What if we made the monsters live in fear for a change? What if the people they attack fought back? What if they won? Katerina Chase, a teenage karate student, and her best friend were attacked by eight men and left to die. They say it’s a miracle Kat survived. She calls it penance. Damon Knightly feels the same after shocking doctors by surviving his latest suicide mission in Afghanistan. Honourably discharged and sent home to Australia, he reluctantly takes the role as manager and head sensei at one of his family’s karate gyms. Damon stops feeling sorry for himself when he meets Kat and vows to help her. He gives her a job and trains her in karate - but it isn’t enough. People are still getting hurt. Kat needs to help them, but more importantly, she needs to stop them from being hurt in the first place. They form ‘Our Cause’ to help people and catch their attackers but encounter monsters they didn’t expect – monsters hell-bent on stopping them.
I’m very lucky to have had the pleasure of being one of the first people to read this book. Such a great read. I love the characters. Shows great courage and resilience. Lots of action and on the edge of your seat moments.
I've just finished reading this book. I've trained with the author and a lot of the Karate is very familiar to me. There are, indeed, some dark moments and my wife doesn't like looking at the cover art, but it's a good, well-paced story. I would have read it faster, but my reading nowadays goes in between other aspects of my life. Books I don't like go into our street library after I've read them, but this one has gone on the shelf to be re-read when I get down to the 'J's (currently in the 'C's). I might get another copy for the street library.
I will not post spoilers, but I will say this has some trauma and dark intense content and scenes. But it also had empowerment and healing. I was blown away at this story. Just a really amazing read.
I was fortunate enough to be an early reader of this book, eventually credited as an editor.
I read a lot. This debut is a refreshing change from the standard male and female romance adventure / thrillers you often get. First of all, it's not a romance! But it is an adventure / thriller with some great twists.
There are two protagonists, a 15yo who was left for dead along with her best friend, and a late 20-something soldier who saw his fiancee (a midwife/nurse) killed in front of him. They are both good people dealing with trauma, don't think much of themselves.
They meet at karate and start supporting each other through their trauma and standing up for women and girls who are attacked.
All the characters in this book have depth and feel like real people.
Recommended to everyone, with a trigger warning for rape victims.
Awesome action packed book. Good interesting characters who work through their mental demons to help themselves and then help others through similar situations. Well worth a read.
