John Tyler #2

Black Run

Rate this book
The epic second novel from the author of the acclaimed Anthrax Island.

John Tyler has a new mission: capture a heavily protected target from the Alps and smuggle him back into the UK in time for Christmas.

La Rochelle in the dead of night: Tyler boards the Tiburon, a rusting freighter crewed by smugglers and mercenaries, for the last leg of his journey. But he is short on time. His mark’s security team has pursued him across France, determined to retrieve their boss, and they won’t be deterred by an ocean. The race is on.

Tyler heads into the Bay of Biscay in a storm, with a pursuing boat snapping at his heels. But when his prisoner is found murdered inside a sealed hold on the ship, everyone on board becomes a suspect. In the flickering light of the Tiburon’s passageways there’s nowhere to run, but everywhere to hide.

Some might think the situation is spiralling out of control, but they don’t know John Tyler…

Having enjoyed DL Marshall’s debut novel, Anthrax Island, I did not hesitate to try Black Run and was not disappointed. Barely recovered from his previous adventure, John Tyler is back, and this time his mission is to capture a heavily protected target and bring him back to the UK. The story alternates between the present, and the previous two weeks in the Alps where Tyler and his team were observing the target. This means the full story is only slowly revealed, but the short chapters keep the action moving along at a breakneck pace.
The book opens with a dramatic car chase as Tyler is pursued all the way to the French port of La Rochelle where he has arranged to board the Tiburon, a rusty freighter crewed by smugglers and mercenaries. The graphic descriptions of the conditions on board the ship, and the stormy seas as they sail through the night, make the isolation and danger all too vivid. The fact that Tyler doesn’t know who he can trust just adds to the tension. He is a skilled and resourceful operative, despite his flaws, and I look forward to reading the next book in this series. There is a cinematic quality to the narrative that would make for a great action movie. Thanks to Canelo and NetGalley for a digital copy to review.

After reading Anthrax Island, I was expecting another balls out, action-packed thriller from this author, and that is precisely what I got!

This time, we find Tyler shortly after the end of the last book and are thrown almost instantly into a high-octane car chase through a small French village!

The remainder of the story uses a 'then and now' narrative to explain the mission and events that have already taken place in the mountains, leading to Tyler ending up on the frankly unsafe-sounding 'Tiburon' freighter, attempting to get back to the UK in one piece. I generally enjoy this way of slowly revealing the events leading up to the present, and this one was done very well!

The locked room element of being stuck on the ship was also done very well and added an excellent air of mystery. Chuck in a few twists, turns, a no-nonsense hero and a whole load of action, you are in for a great read!

High octane thrills from page one!

Well, John Tyler is back, and with a bang. In the follow up to "Anthrax Island", Danny Marshall has delivered a book which moves everything up a gear. Not long after the events of "Anthrax", we start off with a car chase through the tight alleys of an Alpine town, and end up on a ship on the high seas. So much is going on, you regularly feel the need to stop for breath.

Tyler, along with a crew of hand-picked mercenaries, has captured a target and plans to deliver him back to the UK. Who is he? Why is he so important? Time will tell. As the team make their way across France to the coast, where a ship awaits, they are pursued by allies of the captive. When they arrive, a storm is brewing, literally and metaphorically, as the ship's captain fears for the crossing and taking Tyler's beloved Audi aboard.

A stormy crossing of the Bay of Biscay involves a boat chase, more than one murder, and a potential spy in the camp. Tyler's problems just keep on mounting, as the odds stack up and he swiftly runs out of options. We even get a locked-room mystery.

This book is a non-stop rollercoaster, plus all those other expressions people use to describe a manic chase movie. It's so different from the claustrophobic feel of "Anthrax Island", and yet perfectly captures the frenzy of a mission on the edge of blowing up. Along the way we learn a bit more about Tyler's background, and the fate of his brother, only hinted at previously. Fans will love the close-up details about the tactics, weapons and cars Tyler uses along the way.

I was grateful to NetGalley and Canelo for the chance to read an ARC, but you better believe I can't wait to get my hands on a real copy! Thoroughly recommended for thriller fans everywhere.

Firstly I must say thank you so much to Danny for my signed copy of Black Run, I’ve been waiting most of the year for it!

From the very first page this is an absolutely high octane thriller, I was so gripped by it!

The plot revolves around our Hero, John Tyler, smuggling a heavily protected target into the UK, Alive, so he can be interrogated. And it’s not an easy journey, Tyler has to take to deliver him! It involves shoot-outs and mayhem in a French Alps snow resort, a thrilling car chase to a cargo ship. Then a locked room mystery on a cargo ship, being sailed by undesirables who want to double cross Tyler at every turn!

I must say that the descriptions of the cargo ship Tiburon, are written so graphically, that it felt like I was on the ship with Tyler. Not helped by the fact that I have PTSD from a very nasty North Atlantic Cruise…. So I could actually feel myself there, and hear all the creaks and moans of the ship on a stormy sea! But isn’t that part of the magic of a book, when the reading is almost tangible? And Danny Marshalls talent at writing so descriptively makes for a brilliant, gripping and detailed read.

I’m not giving any of the plot away, but I will say that a locked room mystery thrown into the midst of a fast paced, riveting storyline, is just superb and will keep you turning the pages until the end…….. and what an end!!!!

If you are a fan of what I call, boys-own thrillers, you will love the John Tyler series, start with Anthrax Island and then Black Run, you won’t be disappointed! I hope that Black Run will blow up and be one of the thriller books of 2022!

5 ⭐️ Read! 👏🔥💣👏

D.L. Marshall’s follow-up to his excellent debut novel ANTHRAX ISLAND is a supremely confident action thriller and mystery. The author successfully blends elements of Alistair MacLean adventure with Bond/Bourne spy action and locker-room mystery into a page-turning cocktail that is irresistible. Marshall skillfully unfolds his story by mixing the present with events in the two-week lead-up to Tyler boarding the Tiburon with his human cargo. The action is frequent and bloody but described with self-awareness and frequent nods to popular culture– notably The Beatles, Band Aid. and, like the latest Bond movie, elements of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. The reader has fun spotting these obvious and not-so-obvious references. There are twists galore and a cliff-hanger conclusion that leaves you wanting more. BLACK RUN shows Marshall to be a writer of immense talent, whilst Tyler is a hero whose human fallibilities make him endearing and less of a superman than others that flood the genre.

Fresh, smart and utterly captivating - a gem of the action thriller genre

John Tyler has a lot on his plate: shadowy pursuers trying to get there principal back. A killer who wreaks havoc on a derelict ship contending with an angry sea. Murderous smugglers and mercenaries of dubious alliance. And finally, a deadly conspiracy from the past with the potential to ruin Tyler’s future…

Those are the ingredients of D. L Marshall’s second powerhouse of an adrenaline read. It is both exciting and deeply satisfying when you come across a new author who offers a fresh take on beloved tropes.

Marshall fits that bill perfectly. Seamlessly transitioning genres and spinning a believable, exciting narrative whose many twists and turns might even catch seasoned readers by surprise.

The author has therefore only solidified the excellent impression left by his debut ANTHRAX ISLAND. And with John Tyler he has created an unconventional and above all competent and mysterious lead. I can’t wait to find out where Marshall takes him next. My first must-read of 2022!

Murder, confined spaces, corruption and car chases... it must be a D L Marshall novel! With exhilarating chase scenes through snow-capped mountains, pulse-pounding fights to the death on stormy seas, masterful plotting and a healthy dose of Marshall's wit, Black Run boasts more action than a box office bestseller and is twice as thrilling. This book was glued to my hands for three days straight.

A very good read. I liked John's character. Lot of action. Even though I haven't read book 1 yet I will be checking it out. I'm looking forward to the next book. 5*.

At times quite gripping and atmospheric, but, for me, spoiled by gratuitous and extreme violence. Characterisation was poor. Timeline kept flipping back and forward - irritating. And, in common with all action genres, the hero never misses, but the villains miss constantly, even with automatic weapons.

John Tyler is off to a maritime adventure aboard a shady cargo ship. Expect the same high-stakes action like the first novel in the series and the same colourful cast of characters to complement the action.

My favourite one in the series! You can almost feel the salty waves jump off the pages of this novel!
