A Creation of Tomorrow

Rate this book
Alice's daughter, Patsy, now missing, her granddaughter, Cami, was without a mother and the one person who protected her from her father's anger. Having no doubt, Cami's father, Tom, was responsible for the bruises, Alice turned to the police again and again, but just like when Patsy went missing, they repeatedly turned their backs on her.

Alice was desperate to find help. With nowhere left to turn, she turned to the most dangerous men she'd ever laid eyes on. Rumour had it that they were drug traffickers. The leader was thought to be the devil himself, and his men his demon disciples, but what choice did Alice have? She needed someone who could protect Cami.

They didn't wear patches on their leather, and they weren't called by any name, but they were brothers. For Rick, running a drug ring was challenge enough. Having each other's back was all that mattered until Alice approached him.

Drawn in the moment he looked at Cami's picture, Rick ordered Jonathan and Swan to tail the little girl and find out what they could about her situation. It didn't take long to discover that she needed their help.

What none of them knew was the impact their decisions would have on tomorrow.

I am a Canadian full-time employee - mother of two - grandmother of four - married to a wonderfully supportive man who writes in her spare time. I am trying to live at least part of my life doing what excites me the most.

I have had an infatuation with pens, paper, and notepads since I was a small child. This love affair is still as strong today as it was when I first learned to write cursive. I can't walk into a stationary store or down an aisle of pens and paper and not get sucked in.

As a young girl, I thoroughly enjoyed the library and card catalogs. I could have gotten lost inside a library for days, and I would have been in heaven - though I never admitted that to my friends because that would have been weird. I loved books. I still love books! I love everything about them! I love the smell of them, the cream thin or thick pages. I love the covers - soft or hard. I love the way a story can make you get lost inside of it - the author gives you the canvas but your mind does the painting.

All of it fuelled my dream of holding a copy of a book I wrote someday.   As my kids grew older the need got stronger. It was so strong I had to make it a reality. Even if I didn't sell one I needed to write one and figure out how to get it into a physical book. I started writing my first novel in private. I wasn't ready to share my passion with anyone. I was just too shy - too self-conscious. Eventually, I had no choice but to share my writing with close trusted people in order for me to get feedback - my mother being the first. I could trust her to be honest, yet kind.

Armed with my mother's input and eventually the others I was brave enough to share my work with I filled in the gaps making my first novel a much fuller story- and here I am - still shy and self-conscious with three published books! I'm not sure if I am a great writer or if my stories are interesting, but they are mine. I love the characters like they have lived a part of my life. I love the stories like they have been a part of my reality.

Anyway...that's the first mile of my journey. One that I hope will be a thousand miles long….

I received an advance review copy from Booksirens for an honest review. Colour me surprised! I enjoyed every part of this book. It has a very tempting storyline with great charecters. Cami is a bright and mischievous 7 year old. She is being abused by her father Tom. Her grandmother, Alice finds new bruises on her everyday ever since her daughter has gone missing. She tries to go the police for both her missing daughter and the abuse inflicted on Cami but they look the other way. Alice has no other choice then to ask help from the dangerous men in their city.

Rick runs a drug ring. They are many rumors about them which are mostly true. When Alice comes with her problem, Rick is annoyed and declines. Rick after some investigation sends two of his men to look after Cami from the shadows.

"She's completely off school grounds. The teacher hasn’t even looked in her direction. What is she? Grade two?"
Jonathan chuckled.
"Note to self if I ever have children" Swan stated as he climbed out of the truck "The Catholic School in town is completely irresponsible. Try the public school instead."

While on their watch they slowly fall in love with the little girl. She is a ray of sunshine in their lives. Soon Rick has shortage on men for his drug drops so he decides to send all his men on shifts to look after Cami. They all fall for her, even Buck the old man who has no love for kids. They soon start becoming a part of Cami's life. They bought her presents and looked after her even though Rick had warned all of them to never make contact. But how could they when she was so adorable.
But soon Cami's life gets threatened by one of Rick client because she was dear to them.

"See Cami, you gave me something I haven't felt in a long, long while. Something Sarah gave me. You gave me love Cami. You allowed me to feel love again, and I thank God for you every day." Buck wiped the tears from his eyes.

What I loved about the book:
• Cami charecter arc. We could see how she grows up and is strong despite her abusive upbringing. Cami is always smiles though her pain.
• Rick and his boys especially Buck. They give off a peaky blinders kinda vibe. They are like brothers and they always have each others back.
• The varying pov and the accuracy of it according to the age.
• This was a very addicting book that I had the pleasure of reading it. I couldn't guess what was going to happen.
• In short let me tell you, I loved everything.
• This is the first book in the series, there was no cliffhanger and a possibility for a love triangle in the sequel.

This book is an absolute perfection. I completely recommend it. But be warned of profanity, abuse and violence. I would rate this a five but the book was long and in some chapters the information was unnecessary. So this ends up with a four star. I'm looking forward to the sequel!

When you can't find the help you need, you sometimes find whatever help you can get. For Alice, desperate times have her taking desperate measure, when she has to protect her family. This is an intriguing tale that unfolds quickly and will have readers turning the pages to find what tomorrow will bring.

I loved the dying butterfly so I gave this one a shot. I really enjoy this author's writing style! Again another self published I assume but another great read. Completely different from the dying butterfly. Romance, drama. Buck is my favorite character and of course Cami. I can see this going into a very interesting lovers triangle. I can't wait for book two to come out.

Cami was in trouble, and her grandmother knew. No one believed that Cami was being abused by her father Tom, and the police reports that Alice had been filing were fruitless. Tom was going to really hurt Cami if Alice didn't do something, so she decided to turn to a local gang for protection. She was expecting to have to pay but little did she know, the gang's leader Rick had a soft spot for her and little girls in need of his help. The gang decides to watch this girl in order to find out what her father is really doing to her. They don't mean to become attached to young Cami and Alice, but they do. Now, they have to worry about protecting the two from Tom and from the gang's enemies.

This was the longest book that I've read in a while. It actually took me 2-3 days of on and off reading to finish it! But I kept on reading because I just loved the characters so much. I was reading in a lot of different spare moments that I had, just to get a chapter or two in. And even through all of this, I still had that moment at the end of the novel where I thought "that's it?" I didn't want these characters to ever stop talking to me.

This book has a nice balance between shocking/sad and cute/relaxing scenes. You would have a scene with Rick's gang fighting or killing members of another gang, and then you would have a scene with the same guys playing with Cami. The author makes sure that her readers know that just because the men are gangsters doesn't mean that they are cruel to everyone that they meet. They can treat a young girl like a princess, and still kill anyone who dares to put her in danger. Some scenes might get a little gory for those faint of heart, but it still was an amazing novel.
This was also a semi-realistic portrayal of child abuse. Everyone knew that something wasn't quite right with Cami's relationship with her father, but they couldn't get her to say anything. Bruises aren't uncommon on children, and police reports might not go anywhere for quite a long time. The only way for the gang to find out what was wrong was to see it firsthand. Cami didn't even show signs of being abused emotionally, she had gotten good at hiding things. The gang had to get really close to Cami to get her to say a word about her father.
After the father story arc is set to the side, you get to see Cami's life with the gang around her. They became a sort of messed up family, with the gang using the money that they received from their other activities to give Cami elaborate gifts. I was so sad when they worried about Cami's safety from themselves.

The romance in this book was also sweet. Rick definitely had a soft spot for Alice, and slowly Alice started to warm up to him as well. I had wished that it had gone further than it had, but it had to end for safety reasons. Such a tragic love story! Then, there is a romance that was introduced at the end of the novel. A bit of a triangle even. I don't know how this will work out, but I will just have to wait until book 2 and see!

Overall, this was an amazing thriller. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for an adult mystery/thriller novel with a side storyline about family.
I received a copy of this book and this is my voluntary review.
Overall Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

This book had me - hook, line, and sinker. I read it in two days when I really wanted to finish it in one! The characters were written incredibly well to me, and I was hooked instantly.

There are going to be some spoilers here so stop here and just read the book if you love family, mob, and intrigue! One thing to note is you have to ignore the editing errors though...

SPOILERS AHEAD::

Alright, this ebook would have been even more amazing had it been properly edited. I'm saying a 5 star instead of 4 star rating. I had to dock it because there were just so many issues with the grammar and spelling that I had to reread a number of lines to make sure I understood what was going on!
Cami is the star of this story. I loved that we saw her grow up almost completely. This book covers 8 years! That's incredible for a story to do, and I thought it was done well. I love the mob feel of the guys. I know they do shady stuff, everyone knows they do shady stuff, but when it comes to Cami they are all smitten, and it works.
To say I was pissed at how the Tom issues worked out would be an understatement. That is the one plot point that did not get resolved in this book. It's also one of the key points that really did need a resolution. Everything else was wrapped up quite well.
I thought the quote at the beginning of the book worked but didn't necessarily add value to the overall story. A better quote could probably have been chosen.
Overall though, I think this author has great potential because I was attached to Cami and Alice instantly. Even Jonathan and Swan piqued my interest as they grew to love Cami. Fletcher has a way of making you want to know what's going to happen to the families they've created.

OMG, what a story! I definitely recommend having a box or two of tissues available when reading this book. It will bring you to tears during several occasions. There is the atraction between Rick and Alice that you will notice and hopes that maybe it will go somewhere, but knowing that due to the different lifestyles it won't. cami is such a strong little girl that will have you laughing and wanting to jump through the book to protect her as well and strangle those that looked the other way while she was being abused. Now for me I wished that I could have reached through the book when the guys decided it was ok to just back away from Cami without a word quickly instead of slow and easy. Yes, their reasoning for wanting to do so made some sense, but it could have been handled better than how they did it.

In the beginning I thought Heidi Bindhammer was going to be one of those narrators that read through without any sort of emotion in her tone which would have been a great loss for a story like this. Thank goodness I was proven wrong, what a great job. Heidi brought the characters to life for you, especially when it was one of those moments where that box of tissue would come in handy.

Note:
Now one part I do wish to bring to your attention and not sure if it is due to the author or the narrator, but in the audio version there is no pause between the end of the book and jumping into chapter one of another story. So, watch out for that and happy reading!

I did receive this book for free from the author and the review I gave is done freely.

This book will get your emanations . Heads up have some tissues ready.

Cami is an amazing , strong girl. You will feel angry at how she was treated and not taken care by others , I found myself shouting at the other characters. But Cami's character is wonderful.
Oh the Rick and Alice characters, so wonderfully written .

Cami liked to go visit Mr. Randolph.
Outdoor Food Court. Alice Hendricks got her food & sat at a table.
The police didn’t seem to want to do anything about her complaint, so Alice was going to take matters in her own hand.
Tom Watson (Cami's father, alcoholic, abusive, possessive) was responsible for Camilla “Cami” Watson’s (7, granddaughter) bruises.
Dr. Andrews issued a CT scan, X-Ray & neurology to check into Cami’s condition.
CFS would be notified.

Lance “Zipper” Pearly (carpenter) went to see Cami in the hospital.
Alice's daughter Patsy (Cami's mother) went missing a year ago.
Tom & his buddies were drug traffickers & disposed of anyone that got in their way.
Alice spoke with Rick Stackston (father, carpenter).
Rick showed the picture of Cami to Steven William Alexander “Swan” Neil (carpenter).
The Heart Catholic school. Rick & Swan went to check things out.
Outdoor Food Court. They watched as Cami skipped school to meet Mr. Randolph (55+).
Swan & Jonathan (Rick’s son, carpenter) were keeping an eye on things
Rick went to see Alice at her house.
It seems Jonathan & Swan took a liking to Cami & started doing fun things with her.
Is there a romance in the air blowing in Rick & Alice’s way?
Buck who wasn’t fond of kids, so Bruce, Zipper, Jonathan (24), & Joe took their turns keeping an eye on Cami.
She was getting spoiled.
Sheriff Stanton was interrogating Rick.
Alice had prepared a party for Cami's 8th birthday.

Buck, Zipper, Jonathan, Joe, Swan, & Rick made it the best birthday she had ever had so far.
Sky came to see Rick, Jonathan, Swan, Buck, & Bruce.
Things didn’t go as planned.
Rick called Arkady (Russian, drug dealer).
The boys all continued to watch over Cami day and night.
Arkady (Russian, drug dealer) called Rick. The deal was on.
This 1 went well for Swan, Rick, & Jonathan.
Will charges finally be brought against Tom?

What will the future hold for Cami?

I do not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing free books from publishers & authors. Therefore, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one.

Warning: This book contains descriptive accounts of extremely graphic adult content, violence, or expletive language &/or uncensored sexually explicit material (child verbal/mental/physical abuse) which is only suitable for mature readers. It may be offensive or have potential adverse psychological effects on the reader. If you are especially sensitive to this type of material, it is strongly advised not to read any further.

An awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very professionally written drama book. It was extremely easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great description list of unique characters, settings, facts etc. to keep track of. This could also make another great drama movie, or better yet a mini TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is an extremely easy rating of 5 stars.

D. L. Fletcher was an unknown author to me before I picked up this book. I read the summary and was intrigued, and the few reviews this book had were positive, but you never really know what to expect when you start reading someone new. So, I'm pleased to say I really enjoyed A Creation of Tomorrow.

As I write this review, GoodReads has no genre listed for this book. (I have no idea how/when those things are added.) …but other sites have this title filed under "Crime Thrillers" & "Suspense." I'll say that those are not inaccurate genres, but hardly a satisfying description of all that this book encompasses. At its core, this is a love story. Not a romance (although there are sections that arguably include those elements as well)… but I won't expand any further, in order to avoid spoilers.

I've read plenty of thriller/suspense/crime stories over the years, and no matter how well-written or genuinely surprising those stories can be, they almost all tend to fit into a pattern or formula that an experienced reader can identify and anticipate. Essentially, one can expect certain types of twists and/or the inevitable "subversion of expectations" with these stories. Interestingly, A Creation of Tomorrow managed to subvert my expectations by not trying to subvert my expectations (if that makes sense)… and I found that simplicity unexpectedly refreshing.

If I could request one thing of the author, it would be to let me know what happens to one of the characters who hasn't been held fully accountable at the end of the final chapter. That being said, I have peeked at the author's website, and I see that "A Creation of Yesterday" is "coming soon." I can only hope/assume I'll get what I'm asking for when that title is released, so you can be sure I'll be picking that up when it's available!

In the meantime, I'll be checking out this author's other book: The Dying Butterfly.

A Powerful and Emotional Story!

Alice was desperate to insure her granddaughter Cami’s safety. So desperate that when conventional avenues prove fruitless, a chance encounter in a mall food court gives her the courage to ask for help from an unlikely and extremely dangerous source! With the wheels set in motion, it’s anyone’s guess what the fallout will be! Beautifully and sensitively written “A Creation of Tomorrow” had me from the start! THIS story got under my skin, got into my heart and got into my soul! The writing is outstanding and features a cast of characters that I quickly came to care about, I loved Alice’s determination, and Cami’s innocence! The character development of the all the characters was truly incredible! I don’t think I am playing spoiler when I say that these are DANGEROUS men, not cuddly teddy bears and I fell for just about every single one! I won’t say who I DIDN’T fall for, that would be playing spoiler and we can’t have that, but there were a few that I would have cheerfully fed to the sharks! The real shining star here though is the plot. Written with sensitivity, and in a non-sensationalized manner, this story could have been someone’s reality! I hung on every beautifully narrated word! There were moments that had me laughing, moments that had me on the edge of my chair whispering “no, no, no”, moments that I had to stop play and gather myself before going on! This story affected me! These characters got to me! I was stunned, devastated, cheered, engaged and at times enraged! The proverbial all the feels! Five fantastic stars! WOW!

A Creation of Tomorrow plot had my emotions all over the place one moment I was laughing and the next all I wanted to do was cry. The book is well written and brings up the very serious topic of child abuse and how some children deal with it. Alice is Cami grandmother and she has tried everything to save her granddaughter from her father and feels she has nowhere to turn but the local bad guys. Alice ask Rick and his crew to help protect Cami and at first he refused to help but then something changes.

Cami is a happy beautiful bubbly little girl even with her world being torn apart by a missing mother and a uncaring father. The chemistry between Rick and Alice is off the charts but will they ever be together? Will Cami ever be and feel safe? The plot and characters are well developed and written. The story is engrossing and heartbreaking but it is definitely worth reading/listening to. I highly recommend this book just know that it does contain triggers such as abuse, drug use and murder.

I received this book for free upon my request but it has no bearing on my review that I am voluntarily leaving of my own volition.

Alice Hendricks is trying to protect her granddaughter, Cami from her abusive father, Tom Watson. Enlisting the help of drug trafficker, Rick Stackston and his “boys.”

I couldn’t help but fall in love with the character Cami and I totally felt her pain, confusion, and anxiety.

This is a well written and engaging story with thoroughly fleshed out characters and some twisty turns. There is just enough cuteness and wit to make you keep turning the pages, blended well with drama, and stirred with a lot of action. I am so invested in these characters, I am heartbroken this journey has ended, but has it?

I never had such a wide variety of emotions while reading, I laughed, I cried, I cheered, and I mourned. This story was such an enjoyable experience, I highly recommend this book and this author. I am a fan for life.

It was my honor and pleasure to receive a free copy of this book but that does not in any way affect my opinions in this review of this entertaining story.

This book is one of the best books I have read. The story pulled me in right from the beginning. . Her characterization, plot- twists in the story, kept me reading well into the night. This is a unique story about a girl and the people she meets in her life. How they impact her life, both save it and harm it through the years. How relationships change and grow and how it shapes her and the people in her life. This story caused me to laugh, to cry and to haunt the authors page looking for more. This book can stand on its own but begs for a second part. I for one can’t wait to dive back into this world. I highly recommend this book!

The draw was different from the book, but I was hooked. Tough men who are wrapped by a tiny girl never was more appealing than in this story. Get your tissues ready, you will need them.
