Psalm 23 is probably the best known and most read passage in the Bible - a wonderfully reassuring picture of the believer’s life. Through it we learn the Lord God almighty is the faithful, heavenly Shepherd of his sheep - not only faithfully leading his sheep in life but also through the valley of the shadow of death - bringing them into his house where he will dwell with them forever. Reflecting on Psalm 23 verse by verse will help us see how rich and privileged the believer’s life is as we learn how personally God is committed to protect and bring his people to be with him to heaven. Table of 1. The Lord Loves His Sheep 2. The Heavenly Shepherd Provides for His Sheep 3. The Heavenly Shepherd Restores His Sheep 4. The Heavenly Shepherd Leads His Sheep 5. The Heavenly Shepherd Never Leaves His Sheep 6. The Heavenly Shepherd Protects His Sheep 7. The Heavenly Shepherd Leads His Sheep Safely Home
Helpful thoughts on perhaps the most quoted chapter in Scripture. These sort of chapters and verses can be so ubiquitous that we naturally begin to ignore or underuse them to balance the pendulum. Hamilton ably looks through this chapter and brings out the themes that have comforted and brought peace to so many over the centuries.
I appreciated that this book was written from a pastoral perspective. His admiration for his Shepherd as he’s an under shepherd is clear. He does a great job at pointing the readers back to Jesus being the Good Shepherd.
Here is a quote I appreciated:
“Second, the divine Shepherd who graciously and faithfully superintended King David’s life is revealed in all His transcendent grace and sacrificial care in the life of God’s incarnate Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus understood that He was “the good Shepherd” who had come to lay down His life for His sheep (see John 10:11–16).”
I had several minor disagreements with interpretations from passages about children trusting God in the womb.
