRACE ON THE HORIZON promises another adventure on the high seas, bursting with action and suspense. Emma Lombard was born in Pontefract in the UK. She grew up in Africa—calling Zimbabwe and South Africa home for a few years—before finally settling in Brisbane Australia, and raising four boys. Before she started writing historical fiction, she was a freelance editor in the corporate world, which was definitely not half as exciting as writing rollicking romantic adventures. Her characters are fearless seafarers, even though in real life Emma gets disastrously sea sick.

After reading and thoroughly enjoying Discerning Grace, the first book in the White Sails series by Emma Lombard, I was excited to read Grace on the Horizon. I'd missed Grace and Seamus, and couldn't wait to see how their relationship had grown and deepened, and to accompany them on their next high seas adventure. The book did not disappoint. As with her first book, Lombard's descriptions of life aboard a ship (this time, an exploration vessel on a round-the-world expedition in the 1830s) ring true, and pull the reader in for the ride; it's clear that a substantial amount of research was done to get the descriptions (many of which are delightfully sensory) and dialogue just right. The plot is fast-moving and twisty, which I always appreciate, and ties up not only plot threads from this story but from Discerning Grace as well. But it also looks inward, examining the fallout from one of the worst things that can happen in a marriage, and how a couple moves forward from that. I'm missing Grace and Seamus all over again, and am eagerly awaiting the release of book three!

Wow! This book is phenomenal! It is gripping, intriguing, full of twists and turns, heart-wrenching, romantic, and so much more! Whenever I picked up "Grace on the Horizon", I was whisked back in time, and went on such an emotional journey with this story.

Emma Lombard is one of my favorite authors! Her writing style is rich in historical details, incredibly well-researched, vivid, visceral, and engaging. Every element of Ms. Lombard's story jumps right off of the page before the reader's eyes, and I often forgot that I was sitting on my couch reading as I felt like I was there in the past as part of the story.

I do not want to say too much about the plot specifically in this review, but, I will simply say, this book is very powerful sequel to "Discerning Grace". Grace is such a strong, brave, and intelligent woman who strives to fight for what she believes to be right, and does not let anything, nor anyone, stand in her way. The love that she and Seamus have for one another grows deeper and deeper, through both joyful times and devastating losses.

If you enjoy historical fiction novels, I highly recommend this book. I was hooked from the first page to the last, and did not want to put this book down. I am so looking forward to reading the third book in this series!

Thank you so much to the author, Emma Lombard, for the review copy of this book, it is incredible. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Please Note: This book deals with some very heavy topics.

Grace and Seamus have completed their first voyage and are hoping to start their next adventure but not without some twists and turns on the way. With the upcoming expedition financed by Colonel Hamilton and his private backers, Seamus is tasked with mapping a round-the-world voyage. But Colonel Hamilton has an additional package that requires delivering—Father Babcock—a priest wanted for murder. The church wants Babcock transported far from England to set up a new mission in South America.

A new ship, crew and family dynamics, can Grace and Seamus complete their upcoming voyage in peace and harmony? Will Grace find the peace she has been yearning for now that the abdominal Lord Silverton is out of the picture… or is he?

I couldn’t put Grace on the Horizon down. I just wanted to know what was going to happen next. Emma Lombard’s writing is so immersing and full of twists and turns. I think I’ll go as far to say as Grace on the Horizon is my favourite of the series so far, 100% cannot wait to see what happens in Grace Arising!

Fans of Historical Fiction, get on this series now!

Another great historic novel by Emma Lombard! ‘Grace on the Horizon’ is the second book in the White Sails series, after ‘Discerning Grace’. I got and requested an ARC of this book since I thoroughly enjoyed the first one, and I have to say not only does it compare, but it also surpasses. Excellent read.

The descriptions and the history value are again excellent, and I think there’s a great improvement in the story telling vividness, sometimes to a stomach-turning detail. But the word ‘detail’ is excellent to use here. The research done for this novel is just astounding (as it was for the first) and reading this, there’s a real informed view for the reader about what the time period of 1830s might have seemed like.

I especially appreciated the archaic terminology and concepts, which made this world seem very real. And like in the first book, I am again learning new things from reading this book!

And there’s something to be said about Seamus and Grace’s love for each other, their mutual losses, their happiness about each other. In one part of the book, with the pregnant Grace, Seamus’s love for his wife and unborn child is so emotional and almost tangible- that earnest prayer of his really touched my heart. It felt so real.

Apart from Seamus and Grace, I really enjoyed spending time with other familiar faces as well, namely and especially Billy, Toby, and Jim. It was good for the heart.

And I do love my twists! Surprises are again in store, and there’s something unseemly going on… If you enjoyed the first book, you’ll love this one! Onwards and wait for the next!

I read the first book, Discerning Grace via audiobook for a previous book tour and fell in love with the Historical Fiction element of the book. I thought it was a brilliant, informative story.

I loved how strong the main character, Grace, was and still is in book 2. Maybe even, more so than the last. She sticks to what she knows and wants and fights her hardest to get it.

I love how the characters from Discerning Grace continued in this book, it was good to see them back when Grace was out with Seamus.

Grace is such a strong, independent woman who has her mind set on what she wants from life and this book told her story perfectly. Emma definitely done Grace so much justice.

I thought this was a fantastic read, it was light but filled with lots of twists and turns. Grace’s adventurous side never left her. Tension was brewing in places but kept the reader on their toes.

Emma’s writing is so beautiful, she definitely knows how to keep the reader hooked to the book. I am definitely buying these 2 books in paperback to feature on my bookshelf because I just think they deserve it. They are truly beautiful and the covers are gorgeous.

Thank you @emmalombardauthor for allowing me a copy of you ARC. It was just as good - if not slightly better - than the first and again, I adored it… and Grace! And a massive thanks to the woman who arranges the most amazing book tours, @instabooktours you’ve went and done it again - thanks for having me.

I was so intrigued when starting this second book on how Grace's fired independence would develop now she is tied down to Seamus. Although, her character just continued to grow and now I love her more then ever.
In this book, you follow Grace and Seamus in their new life aboard the Clover. Despite many hiccups along the way, Grace adores her new life on the sea. However, the haunting figure from her past is never too far away.
There were so many elements of this book that I loved. But I especially loved the final chapters, where the raw emotions are let out. It left me feeling both heart broken and soothed at the same time!
Just like I was with this book, I am intrigued to see how Grace will develop even further in book 3. I can't wait to read it soon!

“This voyage was producing more twists and turns than the hedge maze at Hampton Court Palace!”

But Grace preferred life on board the Clover than having to put up with the gossiping, judgemental and unforgiving society that London offered. With the open sea before her, Grace feels free and with her dashing husband, Captain Seamus Fitzwilliam, by her side, what more could she want?

There was another reason why Grace preferred the open water to the stifling city. To her horror, Grace is informed that the vile and cruel Lord Silverton is still alive. Grace had thought that she had delivered him a fatal blow when he attacked her, but alas, somehow he had survived, and while he lived, London was not a safe place for Grace to be. However, Lord Silverton’s reach is long, and despite Grace’s determination not to think about him, she cannot escape the stark possibility that he may seek her out and have his revenge…

There is something utterly irresistible about a novel that depicts life upon the high seas. The relationship that develops between the crew, the dangers of the open water, and the excitement of discovering and exploring new lands, if done right, always makes for a compelling read. I want to feel the deck move beneath my feet, smell the salt in the air. I want to immerse myself in a world to which is totally foreign to me and I want to come away feeling like I have been on the most amazing of journeys without moving from the comforts of my chair. It is a tall order, especially when I also want the historical setting to paint a picture in my mind that is as authentic as it is telling. Grace on the Horizon (The White Sails Series, Book 2) by Emma Lombard ticks every single box, but what makes it even more enthralling is that the story is told, for the most part, from a woman’s perspective.

With an impressive sweep of the quill, Lombard has given her readers a story that is next to impossible to put down. This novel was everything that I had hoped it would be, and then some.

The unashamedly brilliant narrative captured my attention from the first sentence and continued to hold it hostage until the very last full stop. The cliff-hanger tension, the non-stop excitement and the vividly drawn picture of life upon the Clover was wonderfully depicted. There are, as to be expected, scoundrels aplenty, some of whom I adored, and others not so much. This is a novel filled with complicated characters, who are not always what they seem to be.

Grace was a character that I really became very fond of in Discerning Grace (The White Sails Series, Book 1). She was young, reckless, but also incredibly endearing. In this novel, Grace is older, not necessarily in years, but most certainly in maturity. She has been abused, beaten and kidnapped, yet through it all, she held on to one thing, hope. Having been disowned by her parents and with her husband’s career in tatters, Grace must find the strength to withstand all the dirty gossip that London’s high society throws her way. However, she is wise enough to know her own truth, and at the end of the day, she knows she cannot defend herself against whispered rumours and lies. When she is given the chance to once again set sail on the high ocean waves with her husband and his rough yet loyal crew, Grace jumps at the chance. It could be argued that by doing so she is running away from her problems, one might even go as far as saying it is a self-imposed exile and to an extent, I think that is one of the reasons the idea of once again sailing around the world is so very appealing to her. Indeed, when the voyage is coming to an end, she has no desire to leave the ship and despairs as she watches the crew return to shore. On the ship, despite all the dangers, she feels safe. The sea is her refuge, and the ship is her home.

The need for adventure runs thickly in Grace’s veins. She is not the kind of woman who would ever be content with afternoon tea and scones! However, the choices she makes, both in London and at sea, mean that her path will never be an easy one. An awful lot happens to Grace in this novel, some of which is good, but there are other things she must endure that are truly horrendous. If it were not for the fast pace of the narrative, Grace’s trials and tribulations would have made for some truly heart-breaking reading, but because everything in this novel happens so fast, there is no time to dwell on the heartache because she is soon running headlong into another dangerous adventure. In fact, danger and peril seem to follow Grace around wherever she goes! I thought Grace’s depiction was fabulously drawn and her character really drove this story forward.

There is quite a cast of colourful characters in this novel and each has their role to play, but little Emily and her pet chicken stole my heart. She is such a little sweetheart and thrives on what she sees as an extended family aboard the ship. I fear that she may well have inherited her parents’ desire for adventure away from the confines of what was considered socially acceptable for the time. I cannot wait to get reacquainted with her in the next book!

The historical setting, as I have already touched upon, has to be commended. Lombard has captured the very essence of this era. The many hours that Lombard dedicated to researching the historical truth can only be guessed at. Lombard has a visceral understanding of not only what makes history worth reading, but also what makes history entertaining.

If you enjoy quality historical women’s fiction, then this novel certainly deserves a place on your bookshelf. Grace on the Horizon (The White Sails Series, Book 2) by Emma Lombard is a riveting story and one that I enjoyed immensely.

I Highly Recommend.

Before “The White Sails Series” was released, I had a strong intuition that Emma Lombard was about to deliver something my sea adventure seeking heart would love. After reading the first book, I was certain of it, and when I finally read through her second, I had yet another confirmation. Again, Lombard excelled in all manners. Something I noticed early on was the ripening of the writing style, which was already of the highest quality in the first book, but as for any craft, practice makes perfect. Lombard’s writing style is not the only thing that has matured, her characters have as well. Although Grace’ stubborn nature has not softened, marriage, motherhood, and individual growth have definitely molded it. She is so much more considerate and reflective, aware of consequences. It felt right and natural watching her transform into an enhanced version of herself. The same factors have also changed Seamus’ rigid Navy man’s nature, even more so than Grace as in this second book we see Seamus’ hidden emotional side (which we all knew was there of course). Their relationship has also evolved. They are amazing parents, and you can see the beautiful shared burden of parenthood on them (the love, the worry, the exhaustion), yet they are still two lovebirds that go about life always hand in hand. It was excellent character development, and good character development comes naturally when you have elements that force characters to learn and grow. Grace and Seamus are forced to face numerous hardships... and that brings me to the “kill that character moment!” No, I won’t tell you the details, but know that Lombard’s writing was heartbreaking. I actually had to grab tissues. On a more uplifting note, I was happy to see some of the first book’s beloved characters returning in this second installment, and all the intentional references and connections to Jilly (his sister, his final resting place, and the Gilly Downs) were truly appreciated and needed, as Gilly shall always be missed. And finally, one of my most favorite parts: the sailing! Once again I was throughly satisfied with the writer’s depiction of the sea-fearing life. Emma Lombard is knowledgeable, and she never info-dumps her researches in her stories. Like a skilled seamstress, she sews them through the story and pulls you right in the middle of her scenes. I loved sailing on the Clover, visiting all the different locations, and the storms depiction were exhilarating! There is a particular storm in the story that really had me on the edge of my seat, not knowing if the Clover was going to be lost forever or if they would lose most of the crew to the storm. If you like a tale of one true love woven through history, sailing, and adventure, please do yourself a favor and start reading this series, and keep on reading until the end. I will definitely buy the last two books. Can’t wait to see where Lombard is taking this story.

This book really sold me on Seamus and Grace’s love for one another, especially compared to the first book in the series. I enjoyed Discerning Grace enough that I requested an ARC of this one, but I have to admit I was surprised by the improvement in writing and storytelling in this one. Some descriptions were so cleverly worded and vivid that I have to mention them. Truly, this book did much to inform my vision of what this time period (1830s) was really like in a sometimes stomach-churning manner.

“A bubble of mucous and blood inflated from one of his nostrils. It popped, and the red glob dribbled over his lips and down his chin.”

“She cackled bawdily, her rotting teeth spraying a reek of curled milk and tumorous disease that smacked him back a step.”

“...the heat beat down on Seamus like a despotic tyrant with a fiery flail.”

“...a lace curtain the colour of tobacco spit, and a moth-eaten rug.”

When a fat dead person was kicked: “The kick ricocheted across the body, the excess flesh wobbling like a whale carcass on the shore being pounded by the surf.”

In the first book, I was totally convinced of the love between Seamus and Grace, but this book left no doubt that they shared a bond that was incredibly strong. When Grace was pregnant, Seamus said a prayer asking God to look after her and the babe and it was so touching because he was so earnest. In fact, if I had to say one thing about Seamus’ love for Grace, it would be that it was earnest. There was something very pure and not quite innocent about their love for one another. It was probably this unadulterated love they had for one another that made me feel for them when they experienced losses. I did actually get choked up on a couple of occasions as their pain was on display.

One of the things I really enjoy about Emma Lombard’s writing is all of the new things I learn while reading. Whether it was archaic medical terminology like “wandering womb” or the meaning of “tow rag” or even just insults like “sphincter worm,” I find I am constantly exposed to new things. In addition, she uses language appropriate for the time which I found refreshing because it’s not often you get to use words like merkin or menhir.

I'd say it's advisable to read the first book in this series of two. Although the author alludes to the plot, it is important to know what happened to Grace and, indeed, to Billy, in the first instalment. It is mentioned, but perhaps not in enough detail for those readers who are meeting the characters for the first time. The full horror of Silverton and his hatred of Grace can only truly be appreciated, if that is the right word, by reading Discerning Grace (which I reviewed earlier in the year).

That said, once again Ms Lombard shows an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of the workings and working parts of a nineteenth-century sailing ship. The descriptions of the daily life on board and, more particularly, what happens during a storm, are incredibly detailed and realistic. In fact, in all her scenes, it feels as if one is not reading, but watching. She has a deft knack of writing all her scenes in such a way that you can, at any point, see clearly every person in the room and know how they are positioned and where. It's uncanny. Because of this deftness, she is able to manipulate the reader, making the pages turn quickly, which perfectly suits the fast-paced action. You hurry to keep up with the action and yet, you pick up all the visual detail along the way.

Grace was, in the first book, quite hot-headed, prone to acting first and thinking later. I'm pleased to see that she has grown up, and that marriage not only suits but has mellowed her. Does this mean her spirit is quashed? Absolutely not. She finds herself in a great many scrapes, but not through any fault of her own, and she calculates her responses carefully. It doesn't mean she doesn't end up in trouble though. Seamus, too, has become a little older and wiser, but he is hidebound by his loss of reputation and his determination not to repeat his past mistakes. Not easy, when others are in no mood to forgive perceived wrongs.

The plot keeps you guessing, the interludes when the Clover drops anchor at various far flung locations are descriptive and eventful, and the sense of strong friendships forged by years together on board is touchingly presented.

In “Grace on the Horizon,” Emma Lombard has extended the story of Grace and Seamus in her second installment of her White Sail Series. In her first book, “Discerning Grace,” readers are introduced to the cunning and independent Grace. She overcomes her circumstances to meet and fall in love with a man named Seamus.

“Grace on the Horizon” begins with Grace and Seamus living in London and not exactly loving it. Seamus is a talented sailor. He has a reputation for creating superb charts and documenting new lands. Sir Hamilton asks him to be a private explorer. When it is time to set sail, Grace goes with him.

The voyage is to last three years and while on the ship, Clover, Grace learns much about her past and her future. She gives birth to her first child on the boat and learns that the mysterious guest on the ship, Father Babcock, is not who he says he is. He cannot be trusted and as the voyage continues, Grace and Seamus learn of collaborations between Father Babcock and the trusted Sir Hamilton.

Grace and Seamus’ love is passionate. The voyage and adventures in new lands make them closer. All their love could not prepare them for the breach of trust they would experience. A trusted sailor assaults Grace, and Father Babcock tries to sabotage their journey. When they arrive back in London, they are met with a foe from the past named Lord Silverton and learn of Sir Hamilton’s conspiracy against them.

Grace and Seamus are interesting characters. Because I have not had the pleasure of reading book one in this series, I do not know much about how they met and developed their relationship. What I do know about them is that they are two people who are independent, strong-willed, and dedicated to their family. I can relate because my husband and I are the same way. We have quarrels like Grace and Seamus, but at the end of the day, we still love each other.

The plot of “Grace on the Horizon” is quite different. It is a love story, but it is set on the high seas. It has a level of conspiracy that creates interest and suspense. Overall, I enjoyed the story. The editing was good, and the author clearly knows her history. I would recommend this series to young adult and seasoned readers.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~.
Grace and Seamus return to London is full of disgrace, shocking news about Lord Silverton and the loss of Seamus' naval commission. However, they strive to forge a new life together but personal tragedy leaves Grace determined to leave London and set sail once more.
As Seamus' commission prospects are scarce, he must consider an expedition financed by Colonel Hamilton and his anonymous backers to carry out a global mapping exercise. He will be handsomely rewarded but the additional requirement to ferry Father Babcock, a wanted murderer, to a mission in South America makes him second guess the offer. With few options and some manipulation on Hamilton's part, Seamus reluctantly swallows his pride and accepts the commission to captain the Clover.
Grace feels betrayed when she finds out Seamus hid the dubious aspects of his new commission. She has to get past this quickly as other urgent issues need attention. She is pregnant with her first child, there are dangerous storms in their path and someone on board is determined that they never return home. Determining if it's one person acting alone or a group is one problem but they must also uncover whether it's a personal vendetta or actions on behalf of a third party. When accidents, blatant sabotage and abusive attacks occur mid-voyage, Seamus and Grace must band together to unearth those responsible to protect their lives, the lives of the crew and their unborn child.
🌟🌟🌟🌟. This sequel did not disappoint. More fun, drama and high seas exploration as before with the addition of some sexy frolics now that Seamus and Grace are married. Their relationship developed and they grew individually from their experiences and as a couple. There were tense action and life or death moments that provided a gripping and page-turning plot. As this voyage was around the world we got to see far off places and discover new frontiers alongside the crew. There was plenty of romance, intrigue and historically set drama to satisfy anyone.
I received a free copy of this ebook from the author in return for an unbiased and honest review.
Grace on the Horizon picks up three years after Discerning Grace. Grace and Seamus are settling into life as a married couple in London but there are problems. Grace finds herself excluded from high society and Seamus is struggling with this lack of progress in his Naval career as a result of the unfortunate events of the last book. So after a personal tragedy, they both jump at the chance of an expedition funded by the intriguing Hamilton. Hamilton convinces Seamus to take a priest on his ship to establish a mission elsewhere for a large sum of money but he hides the fact the priest is accused of murder from Grace.
I loved the fact Grace on the Horizon dives into Grace and Seamus’s happily ever after. Their love for each other still forms the heart of the story but the difficulties they face as a married couple are realistic and relatable.
Grace has grown from a feisty, impulsive teenager into a mature woman who isn’t afraid to use her fists or her gun when she has to. You can understand why chooses the dangers of life on the seas over the stifling restrictions of high society, her class, and her gender.
I slipped back into the story comfortably especially with the reintroduction of characters from the first book. It was lovely reading how Billy, Jim, Admiral Baxter, and Toby have fitted into Grace’s new life. A few of the strands from the first book are also followed through satisfyingly. Unfortunately, Silverton's dark and looming presence continues to plague Grace and Seamus over the years.
The world-building continues to be intricate and well described. The plot is fast-paced, with lots of action and twists.
"Your a warrior with a fighting spirit."
There are no better words to describe the ever brave independent and maturing heroine of Grace On The Horizon by Emma Lombard. In this historical fiction sequel to Grace Discerning (reviewed 10/29/21) we meet a Grace who has learned to take a breath before reacting but that does not mean she hesitates to respond to injustice or danger when necessary.
It has been three years since Grace and Seamus survived the high seas on The Discerning but adjusting to life on land has been fraught with its own turbulence. Grace is ridiculed by society and Seamus has his Navy career stalled because of their past actions. They jump at the chance for Seamus to captain a private ship sailing around the world. There is a price for taking the job that forces Seamus to keep secrets from Grace.
Aboard the ship we once again get the most impressive detailed descriptions about life on a ship in the 1830s. I smelled the sea air, felt the sway of the waves and my heart pounded when a storm capsized the ship.
Through tense misadventures, a mysterious passenger and some heartbreaking losses the growing love and trust between Grace and Seamus is what steers this story.
Characters that we loved in the first book (Billy and Toby) and ones we despised (Lord Silverton) are back and just like the first book there are astonishing twists. In fact, I feel this story slightly surpasses the first. The language of the era is ever present. I need to find a way to use the insult "sphincter worm".
Though you don't have to read Discerning Grace to enjoy this one, I would recommend doing so to get the full immersive experience of the rich full world created by this talented writer. I need book three ASAP!
Good Read
This second book of the series was categorized as women's historical fiction, but it was light on history and heavy on the love that made Grace's world go round. Seamus was captain of the Clover where Grace gave birth to twin boys. There were portents of tragedy all along the trip. Grace's attraction to men other than her husband was troubling. Telling him that she had exchanged a kiss with one such man was plainly unnecessary and served to hurt rather than atone. Things of that nature did not help the storyline, and I cannot fathom why the author gave it more treatment than Seamus' mapping and surveying of trading lanes and countries on his trip around the world. He was doing on a global level what men like George Washington had done on the North American continent. The private financing of the trip was a worry to Seamus, but he did find a lucrative wool business opportunity between Australia and ports of call back to London. A parent's worst fear was always lurking in Grace's mind, and it took away my interest in the historical aspects of the book. The book was unbalanced, if that makes sense to anyone. Maybe I, rather than the book, was unbalanced due to my copious intake of sugar. Now that I have finished off all the holiday goodies and I have sworn never to eat again, I might reread the book with a sober mind and find what so many readers found to be wonderful about this book.
Thank you, Ms. Lombard, for the read,
I was sent this ebook in advance, having told the author, Emma Lombard how much I enjoyed Discerning Grace. This book is ongoing from the end of Discerning Grace. I enjoyed it just as much. I love a spirited heroine, and Grace is certainly that. I feel some sympathy for Seamus, her upstanding, straight laced (now ex) Navy man. There is no steamy sex, but the love and desire - and respect, between the two is very well portrayed. I also like very much the camaraderie between Grace, Seamus and certain members of the original crew of The Discerning. In this book, Grace and Seamus can't wait to get back to sea, where they both feel happiest, but the past, that Grace has been led to believe dead and buried, resurfaces to put them in danger. It is on land, however, that the little family suffer their greatest trial. I felt so much for them all, the circumstances and their reaction to it so well written, I could easily imagine myself in such a situation. I felt Grace's grief with her. The book ends on a high note of anticipation, but I'm impatient for the next one, to follow their adventures and see if the past is really behind them. I have a feeling it isn't, even though it appears to be. A great historical romp with just enough romance.
This is the second in the series and the second book I’ve read by Emma. This one absolutely caught me by surprise with the level of detail. Yes Grace is back, Grace is sailing on the seas loving her best life for now…
In this book although you still have all the historical elements which I fully adore in a read. This had so much more characteristic layers to it. You completely see Grace in a whole other perspective which I loved what a strong woman she is and what passion she has in protecting her child.
I was so ready for the action that fully kicked in, not knowing who was on a mission to attack, who would survive, who would die? Would it end on a cliff hanger wouldn’t it end on a cliff hanger? I literally had heart palpitations the closer I got to the end of this book.
For me I felt more connected to this one than book one, as you knew the characters already you had a fair idea of who they were, what they were about etc. This one was definitely more pacy and up to speed. I loved how the author starts off with you not expecting anything then it going full sails ahead. (Like what I did there).
Anyway I hope this won’t be the last in the series. I need to know more. I still have a fear of being on a boat on the sea so it hasn’t beaten my phobia just yet.
Grace and Seamus are feeling shame because of their dire financial situation and Lord Silverton trying to ruin their reputation in 1830s London society. Grace’s desperation to leave London forces Seamus to accept a dubious commission on the private explorer, Clover. With the expedition financed by Colonel Hamilton and his private backers, Seamus is to map a round-the-world voyage. But Colonel Hamilton also requires delivering Father Babcock, a priest wanted for murdering his wife, to a new mission in South America. But the journey is far from smooth sailing, and a saboteur is suspected after an almost life-threatening accident. Now she also has her newly born twin boys to protect. Gone for 7 years, Seamus and Grace return to live at in London, but Seamus learns that his entire voyage was not paid by his benefactor, Hamilton, and he is in financial straits again. Also, their baby boy, Eliah, was killed in an accident on the streets and Grace goes into a long depression. Finally out of it, they begin to build a super ship for themselves with the proceeds from Grace’s Uncle Farfar. Their plan is to export wool from the ranchers they met in Australia and friend, Jim Buchanan, is managing. This is where the book leaves off.
I Loved It! What a fantastic second novel that continues the the tale of Grace and Seamus in the White Sails series. From the first page to the last Grace on the Horizon will keep your attention from the moment you begin their journey until the very end. It unfolds beautifully as it weaves a story from beginning to end with threads of mystery, adventure, heartbreak and the courage of two people who will face the future together. It's an action-packed rollercoaster ride as a diabolical enemy, from both their pasts, spins a web of revenge which could lead to their deaths. With visit from characters who you found a special place in your heart for from the novels. Emma Lombard is not afraid to take you out of your comfort zone with characters that are well thought out and come off the pages and pull you in this emotional ride. It's a well written romance that brims with tension-building twists and turns, heartrendering events, witty dialogue and one fantastic plot.The setting descriptions and action sequences are wonderfully vivid that brings the story to life and as the suspense builds and danger abound which brings this read together perfectly!
Grace on the Horizon
White Sail Series Book #2
Looking for a rousing historical fiction on the high seas?
Just like the bouncy, crashing waves of the ocean, Emma Lombard presents a story that has captivating and distinctive events that are unrelenting, in her latest novel, Grace on the Horizon.
Book #2 finds the main characters continuing their breathtaking journey as they encounter a multitude of thrilling adventures. The author’s figurative language and distinctive tone throughout the passages exemplify the setting of the 1800’s. Dialogue is vigorous and high-spirited. Characters come alive through vivid description.
Another well written plot that meets with love, friendships, excitement, unpredicted events, and a few despicable characters. I urge readers to read Book #1 first, to become completely immersed in Emma Lombard’s world of “Grace”.
This novel will not disappoint fans, and truthfully, it was hard to stop reading!
Well I said I'd give the sequel a read and here we are.
Anyway our willful protagonist Grace is back at it again with another adventure with her now husband Seamus, only there's a lot more danger and actions of Seamus rocks their marriage.
I will agree with everyone that there has been a vast improvement in the writing- great to see a writer improve their craft as they continue their story.
I don't know if I've just read too many Mills & Boon Historical novels but for me this seems to have really fallen into that category- so I personally got a bit bored. I feel like I've read it all before.
So alas this will be my stopping point for the series.
However it's not the determent of the characters- our leads are amazing and their actions honestly make much more sense and far more forgivable compared to what I'm used to so.
I just however have been left a bit bored with the series- but give it a fair shot if you loved the first one.
In the second book of a trilogy following Grace’s adventures, this time aboard the Clover, life is looking up for Grace and Seamus. As they embark on an extensive surveying trip, who is behind their new start and what are their intentions? After a horrid time for Grace back in London, she is relieved to be back on the high seas with new additions in the form of a baby or three. The Clover carries them to the far-flung shores of South America and Australia with some of the original, delightful crew members from the Discerning and some not-so-well-intentioned individuals. This second book is again full of exciting adventures, terrifying experiences, joy, sorrow, twists and turns around every corner of the globe they travel to. If you enjoy an adventurous, historical tale with a strong female protagonist, then this is the book to read.
Now that Grace and Seamus are married, the are getting anxious to be out at sea again. When Seamus receives an offer of a ship in exchange for a map excavation, he jumps at the chance. This time around Grace is pregnant with their first child, with her first pregnancy ending in miscarriage. During this trip, Seamus realizes something is not right, and some of his crew is working against him. But who is it. Who actually put up the money for this trip? This book will surprise to the very end? Not everything is as it seems. I loved this second book in this series. The characters are well developed, as well as the plot. Even though I was given a copy of this book by the author, it has in no way influenced my opinion and this is my honest review.
4.5/5
What a worthy continuation of the adventures of Grace and Seamus. I laughed, I cried and thoroughly enjoyed reading book 2 of the White Sails series. I found that the characters were more deeply developed and Grace's adventures much more believable in this book. I'm so glad we learned more of Billy's fate and got to spend more time with Toby and Jim. Definitely read this book but be sure to begin with Discerning Grace, the first book in the series. Can't wait to read more of Grace's further adventures.
Having loved Discerning Grace I had to read on to see what happened next & I'm so glad I did.
In Grace on the Horizon Emma Lombard has taken the story telling to another level. Grace, Seamus & the crew continue their adventures but this is a deeper & darker story while still keeping the humour & wit you expect from Grace. They face heartache & trauma alongside the expected drama of the high seas & engaging characters old & new.
With another book still to come I'm already excited to join Grace next time.
I thoroughly enjoyed the high seas descriptions of Grace and Seamus’ global travels. The author details the intricacies of managing a large vessel—no small feat! The many characters are deeply developed in this novel, and I could feel the emotions between the characters. As in the first book, there is no boring, predictable plot line. So many surprising twists kept me on the edge of my seat!
I’m thrilled there’s a third book in the series to come!
I am voluntarily reviewing this book after receiving it free from the author.
The second book in the White Sails Series does not disappoint. A cross between Horatio Hornblower and Outlander, the Fitswilliam exploits are enjoyable and sassy.
It is touching to see the young female protagonist of Discerning Grace become an adult, fulfilling the roles of wife and mother. Not only is this appealing to those of us who are no longer eighteen, it is a realistic romance that is beautiful in its reflection of our everyday - except in a thrilling setting. Get your hands on it now!
The second in the White Sails series sees Grace on a dangerous adventure where she has more to protect than herself. The story is full of richly described historical details that make excellent use of sensory imagery. The time and place are brought to vibrant life, making this an exciting read.
I haven't read the first book in the series, and I feel it would have been even more enjoyable if I had. This is a romantic story full of menace and mystery with cleverly crafted characters and settings.
I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.
