Mister Invincible is the masked and caped superhero that saves cats from trees, thwarts thieves and saves the world from a host of villains.
Unlike standard comic book panels that are linear, the panels in Mister Invincible are a mind blowing multi-dimension -- "the amazing power of comics." With cute illustrations and a hearty dose of humor, this comic will surely please the graphic novel fan in your life.
Five stars -- I loved the imagination that went into creating this comic.

«Imbattable, le seul véritable super-héros de bande dessinée!», що українською мовою звучить, як «Непереможний, єдиний справжній супергерой мальованих історій!» — це слоган, що повторюється багато разів, щоб представити того, хто виступає в ролі головного героя цієї історії. Я був переконаний, що «Непереможний» ще довго не заговорить українською. Це якраз один тих приємних моментів, коли помиляєшся, а посмішка натомість не сходить з обличчя. Й ось у кадрі на поличках українських крамниць з’явився перший альбом банд десіне «Непереможний: Справедливість і свіжі овочі» Паскаля Жусселена. Я прочитав його й це просто неперевершено, хоча в певні моменти переживав чи вистачить пану Жусселену таланту, щоби дивувати мене. Натомість, усі переживання зникли, а історія стала особливою.
Тож вам, напевно, цікаво, про що це бд, яке мене так захопило, і, що може бути там таким незвичним? Непереможний знає, що він є частиною мальопису, і не ображається на це. Він живе своїм життям, як звичайний громадянин у житловому масиві, щодня купує багет у пекарні на вулиці неподалік і щонеділі ходить поїсти до бабусі. Але ми не знаємо, яке його справжнє ім’я, для нас він лише Непереможний, який дивує кожною своєю дією. Коли суперлиходії з’являються біля його дому, він готовий, щоб запобігти будь-яким негараздам. Тут є божевільний вчений і його абсурдні винаходи, або Жартівник і його сила, яка пов’язана з механікою мальописів. Де-не-де він зустрічає нетипових особистостей, таких, як дядечко Кабанюк, і силу його слів, чи капітана Жан-П’єра, непохитного поліцейського маленького містечка, який постійно з’являється в різних історіях, чи 2D-Боя, підлітка, який починає працювати в професії супергероя і виявляє, що вміє працювати з перспективою. Такий собі хлопець XY, який глузує з Z. Таке життя для головного героя є звичною рутиною.
Непереможний — це супергерой, який має здатність переміщатися з одного кадру в інший, щоб розв’язати проблеми жителів міста або перешкодити пасткам лиходіїв. Автор досконало використовує панелі, щоб інсценувати персонажа, який рухається в часі та просторі. Спочатку ми не відразу розуміємо, як працює його сила, але через кілька сторінок вдається зрозуміти суть і стає ще цікавіше. Інші герої, які перебувають у пастці в межах світу, створеного Жусселеном, бачать щось зовсім інше. Їм, здається, що Непереможний подорожує в часі. На цьому, звичайно, немає кінця можливим жартам і здивуванню персонажам. Цей злам четвертої стіни може здатися трюком, який швидко набридає. Але я можу вас запевнити, Жусселен створив мальовану історію, яка далеко заходить разом із фантазією автора. Втілені ідеї — кмітливі, але на випадок, якщо його мішок фокусів може закінчитися, він наповнює свій світ іншими персонажами, які мають такі ж незвичайні здібності. My 9-year-old has proven herself to be a good judge of a comic book’s character. Thanks to both my current job working in a library and the state of children’s graphic novel publishing at this point in the 21st century, I am now able to come home on a regular basis with comics for my kids. With such bounty comes a more critical eye, though. My daughter has often told me, in no uncertain terms, that she finds far too many of the books I bring to be very similar. “They all look the same,” she might complain. Or, if the book has some kind of quest/magical element she’ll tell me that they feel the like they're just following the same pattern. Maybe that’s why as a family we’ve grown so fond of some of the French comic imports published this year. The Runaway Princess by Johan Troïanowski provided this kaleidoscope of wild colors and mildly baffling plots. Meanwhile The Postman From Space by Guillaume Perreault is this marvelous younger story that isn’t afraid to write something for the smaller children out there. Even Aster and the Accidental Magic by Thom Pico, ill. Karensac goes in strange, wholly original directions, though in many ways it’s the most standardized of the imports. But the comic that stands above the pack, that no one can beat in terms of timing, humor, and sheer brainpower, is none other than the winner of the Bologna Ragazzi Comics Award for Middle Grades of 2020, Mister Invincible: Local Hero. “Mom!” my daughter exclaimed after reading just one or two pages, “This doesn’t look like anything else!” That’s the least of it, kid. This book? It doesn't READ like anything else out there either.
He can’t fly. Doesn’t particularly care to move fast. He’s not super strong or have a massive brain. So what’s Mister Invincible’s power? Well, when you live on the pages of a comic and are the only one aware of the situation, you’d be amazed how much trouble you can get out of (and into). In this collection of Mister Invincible stories, readers will watch as gutters, panels, speech balloons, backgrounds, and more become tools for Mister Invincible and his friends. Mad scientists beware. As our hero says, “I’m invincible. Some day you’ll get it.”
In his New York Times review of the book, Gene Luen Yang talks about the degree to which Mister Invincible plays with the comic format form. He makes some comparisons to Scott McCloud, which makes perfect sense, and then points out that in this book you get the distinct feeling that Jousselin is trying to figure out how far he can push the comic form. Generally speaking, I’d say his experiments work. Both Mister Invincible’s allies and some of his enemies are capable of operating in a comic format, making it work to their own best advantage. On the good guys’ side you have an old bocce ball player (just in case you’d forgotten this book was French) whose speech balloons take on a life of their own when he’s peeved. Then there’s Toodee, a proto superhero in training who can treat the backgrounds of comic book scenes as if there had no perspective at all and the objects were just very small. On the side of the baddies is a villain that can go through the page to the other side with ease. The only character I felt didn’t quite work was the woman who lives backwards. It’s a neat idea, since Jousselin is basically playing with the entire nature of sequential art, but he kind of had to make too many exceptions for her for the storyline to continue. That may be why she only makes one appearance and then disappears for good.
The technical aspects of a book are the parts that will earn it its easiest praise. Far more difficult is tone. How does a comic creator come up with the right tone for a piece? In this, everything comes down to Mister Invincible himself. He does not cut a particularly striking figure. His shirt, which I now realize is a series of panels, surrounds a nicely rounded body. You’ll rarely see him run or even attempt to fight in earnest. Moreover his mask keeps his eyes a calm blank white. When he’s not speaking his mouth is prone to completely disappearing. In general, he approaches life with a relaxed, casual manner. Should he need to dive down to save someone, he’ll do it in a pinch, but on the whole we should all be so lucky as to emulate the massively laid back Mister Invincible.
As with any creator, you may sometimes find yourself wondering what their influences are when you look at their work. Pascal Jousselin isn’t prone to doing interviews with English speakers, however, so if his style feels like a modified Tintin comic, that may just be a coincidence. In creating this book, however, the story is long. Initially called Imbattable, in 2013 Mister Invincible appeared in “Spirou” magazine. In time, these strips were collected and put together into books. The book Mister Invincible retains that serialized feel. Though characters and the occasional plot do continue from scene to scene, on the whole each section is fairly self-contained. I am a firm believer in the idea that limitations feed creativity more effectively than absolute freedom. In the case of Jousselin, he’s not just playing around with panels and moving between and within them. Occasionally the Mad Scientist (Mister Invincible’s number one ineffectual enemy) will invent something that changes the physical nature of the book itself. He might shoot a laser and melt three panels (the paper of the book now has gaps you can see through) or create a machine that will split reality into two parts (which means a gatefold for the two different storylines).
Children like books that respect their intelligence. And books that challenge them can sometimes be even better. There are times when Mister Invincible makes you feel like you’re a smarter person, simply for figuring out what’s going on in a page. There is no equivalent. The book that comes to mind when I try to find anything similar would have to be Jason Shiga’s Meanwhile and even that nihilistic spree doesn’t really have the same feel as Jousselin’s. This is the comic you hand to the kids that, like my daughter, complain about how everything feels all samey. The kids that wish there were books that tested them a little. The kids that want a comic that can inspire them to create stories that go beyond the usual boundaries. Without a doubt, this is one of the most original books I’ve read for kids, teens, adults, you name it, in years. Incroyable? You don’t know the half of it.

Non posso che dire che è il fumetto più geniale che abbia mai letto, un simile uso delle possibilità narrative e visive del fumetto è assolutamente sconvolgente.

J'ai lu cette bande dessinée sans pouvoir m'arrêter, tellement le concept était innovateur et si bien exploité! Je vous explique brièvement: Imbattable - Tome 1 - Justice et légumes frais raconte les aventures d'un super-héros dont le pouvoir est... d'outrepasser les lois de la bande dessinée! L'on pourrait croire que le procédé perde de son sens après quelques planches, mais non: Pascal Jousselin trouve le moyen de renouveler l'aventure, d'y ajouter plusieurs gags, mais surtout, d'autres vilains et super-héros semblables à Imbattable. Malgré qu'on dépasse les règles de la BD traditionnelle, il faut tout de même lire cette bande dessinée de manière classique, ce qui peut avoir de drôles d'effets .
Bref, je comprends mieux pourquoi cette bande dessinée a gagné des prix, et pourquoi vous aussi, vous devriez suivre les aventures de ce héros hors de l'ordinaire!

Read it in English. This is such an original and unique comic book. The super-hero power... it can trick is own comic book by interacting in other panels/cases that he is in. Sound strange like that I know, but you have to take a look. Always surprising, very entertaining, funny, and the author really master the art of the comic book to play will all that with the incredible result he achieve! Awesome work!

I absolutely loved this! I thought it was so fun how mister invincible was able to help people out by using other blocks and was able to go against future and the past. I thought it was such a unique aspect to the comic and it made it so much more fun.
This comic is super fun and fits well for kids around the age of 8. It had fun adventures in it and many funny moments.

C'est la meilleure BD jeunesse que j'ai lue ces dernières années. Le dessin est clair, les personnages sympas et les histoires variées. L'auteur se joue des codes de la BD d'une manière super novatrice. Je n'ai jamais lu une telle chose, c'est brillant. La question qui me tracasse vraiment, c'est comment ai je pu passer à côté d'un livre pareil depuis 2017 ?!? Je me déçois moi-même sur ce coup-là. Pour un bibliophile, c'est faute passionnelle. (une faute professionnelle mais dans le cadre d'une de mes passions). J'ai honte vraiment. Vite le Tome 2 !

Декомпозиція коміксної “механіки”. Тут жартують не над сюжетними штампами супергеройських оповідок, а саме над засобами, якими комікс доносить до читача свою історію. Часто виходить оригінально, герой буквально ламає межі кадрів, перестрибуючи по таймлайну, а коли цього виявляється замало, починають відбуватися дива над самими спіч-баблами, авторськими словами та іншим. Гумор тримається в межах сімейного чи навіть дитячого. Намальовано приємно, перекладено відмінно.
А три зірочки тому, що сам сюжет зірок не хапає. Це збірка анекдотів, кожен з яких перевикористовує та рекомбінує різні механіки. Нагадує тест-кейси: ось ти з нижнього кадру дістав щось. Наступна історія - "покращуєш" тест-кейс, перемістивши предмет кидком в останній кадр оповідки і ламаючи іншу механіку. і так далі.
А три зірочки тому, що сам сюжет зірок не хапає. Це збірка анекдотів, кожен з яких перевикористовує та рекомбінує різні механіки. Нагадує тест-кейси: ось ти з нижнього кадру дістав щось. Наступна історія - "покращуєш" тест-кейс, перемістивши предмет кидком в останній кадр оповідки і ламаючи іншу механіку. і так далі.

This was AMAZING!
This graphic novel is like the ULTIMATE expression of, "Comics and graphic novels take more brain power to read than traditional black text on white pages." It's not confusing, but FUN to see how Mr. Invincible figures out how to utilize the fact that his world exists in a comic book to solve problems over various panels and pages.

Faceți cunoștință cu Invincibil, un supererou ce nici nu zboară, nici nu respiră sub apă sau se teleportează, dar care trece fără probleme dintr-o parte într-alta a paginilor, sfidând spațiul și timpul.

Довольно изобретательная шуточная серия про супергероя, сверхсилы которого — видеть и перемещаться между панелями комикса. Нарисовано довольно мило и сделано остроумно, но главная проблема таких произведений состоит в том, что они являются one trick pony — один-единственный приём тиражируется снова и снова, до бесконечности. Первые несколько стрипов — полный восторг, а дальше становится скучновато.
Больше всего понравилась многостраничная история про ходящего сквозь стены злодея, где автор заодно поднял уровень юмора повыше обычного чарли-чаплинского и тинтиновского. Второй том читать не тянет (к тому же я уже несколько раз встречал что-то подобное у других авторов). Вот небольшое превью.

Uma HQ mágica para quem quer entender e aprender a extrapolar os limites da mídia. Imbatível nos apresenta uma galeria de personagens cujos “poderes” transcendem o tempo e o espaço, mas não do jeito que os super-heróis tradicionais fazem. Aqui, as duas dimensões do papel se transmutam em três, quatro e até cinco, graças à percepção do autor de que essa mídia não tem impossibilidades narrativas.

Not since Jason Shiga's "Meanwhile: Pick Any Path. 3,856 Story Possibilities" have I read such a conceptually daring graphic novel. This book's fundamental reimagining of what comics can be and do is an absolute delight. And it's no stuffy treatise, either. The characters are charming and the story vignettes zip right along. Highly recommended.

Sometimes you come across a book that will remind you why you were attracted to comics in the first place. Mister Invincible is that and more.
This little gem is one of the finest examples of why comics is a completely different literary medium and not just words and scenes translated into pictures. This is incredibly funny with hilarious gags on every page. Mister Invincible doesn't just fight villains. He shows us why comics delight us.
As usual, Europe gets it right - when it comes to comics, they are far ahead than Americans in leveraging the true potential of this format. Big thumbs up to Magnetic Press for translating this into English.

J'ai presque 50 ans. J'ai lu des BD pendant toute ma vie, mais quand j'ai vu des recommandations sur Twitter qui parlent assez bien d'Imbattable. Après avoir vu deux ou trois pages online je suis complètement décidé à lui donner une opportunité. Mais buahhh, Il a totalement bouleversé tout ce que j'avais vu dans le monde de la BD. Superbe édition en charge de chez Dupuis. 5 étoiles *****.

wanted to read for a while, defiantly worth it.
I like the comedy, plus the ideas for the various super powered peoples abilities are really unique and interesting to see. Hope to see more issues translated into English.

This is so funny. Everyone should read this and be amazed by the metalepsis and by how Imbattable is just some dude that can use comic panels to rescue cats out of trees!!!
