How full are the pews at your church? This is a question that Yaw Osei-Owusu challenges his audience to ask, encouraging them to look at the realities of the African Diaspora and how a culture that worked for one generation may not work for the next. Drawing on his own experiences and observations, he has created an unflinching and authentic examination of the struggles African Diaspora churches undoubtedly face as they try to juggle traditional and western-world ideals and expectations.By the end of the book, Yaw will have you asking another question altogether – How full can the pews at your church be?Read The African Elephant to see!
Well Written book, my cousin bought this book for my dad and the leaders of my church. Yaw did an excellent job capturing the experience of my fellow Ghanaian youth. I feel the strong sense of familiarity, community, and tradition that my parents feel when they gather at church, but they just don’t understand that their kids are in a whole different world in Canada, so don’t always feel that connection. As a Sunday school teacher I have to understand that another generation won’t appreciate what I do, but its my duty to help find a way. I’m glad Yaw could testify about ministries that are doing more than saying “Youth- future leaders”. Its up to us young and motivated leaders to sit at the table and make change on behalf of the younger generation. This book gives me motivation to keep pushing for God’s kingdom to be a priority among my fellow Ghanaian Canadians.
