I received a review copy from the author at my request and this is my honest opinion. What a roller-coaster read this book is. And just like your favorite roller-coaster, it is a bit slow at the beginning as it lays the foundation and builds the suspense for the ride. Then it reaches the top of the first hill and you better hold onto your hat because it is an all-out wild ride from there!
Having read the first two books in the series I was very familiar with Lizzie and Adams and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with them again. I love watching their relationship slowly and steadily build. It is not perfect and has its bumps and bruises but appears solid so far.
As a retired nurse, I always approach a medical novel with a bit of trepidation because sometimes authors, like tv directors, go for the drama and not the accuracy. I have to say Mr. Burrows has yet to make a major error. Some things are different since my career was in the US and Lizzie and Adams are in the UK, but otherwise, the details are right.
Mr. Burrows has the ability to create excellent characters be they "good guys" or "bad". His characters are down-to-earth, relatable, and authentic. And his "bad guys" are so bad that I felt my blood pressure rise on more than one occasion. The dialogue is natural sounding and flows easily and the military details feel right (no military experience here so I can't be positive).
All in all, this is an excellent read and one that provides plenty of suspense, twists and twists at every corner, and all kinds of excitement. This is one of those "just one more chapter" books that you find yourself reading long after you should have been in bed. I highly recommend it and the previous two books in the series.
