Lemon Yellow Lies is book one in Emily Oberton's Hadley Home Design Cozy Mysteries series. When Hadley Sutton broke up with her famous boyfriend in New Orleans, she applied for a job in Darlington Hills, Virginia. However, on arrival in Darlington Hills, her new client's fiancee went missing, and Hadley became involved in investigating her disappearance. The readers of Lemon Yellow Lies will continue to follow Hadley Sutton to discover what happens.

Lemon Yellow Lies is an enjoyable, cozy mystery you want to read quickly before sleep. I had not read any other books by Emily Oberton before reading this book, and it is enjoyable. I enjoyed the way Emily Oberton portrayed her characters and their interaction with each other. Lemon Yellow Lies is well-written and researched. I like Emily Oberton's description of the settings of Lemon Yellow Lies, which complemented the book's plot.

Readers of Lemon Yellow Lies will not only be entertained by the mystery but also gain insights into the diverse roles of interior designers and the unique dynamics of living in small communities in Virginia, USA.

I recommend this book.

This is a story of an interior designer, Hadley Sutton, who travels to a small southern Virginian town. She is leaving New Orleans to avoid seeing the man who broke up with her. The plus is her Aunt lives in this small town. She has a big job interview there, but in the meantime she takes on an interior design job. In the meantime, her client's fiancée goes missing. And Hadley feels it is her fault. Now the mystery goes in discovering where, when and who is responsible for this missing person.

Hadley has discovered this café where the owner makes yummy tasty desserts. And from this place they have access to a cat rescue. But the desserts are the bomb, you will find one of the recipes in the back of the book.

Cozy mysteries are books that keep you guessing on what is going to happen next.

A small backyard refresh for a new client turns into more than Hadley Sutton bargained for. A birthday surprise for the client's fiancée becomes a nightmare when the lady in question arrives home early and hates the redesign. When the woman vanishes, Hadley feels the argument they had was a catalyst for the disappearance and that she needs to make amends.

Hadley Sutton was a delight. Her career choice of interior design makes for an interesting backdrop - oh, the murders we will see! I do wish the story had been longer, though. Just as I was really getting into it, it wrapped up. I'm looking forward to more in this series.

Interesting book. Not my typical genre. It seemed very strange to me, which might be because I never read books like this, but it all seemed unrealistic. How was nobody questioning things or more observant. Overall, semi predictable just didn’t expect the kangaroos to actually play into it. It was a lot of build up for the plot to be so small and quickly over. I will say it did take me months to finish this. Just didn’t completely make sense why she’d go there just because of an ex, then accept a random job and it all to be like yeah let me keep working even after a murder happened. Strange.

Acquired Kindle edition when offered free on Amazon.

Not terrible, but not very good either. Too many "Are you kidding me?" moments.

More complete review to be added here.

EDITED TO ADD:
As I wrote when first posted, this wasn't a particularly bad book; it just wasn't very good, for a lot of reasons.

MC Hadley Sutton, an interior designer, is trying to land a job in Darlington Hills, after abandoning New Orleans following a break-up. While in Darlington Hills, she immediately lands a one-time assignment for a total stranger, some rich guy who wants her to design his pool-side space as a surprise for his fiancée. Oh, and Hadley is also supposed to house- and dog-sit for this guy while he's at a business conference or something.

Now, seriously, who engages a decorator on the spot w/o references? And lets them house-sit? And take care of the dog? So I'm rolling my eyes right away at this.

Hadley then invites her brand-new "best friend" Erin to join her at the rich guy's house for a swim. And then there's a confrontation involving Erin and some other complications, followed by a death that's ruled a homicide. Of course, Hadley has to butt her nose in and start trying to figure out who the killer is.

By the end of the book, the mystery is solved, but there were all these "Why?" questions lingering in my mind, and that's why I ended up with a rating of 1.5 stars, rounded reluctantly to 2.0 because I reserve 1.0 for the truly bad books.

Why did the rich guy engage Hadley? We know why she took the job, but why did he offer it?

Why did she agree to house- and dog-sit for a total stranger? Why did she invite Erin to join her? Why did she think she needed to "help" the police with their investigation?

When the answer to this kind of question is "Because the author needed X to happen to further the story," many stars are lost. I don't care what the author wanted or needed; I want to be able to believe the character did whatever they did because they had no other viable option.

Minor spoiler:

Being an interior designer didn't seem like a profession that led organically to private investigating. Even running a bakery, where the proprietor would have lots of contact with lots of people, makes more sense. I also didn't quite accept that if Hadley did get the job she applied for, she would also be allowed to keep her side business, which might come into direct competition with her employer.

There were just too many elements of this book that fell flat. If the writing had been stellar, if the characters had been interesting, if the locale had been dynamic, it might have worked; but none of those aspects clicked for me.

"Lemon Yellow Lies," the first book in the Hadley Home Design Cozy Mysteries series by Emily Oberton, captivated me right from the start. The inviting town of Darlington Hills in Virginia is vividly portrayed, and Emily Oberton adds an extra layer of charm by weaving in a short yet mysterious local legend. This combination sets a delightful stage not only for this novel but also for the subsequent books in the series. The way Emily Oberton describes the various settings, from the cozy home used for interior design photos to the bustling town square and the quaint hotel, transported me right into the heart of Hadley’s world as she embarked on her sleuthing adventure.
Hadley Sutton, the main character, is a wonderfully clever and inquisitive interior designer. I found her incredibly relatable, as she takes on the responsibility of solving the mystery after feeling partly accountable for the victim's fate due to her own lack of honesty. Hadley’s determination to uncover the truth made me root for her throughout the story. The cast of characters surrounding Hadley is equally engaging. From the condescending and rude witch she has to deal with (who isn’t literally a witch, but close enough), to the various other characters, each having their own distinct quirks and personalities that kept me guessing about their motives and roles in the unfolding drama.
There are numerous suspects, and at different points, it seems like anyone could be the culprit. The twists and turns are masterfully crafted, keeping me on the edge of my seat and constantly guessing what might happen next. It was especially enjoyable to delve into Hadley’s thoughts as she tried to piece together clues and pondered the possibilities of each new revelation. The pace of the story is brisk from the get-go, and it only accelerates as the plot thickens. It’s rare to find a book that demands I stay up late to finish it in one sitting, but "Lemon Yellow Lies" was definitely one of those compelling reads.
Having only read this first book in the series, I’m already eager to dive into the next installment, "Pearl White Peril." Emily Oberton has included a tempting recipe at the end of the book, which sounds like a delicious treat worth trying. I’m excited to see where Hadley’s adventures take her next and to experience more of Emily Oberton’s charming storytelling.

Lemon Yellow Lies is the first book in the ‘Hadley Home Design Cozy Mysteries’ series. It stars Hadley Sutton, an interior decorator, and is told in first person from her pov.

3.5

I’ve wanted to start reading Cozy Mysteries for a while, and settled on this book to see if I would enjoy the genre. Bear with me as I explain how and why, I settled on this book. I searched AZ for Cozys and read excerpts of some of the stories. It was evident there was a pattern to most of them. Tremendous inner monologue overflowing with descriptors and described in a tone that made it appear as if the protagonist, a woman in the ones I read, were not that intelligent. And the stories relied heavily on a romantic male lead. More than not, the writing had a sing-song type of quality that reminded me of children’s books. I rolled my eyes countless times wondering if I’d find any Cozy Mysteries I’d like, that maybe I really wanted crime novels or ‘whodunits.’ After reading this book, I think Cozy Mysteries have their place in the ‘fluffy read’ genre. Something I’d read after an angsty or action story. Okay, now all that explaining is out of the way, here’s my review.

The reason I chose this story from reading the sample, is because it wasn’t overflowing with inner monologue and descriptions. There was a satisfactory balance with the dialogue. There isn’t much action until the climax when Hadley realizes who the murderer is and she must escape. That for me, was the best part of the book. Other than that, the plot was a slow feeding of clues and possible suspects, which the author did a good job with, enough to keep me interested in the story. I liked the little dog Chip that Hadley was dog sitting.

As to Hadley, she wasn’t a hysterical female, thank goodness. However, she was nosy, and couldn’t keep a secret even when she was explicitly asked not to tell. It’s not like she told the police, she told her Aunt. I’d call Hadley a blabbermouth and if she was a friend, I wouldn’t trust her with secret information because she’d talk herself into telling others whatever they wanted to know. I consider her a bit frivolous, too. I prefer reading about strong women and maybe that’s not someone I’d find in a Cozy Mystery; I’d have to look in the Paranormal or Detective genre.

Overall, Lemon Yellow Lies kept me reading. It’s slow paced except for the conflict at the end. Hadley is nosy and I wouldn’t trust her anywhere near a secret. The writing was a nice balance of dialogue, monologue, and description. None of those overrode any of the others. I want to give this 3.5 stars, but since I can’t give half stars, I’ll round it up to 4 Stars.

This is the first book I have read by this author. I really liked this book and the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because I found the ending too predictable.

Interior designer Hadley Sutten has a bad breakup with her boyfriend who is locally famous so she sees him everywhere. She needs a break and needs to be somewhere familiar. Her favorite aunt's hometown of Darlington, VA is the perfect place to escape to after a breakup. She lands a job interview in Darlington so she packs her bags and leaves her home in New Orleans. Hadley has plans to start her own design business but, in the meantime, she needs a job. While waiting for her job interview, she meets Kent, who hires her to furnish his outdoor living space for his fiance's surprise birthday party. Along with working on his backyard, she has also agreed to house-sit and take care of his dog while he is away on a business trip. Who would hire an interior designer that they just met to house-sit? I guess that is why they call it fiction.

When Hadley meets his fiance, it doesn't go well. The fiance is a bit stuck up and doesn't seem to like anything Hadley is doing to the backyard. The plot thickens when the fiance goes missing. There are a lot of lies and secrets as it leads us to the truth.

The cast of suspects is growing & Hadley's life could be in danger as she uncovers some secrets that get her closer to the truth.

I love all the twists and turns in this book and it was so engaging, I couldn't put it down. I loved Hadley even though she was a bit naïve and trusting. I was going to give this book 5 stars until the ending. I like a mystery that is hard to solve and leaves you surprised at the end. In this entire book, I knew who the most obvious suspect was, but I was hoping for more of a big twist at the end and it didn't happen.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.
Hadley Sutton goes to Darlington Hill where she has family for a job interview after breaking up with her famous boyfriend. Her interview is delayed so she manages to get a last minute Interior Designer job and is asked to live in on the job while the owner is away. The owner's girlfriend is found murdered and has been cheating on her boyfriend, her ex husband climbs into the house where Hadley is staying and threatens her if she says anything.
Hadley is interviewed by the Police and is instantly attracted to one of the Policeman and passes information to him that she has found out while nosing around. She is found out and is thrown into the pool and held down while she fights for her life. Will she be able to escape? Will she dies as well due to her nosiness?

This cozy mystery has a twist in the tale and is well worth reading however I think it would have been better if she had not been feeding the police information. All the sleuthing books do that and have a friend or friendly detective in the force. Maybe the Police could actually solve a murder for once on their own and run parallel with the sleuth's findings

Yellow is my favorite color so the first thing that drew me to Emily Oberton's book was the title--Lemon Yellow Lies. I enjoyed this cozy mystery from beginning to end. Interior Designer Haley Sutton is in Darlington Hills, Virginia working on a project for her client, Kent Reading. He is planning to host a surprise party for his fiance, Marion Koh, and wants outdoor seating for at least twenty people via a tropical oasis. While working on the job, Haley is also dog sitting, Chip, Kent's Bichon while he is away on business. Haley has interviewed for a job at Walnut Ridge Furniture, a popular online furnishing company. If she is hired, she plans to move to Darlington Hills near where her aunt lives. But things get complicated when Marion is found dead! There is an ample amount of suspects and Haley goes into sleuth mode. This book introduces several interesting characters and it will be fun following their lives in future books in this series. I look forward to future installments!

I really don't know how to accurately review this book. I gave it four stars because it was a good story and kept me engrossed the entire time. The reason I could not give it a five star rating is two-fold: First, I guessed the murderer right away albeit for the wrong reasons as I thought it was a serial killer scenario and it was not. So I guess the mystery itself was a little too simple for me. I actually like it when I'm shocked to find out the culprit, especially when it's a good plot and reason for the murder. Some are often far-fetched, like, "Really, you'd kill someone for that?" Lol. I really liked the characters though, especially the main character Hadley and her back story. The second reason I did not give it a five star rating is because I didn't see the need for the character Celine. Unless she is going to end up in future books, I thought she was totally unnecessary to the plot. But in general, I like this series. They give you a preview of the next book Pearl White Peril at the end in the Kindle edition and I have to say, it too seems interesting.

Hadley Sutton is wanting to move away from New Orleans (and away from her no-longer boyfriend) to Darlington Hills, VA where her aunt and friends live. As an interior decorator, she has an interview with a man there and is hoping to land the job. She meets Kent in her friend’s cafe and he hires her to design and redo his patio area to accommodate 20 guests for a surprise party he is planning for his fiancé. As he is headed out of town on business, he asks her to house sit and care for his dog Chip, who doesn’t do well in kennels. Things get complicated when his fiancé stops by unexpectedly, isn’t happy to find another women staying there, and then disappears! A clean and interesting story with well-developed characters and a twisty ending I didn’t see coming! I received a free ARC of this book from the author and write this review voluntarily.

Needed a cozy mystery with a “color” in its title for one of my book challenges and came across this one. Cute, quick read with some good twists. Hadley Sutton is in Darlington Hills, Virginia, to interview for a job after the breakup with her boyfriend in New Orleans. She happens upon an interior design job as she waits her interview. The job is supposed to be a surprise for the client’s fiancé. She arrives unexpectedly while Hadley is enjoying her client’s pool since she’s also house sitting to care for the client’s dog. From that point on all havoc breaks loose as the fiancé, Marion, is found murdered. This book is the first in a new cozy mystery series. Based on this book, the next ones should be good as well.

Really liked the mixture of a mystery with an unsuspecting interior designer. Hadley wants to leave New Orleans and live in the small town of Darlington Hills where her aunt lives. She has a job interview but takes on a client to turn his backyard into an outdoor living area. She is house sitting and dog sitting while he is away on business. His fiance's birthday is coming up and Kent wants to surprise her with an awesome new look to the backyard and pool. But Marcie, his fiance, goes missing. Great story telling as the information about Marcie's disappearance slowly unfolds keeping the reader wanting to keep reading to find out how the mystery is solved. Enjoyed this book and the surprises reavealed at the end.

Very enjoyable read

I loved this very well written book. It has a great story line and is filled with great characters who are well introduced and developed in the story. It's one that draws you in immediately and keeps you turning the pages until you have finished it.
Hadley certainly got a lot more than she bargained for when she went to visit her Aunt and takes a rush decorating job while there. One of the big reasons why she is there is to get away from her ex boyfriend never expecting the chaos that follows. There's plenty of plot twists, action, murder, mystery, drama and much more going on in this delightful story.

I enjoyed this author's writing style and I wasn't 1/2 way through this story and I purchased the 2nd one in the series PEARL WHITE PERIL.

This story isn't about love and romance, but murder and suspense. I enjoyed how the author weaved her story that I had so many murderers it was funny. You get intrigue, twists, great main and secondary character's and you are not sure who the murderer is until the end so don't cheat and read ahead.

No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA for our h and clean. This story ends about the 90% mark on my e-reader - rest is blurb for the next story. (ljb)

Hadley traveled to another smaller town to do a home designing job for Kent. He asks her if she wanted to stay the night there as he was going out of town. She said okay she can get a good start on the job then . So next day she decided to take a swim in his pool before she starts her job of redoing Kents back pool area. Next day Kent's girlfriend comes in and throws a fit about who are you and why are you here. So she leaves and is never seen again. Harley starts to do some investigating on her own. But the police said NO WAY lady. But she didnt listen until someone tried to kill her.

Enjoyable

As a book-a-day reader for over 70 of my 80 years, I can usually guess the "bad guy/gal" fairly early on. I did not in this case. Nor did I expect the tracking devices being used. That was a nice change. I do get tired of formulaic books where all the women are gorgeous, the men are muscular hunky billionaires, and the clothing is not simply a jacket, shoes or dress, but described only by its brand name. Everyone lives on coffee or booze and pastries. This book had much less of that. I will be reading more of her books.

Quick read. This books sets the stage for our intrepid main character, an interior designer, to come to this little town, have connections, a pet, and a possible love interest.

The murder and red herrings aren't filled out as well as I'd like -- what the fiancee and her roommate argued about, for example, isn't clear. Why the murder took place when it did left me with some questions. The ex-husband's relationship with the murdered woman and details involving him ... Anyway.

I'd be fine reading the next one, or not. I read this one because it was available on Kindle Unlimited.

yellow? kangaroos?

Kent was too unbelievable from the start. He let a stranger have complete access to his home. And paid her to decorate his backyard while sleeping in his house while he was out of town? Unbelievable. But I did like Chip. But didn’t understand why Hadley would feel obligated to solve the murder of a woman she’d just met and didn’t like. Strange murder mystery, but like many other women sleuth cosies, for some unknown reason, they can’t keep their noses out of police business.

Suspects Keep Coming

Hadley wants to leave her ex goodbye in New Orleans and move to Virginia with her aunt. So she flies in for an interview that gets postponed and takes a temp job house/dog sitting while she decorates the backyard for a client. He is hosting a birthday party for his fiancé and his neurotic dog can’t be boarded while he is out of town for the week. Win-win right? Not in any mystery I’ve read. The fiancé comes home early and disappears and the suspects are everywhere Hadley turns.
An introductory price, made this a great steal! 👍

Designing is my passion

Well developed and defined main character, others not equally well defined.
Haddley's behaviour is at times very chaotic and made me skip paragraphs and pages that described the behaviour that was definitely not reasonable. The identity of the guilty person was a bit unexpected and the clues did not quite add up.
The writing was good so the book was easy to read despite the skipping of pages. Somethings were left unexplained, why was Chip upset on seeing Marian but not upset on seeing Philip?

A good clean cozy mystery

A young woman wants to move to a small town. She gets a small decorating job, which is supposed to be a surprise for the homeowners fiancee. Unfortunately, the fiance is murdered before she can see the surprise. Our young decorator becomes a sleuth, and tries to figure out who murdered this young woman in the prime of her life. The town and characters are interesting and there is some humor in the story. I will definitely read the next book in the series.

A short, easy read. Well written and the characters are likeable, including the animal characters. Whisks and Whiskers sounds like a nice place to hang out for a snack and to pet some cats. The mystery was pretty straightforward, no major twists or surprising reveals but some unique clues. I was surprised there weren't other job options for Hadley as Vincent seemed like a jerk, even more so in the except for book 2. Maybe the author has a plan for him going forward. I'm interested in reading more of the series, and trying the cheesecake recipe at the end of this book.

Have never read a book from Emily before.

But so glad I did! The title of the book, is a bit confusing. I expected something light and something about houses (yellow). This book is nothing like that. It's pretty much a mystery. It was an easy read, with a mystery I tried to figure out. I didn't figure it out, until the last. Had few ideas. I'm really glad I took a chance, and read it!

This is the first in the series. The main character is Hadley. Hadley is an home decorator and she takes on the job of redoing Kent's patio for his girlfriend's birthday party. Before she is done, the girlfriend is murdered and since Hadley was housesitting for Kent as well as redoing the patio, the cops had a lot of questions. Hadley keeps asking questions and she is beginning to figure this out, but will it be to late for her ?

Hadley's homecoming

Hadley is trying to escape New Orleans due to a breakup with her boyfriend and comes to Darlington Hills to get away and takes a decorating job while she is staying in town. Her client wants to redo his pool area for his fiancee so he can have a surprise party for her. His fiancee is murdered and the hunt is on for the killer. Hadley is questioning people about the murder and she is now the killers next target. This was a great suspenseful story.

I loved this story!

It was a nice one-day read. Relatively light-hearted, but enough of a mystery to keep me entertained. The characters were well thought out, and the red herrings did their due justice.

I love that the story wasn't overly burdened with side-plots, but rather succinct. I absolutely loved the kangaroo twist! Made it fun!

I checked this out of the library, and ended up purchasing the entire series in paperback form!

Quick and to the point, it’s a quick but satisfying read. Not too cutesy for a cozy, thankfully. I really enjoyed it and the snippet of the next in the series has me interested. A fun, quick, entertaining read.

I received a free copy from voracious readers with no strings attached. All opinions are my own.
