Rosa Luxemburg (1871–1919) and Hannah Arendt (1906–1975) were critical Jewish mavericks who both suffered under violent political regimes and sought to reform systems of power. Although temporally separated by the Second World War and the rise of totalitarianism, they held in common strikingly similar convictions about freedom, human dignity, capitalism, democracy, and political commitment.

Tumultuous is perhaps one word we might use to describe the world around us today, and one face of this is the citizens’ protests we are witnessing in numerous countries—West or East, ‘developed’ or ‘developing’. Looking at these protests, against, among other things, unfair government policies, racism, denials of basic rights, one can’t help but acknowledge that they are indicative of something very wrong, not only with the world we live in but also dissatisfaction with the people that represent (or are supposed to) us and the systems and policies they implement. And also, that protests aren’t something that ought to be the norm. Yet, A Good & Dignified Life: The Political Advice of Hannah Arendt & Rosa Luxemburg helps one view these events with a somewhat optimistic lens for drawing from the thoughts of two influential thinkers, Rosa Luxemburg and Hannah Arendt, it gets us to see that the fact that people are saying ‘no’ shows they retain a voice, and have not simply given in due to fear or become unable to distinguish lies from truth, the worst that can happen in any political system. In other words, perhaps all is not lost, though there is indeed ‘danger of ending up in “dark times”’.

A Good & Dignified Life: The Political Advice of Hannah Arendt & Rosa Luxemburg is an essay by Dutch author and philosopher Joke J. Hermsen, and translated into English by Brendan Monaghan, in which she looks into the lives and political thoughts of these two remarkable women, drawing our attention to how their thoughts can help us view and address the situation we see around us in current times, as well as really how some of their personal worldviews can be an example to even perhaps the sceptics amongst us.

Rosa Luxemburg was a Polish-born, German socialist, activist, and philosopher who was much ahead of her time in her thoughts, and foretold much of what Germany would face if they went ahead with the Kaiser’s war against France. A strong advocate of good education for all, and ideas like reasonable work hours and rest, she also warned against the pursuit of the exploitative capitalist and imperialist path, that much of the world was (and is) on. She was imprisoned several times, and ultimately murdered in the post-war revolution in Germany. Luxemburg served as an inspiration to Hannah Arendt who referred to her in her own work, where she warns, among other things, of the dangers of totalitarianism. In her essay, Hermsen highlights and analyses the relevance of their ideas and also links them to current-day events, particularly the French gilets jaunes or yellow vests protests that took place over 70 consecutive Saturdays against rising fuel prices, economic injustice, and the policies of the government, which she witnessed when living in France at a time when she was engaging with Luxemburg’s writings.

Arendt and Luxemburg shared convictions about human dignity, freedom, political commitment and the need to keep thinking critically. They believed in the need for collective responsibility and that if we turned away from the ‘public world’ whether out of indifference or frustration or a lack of time, we open it to risks of barbarism. Simply casting our vote and getting on with our lives was not sufficient. For them engagement was critical, and this would happen, as Arendt suggested through citizens’ councils. Both also saw that ‘a consumerist, capitalist society is incapable of taking care of the world and the people inhabiting it’.

Hermsen was encouraged to explore Luxemburg’s work (which she began reading only recently in 2018) by the references to her in Arendt’s writings, and found much that resonated with her. In personal terms, it is her innate optimism and love of life that strikes Hermsen and us readers as well, for irrespective of circumstances, even when she was in prison (where she spent some years), Luxemburg never lost hope, was always able to see the beauty of the natural world (the birds, the mice she observed, the beautiful night sky), and drew enjoyment from books and music—something that left me awestruck. This comes through in the essay as well as in selected letters of Luxemburg which are appended to the volume.

An interesting idea that this book brings up, which I hadn’t come across or considered earlier is how capitalism and globalisation, among the other ills they have unleashed, have also impacted our understanding of and relationship with time. In fact, according to Hermsen, the introduction of GMT marked the start of globalisation and alienated people from local and natural rhythms of time. This conception of time as merely ‘working time’ also explored by Charlie Chaplin in Modern Times, can alienate humans from themselves.

Another interesting segment of the essay is part 8, which detours into the world of imagination for a bit, picturing what an interaction between Luxemburg and Arendt would have been like, how Luxemburg at least would have understood and reacted to Arendt’s views. This is probably the third time that I have encountered an exercise like this (Dava Sobel images a dialogue in the form of a play in A More Perfect Heaven of how a young mathematician from Wittenberg, Rheticus may have convinced Copernicus to publish his radical thoughts and there is brief dialogue in Pirate Queens, which explores the lives of female pirates Mary Read and Ann Bonny). The one here is of course different since Arendt was only a child when Luxemburg was murdered so the conversation takes place in an in-between the worlds sort of space. It was interesting reading and while I feel I was more receptive of the approach than when I have come across it before, I still struggled with how to interpret it within the larger nonfiction context.

A Good & Dignified Life is a well-thought-out, well-written, and well-translated book, one in which one really can’t tell one is not reading it in the original language. For those not familiar with the thoughts of Arendt and Luxemburg (including me, since I know of Arendt’s ideas only indirectly through others’ writings, not having read her so far, and Luxemburg’s work, not at all), it makes for a wonderful, simply explained introduction to them and their ideas but also much more, for it encourages one to use their perspectives to view what is taking place around us and consider possible ways out as well. This is a thought provoking read, and for me, it not only introduced me to some new ideas and lines of thinking, it also gave me some more insight into the French scenario of which my knowledge is again limited. The book leaves one with a positive message, to continue to read, to think, to understand, and never lose hope.

Waarom verbeeldingsvermogen, liefde voor de wereld en hoop voorwaarden zijn om de wereld te veranderen. Alhoewel geschreven in het kader van onze huidige politieke crisis, biedt het essay weinig handvatten om daarmee nu aan de slag te gaan. Alhoewel Hermsen meerdere malen volksraden noemt, is er nergens een passage die de lezer echt overtuigd van de voordelen daarvan. (Daarvoor moet men toch echt zelf Rosa Luxemburg en/of andere democratisch en/of libertair socialisten gaan lezen.) De boventoon van het boekje is literair en historisch, en het essay is eerder inspirerend en leerzaam dan dat het Het tij gaat keren. In ieder geval zeker een aanrader voor ieder die sociaal betrokken is.

Hermsen lykkes godt i å knytte sammen Arendt, Luxemburg og den politiske verdenssituasjonen boka ble skrevet i. Andre halvdel av boka er vel så interessant, og består av brev Luxemburg skrev i fangenskap under første verdenskrig. Disse er ofte langt mer personlige enn politiske, og gir et fint innblikk i Luxemburgs forhold til litteratur og interesse for naturvitenskap. De er dessuten svært velskrevne.

My favourite part were definitely Rosa Luxemburg's letters at the end, they were so beautiful and I never knew she was this obsessed with birds and trees! It's so funny how she keeps complaining that people are complaining to her. The end of the last letter where she talks about the buffalo was beautifully written and made me cry! Rosa, you are on my mind

Hermsen besteedt disproportioneel veel tijd aan de biografie van Luxemburg, en gaat te weinig de dialoog met haar gedachtegoed, waardoor Rode Rosa wellicht onbedoeld als een knuffelbare spontaniteitsgoeroe uit de verf komt.

Op die manier houd je natuurlijk wel iedereen te vriend.

I picked this one up in a used bookstore never having heard of the author and liked it! It's a reflection on Luxemburg and Arendt's work set in the context of the 2018 yellow vest protests in France. A highlight was the imagined conversation between the two women in the afterlife-- they disagreed about Marxism and economic theory, but found common ground in direct democracy and citizens' councils. But what I really enjoyed most was the selection of Luxemburg's letters from prison included at the end. They're so vibrant and poignant. Hermsen wisely allows himself to be outshined by the better writers whose work he's contemplating.


p.s. I finished it on the plane on the way to a fire ecology conference, and ended up thinking by the end of the week that Luxemburg would have loved a prescribed burn association. A citizen's council of fire!

Ze opent een mooie geschiedenis, wijst op prachtige literaire brieven en plaatst dat ook tegenover de huidige tijd. Alleen op dat laatste gaat Hermsen erg snel over tot inzichten (over bijv de gele hesjes) die ik niet deel.

Dit sluit perfect aan bij het pamflet van Donner. Hermsen biedt ons de antwoorden die we bij 'De grote weigering' niet konden vinden. Zoals te zien aan het persoon op de kaft zijn deze antwoorden revolutionair - een radicale herziening van ons denken over vrijheid, verantwoordelijkheid en democratie is noodzakelijk om ingrijpende veranderingen in de maatschappij teweeg te brengen. Niet uit haat voor de wereld, maar juist omwille van wereldliefde: amor mundi. Daardoor zal dit pamflet niet in de smaak vallen bij toetsenbordrevolutionairen en bij sojasocialisten, die beiden net zo karakterloos en onplezierig zijn als de wereld die zij pretenderen omver te willen werpen, met het naïeve idee dat zij de voorhoede van deze utopie zouden worden. Echter, wat Hermsen beoogt - aan de hand van de politieke filosofieën van Arendt en Luxemburg, is het herstel van de eer en waardigheid van alle mensen, door hen allen een stem te geven middels burgerraden. Dit idee - volksradendemocratie - is iets waar ik al langer over heb nagedacht, dus dit hele pleidooi klonk voor mij als muziek in de oren.
In deze onzekere tijden is het ons de opgave om opnieuw te leren hopen, zoals men altijd heeft moeten doen. Nog 250 jaar geleden geloofde men dat koningen door God werden gekozen om over ons te regeren. Wie wil ons dan nog wijsmaken dat er geen alternatief mogelijk is voor onze huidige maatschappij?

Een mooie inleiding om, met Luxemburg en Arendt, een begin te maken met (het denker over) een transitie naar een meer duurzame medemenselijke samenleving. Met een korte schets van het denken en leven van beide filosofen wordt er een kritische reflectie op onze huidige neoliberalitische hegemonie gestimuleerd en (juist ook) op basis daarvan het denken over nieuwe molgeijkheden of 'een nieuw begin. Joke Hermsen omschrijft dit eloquent wanneer ze Arendt en Luxemburg the vroedvrouwen van politieke filosofie betiteld. Prettig geschreven en goed te volgen. In mijn optiek getuigt het iets minder van de lyriek die ik zo in het werk van Hermsen kan waarderen, wellicht omdat deze bundel relatief kort is. Dit kan wellicht ook de reden zijn dat het voor mij nog wat de algemeen bleef. Ik zou vooral wat meer over Luxemburg willen weten, daar ik (mede door Joke eerdere werken al veel van- en over Arendt heb gelezen) Misschien een een mooi begin voor een ontdekkingstocht? Aanbevolen als inleidend werk van het oevre van Joke Hermsen óf als inleiding op één of beider denkers. Volgende boek: Rosa & Hannah, de (on)mogelijke revolutie.

Alhoewel Joke Hermsen dit boek schrijft einde 2018, wat toch weer zeven jaar terug is, is dit boek weerom een onderschrijving van de actualiteitswaarde van het gedachte goed van Hannah Arendt. In dit boek zet Joke Hermsen de kernwaarden van Rosa Luxemburg in lijn met deze van Hannah Arendt, namelijk vrijheid, waardigheid en democratie. In het kader van haar socialistische democratie, schuift Rosa Luxemburg het instrument "burgerraden" naar voor. Een eeuw later zien we dat lokale bestuurders het begrip raden met burgers in wijken, enz. in de praktijk van hun beleid opnemen.

Although Joke Hermsen wrote this book at the end of 2018, which is seven years ago, it once again underscores the relevance of Hannah Arendt's ideas. In this book, Joke Hermsen aligns Rosa Luxemburg's core values ​​with those of Hannah Arendt, namely freedom, dignity, and democracy. Within the framework of her socialist democracy, Rosa Luxemburg advocates the instrument of "citizen councils." Het leven van Rosa is een openbaring, omdat ik ook lang beïnvloed ben geweest door vooroordelen over vrouwelijke denkers in de geschiedenis: het simpele verschil tussen jezelf ergens in verdiepen of je laten beïnvloeden door bestaande opvattingen over wiens ideeën bepalend zijn geweest - niet zozeer als wijsheid achteraf (de 'Uil van Minerva'), maar in toekomstige zin waar een kritische stem uit het verleden ons een spiegel kan voorhouden.

Tijdens mijn studie was het Arendt die mijn ogen opende, en het is niet verwonderlijk dat Joke Hermsen ook deze Duitse aanhaalt wanneer ze Luxemburgs leven in een actueel jasje giet voor het brede politiek. Luxemburg deelt Arendts scherpe pen voor politieke analyses, maar ook haar brieven uit de gevangenis zijn hartverscheurend mooi om te lezen.

Hermsen trekt de socialistische en antikapitalistische opvattingen door naar de 'gele hesjes' (gilets jaunes) dat uitnodigt tot een heroverweging van wat ons een politiek dier maakt, in plaats van de homo economicus die het toneel dicteert.

Een goed inzichtelijk essay over de politiek van het handelen en de ideeën van Rosa Luxemburg en Hannah Arendt. Hermsen schrijft toegankelijk, overtuigend en inzichtelijk. Verhalen en anecdotes uit de biografieën van de twee filosofen wisselen diepere politiek revolutionaire ideeën goed af.

De menselijkheid van de ideeën van Luxemburg en Arendt terug mij; "Zowel Luxemburg als Arendt heeft erop gewezen dat de politiek-culturele wereld die tussen de mensen in ligt geen vanzelfsprekend 'menselijke' wereld is. Volgens Arendt wordt de wereld pas menselijk als ze het voorwerp van onze aandacht, betrokkenheid en gesprek is."

Het tij keren, het boekje van Joke Hermsen over Rosa Luxemburg en Hannah Arendt is een hit. Het staat al weken in de bestsellerslijsten. Maar er iets iets vreemds mee aan de hand. Want de Rosa Luxemburg die uit het werk van Hermsen naar voren komt als een vreedzame, liberale en progressieve denker is niet de Rosa Luxemburg van de vorige eeuw die opriep tot revolutie en gewapende strijd.

Mooi essay over Rosa Luxemburg en haar ideeen tijdens WWI, Hannah Arendt en haar ideeen vooral na WWII en dat alles in een huidig perspectief van gele hesjes protest. Vooral veel over Rosa Luxemburg en haar strijd voor democratie, voorstel voor gebruik van volksraden, maar ook belang van zelf beter mens zijn. Bevat een mooie brief van haar vanuit de gevangenis; ook genieten van kleine dingen en tegelijkertijd ook zien dat dierenleed net zo erg is als mensenleed.

Het perfecte boekje voor onzekere tijden als deze!

Ondanks sommige communistische ideeën van Rosa Luxemburg, zijn er veel andere denkwijzen en gedachtengoederen waarin we de dag van vandaag veel uit kunnen leren. Altijd goed om zulke zaken te lezen. Al is het gewoon om terug wat hoop en energie te krijgen.

Het boekje viel mij een beetje tegen. Er werden veel opstanden en biografische gegevens van Luxemburg opgesomd, waarbij Hermsen steeds weer de link legde met de gele hesjes van nu, zonder daar wat dieper op in te gaan. Arendt kwam nauwelijks aan bod. Heel weinig gedachten en ideeën. Ik vroeg me de hele tijd af wanneer de filosofische beschouwing nou zou komen en toen was het boekje alweer uit.
