Being in the middle of a supernatural war was not her plan…
All Jane wanted to do was to fly under the radar in her senior year. Instead, werewolves, witches, mages, and all sorts of other supernaturals are focused on her. Some want her friendship, and the others? Well, some want her killed.
Keeping his Mate safe while trying to be the perfect guy isn’t easy…
Gray’s determined to keep his Mate safe, but supernatural enemies keep getting in his way. He can’t risk scaring her away and losing her by unleashing his full werewolf abilities. There’s no way Jane would ever claim Gray and his wolf as hers if he showed her the real Gray…right?
This is the second part of Jane and Gray’s duet. The first part, Witchlet Found, should be read first.
* 17+ due to swearing, sexual references, and brief descriptions of gore (werewolves…what can you do?) * Contains instances of & references to bullying episodes * YA/UF/PNR slow-burn, sweet romance with fated mates
Approx 129K words
Book 1: Witchlet Found (Jane and Gray duet - released Sept 3, 2021) Book 2: Wolf Claimed (Jane and Gray duet - coming Aug 23, 2022) Book 3: Dud Discovered (Liz and Ryken - TBA)
I don't tend to write reviews anymore but since I see such promise in this new author I wanted to take the time to jot down my thoughts. This will be a mixed review of book 1 and 2 but I will try not to spoil too much. I read the first book a few months ago and then reread it again right before the second book came out to remember the storyline.
The basics are a bully romance with an adventure/fantasy outline IE there is an overarching nemesis that carries from book to book and a journey to be had. You watch Jane (h) an eternal optimist that goes from being beaten down to realizing she is strong and embracing it. Jane is full-on a Marysue character. I like that character type, so it did not bother me but I know some really really hate it so just dropping a warning.
She meets her mate who instantly hates the idea of a mate and causes the whole school to start targeting her for bullying. It lasts for 2 years but you do not see much of it on the page. I would have liked to have seen more of the actual beaten-down part specifically when her mate has to step in and start protecting her (from afar). That journey was not as fleshed out as it could have been and probably would have added to the overall character development of both MCs. It verged on a tell instead of show style of writing but did not fully cross over and didn't happen enough that it made me put the book down. In fact, I devoured both books within hours so it definitely was NOT boring for me. The books are written by a newish author so there is what I call fluff in the book. Words and scenes that could have been pulled from the book and the book would have made the same overall impression. It tends to make books longer than they need to be but it's normal with new authors so it was expected and did not happen enough to make me not enjoy the journey. The bad guy was pretty easy to call early on but still threw me a few surprises with some of the other characters.
As always for new authors I automatically give one star bumped up so since this was a 4 in my mind it goes to a 5. I will be doing the same with book 1 I did not realize when I first read it that it was a NEW new author because that's just how well she built the world of her characters.
Specific things that I liked or didn't that others might or might not care about:
I liked that the H was not with anyone else after meeting the h even though he "hated" her. I liked the h's Marysue character type I liked that the H was protective once he got his head out of his ass. I liked that outside forces from the MCs for the most part caused the climactic parts of the book.
I didn't care for the orgy talk in the beginning because I kept going ok so was the H in the orgy why?!?!?! (trust me I know this is me thing lol) since it was before the h even met him I let it go. I do not like the covers of the books.
Overall the romance was ok but what impressed me was the overarching storyline and the world the author is building. I see great things coming from this author's imagination and absolutely think with some more writing under her belt she will be a force in the fantasy/romance world. I hope to and cannot wait to read more of her work.
Off to share this series on my book groups I hope they enjoy it as much as I did.
I have been waiting on this book since I finished the first one a few days after it came out. I jumped this one to the top of my TBR list! This is a great series and I hope it finds a lot of readers.
I love Jane and Gray. This story was fast paced, had a lot of action and twists that I anticipated some of from book 1 and others you couldn't see coming. Once again, I didn't want to put the book down.
While I really enjoyed this book, this book felt even more YA then the first book which made the characters feel less mature in this book when I feel like it needed to be the opposite. So when the saddest events occur, it felt out of balance and very heavy compared with the rest of the book that seemed to skip adult situations that 18 year old mates would be dealing with.
While I liked the new characters and the plot as it went, (one of the best relationships seemed to be Rage and Ice - I enjoyed their scenes together and wanted more of them) I felt like it didn't do justice to lingering questions from book one. But more importantly, I didn't feel like either Jane or Gray really grew in this book. Jane is still really needy and Gray is still myopic in how he sees Jane as not his equal partner. He gets a little insight toward the end of the book but I don't feel like it was enough of a paradigm shift to put them on even ground.
All in all, this was worth the wait and I'm glad I got to know Jane and Gray. Looking forward to the books for Liz and Rhyken and Blue and Rose.
This is a fast-paced story, steamy and action-packed with likable characters in Gray and Jane. The story line is intriguing and pulls the reader right in with great world building and suspense. Coupled with the unexpected twists and turns, you will enjoy every moment of this shifter adventure as Jane, hoping for an uneventful year, meets up with werewolves, witches, mages, and supernaturals she never even imagined. Those wanting to be friends are fine… but some of the others want her killed! Can Gray protect his mate without having to show her what he really is? He sort of would prefer to keep that part hidden for a little while.
This is a new author for me and a very pleasant surprise. The second book is better than the first one, which was a bit too dark for my taste. It has interesting story, humor and practically no fillers. Looking forward to the next book.
