This mystery story takes place within the world of an online game, with the characters simultaneously their in-word personas and aware of the larger world, for an effect that's unique and entertaining. The only thing even vaguely like this that I've read is The Unfortunate Decisions of Dahlia Moss--which also featured a mystery and an online world (and was a lot of fun)--but I have to say that Krim Times has a more original approach to telling the story.

I think I benefitted from having family member who's super into online games and lingo, so the terminology (things like "griefer") was familiar to me--readers might be lost if they don't have a least some familiarity with the gaming world, although there's a lot of humor that carries through regardless.

This is my first litRPG read and I loved it! I was reluctant to try this genre because I'm a big fan of MMO RPGs but I had no idea if these could translate well into a novel.
I'm happy to say I was wrong, and Krim Times is terrific.
It's a short story that works perfectly on its own, with great characters, witty dialogue, and a sense of humor that had me laughing way too often for a seventy-page novella. For those of us who play similar games, the nostalgia hits hard and adds a layer of hilarity.
I already got my hands on Book II and III, so I look forward to returning to Krim.

Set in a suspect virtual medieval world, we follow the gluttonous head of security, who has very little to do, given that torture, murder and ferocious battles are all part of the package. But when an assassin starts disposing of the residents, the bottom line gets threatened.

Sporting a off kilter sense of satire that, in places, gave me Monty Python vibes, the world of Krim is a swift mash up of medieval stink and digital nonsense gaming that just seems to work.

I love these short fantasy novellas that we can read in a break to escape the overwhelming day. It's filled with humor, Terry Pratchett style, in a virtual world of a game where noobs are easily pinpointed for using freebie avatars. This is a murder-solving episode, and it's fun to read, I did get lost sometimes, but I had enough fun to continue reading the next one.

pseudo reality in gaming

Imagine being a dumb cop in a pulp western game trying to solve murders without any sense or ideas. Welcome to Krim. A little funny, room to improve. Like, where’s the pretty dancing girl npc that encourages the cop?
