God I LOVED this. An incorrigible, complicated girl solving a mystery with her two new friends.
Lily moves to the quiet boring town of Edge, only to discover The Museum of Emily, a building full of tchotchkes and tokens. But who is Emily, and who made this museum? And now that she’s started investigating it, why is some strange man following Lily? Can she and her new friends solve the mystery of Emily?
This book is absolutely stocked with food — I ate at least one PB sandwich while reading and now desperately want some seaside chips.
It reminds me of all the things I loved about Luna Rae is Not Alone by Hayley Webster and The Secret Detectives by Ella Risbridger: plucky kids solving mysteries and books that don’t shy away from the harder sides of life.
Lots of gorgeous queer rep, a great mystery, brilliant dialogue, a story that absolutely rips along. It’s no wonder that Looking For Emily has landed right on the favourites shelf.

BRILLIANT. I’ve been a fan of Fiona’s writing for years so I was already very excited for this book. It didn’t disappoint!
It’s very fast-paced, very witty, and has a solid thread of friendship holding it all together. The mystery plot is exciting and never loses pace, and I actually found myself holding my breath at the tension at some points. I honestly couldn’t put it down and raced through it in an afternoon.
A charming middle grade story that I think is also funny and interesting enough for young adults and grown ups. HUGE thumbs up.
Plus: bonus points for chips and golden retrievers.

Extremely pacey middle grade adventure/mystery story. Lily & mum have moved to Edge, a seemingly sleepy village by the sea. One day, Lily gets slightly disoriented on her way home & comes across a little green door that lies in an impossibly small space between two houses - she feels there is something behind that door waiting just for her. It turns out it’s The Museum of Emily. It’s filled with every day objects, books, buttons, that have been carefully mounted & placed in the style of a museum- the museum of Emily. Nothing has been moved in there for a very long time. Can Lily solve the puzzle of this interesting but bizarre place?
Lily finds it almost impossible to make friends but Sam makes it a little easier for her & introduces herself. The two girls are neighbours & Sam introduces Lily to her friend Jay. The three become a close team who need to find a way to work together to solve the mystery of the museum.

Bei einem Blick in die neue Vorschau des Knesebeck Verlags ist mir der Kinderroman „Auf der Suche nach Emily McCrae“ direkt ins Auge gesprungen. Cover und Klappentext ließen mein Herz augenblicklich höherschlagen, sodass schnell klar war, dass ich das Buch lesen möchte.
Die 12-jährige Lily Hargan ist gerade erst mit ihrer Mutter in das verschlafene Küstenstädtchen Edge gezogen und überhaupt nicht glücklich darüber. Sie vermisst die Großstadt, wo es laut und trubelig ist und ständig etwas Aufregendes passiert. In Edge ist einfach nichts los, es ist öde und langweilig, die Stadt ist winzig klein und alle kennen einander. Doch dann entdeckt Lily auf einem ihrer Streifzüge ein geheimnisvolles Haus, von dem sie sich wie magisch angezogen fühlt. Es entpuppt sich als ein Museum, das einer Emily McCrae gewidmet ist. Lilys Neugier ist geweckt. Sie beginnt nachzuforschen und findet schnell heraus, dass Emily vor vielen Jahren spurlos verschwunden ist. Was ist nur geschehen? Wer war diese Emily, warum verschwand sie damals so plötzlich? Und wer ist für das versteckte Museum verantwortlich? Lily möchte das Rätsel um Emily unbedingt lösen. Zum Glück ist sie nicht länger auf sich alleine gestellt. In Sam und Jay findet sie gute neue Freunde, die wie sie mehr wissen wollen. Ein sehr stimmungsvolles Cover hat die Verena Körting da gezaubert. Es wirkt düster und geheimnisvoll und macht wie der Titel neugierig auf die Geschichte dahinter. Beides ist auf jeden Fall passend zum Inhalt gewählt und gibt einen guten Eindruck darauf, was einen im Buch erwartet. Ich war von der äußeren Gestaltung sofort ganz angetan und sie hat mir auch nicht zu viel versprochen: Mich hat die schottische Autorin Fiona Longmuir mit ihrem Kinderbuchdebüt auf ganzer Linie überzeugen können. „Auf der Suche nach Emily McCrae“ ist eine abwechslungsreiche und fesselnde Detektivgeschichte über ein rätselhaftes Verschwinden, eine abenteuerliche Spurensuche und Freundschaft. Ein atmosphärischer und nostalgisch anmutender Kinderkrimi, der nicht nur junge Leser*innen zu fesseln und begeistern vermag, sondern auch Erwachsene.
Als Leser*in wird man gleich zu Beginn in das beschauliche schottische Küstenstädtchen Edge mitgenommen, dem neuen Heimatort unserer 12-jährigen Hauptprotagonistin Lily. Mit Edge hat die Autorin den idealen Schauplatz für ein klassisches Mystery-Abenteuer erschaffen. Es gibt einen alten Leuchtturm, ein mysteriöses Haus, dunkle Höhlen...Die bildlichen Beschreibungen lassen alles im Kopf lebendig werden und schaffen eine tolle Atmosphäre, sodass man spielend leicht in das Geschehen eintauchen kann und sich direkt wohlfühlt. Ich habe mich sofort in das Setting verliebt (trotz Lilys anfänglicher schlechten Meinung über den Ort).
Auch die Charaktere sind wunderbar getroffen. Lily, Sam und Jay sind drei aufgeweckte, mutige und sympathische Kinder, die man als Leser*in schnell ins Herz schließt und mit denen sich die Zielgruppe sehr gut identifizieren kann.
Die vielen unterschiedlichen Nebenfiguren sind ebenfalls liebevoll gezeichnet und können nicht nur mit Authentizität glänzen, sondern auch mit Diversität. Die nette Bibliothekarin Ms Bright, Sams zwei Väter, Hund Costello - man muss sie einfach alle mögen.
Erzählt wird der Roman in dritter Person und aus zwei Perspektiven. Die eigentliche Geschichte ist in Lilys Sicht geschrieben, es gibt in der ersten Hälfte des Buches aber auch einige Kapitel, die uns in die Vergangenheit mitnehmen und verraten, wieso Emily damals verschwunden ist. Obwohl man dadurch mehr weiß als als unsere drei Protagonisten, fiebert und rätselt man dennoch mit ihnen mit und wird von den Wendungen immer wieder überrascht. Die beiden Erzählstränge wurden sehr geschickt aufeinander abgestimmt, sodass die Haupthandlung zu keiner Zeit langweilig wird und auch für Erwachsene durchweg interessant bleibt. Es macht einfach nur jede Menge Spaß, gemeinsam mit Lily, Sam und Jay die vielen Puzzleteile zu einem großen Ganzen zusammenzufügen und gleichzeitig mitzuverfolgen, wie sie im Verlauf zu einem unzertrennlichen Trio zusammenwachsen. Die Entwicklung ihrer Freundschaft wird wundervoll beschrieben, sehr einfühlsam und glaubhaft, und ergibt gemeinsam mit den detektivischen Ermittlungen ein stimmiges Zusammenspiel.
Das Ende ist recht abgeschlossen, lässt aber genügend Spielraum für einen Folgeband. Also ich würde mich sehr über ein Wiedersehen mit unserem pfiffigen Dreiergespann und Co. freuen.
Fazit: „Auf der Suche nach Emily McCrae“ ist ein spannender und unterhaltsamer Abenteuerroman vor maritimer britischer Kulisse, gepaart mit einer warmherzigen Freundschaftsgeschichte und einer aufregenden Schatzsuche. Ein richtig schöner Cozy Crime zum Mitraten und das perfekte Lesefutter für alle ab 10 Jahren, die gerne Geschichten voller Spannung und Geheimnisse lesen. Ein wirklich toller Kinderkrimi, mir hat er großen Spaß gemacht. Ich kann das Kinderbuchdebüt von Fiona Longmuir nur empfehlen und vergebe 5 von 5 Sternen!

Didn’t read it, looking for ways to reach out to an Emily. I could just text but it’s more silly this way. Plus she’ll call me a dork or a weirdo and maybe it’ll put a smile on her face. If you see this, I still think about you not a day goes by without it. But my stupid pride….

The minute I heard about this, I knew it would be my vibe, and I was (thrillingly) completely correct. It’s a middle grade mystery set in a small, seaside town called Edge, and follows a girl called Lily who discovers this strange little museum full of a girl named Emily’s possessions, and she sets out to discover who Emily is and why she seemingly vanished into thin air. I loved the main trio of friends- Lily, Sam and Jay- and the super fun camaraderie between them, and there are some amazing secondary characters too, including a superbly named villain called Horace Snyde. There are some brilliant twists and reveals in here, and I had the greatest time reading it, honestly; it’s so exactly the sort of quirky, fun book that I’ve always loved and always will. It also gets major points for the incidental, same sex parents rep, because LGBTQ rep in middle grade is still all too rare and I’m so here for seeing more of it. Fiona is a really exciting new author and I can’t wait to see what she does next, especially because I’ve seen her discuss other projects online and they all sound AMAZING.

Mystery, friendship and museums.
A new town, a friendless girl. The start of so many stories. This one has a few differences though, which made it stand out a bit.
Lily is dubious about the new seaside town, she's bound to not make any friends. And it starts out as she expected, but when she accidentally discovers a secret, hidden museum filled with objects belonging to a girl named Emily, first Lily and then two other children become hooked on solving the mystery of where this girl vanished to, years ago.
And why is there a threatening man following them around?
A few things didn't make sense as this drew to a conclusion, but I did enjoy the book for its love of libraries, museums, a good portrayal of tween friendships, and their ingenuity in pursuing the enigma.
Quite a quick read, and with lots of short chapters, this will appeal to readers who like a proper story but need regular breaks.
For ages 9-13.

In Looking for Emily we join 12 year old Lily who is new to the town of Edge. Edge seems initially like a sleepy seaside down but then Lily comes across a secret museum about the seeming ordinary Emily.
With Lily's friends Sam and Jay, they attend to solve the mystery of who Emily was and what happened to her.
This was a very fast-paced, action-packed middle grade which I thoroughly enjoyed. There was a hint of danger. We saw that even friendships can have their difficulties every now and then. The story itself was just fantastic. I loved the mystery and the characters. I very enjoyable read.
With Lily's friends Sam and Jay, they attend to solve the mystery of who Emily was and what happened to her.

An intriguing premise with a promising start, but the story lost my interest past the halfway point. I felt like Jay was conveniently added to be another friend to Lily, this being made worse when he had little to no presence in the book.

Lily ist anfangs sehr zurückhaltend und bleibt für sich, aber ihre Neugier für ungewöhnliche Dinge kommt bei Sam und Jay gut an. Sam lebt mit ihren beiden Vätern, Brüdern und Hund in einem liebevoll-chaotischen Haushalt auf. Sie redet viel und lässt sich als erste für die Rätselsuche begeistern. Auch Jay ist sehr sympathisch und schafft es auch in schwierigen Situationen einen kühlen Kopf zu bewahren.
Die Entwicklung der Freundschaft zusammen mit dem geheimnisvollen Rätsel um Emily, das die drei immer wieder in Gefahr bringt und für Spannung sorgt, ergibt ein klasse Leseabenteuer für Kinder ab ca. 10 Jahren.

Das Cover ist sehr schön und auch passend zum Inhalt des Buches. Es ist einladend gestaltet und macht neugierig auf die Geschichte dahinter.
Der Schreibstil ist flüssig, sodass die Geschichte rund um die Freunde auf der Suche nach der verschwundenen Emily, sich angenehm lesen lässt. Zudem ist das Buch bis zum Schluss spannend.
Die Story rund um die drei Freunde Sam, Lily und Jay ist mehr als nur spannend. Immer wieder gibt es neue Handlungen und Wendungen, die einen mitfiebern lassen. Besonders gut hat mir das letzte Drittel des Buches gefallen und das Ende – großartig!
Die Charaktere haben mir sehr gut gefallen. Lily, Sam und Jay sind wirklich tolle Freunde und sehr mutig, obwohl das bei ihrer Suche gar nicht so einfach ist. I loved this little book. Someone was selling a bunch of books on facebook and this was among them - this is defenitely a hidden treasure. It's about kids solving a mystery- and considering that the main characters are around 12 I believe the book is pretty dark and doesn't really hold back.
We meet Lily who moves into a quiet town named Edge where everyone knows everyone. She makes new friends and finds a museum dedicated to a little girl named Emily. However, nobody she knows knows who Emily was. She and her friends go on a treasure hunt to solve a years old mystery all whilst adults are constantly dismissing them - including the police.
It's a pretty interesting little book and I loved all of the characters in it. It also kept my attention and I couldn't wait to see how it all gets solved. I liked this one a lot for a kids book and I can't wait to read more from this author.

I'll always take seriously middle grade published by Nosy Crow. They publish the kind of books I enjoyed as a child, books with good plots, real characters and well-constructed prose. Looking for Emily by Fiona Longmuir ticks all of those boxes and more.
Lily is new to Edge, a small seaside town, and is finding it hard to adapt after life in the city. Everything seems so strange and so different. Then she stumbles across the Museum of Emily and discovers a mystery. With her new friends Sam and Jay she sets about finding out who Emily was and what became of her.
I enjoyed this very much and could see and feel the sea as I read it. Edge felt real too and I'd be happy to revisit it for another story.

What a brilliant story. Creepy and tense with the right amount of cliffhangers to not make it predictable. Who is this Emily? Where is she now? Will anyone ever find out? Yes. They find out the answers to all of these and more. It's fast paced and has lots of twists and turns. I had my suspicions about who Emily was and I was correct. Yay! 1st time ever. Absolute must-read for fans of suspense writing.

I liked this book until the last 2 chapters.
- The mum wasn't dead and instead of finding her daughters, set up an intricate puzzle to lead them to light up the lighthouse to signal her to come home?! Seems extreme.
- Why didn’t the mum tell the police about the attempted murder?
- Poor Caitlyn is completely sidelined and Emily gets a whole museum set up for her?!
- It took 20 years and three 12 year olds to solve the easiest mystery ever written

I really enjoyed reading this book about the new girl in town finding friends and ending up solving a mystery together. This book was so good it had loads of different twists and turns through out the book. This book should that friends can work together to achieve things. I really liked the characters in this book as they all were so difficult and that made the story more realistic as we didn’t just have generic boring characters. I am glad I picked this book up from my local charity shop xxx

The pacing of the book was amazing as were the fun quirky characters. The main character was very relatable. The cozy vibe of the town was the perfect place to put a mystery. If you are looking for an easy to read book, this is for you. If you like mischievous hijinks and lovable characters, this is the book for you.

I was hooked to the point I finished this one in a day.
Straight to the point and might be a little predictable but overall it was a good read. Every scene made sense and every situation plays an important part in the plot. I loved Sam as she reflects that friend who's always with us no matter what.
and I just loved the representation of queer couples raising a family together.
