Harry Bauer is a paid assassin. After eight years with the SAS he’s good at it. He works for Cobra, and his job is to punish those who are beyond the law, who commit crimes against humanity.
So when a US senator asks him to go to Peru, to a remote village in the sacred Valley of the Incas, to find out who killed a young archeologist, Harry is not happy. He is even less happy when the senator shows him a handwritten letter from a mysterious Carl Allen, that says the Supay, the daemons of Ukupacha, the Inca underworld, are rising up to eat the souls of humanity. Harry is a killer, not a gumshoe or a shrink.
But when he arrives in San Julian, high in the Andes, and he meets Dr. Liz Calder, an archeologist obsessed with Inca sacrificial rituals, when he hears the whispers about the dead and the vanished, and the slaves, Harry begins to change his mind. Maybe, just maybe, the greatest crime against humanity is being perpetrated right there, in the shadow of Ukupacha…

In this Harry Bauer story, the tenth in the series, Harry accepts an assignment that is out of the ordinary. He's in Peru at the request of COBRA and a friendly US Senator, and he's playing detective, instead of assassin.
It seems the young adult son of the Senator's influential friend has died under suspicious circumstances. Officially, his death has been ruled suicide, but things don't quite add up to Harry. Maybe it was murder. Maybe it was the result of the archeological dig he was working with a group of fellow students under the direction of an attractive woman director. Maybe it had something to do with the scientific medical research being conducted nearby by another attractive woman director.
Harry's latest adventure starts with an attempt on his life before he can leave the US. Another attempt in the highlands of Peru is proof enough for Harry that something isn't quite right, and that there's an inside leak putting his mission and his life at risk.
As usual, Harry leaves a lot of dead bodies lying around. It wouldn't be a Harry Bauer adventure without them.
Harry Bauer has a meeting in Washington DC with his boss and another highly influential individual, a supporter of COBRA who Harry works for.He eliminates bad people who have no morals, no hearts. No souls. In Peru in the home of the Inca civilization a dig site has been established and valuable artifacts are being removed. It's also a cover for a powerful narcotic the Inca priests gave people prior to their sacrifice to their gods. Powerful people are profiting from this. Other natural resources such as gold is also being mined. The biggest profit is being made from the mysterious narcotic potion.Harry shuts down the operation and eliminates all of the key players. Don't mess with Harry. Extremely fast paced action thriller!! Enjoyed immensely!!
The writing style of Blake Banner is gripping, I haven't encountered any other series that I read cover to cover in one sitting since reading the Jack Reacher series by Lee Child. I would recommend this book to anyone considering reading, the story is fast-paced, fun, thought-invoking (regarding the Pharmaceutical industry and Military Industrial complex) without the book seeming to have an agenda or to pigeonhole the characters into any polarized ideology.
Excellent work, and eagerly anticipating the next release.
This time Harry is traveling to Peru and his new mission involves mystery from Inca civilization, the artefacts found in the ruins and the terrifying history behind it. People are committing suicide and the blame is on legends of Inca mythology. While the author did a good job in crafting a suspenseful story, the idea that the author insinuated is of a typical westerner - that all pre-Christ civilizations were superstitious
"The Shadow of Ukupacha" is another great read by an excellent author, Blake Banner. The story is woven around Incan myth, legend & its amazing architecture. There's a dig at Incan ruins led by a gorgeous professor, Dr. Liz Calder. She believes she has found evidence that will stun the world of architecture. In the jungle below the dig another drop-dead gorgeous doctor is looking for plants to cure all disease. Harry finds himself in the Andes of Peru investigating the death of a young archeologist from Calder's team. He is followed by assassins from the start, the question is why? Harry eventually sends many evil doers to the Incan underworld.
Another Blake Banner winner. As usual Banner doesn't let us down. As Harry Bauer heads into the world of archeologists and the Incas the intrigue starts there. So many great characters are brought into this world and what makes them tick. Is it money, love, fame, fortunes or all the above. Harry takes us on a trip to find out, as the body count keeps stacking up. Definitely a page turner you can't put down
Another great read - good old Harry Bauer making lots of friends with bad people and having meaningful discussions with them regarding their future. Sadly, for them, it was rather short lived. A big thank you to the author Blake Banner and I very much look forward to the next book - a well deserved 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Another great reading session! I enjoyed this book a lot. I greatly like archeology. I've read about but never had the privilege of being involved. I'm sure that our idea of what death looks and feels like is nothing compared to the torture involved. God, please allow me never to be witness to it!
To be able to create such an incredible story that has you unable to put it down, even when your eyes are tired, is such an incredible talent. Thanks so much, I love this character, and what he represents. If we had systems like this in place, this world would be a better place.
Excellent book. I read it straight through in one day. Good, tight plot. Perhaps a bit more bloody than some ear!her books, but that is not as bothersome if I were watching it via a movie. And Harry Bauer's personality and character continue to evolve and develop...
Some other reviewer said that Mr Banner is a gifted writer and I agree. I have read all his books, this book is no exception - fast-paced, taut, and a wonderful yarn.
Can't get enough of Harry Bauer. Write faster Blake, can't wait for book 11. His writing style is consistent in this series.. yet each book has its own uniqueness...and his characters flawless.
I do very much enjoy following the exploits of Harry Bauer.
This was an exciting read. I finished it in just two days of part time reading. Now I'm left with out a Harry Bauer story to read. I think I've now read them all. Pity.
This was a good one, like the first three or four. Peru is an interesting country. The high altitude at Cusco is very debilitating for many. And the cuisine in Lima is second to none.
In my personal. Jew (couldn’t be anyone else’s could it) this is about the worse book in the entire series. Base, unbelievable to the point where I was skipping so many pages I read the last 100 in about 5 minutes. Don’t bother
All my little niggles with the previous volumes are gone from this well-paced tale of good versus evil so this is the best yet. The length is just right and the characters are all well rounded; though Mr Banner seems to have a disdain for the French!
Great characters and having read a number of Blake Banner books I searched and came to the same conclusion Harry methodically found. I'm just surprised Harry Bauer is not as famous as Jason Bourne.
This book is entertaining from the very beginning. The characters and story are believable. This might be my favorite read of Banner’s book that I’ve read.
Liked the fast beginning and interesting story line. Interesting information. Totally different from his other books but very suspenseful. I like over-the-top characters.
Fast moving, believable storyline interspersed with interesting historical facts (maybe facts?) hard to put down, need the powder to stay awake to finish the book in one sitting.
Great read with an almost great tale that could be true. One did not know all the players .
Great setting, plenty player.Lots of action, but rather bloody even for Harry..Some readers might not enjoy due to the number and the methods of those killed .VERY GORY.
This is the end for me. The writing is descriptive for descriptive sake. Waaay too boring to be an action Novel. Not enough intrigue to be a mystery. Just a diarrhea deluge of words slammed against a page. Adios.
Loved the description of the remote country. Hard to get over the sudden violence that Harry brings to so many situations. He does seem to be getting in touch with his feeling a little more in each book.
After reading the first several books, finally there is one with an interesting story line. As I’ve said before, l like his writing but the character is just to out there for me. But once again, this was an interesting srory line. Good job Blake!
Loved it, great adventure, twisty turny plot, full of description. Edge of your seat ride with Harry Bauer. Anyone who likes Jack Reacher, Sam Pope or many other fictional thriller heroes is really going to enjoy this whole series. Loving it, highly recommended.
Blake Banner must have a brilliant mind, or a lot of researches for his book. So much detail goes into each book, and this one surprised me, Harry never got injured for a change. A must read.
