Yeah…Didn’t vibe with this duet😕
It was off for me. Somehow the writing style and third person didn’t work for me like in my favourite books of Tiane Laveen- The N world & World of honor

First, I don't know why the author split this story in two but I appreciate that we weren't given a review of the previous book. We dive right in to the next problem!

You can't not love Gutter. He is complicated but direct. He never beats around the bush and I appreciate how straightforward he is with everything. He won't hold back his views and he gives you what you need when you need it. Easily one of the best characters I have ever read about!

As for Promise, I don't hate the girl. She definitely knows how to hold her own and she isn't afraid to go toe to toe with anyone. Even her mom. But, and this could have been by design, she felt like an accessory.

Unlike your usual romance novel, this felt like two characters sharing a space. There was Gutter dealing with his mom's impending death and childhood trauma and Promise dealing with her extremely religious mother, criminal dad and racism in her workplace.

The thing, is until it was addressed, I never felt that from the funeral home. It threw me for a loop. As did many things in Promise's life.

We dived deep in book one for Gutter but I think we got to the root of Promise's issues this go. Even Westley.

However, I just didn't care for the preachiness and random racist twist.

Yes, I know that there are black people who are racist and if the story called for it then address it but this felt... Last-minute and unnecessary.

As for the big reveal, I won't lie. I thought she and her husband killed someone and cover up the crime or something. So not as bad as I thought but still a good plot twist, if not way out of the left field. I especially love that the culprit is not who we expected.

I wasn't as into the sex this time but I didn't mind the sex scenes either.

If this was one book instead of the two, I think my overall rating would be five stars. Something I rarely do. But not because the book was perfect from beginning to end but because of the characters. Namely Gutter.

He gave us jokes, music, philosophy, honesty, vulnerability and so much more. He anchored this story and I craved dialogues that involved the hot-headed Caucasian rapper with no care to give.

While I wasn't a fan of the opening interview, I appreciated a different way to do an epilogue.

I don't wanna go because I just want more time with Gutter. I loved that the author never overdid the celebrity aspect or anything for that matter. It was such a chill vibe and I am a sucker for a playlist!

Wow!!!!

I did not write a review after book 1; I simply gave it 5 stars. I wanted to wait until after book 2 to leave a review, so here it goes. I loved these books. I have read nearly every TL book I can get my hands on and I've loved them all; some more than others, but it was all love. These books were no different. I love how she never makes us wait for the next book and releases them both, at the same time. Any who, this book made me laugh and cry. As with all her books, even though they are works of fiction, I always feel like I've learned some very important life lessons and this book was no different. It made me look at life, love, and forgiveness of self and others, in a different light. It made take a look at how I think about things and made me question and wonder why we, as humans, always make an immediate rush to judgement, as if we have no sins and dnt live in glass houses. I loved the self discovery journey the characters went on. I loved the lessons they learned and the rediscovery of self and what it means to love yourself, forgive yourself, and to love and to forgive others. I loved the lessons taught, but most of all, I loved the way this work of fiction made me look at my life and think about myself as a soul on the mend, navigating this thing called life, just trying to get myself right. I loved the message that nothing truly ends. We just move on the next chapter, and hopefully, it's a better chapter. I will read these books again and again. I recommend these books. I know I haven't said much about the characters in the book nor have I given a synopsis of what was in the book. Instead, I have chosen to talk about what I got from these books and how they made me feel and think. I hope whomever reads this review understands this review and know that this was the highest review I could give. Bc I walked away thinking after reading this book and the story resonated with me. I highly recommend these books. They were a joy to read.

2.5 stars.

Somehow I liked this one even less than the first one. The romance was more fleshed out, but everything else was just so damn overpowering. Again, the dialogue was too expository, even worse this time than before. Gutter just felt like an over the top, non-human entity. The other more spoken on characters like Promise’s mom, her overall family history, and her co-workers characters took on such an annoying angle. The racist overtones of this book constantly pulled me out of the pages even as a black person, it just felt so over the top and unnecessary.

The only consolation was the romance in certain moments, but none of the characters in this book felt human. They felt like caricatures of a stereotype the author has in her head, especially of black people, of which I was surprised to learn that she was one.

The writing needs a ton of work, and it’s certainly distinguishable if that’s what she was going for, just not in a good way. Dialogues went on for far too long, saying far too much, exposing details that the other characters should know about, making it obvious that it was for the reader to know.

The good thing about books, I’ve always thought, was the ability to get into a character’s head and know things. How they feel or felt about something, past and current events, and so on through description. Yet this author found a way to misuse such a simple tool. Instead of describing feelings appropriately, she had the characters flat out saying everything, and often in an obnoxious and loud manner even. And, instead, described the most mundane actions like someone scratching an itch or picking their nose.

All that and then some just made the reading experience both underwhelming and overwhelming somehow. I can’t explain further, but it’s not a bad book. Just not for me.

Awesome read!!! A must read!!!

I love Gutter and Promise. I don’t normally write a review on a book but when I do you must know I was touched by it. I loved Gutter. He loved with all his heart. He was a forced to deal with but he was himself throughout the book. With Gutter it what you see is what you get. I loved Gutter’s character the most. I just love how he loved the people in his life. Promise was an awesome person too. She been through a lot. She overcame the things in her life and did her. I love her relationship with her brother too. He was always there for her until Gutter step into the picture. I loved how she stood up for herself and didn’t let things keep her down. She was ashamed of the shit she has done but she owns it once it came out. I’m glad that Gutter was there for her.
Thank you for this book Ms. Laveen. I thought it was one of your best books. I love all your books but this one was one of favorite and thank you for writing it. It touched me deeply and it hit close to home to me. I could identify with each one of your character. I felt everything that Gutter and Promise went through especially when Gutter’s mom died.

This series right here...whew!!

So no spoilers...but every time I think I've read the best Tiana Laveen book, she writes a new one that tops the last one! Sometimes the wait for a part two or three can be so hard, especially if the author is as good as this one so what a true treat to not only get this on the Holiday weekend BUT to get both parts at the same time...so no waiting! PERFECT ! While reading about Gutter and CB, I experienced so many emotions , I ugly, hard laughed and ugly cried, I fussed, got mad, shook my head and sucked my teeth lol, cursed and was taken on a beautiful journey of two beautiful, passionate, perfectly imperfect people who were strong apart but stronger together. Definitely a must read and a keeper....

A very emotional and great read

Gutter is a singer making great music doing well songwriting for others doing tours living your best life but you have childhood memories and issues that need to be addressed and worked thru your mom left but she always been watching from afar you have a non existing relationship but she reaches out and you come and while on this journey with her you meet the love of your life in a funeral home Promise what a great name well she has a troubled past and some issues also but there’s some heartbreaking and heartwarming and heart wrenching scenes in this book I just loved Gutter’s and Promise journey to forever and his breakthrough with his mom his heart to heart with his dad I could go on forever with this book enjoyed it tremendously

Like A Diamond!!

We are so glad and grateful to be thrown right back into the action. The story picks up right were we left off and its full steam ahead! The writer in this installment gets to the heart of this series and there are going to be some lessons learned and some hard truths brought to the light. We are given a complex couple who recognize in each other that they are not.pushing for perfection, but something that passes that. The writer gives us a candid look at some real life !matters and hits a homerun. I advise that you read the first story to understand the main characters and the stellar supporting cast of characters. This was a really good look at life and coming out whole on the other side.

Gutter- Part 2: The Shine was Outstanding

Gutter and Promise are a couple of people who went through hell and back!!! I'd be laughing one minute, crying the next then Falling deeper in love with these characters. The sexy times were off the freaking chart. I love the characters strength of will and how they had each other's back through, whatever. I loved Gutter's honesty and how nurturing Promise was with the people she cared for. She seemed like a healer. Gutter's family, Promise and Wesley stole my heart. Please check out Gutter: Part 1 and Part 2. If you can't read it now, buy it and save it for later! It's an Awesome read!!😍😍😍👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Good and unrealistic

I really liked this book because it touched on a lot of the mental health issues that women go through in a relationship. Black and white women can make poor relationship chooses. The reason I only give 3stars is because both characters were 30 or close to. To me and this is my opinion my review they were just way tooo deep for me I hate to say this but to me they were tooo mature for there ages. I know they went through some things, I found myself while reading thinking G is not a 30y old white singer. It took some of the enjoyment of the book away for me.

Excellent Dialog, Beautiful Story!! ❤

Tiana never just gives you a story. She gives you a discussion. Things to think about long after the book is over. Our parents have such a profound affect on our relationships with other ppl. It defines our character and choices. So many gems in this book. Some I agreed with and others made me weep. Loved Gutter and Promise's love story but I loved Jenny and Zakes story more. I was truly moved and it didn't trigger me surprisingly. Thank you Tiana for another moving journey to remember!

In the first part of the series, I thought that the story might be predictable and I just knew how it would end. I was so wrong. This was a great read that involved deceit, forgiveness, danger, violence, etc. It was a jammed packed story that was quite entertaining. Kudos to the author for deviating from her usual format of 1 long story. I found it easier to follow along and more enjoyable. FYI, I absolutely love Gutter’s character. I love men that don’t deviate and don’t mind telling it like it is.

I cried

Read parts one and two. Couldn’t put it down once I started reading. Got them in September but just read yesterday and today. I could read them again tomorrow. I love Zeke and Promise!

The secret regarding Promise had me guessing and everyone was wrong! Boy was it surprised when it was revealed and the way Gutter found out was interesting.

It tore me up at the end regarding Jenny. Had to get a couple of kleenex but it was just a well written story. Now on to the other stories I haven't read yet.

If II could stop crying!

This book right here packed in every emotion in spades! This was so good! Zake and Promise‘s story was richly told. Zake’s heighten sensitivity, possessiveness, and love for Promise was deep. Her quiet strength and vulnerability was relatable. I absolutely loved this read. This will definitely be in my reread pile. Ms. Laveen commands every emotion you’ve got and holds it hostage until the final word has been read!

Brilliant as always

Tianna is one of my favorite authors. She writes about some of the most interesting characters and relationship dynamics. These two books were so good. I couldn’t put them down. Gutter was just as real as she could write him and easy to fall in love with. Promise was fierce and she let the haters know she was no chump!

Bright shine!☺

I loved this book. Laughed and cried through both books. Zake and Promise we're fantastic. They were willing to work on their relationship even when the "Sun didn't shine on their front door". I didn't read the past few books by Ms. Laveen, they really weren't my style, but this is one of my favorites. 5 stars all the way!

From the Gutter to the Promise..forever

Gutter is a troubled man who has to make a major decision. Life is churning around the celebrity. However his mother brings him face to face with his destiny. Trouble seems to gravitate to he and his lady love. However Gutter is a fixer and he does so to the last line. Great read and book 2 is the best.
