Many debates are simply an intellectual exercise. That isn’t true when it comes to the issue of abortion. When we debate abortion it matter because, as Travis Rogers says, “human lives are on the line” (p. ii). This isn’t something to be taken lightly, and it is necessary for Christians particularly to advocate for the most innocent of society who do not have a voice of their own. Toward this end Rogers has compiled a very helpful little book dealing with logical arguments against Abortion. In this review I’ll deal with what stuck out to me as the three primary portions of the book.

First in Chapters 1-2 Rogers deals with the many of the baseline truths one might want in combatting those who are ‘pro-choice.’ He begins by simply defining what it means to be human. He does this by starting in Genesis, grounding the value and dignity of a person in the fact that we are made in the image of God. This makes it worth fighting for the life even of the smallest of people (children in the womb).

This is not however a book exegeting the Bible telling us about how it teaches against Abortion. Of course that is good and right, but the particularly task that Rogers undertakes is to work through the logical arguments against abortion. Because this is God’s world any argument in favor of abortion must necessarily be wrong, and so you don’t have to be afraid to actually deal with the pro-abortion arguments. “After all, when something is in opposition to God, how can it be logically or morally consistent” (p. 7)? Very helpfully Rogers walks the reader through the most commonly used pro-abortion arguments, and with great detail exposes them for what they are: bad and illogical arguments.

In the second portion of the book as I see it found in Chapter 3 Rogers argues for unity around incrementalism as the best approach to ending abortion. There are many groups that desire and push for the immediate abolition of abortion. While this is a noble end, one which all Christians can rightly desire and pray for, Rogers argues that the best approach seems to be Incrementalism. Though he acknowledges that he would gladly vote in favor of and support legislation to end abortion immediately, he points out that incrementalism is the realistic way that we could actually end the abortion carnage. It was through a carefully implemented incremental approach that pro-abortion advocates were able to move society to the point it is at (p. 64) and it seems likely that this will be the way that we can truly end it.

The third and final portion of the book as I see it is at the end where there are significant appendices included. These include a list of healthcare providers that pregnant women might seek out as an alternative to abortion (showing even here the lack of truth in the common pro-abortion argument that pro-life groups don’t help women or give them an alternative). There is also a helpful essay that Rogers has written earlier as a college term paper. Lastly, and what I believe is probably the most helpful part of the whole book, is a handful of real conversations that Rogers and others have engaged in regarding abortion. This is where you see logic most clearly used and applied, and where you can see on a practical level the way that debates and discussions often go. I believe that many could learn from this at least one approach to discussing this issue with those who oppose you.

All in all I find this to be a helpful book that could help many understand how to approach a pro-life way of thinking. It clearly comes out of the heart of someone that is truly concerned with saving the lives of children that are being given over to death. I pray it will bless many, and Lord willing will be one of many resources that will ultimately lead to the end of such an atrocious sin in our land.
