Heaven's Dark Soldiers #2

Wrath of the Fallen

Rate this book
The giants have risen. And the Devil’s in the details. Dean Robinson is having a bad day. Like a really bad day. And for the last member of a clandestine group of semi-divine super soldiers blessed and cursed with the wrath of God — bad days have a certain apocalyptic flare to them. How bad exactly? Well, he already failed to stop the prophesied resurgence of the Nephilim giants. Now, Dean and his otherworldly cohorts from the Seventh Realm must watch in horror as their mammoth adversaries wreak unprecedented mayhem on the world around them. His mission is impossible, riddled with mind warping beasties, overzealous celestial uber beings, surreal bounty hunters, and no shortage of unnatural drinking establishments. As Dean races to find the one thing that can stop the coming apocalypse, he learns that the answer to saving the future is, in fact, lurking in the past. Of course it is…

Creative, exciting, and entertaining

Very rarely do I find myself this excited to finish a book and continue the series. Normally it's just a simple ahh yes that was fine let's check out the next one. With this series, it's hurry up, read and enjoy, and move on to the next one. I absolutely loved this book. Book 1 was great, but Book 2 is even better. Dean, Rooster, Coop, and the rest of the group are back and even better and more funny than before. Crazy angels, bounty hunters, the devil, and a time traveling millennial make this book an absolute blast. Lew is sneaky and cunning, perfectly portraying what the devil is like. Dean is still learning about his role in cosmic events. Owen, while a super annoying drunk millennial, is hilarious and a great addition to the team. His fourth wall breaking Easter egg references had me laughing my butt off. The final third of the book is a knock down drag out no holds barred war of epic scale. I cannot wait to see what happens in Book 3. This series is an absolute hit in my book

Book #2 in the series isn't as good as book #1, which is a little disappointing. It's still worthy though: 3 bill-stars.

I like the writing style, the characters, the setup, and all, but there's a ton of repetition and very little has changed from the first book. The plot is a lot slower. Another ding: The ending is a serial, "to be continued" ending, and I sure don't like that. This isn't Lord of the Rings. We should get a real ending in each book.

QOTD

“And for the record, Doc isn’t my girlfriend. It’s complicated.”

“Who is she then?”

“No one really. Combat medic. Cardiothoracic surgeon. Pint-sized badass. Jaw dropping minx. Red Sox fan. Good with pets. And she pours a mean black and tan.”

“She’s totally your girlfriend.”

- girl problems for 7th deacon Dean Robinson

I'm not sure if I'll read book #3. I'll probably take a break, and then we'll see.

A good read. thanks...yow, bill

1st, an editor. 2nd, kinda feel jerked around

Pretty much liked the 1st in the series. Enough to try the 2nd. There's the bit at the start, before the "23 hrs later" which misleads. We've already been introduced to the workings of the universe. Except in this book when the move becomes "weeell...it's actually this way....wait, not that way either." A middle section where Dean works on getting a person to help. I skimmed 50 pages, focused down again...still trying. The series proceeds episodically----build up to the battle, battle, fall out. Only to reach the closing act where I found myself exasperated, "all that, to reach this point?" What purpose served in the larger narrative? A vehicle for a quippy snarky sentences? I'm ok with that sort of humor, but not for it's own sake. Needs to be in the service of the other narrative components. 1st book in the series it works. Is this book overall long by maybe half? Yes. Yes, it is.

These stories get better and better. OMG I love the side characters lol. double OT Owen and Rooster and well all of them. These books are great add in the Audio they are fantastic. The narrator Jeremy is the cherry on top. He makes these books Awesome.
And I am glad the Rooster part worked out or I may have had to stop reading 🤣. I am constantly laughing. I think if you are to young to get the jokes and references you may not enjoy them as much. But I love them. They are in the past obviously. You get all kinds of sayings and movie references from anywhere from 70's 80's 90's. and more. It's a great ride. I am already on the third. And definitely looking at the narrator's other works. he is just so good

PLENTY OF WRATH. BUT WHY?

Book 1 was entertaining enough to get me into the second one but, enough is enough. The generation of puns way overpowered the story line and the character development. Lost track of The plot with the continued introduction of new, almost recognizable characters with colloquialisms my father used. ( I'm 70) . I forced my way through all of the book because I don't abandon an author with something to say. My mistake.
This is a paramilitary fantasy genre which is not my thing. I appreciate the author's knowledge and research in mythology.

If you enjoyed Book 1 in this series, you will REALLY enjoy Book 2! The current characters develop more into their own personalities (quirks, flaws, and all), and there a few new characters we meet who add even more depth to the storyline. The humor and wit are just as epic and the storyline reels us in with even more fervor. This story in the series “Heaven’s Dark Soldiers” deepens the seed of intrigue that Steve Gilmore plants in book one. Keep ‘em coming Steve!

Getting weird. I like that in a book.

I'm liking the series to this point. The interplay of the soldiers is true to form, great banter of the brother hood. I'm going to jump right into book 3, it sounds like a cool ride. It feels like end of days is everywhere now a days, I'm currently doing a 12 week study in my mens group. Next week I'm going to suggest these books as a humorous take of armageddon. Good times!

This is awesome!

Dean and company are awesome!
Talk about the fight between good and evil? Each time I think I know who the barcangel is I get smacked down with another twist to the plot! And now Stephen has been snatched and added to Azezal’s collection, giving the traitor untold power.
The Watchers have been released and war has reached the Tenth Realm. Who will stand in the way of the apocalypse? Dean and company of course!!! I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Wrath of the Fallen
By Steve Gilmore
This is book #2 in the series. The war between good and bad, heaven and hell, and the twists and turns are many! There's traitors and those comprised, it is hard to know who to trust.
Tons of action, interesting new characters, friendly old characters, time travel, exciting situations, great plot, and even more humor and wit than book one! Funny dialogue is scattered throughout!
Certainly going to get the next book! I'm hooked!

Great story, great characters

Great stories, great characters, pretty funny all the way through. Minor complaint that cost a star - fourth-wall breaks are great in limited capacities and one particular character has a tendency to do them a little too much, which kinda throws the whole vibe of the story off. Otherwise, killer book and series so far.

I really enjoyed this one. I like the humor and the author tells a good story and doesn’t take it too seriously. I have a couple complaints. He reuses the same words a lot. Enigmatic. Grumbled. A couple others that don’t come to mind immediately. I also didn’t like that he broke the fourth wall. That happened a few times. Otherwise it was very enjoyable. 4 1/2 well deserved stars.

I think this series is just okay I enjoy it and will likely continue I enjoy the use of the book or Enoc for the premise. It was just portrayed as more like dresden files but it is not really. Anyway it is fine and one where I want to finish what I started.

Interesting story about a warrior becoming a holy warrior to do battle in the physical and metaphysical world. I liked it enough to continue the series.
