Dragon Born 1: The Shifter's Hoard

Rate this book
After fighting a troll in a back alley, I found out the supernatural was real.

Then I discovered I'm a dragon shifter.

Soon after, I learned I'm also a mage.

Turns out this combination is incredibly rare, and now everyone wants a piece of me.

Being a dragon, there's only one thing I want to do: gather my hoard.

Power. Magic. Women. Riches. It's all going to be mine.

Oh boy.

So... it's not bad... per se.
There aren't many grammar mistakes, though one or two is the only reason I have it 3 stars though, cause it's not good either.
Wish fulfillment at its finest, The critique that I've seen from others that stands out the most as true is the feeling of a complete lack of stakes.
When I've other reviewer wrote that the main character wasn't overpowered I thought, "Did we read the same book?"
There was zero point where I thought the MC was going to have a bad day. There were several where there was a glimmer of a feeling, but by the very next paragraph it was like, "Nope, he magically was too cool for everyone."
Like he was supposed to be this average guy, but arisen he knows how to fight better than people who probably had been training for years I'd imagine.
Oh and also I total sociopath. Zero remorse for killing someone it feels like, zero trauma.
It gets heavier into D/s style relationship dynamics, but the D ends up standing for douchebag. Confidence is sexy, arrogance is not, and he ends up feeling more like an entitled dudebro the further along the story progresses. Especially the "claiming other people's women."
Yes the wish fulfillment real dolls are no more than chattel, to further fetishes.
Which, the smut is okay? Is actually tame for my standards, just heavily centered on breeding more than anything. If that's your thing, and you don't mind the complete lack of effort making things seem pointless give it a read.
The book just ends... though I think it was supposed to be this climactic thing that happens, but as there's not really any low point to punch in up it's just flat.
I'm honestly upset with myself, in hindsight I've read the author before and while not as bad it had similar issues, I need to start keeping a list on who doesn't mesh with what I enjoy in a story.

This is an adolescent power fantasy. A young 20-somemthing man suddenly becomes a dragon-shifter and a mage and the matter of days gains half a dozen women of various magical backgrounds suddenly fawning over him and throwing themselves at him.

This just isn't very well done:

There are a few sex scenes that go on and on for literally dozens of pages. I'm no prude, but if I want to read smut I can find lots of it online.

The main character doesn't have to work for anything. Every time he needs something or will need something, it suddenly gains access to it in the previous chapter.

Oof. This was a tough one. For starters I got this book as a gag gift for the holidays. The cover and description of the book were hysterical, so I knew to lower my expectations on the epic fantasy scale and raise it on the cringy, power-fantasy-kinda-monster-smut-book thing (idk if that’s a genre but it is now…)

The idea that this twenty something year old dude became one of the most powerful beings on the planet after some “hot catgirl” killed a troll isn’t the worst part of the book.

The actual story could have had promise if it didn’t feel so rushed. The MMC never had to struggle for anything. There were no moments of getting his butt kicked and then coming back ten times stronger. The guy was just OP at everything, from “shifting” to magic to f*@$king different animal girls…

Speaking of, the smut in the book was rough, and not in a kinky way. The MC had women pulling their hair out for a chance to jump him (I get that it’s part of the fantasy). What could have been different was the build up. King set out early that shifters are SUPER horny so within the context of the book’s universe I’ll roll with it. So you have these two crazy turned on girls, the MC says one or two fairly flirtatious lines and now they’re all doing it….whatever happened to a little wine and dine? A little slow burn? Delayed gratification? The MC could have totally had the threesome at the end but maybe make hints to it, make a build up, hell how about some foreplay!

Anyway I won’t be continuing the series but Mr. Dante King, I wish you luck on your writer’s journey.

Amazing!!

If you love Dragons and Love Harems. Then this book is the perfect fit for you. Dante has done an amazing job of putting the two together. The only negative thing I have to say about this book is that I have to wait for book 2.

Oh boy, this is one of those stories that have everything you want and still don't work at all. The storytelling here is lacking, the details are absent and the characters aren't likable at all. I think the author should seriously think well the background of this work (with details included) and build from there, give his initial idea some depth.

an acquired taste

This was my first time reading a book by King, it started off t really slow, then kind of muddled around a bit with a guy that just refused to accept things that went bump in the night… fast forward he devolves into this insanely cocky chad. Now, I like harems…love them, but the way they talk in this book is off-putting and this is why I dinged it a star.. you have one mate calling him “young man” constantly but she’s supposed to be a love interest, another hyper sexualised raiju shifter that I actually like a lot… but she just has a profane mouth on her 🤣. I mean I like a lil dirty talk but the things he was saying to her was really kinda disturbing…. Next we have Riley, the 18 year old that calls him “daddy” that wants to be one of his wh**es 😩🤔. I mean brougham come on, then we have three bear shifters that only see themselves as property… the thing is I found the story entertaining and I want to read more… it’s just now we have this super chad and the over the top romance scenes… 🤷🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️. I’ll give it a go and read the next book. But I’m hoping King doesn’t keep this up.

Pretty mid. I'm passing on the rest. Kind of got a gross patriarchy thing going on

***
At this point, I think if you're going to write contemporary fantasy of any kind, your character(s) that discover they're magical can't not know what a "shifter" is. It's so ubiquitous in pop culture media these days. At worst it should be a line like "It said I was a shifter. Is that like, a shapeshifter, as in werewolf?" and not "I know a mage is a magician but I've never possibly heard the term 'shifter' in regards to a person ever ever despite living on modern Earth."

The "hot older woman that knows exactly what a man wants" giving some gawk gawk 3000 because "my hero" is so like *tips fedora* "m'lady" coded that I shuddered.

The line "I'd heard that older women were less jealous than girls my own age" exists in this book in context with the MC eyefucking a different woman than the one that gave him the ole gluk gluk.

However, "jingle the keys" is becoming one of my favorites in a long line of euphemisms.

There's a lot of sentences from the MC narration that give big "virgin m'lady" energy.

The MC narration has described one character as giving him a "maternal" blowjob and I physically recoiled and made the "blech" face.

A interesting fun urban fantasy

This is an interesting urban fantasy that has some interesting ideas behind it. It also has old ideas but presented in a new way if that makes sense. I like the way things are written in the story I like the way the people react and interact with each other I also like the sexy times in the story as they are a part of urban fantasies. For me it will be interesting to see what happens to our main character and his new clan. This is a fun and entertaining read full of a good time.

How i missed this one i dont know

This book is another excellent addition to the writings of Dante King and man oh man, am I shamed that I didn't get in board until.book 3 had been released. Just a warning it is explicit like his other books, it does not follow along the same paths as aether mage and creation mage. It has cougar and daddy references but is damn fun and addictive. Now im onto book 2 followed quickly by book 3

The series is pretty good if a bit formulaic. The sex scenes are very graphic but very well done. The fighting scenes are a little weak but okay. Unusually, the fighting scenes actually get worse as the series progresses. The formula of...bad guy seems invulnerable...MC gets his butt kicked and is saved by someone started repeating and got boring. I started skipping to the end of any fight since they were all the same.

This would have been a lot better if the author took a glance at it after writing this rough draft before pushing it out.
Seriously.. The continuation errors are.. jarring.
Anyways.. I Did not finish this. Reached 90% done before i had enough.

I do not normally give such negative reviews. Most of the time i give a one star, i do so and don't leave a review. But in this case i felt that the author needed a bit of feedback.

Dragon Born 1

Another great book on the order of Dragon Breeder. They are indeed extremely different books with vastly different storylines . But this book further establishes Dante King as an outstanding writer and author. I'm really enjoying these books and can't wait for the next one. Keep the good books coming.

Strong series start

Powerful main character with dual powers. Solid support characters that build up MC. Time of turmoil with underlying current of old world evil, MC bringing a possible new hope.

Wow! Just Wow!

I've read quite a few of the Dante King's books but this one took it to another level. While the concept might be similar to other series, the execution was outstanding. Looking forward to a sequel asap.

I really got into this story.

This turned out to be a really good story. The main character seemed really well thought out and seemed more genuine than other Harem books I've read.

Still loses a star for bring a Harem book but it was fun to read

great story

I really can’t wait to see what happens with the board the only problem is it’s a little X-rated for my reading so I have to skip the X-rated parts of the book but otherwise it’s a really great store

Eye Opening!

As an avid reader, I read most everything.
Fantasy shifters have been on the bottom of my list to peruse, however, I started this book, and was hooked on the first chapter.
This book has it all, fantastic characters, action, and intrigue.

3.5 rounded up.

I think there was too much sexy time versus plot. We had something setup 2/3 in that I thought was going to be the resolution of book one that turns out to be the plot for book two.
