I’ve always been deeply moved by Mishima’s writing, and The Temple of the Golden Pavilion is no exception. His poetic prose resonates with me, and Chen’s translation captures its nuance and depth with remarkable accuracy.
So far, every one of Mishima’s works I’ve read has left a lasting impression. I find myself connecting with his words and thoughts on a profound level. In this novel in particular, I was captivated by his exploration of beauty and how it's perceived, idealized, and ultimately corrupted. His imaginative reconstruction of the psychological motivations behind a real historical event is both haunting and compelling.
I could understand why the narrator sees the Golden Pavilion as the most beautiful thing in existence. However, I struggled to grasp the necessity behind its destruction. The act seems rooted in a deep, conflicted hatred toward humanity, a desire to erase something manmade and "too beautiful" to exist. This mixture of reverence and resentment was difficult for me to fully comprehend.
There’s so much to unpack in this novel, and I know I’ll return to it in the future.
