Blood Brothers #2

The Hunter & the Heiress

Rate this book
Nothing could be further from Amaury de Vries’ expectations than joining his half-brother’s company of mercenaries in the wilds of Scotland. A knight and a champion at the joust, he expected to inherit a holding—until the man he has known as his father revealed a terrible truth and disavowed him. Left with nothing, Amaury rides to Kilderrick, where he loses his heart to a beautiful noblewoman in the forest. A practical man, he knows he has no right to court the lady, but when she is abducted, Amaury follows, determined to fulfill his knightly duty by aiding a damsel in distress.

Elizabeth d’Acron has been a pawn and a prize, pursued for her father’s wealthy holding, and wants only to be desired for herself. Seized again, she vows she will surrender to no man—even the handsome knight who comes to her rescue. And truly, there could be no one more vexing than this confident yet inscrutable man, so concerned with duty that he could be wrought of stone—but Elizabeth soon learns that she can trust Amaury to defend her at any cost. She does not expect the seductive fire awakened by his touch, much less his conquest of her wary heart—but has she fallen in love with a man whose affections are already claimed?

Snared between duty and passion, Amaury finds himself beguiled by the lady who challenges his every expectation, but knows he has little to offer her. But when Elizabeth is threatened by a former suitor who will not be refused, Amaury risks his all in her defense, hoping it will be enough. But can he intervene in time? And will love alone convince Elizabeth to place her hand in his for all time?

Days of Chivalry

Amaury, a knight errant not longer a member of the noble house to which he thought he was born, finds a quest to rescue a damsel in distress.

Elizabeth had no affection for any man besides her father and he was long buried. Her uncle intended that she be married to a landless reviver who paid her bride price, but she ran.

Revivers found her with the intention of taking her back to her intended, but not without what they thought was their due. Just when things looked most dire for Elizabeth, Amaury came to her rescue.

The rescue was not simple as she trusted no man, but his kind and chivalrous nature drew her to him.

One would think that a happily ever after was in the offing, but multiple unpleasant adventures were had before that could occur.

This was well written, the characters were believable and the story was exciting and romantic. Four stars for romance with only mild spice.

Delacroix is on a roll with this series. If you read and loved The Wolf & the Witch, The Hunter & the Heiress will not disappoint.

Five stars, you say? When it comes to this author, it's rarely anything else. I love almost everything this woman writes. What's special about Delacroix is how immersive her stories are. They are rich in detail without once compromising the central romance. I know very few authors who have such an authentic voice that creates the atmosphere of the time period they are writing in while still keeping the romance grand in scale and wholly satisfying.

For The Hunter & the Heiress, I believe you can read it as a standalone as Delacroix does sprinkle in the backstory, but I will say, I HIGHLY recommend beginning at the start of the series for two reasons: 1) the story is amazing in it's own right and 2) Amaury and Elizabeth both feature strongly in the tale and then you get the opportunity to appreciate their growth in this book.

The Hunter & the Heiress definitely starts off running as the noble knight Amaury uses his skills as a hunter to rescue Elizabeth who has been taken for a bounty on her head by some rather unsavory characters. At the start of the story, Amaury is intrigued by Elizabeth even though he doesn't want to be, and Elizabeth is struggling to trust even the constancy of Amaury due to her past rough treatment with men. While initially at odds, I loved seeing Amaury's patience with Elizabeth as he slowly taught her how to defend herself, regain her dignity, and conquer past wrongs. Was he perfect? Absolutely not. Was he a little inflated with ideals? Absolutely. However, when he is wrong, he apologizes and makes it right and learns from it. I really liked this. Elizabeth also was sometimes too hard on Amaury and jumped to erroneous conclusions on their road to love, but she too learned some important lessons and grew as a character. At several times, she saved herself and I loved this.

There's a lot of plot threads going on and Delacoix delves into some of the defense politics, betrayals, and how alliances were secured. I found all of it really interesting and enjoyed how organically Delacoix wove the details into the story. All of the characters, even the minor ones, felt real to me and I loved spending time in their world, worrying over whether Amaury and Elizabeth could be together and everyone would survive whatever threat emerged next to secure power.

Amaury and Elizabeth face many threats as a couple, but still manage to have plenty of page time for discussions, intimacy, and arguments (they bicker a bit...haha). This is a romance, so everything works out in the end, but even though I knew this, I couldn't stop turning pages because I wasn't sure how it would work out. There were so many twists and turns up until the end and I loved the surprises and the ending. A lot of authors struggle with epilogues but Delacroix nailed it in this one. I really loved how she wrapped up her loose ends and revealed the tough but rewarding future Amaury and Elizabeth had ahead of them.

My only complaint (and it's a minor one so no star rating loss) was that I thought some of the arguments that Amaury and Elizabeth had were flimsy and in my opinion were only to create drama and were not necessary. The two that really struck me were Elizabeth's quick jump to conclusions that Amaury was not into her (even though folks, the guy is pretty clear in his interest) and Amaury's "nobler than thou I'm not good enough" argument. Both of these things had their place in the story as their fledgling romance grew, but I just found them dragging on a little long especially with all the bigger fish these two had to fry. With that said, overall, I felt the obstacles these two had to deal with were big ones and handled well. I just found myself wishing these two little things didn't come up quite so much.

On a big plus, as Amaury's and Elizabeth's feelings turned to love, I really enjoyed how this was revealed and how all of their issues/reservations over why they couldn't be together were finally laid to rest (and stayed there!). It was really satisfying to read how once Amaury and Elizabeth accepted their feelings, there was no going back. Amaury and Elizabeth were noble characters with believable flaws who I could relate to and root for, which, when combined with a fun, well plotted story, is romance magic.

The Hunter & the Heiress had everything I love in a romance read: an epic love story, high stakes, excellent historical detail, and an adventure that never stopped. I stayed up too late reading this the past couple nights but it was totally worth it. Highly recommended.

THE HUNTER AND THE HEIRESS is the second instalment in Claire Delacroix’s adult BLOOD BROTHERS historical, medieval romance series focusing on half-brothers Maximilian, Amaury and Rafael. This is hunter and knight Amaury de Vries, and former heiress Elizabeth d’Acron’s story line. THE HUNTER AND THE HEIRESS can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Amaury and Elizabeth) THE HUNTER AND THE HEIRESS follows in the aftermath of Amaury’s estranged uncle’s demise, wherein our hero will discover the truth about his family history. Meeting Elizabeth d’Acron, friend and ‘sister of the heart’ to his half-brother Maximilian’s wife Alys Armstrong, stirred something deep within our story line hero but Amaury found himself rescuer and protector when Elizabeth fell victim to a kidnapping, in response to her need to escape an arrange marriage. Returning Elizabeth to her ‘betrothed’ felt all kinds of wrong, and in the aftermath of her wedding and subsequent spiral out of control, Amaury and Elizabeth went on the run, in the wake of threats against Elizabeth’s kin. All was not well upon Elizabeth’s return home, a home and village she no longer recognized, as her uncle who laid claim to the inherited lands failed to look after the people in charge. What ensues is the building relationship between Amaury and Elizabeth as our couple struggle to regain a foothold of the family land, and the potential fall-out as Amaury must prove he is worthy of our story line heroine, a woman who is worth more than he could have ever imagined.

The relationship between Amaury and Elizabeth begins in book one THE WOLF AND THE WITCH, a story where Elizabeth and her ‘sisters’ are accused of being witches. Elizabeth was in hiding, refusing to marry a man she did not love, and Amaury , desperate for coin, captures our heroine, in an effort to return her to her future husband. Elizabeth is a strong willed, self-sufficient heroine with feminist type beliefs before her time. Always hoping to marry for love and not duty, Elizabeth is constantly at odds with Amaury’s ‘old-fashioned but era specific beliefs’ about women and men. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate but mostly implied, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of energetic, and colorful secondary and supporting characters, most of whom have questionable morals and attitudes towards women, money, ownership and $ex. We are introduced to Elizabeth’s estranged Uncle James, as well as several suitors who believe Elizabeth is their’s for the taking.

THE HUNTER AND THE HEIRESS is a detailed and intriguing story of power and betrayal, vengeance and determination, love and honor. The premise is captivating; the romance is seductive and spirited although Amaury refuses to admit there is any chance of a future with our story line heroine; the characters are startling and intense.

The Hunter & the Heiress by Claire Delacroix is book 2 in the Blood Brothers series. To say Claire is a masterful story teller would be an understatement. Once again, we are transported to medieval Scotland for a tale of adventure and passion. This man. This glorious, infuriating, handsome and beguiling man has captured Elizabeth’s heart and she would have her affections returned. But Amaury is convinced that he has no right to court a lady's affections. Delacroix is a skillful story teller who weaves together a fascinating tale of honor, duty, redemption, destiny and love. The characters will delight you and make you hunger for the next installment in the series. I didn’t want the story to end, yet could not put it down!

This book centers around half brother Amaury de Vries who feels both very betrayed and lost. As he had been surrounded in a life of wealth and nobles most of his life and leading the life of Knight who won purses for the sport of jousting and protecting damsels in distress. That is until recently finding out the rich noble he thought was his father was a lie, being told the truth at his biological mercenary father’s funeral. He has no choice but to join his half brother in Scotland living the life of a mercenary for survival. This is very different from the noble life he led these past fifteen years. The heroine of this story we met in book one who is the friend of Amaury’s half brother Maximilian’s wife Alys. Where there were accusations made that Elizabeth and her sisters were witches. She was also escaping a forced marriage by her Uncle to a man she did not desire or want to marry.

Now her betrothed had hired two brutes to bring her back, but Amaury his falcon, dogs, and a hired Squire,8m rescue her. It was right before she would have been terribly abused too. Except Elizabeth who distrusts all men did not trust them because of her past. Plus she is furious that Amaury still wants to return her to a betrothed that she does not want to marry! She assumes he is no worse than the brutes who had kidnapped her and it is all for a handsome reward.

The other problem is they are both very attracted to one another. Of course Amaury feels he has nothing to offer for his life as a mercenary and wants to return to France. Trying to win her trust he gives Elizabeth lessons in defending herself. He soon realizes how her Uncle betrayed her father’s memory not caring for their people and letting go of all the servants and Knights in the household. On top it soon is revealed why her betrothed desired this match. Soon Amaury knows he must protect the woman he loves no matter what the risk. Will Amaury return to France? Will Elizabeth be forced in a loveless marriage? Will she be harmed before Amaury can save her. Will these two star crossed lovers open their hearts? Read and find out.

I have been reading Claire Delacroix books for over twenty years and for good reason. She always writes novels filled with so many twists and turns plus with great chemistry with her swoon worthy heroes and sassy heroines. I am also a big fan of medieval settings and find some bits and pieces of true history too. I loved both the hero and heroine have been previously betrayed and felt perhaps they weren’t good enough for each other. Plus I loved howAmaury tries to help build confidence in the timid Elizabeth too. A captivating read revealing Knights in shining armor still exist too.

A book I highly recommend and look forward to the next book in this magnificent series.

Absolute perfection in a medieval romance story! This had the honorable knight coming to the aid of a damsel in distress. He teaches her to defend herself and she learns her lessons well. His heart is buried under disillusionment and betrayal and yet he sees duty and honor as his guide. He is drawn to the lady in the forest from the start but fails to realize she is his equal in everything until the end. Oh what a fabulous tale!

Amaury de Vries has become a mercenary knight after his supposed father betrays and rejects him at the funeral of his now learned birth father. In his shock he joins with his half-brother Max and becomes a mercenary. He's a knight to his bones, guided by duty, honor and chivalry taught by his Uncle. He becomes the hunter for Kilderrick utilizing his skills with his falcon, Persephone and dogs, Grise, Noisette & Bete. When Elizabeth d' Acron is captured he pursues her captors. He's been drawn to her since she rescued Persephone when she got tangled in the brush on a hunt. When Elizabeth is freed, he determines she must be taken to betrothed Calum Moffatt as honor demands and he'll use the bounty to return to his Uncle Raymond d' Evroi in France. Elizabeth fled Calum originally because she disliked him at first meeting but Amaury is determined the match was made for her best interests. In truth it was all about money and control of Beaupoint, her home. He takes his uncle's surname d' Evroi as his during the journey with Elizabeth.

Elizabeth has always known her home Beaupoint was a strategic stronghold. Her father was Lord of the Western Marshes to protect the area's borders from revivers and thieves. Her cleric uncle James now holds the keep and plans to turn it into a monastery. He let all the knights & servants go. Elizabeth & Amaury find it an empty shell going to ruin. Amaury immediately starts to shore the defenses as he knows Calum's Lord will soon be attacking after the truth came out at their wedding night. What follows is an adventure that must be read about with all the twists and turns. In the end Elizabeth and Amaury together fight as a team to save Beaupoint.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Amaury de Vries is a most noble and duty driven knight, but when his fortunes change for the worse as his true parentage is revealed and he is left with nothing but his armor and his destrier, he accompanies his half brother to a ruined holding in the Scottish highlands. There he meets the ravishingly beautiful but troubled Elizabeth d’Acron, a woman who fled from an arranged marriage and chose to live in the forest with three other displaced women rather than return to her uncle’s home where she is promised to the highest bidder. When Elizabeth disappears, Amaury follows her, willing to stop at nothing to protect the woman he has come to love. Without a holding or any means of support, he realizes they have no future but his honor won’t allow him to abandon this damsel in distress. Elizabeth, who has been treated horribly by men, overcomes her fears and falls in love with Amaury, but is thwarted at every turn by his devotion to duty and honor. The unexpected twists and turns in this story lead the reader on a merry chase, but ultimately, and satisfyingly, result in a beautiful HEA. Ms. Delacroix weaves a heartwarming, slow building narrative, complete with period appropriate morals, values and dialogue delivered in beautiful, descriptive prose that is truly delightful to read. A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and my comments here are my honest opinion.

Amaury may have been the most arrogant of the half-brothers when his story began. He had expected to inherit his father's holdings and position, only to learn that he was another of Jean le Beau's illegitimate sons. Shunned by the man he thought was his father, Amaury had no choice but to go with Maximilian to Scotland to what was considered the wilderness. His skills as a hunter and warrior would come in handy as they fought off bandits and re-established the settlement at Kilderrick, but how would he earn a place of honor and make enough money to ever have a family and holding of his own?

Elizabeth was the most vulnerable of the four women who had lived in the woods and defended Kilderrick. Having come from a noble family, she had no particular survival skills. She felt she wasn't contributing much to help her friends, but since she was on the run, didn't dare leave. If ever anyone needed a champion, she was it, and Amaury was more than glad to offer his assistance. When Elizabeth was abducted, he leapt at the chance to rescue her, even if he knew he could never ask such a noble lady to be his wife.

I felt this was the most classic pairing of the series between the golden-boy knight and the beautiful noble lady in distress. This tale was full of adventure and romance!

The Hunter and the Heiress is the second book in the Blood Brothers series by Claire Delacroix.

Wow, wow, wow! Claire Delacroix has penned a fantastic addition to this series. I started this book before bed, and it was so enthralling that I could not put it down until I was finished!

We met Amaury de Vries and Elizabeth d'Acron in the first book in the series, but if you haven't read it don't worry, it's not necessary, you get enough background that this book can be read as a standalone.

Amaury is a knight who was recently disinherited, so has nothing left. He joined his half-brother temporarily but now he is determined to strike out on his own. Elizabeth ran away from her former home to escape an unwanted betrothal, and wants nothing more than to be desired for herself, rather than for the power she may bring to a potential spouse. Unfortunately, this potential to bring power and riches to a future spouse has also made her a target and from the opening scene, we are thrown into the action as Elizabeth tries to come up with a way to escape her most recent captors. If you enjoy your romances with some action, and adventure then this is the perfect read!

Blood Brothers is simply one of the best series by Claire Delacroix. Book two, The Hunter & the Heiress adds to make that even more so. Each of these brothers has been betrayed by their heritage or what they thought was their heritage. None more so than Amaury de Vries but then Elizabeth d’Acron heritage has not been a help many times either.

This is a story of class differences but doesn’t the heart know best. At least it does when Elizabeth’s life is in danger. Amaury’s sense of duty and responsibility is admirable if frustrating at times. Elizabeth’s spunk and determination is commendable but she has a naïve spirit too. A wonderful story that I found a pleasure to read.

Even though it is clear from the teaser at the end who are the main characters in the next book, I can’t but hope that a second generation with stories to be told will come along. I must admit that Oliver the squire was a favorite character of mine so I would truly love to see him again all grown up finding his own story.

The publisher/author gave me a complimentary ARC of the book which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I really enjoyed the first book in the series and so found The Hunter and the Heiress a little disappointing in comparison. While I'm sure Amaury's beliefs in honouring prior commitments were part of the chivalric code of the time, they were frustrating for this story as they made him seem immovable and heartless towards himself and Elizabeth. As a result, the story dragged a bit for me although things improved significantly once they arrived at Elizabeth's family keep and Amaruy loosened up just a little bit. It was, however, great to see Elizabeth evolve from the frightened girl in the woods in book one, to a confident, knife-wielding, wrestling, lady of the keep by the end of book two.

This story is also quite different from the first in the series as it sees the two main characters head off away from Kilderrick and therefore almost none of the cast from the original book appear except in a couple of cameos.

AUDIOBOOK EDITION

Story – 5 stars
Performance – 5 stars

So happy to be back in this world. Amari really surprised me and I should have known the author will not let him be what he appeared in the first book. I loved his conviction of doing the right thing even if it is not what he planned and Elisabeth didn't make it easy on him. At times I wanted to smack them both for not speaking out and only guessing what the other felt. Lots of twists and the author didn't let me guess who was the real villain as usual. Loved, love, loved the ending! So happy I could burst!

Timothy Campbell is on my ‘eargasm’ list from the first book, and he really outdid the last one. Looking forward the next one, hopefully soon.

Loved this book!

Elizabeth is captured by revivers and transported toward the castle where her betrothed is waiting for her so they can collect the reward. Amaury and his squire, Oliver, go after her and intercept them along the way. He rescues her but continues the trek to deliver her to her betrothed, doing what he believes to be the honorable thing. He assumes she will be happy with her match. He was wrong. He has to rescue her again, and this time he takes her to her home to warn her uncle of a planned attack to overtake the castle where she was raised. Their journey brings them closer and secretly in love. This story is full of action, deception, suspense, passion, kindness, and love. I couldn’t put it down. I can’t wait the read the next one.

Wonderful Novel

I have not read a book by Lady Claire in quite awhile, but, I am very happy I bought and read this story. Amaury, the hunter, is a valiant Knight that has learned some hard truth about his life, causing him to doubt his worth, but not his honour. Elizabeth, the heiress, has also learned some hard truth about her life, but she knows she wants Amaury even if he is untitled and landless. A wonderfully written love story and sizzling, hot sex. I like many passages that were spoken between the two, but this one told to Elizabeth by Amaury is the best, " love is an emotion of luxury, not one fed by hardship". Just read the damn book, I know you will agree. I can not wait to read more books from this series.

This was an entertaining, well-written medieval romance. The descriptions were so vivid and the story caught and held my attention. I both didn't want it to end and wanted to keep reading to find out what would happen next. This book can be read as a standalone story, though it is book 2 in the Blood Brothers series. I look forward to reading the next book in this series as well as more books by this author.

Wow what an adventure, this 2nd book in the Blood Brothers series. What I loved most about Amaury and Elizabeth’s story was that for me everything was unexpected while these two found/fought their way into their Happily Ever After. Throughly enjoyed this book and looking forward to what’s next.

As usual a well written story and a must read. She’s only wanted for home and land. He will protect her with all the honor of his knighthood his life and wants nothing in return. As in life nothing is planned.

I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first in the series but it was still very enjoyable. The heroine kept making dumb decisions which seemed out of character to who she was described to be. The hero was my favorite character in this one.
