In 2013, Mike Simpson was still running missions in Afghanistan with U.S. Special Forces. He was forty-eight years old. How did he keep up? By combining three decades of Special Forces training, the ancient wisdom of martial arts, and his own specialized knowledge as a doctor of emergency medicine assigned to the Joint Special Operations Command. Now, in Finding Your Edge as a Man Over 40 , Mike makes his unique formula available to the general public, teaching you how to reach peak physical condition in your forties, fifties, and beyond so you can compete with men half your age. Learn how to maintain and build muscle through longevity optimization. Train step by step for long-term performance through these proven, science-backed programs of exercise, nutrition, recovery, and natural supplementation. If you think you’re past your prime, think again. In Honed , Mike Simpson proves that it’s not too late to find your edge and live the lifestyle of a warrior-athlete.
Honed is a quick and easy read with tips and advice on improving health and longevity. Each chapter focuses on a specific area such as sleep, exercise, nutrition, supplements, etc. The target audience is obviously those of us with a few gray whiskers, but I found that probably 90% of the information could be very useful for younger folks and women as well. Though there is nothing incredibly groundbreaking here, the book is full of good reminders and provides some good motivation for self-improvement. I took plenty of notes and came up with several areas where I can improve.
Thank you to the author and publisher for providing a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
A more or less complete guide as to how moderation, consistency and discipline equals longevity - both in health, relationships and career. Author doesnt bring much new to the table - but still a worthwhile read since the topics covered are core fundamentals for most curious people (or "warrior athletes") looking to improve. Anyone looking for guidelines and inspiration might find a lot of usefull stuff here.
This isn't a bad book at all, but it's really geared towards men who aren't very knowledgeable about fitness and health. I didn't really learn anything new here. Not the fault of the author, I'm just a bit more into this stuff.
Overall a disappointment. I'm glad I checked it out of the library and didn't waste whatever the author charges.
Honestly, I'm not quite sure what I was expecting, but the first two chapters are little more than bragging about his time in the military.
The rest of the book is basically a written conversation with anyone over the age of 40. "We used to be able to [action], now we have to [new action customized for being over 40]."
If you've never had a discussion with anyone about how your life changes after 40, you may be surprised to learn that you should watch what you eat, sleep, workout for overall fitness, and recover in abundance. If none of these things seem revolutionary, don't waste the time or money.
I have been following Doc on multiple platforms for more than three years. If you are a man over 40, there is no better source of guidance if you want to be happy with your physical and mental health, as well as your overall wellbeing. He is kind enough to share the wisdom that he has earned through his years of service as a soldier and physician, and I am grateful. Get “Honed” and treat it like a handbook.
To be honest, if you are a man of any age, or have a loved one who is, pick up this book and get the insights and information that will help you or them live a more fulfilling life.
Changed the Way I Handle My Health This is a great book that I recommend for any male in his 30's and over. The book is well-written and easy to understand. It made me take a serious look at how I was treating both my body and mind, and gave me ways in which I could improve them.
Great passing on of information for us older warriors
As a man in his fifties, this book gave me lots of information on how to proceed on in a healthy way of life. As a father lots to pass on to my kids so they may life a long and healthy life as well. Thanks Doc.
An excellent, straight forward, no nonsense, easy to comprehend, with plenty of explanation on what is being said on how to keep as active as we were in our 20s now in our "Greybeard" years. Dr. Mike continues to educate.
Doc Simpson covers a wide area of topics and keeps the reader interested. Read this twice, got more pumped up on the second read. Truly inspired to resume my way on the Path once again after a slow down. Thanks. USN retired.
I knew of Dr. Simpson before reading this book. It's a good read. It's filled with pretty basic advice, but that's actually preferred. Many fitness/diet authors BS about the latest fad, but this book just stuck to the basics.
Truly memorable. Its all the usual stuff - food exercise sleep but this is so well described and with his perspective as an elite athlete w a WARRIOR MINDSET THIS IS UNIQUE AND MEMORABLE! Read it.
This was a very timely read. He really nails the categories of men in search of fitness. I found his anecdotes practical and feel better prepared to face fitness in this facet of my life.
This book is full of great information. If one desires to become the best they can be abs be in great physical condition, buy this book and put to work what it says.
A lot of great general health advice especially what tests and vaccinations to take. Agree fully with learning BJJ and Muay Thai. I took up BJJ at 58. Just seek out a suitable school and instructor. Only criticism I would have liked some sample workout programs as an appendix.
