Kyousuke Motomi (最富キョウスケ Motomi Kyōsuke) is a Japanese mangaka whose stories have frequently been published in the monthly Betsucomi magazine. She is most currently working on Dengeki Daisy.
She uses a male pseudonym and draws herself as a man, but she's actually female."If my stories can touch you, make you laugh, forget unhappy things, or even give you that 'good job' feeling, then I'll be super, super happy!" - Kyousuke Motomi
Literally one of the best mangas I've ever read. Better than Fruits Basket, Ouran High School Host Club, MUCH better than Death Note...honestly, it's even better than...wait for it....Soul Eater.
Yeah, I know, it's that good. It's all about animals, which I loved, and Leo is insanely adorable. I MUST BUY THIS! I really hate the cover though, I'm so sick of misleading covers. My parents will see this and think "WTF are you reading?!" And really, I think my mom would like it. Hell, I think I'll even suggest it to her.
It says 'Teen+ for OLDER TEEN' on the back, but again, that's misleading. I'd say this book is okay for 12+. No cussing, no nudity, (Leo did have his shirt off once though), and not even that much blood. HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!!
This is going to be more of a tribute than a review, so those who are into skinning puppies recreationally, exit right.
My parents tell me that I had always been an anti-social child. Definitely not the variety who'd hiss at other kids in the playground and scratch them, but I never got along well with children my age. For some reason, they didn't like me very much. And on top of that, dad worked for the government, so we moved around a lot and I could never forge a long lasting friendship with anyone.
Please don't get me wrong, I am not complaining, nor am I bitter about it; not in the slightest. In fact, I consider my childhood to be absolutely fucking awesomesauce. Because it gave me the two greatest loves of my life- books and animals.
Anyone who knows me closely knows that I adore animals. And ever since I can remember, our house was always home to critters we found abandoned/adopted.
My first pet(s) was an adorable fleet of stray dogs who made a permanent residence in our front yard when we lived in West Bengal.
I also owned a pair of Angora rabbits who procreated at an astronomical rate. I had a little army of cuddly bunnies to play with! :")
This is Bunny the rabbit. (I have never claimed to be the most creative kid on the block.)
And then, we rescued a kitteh from the roadside.
Later, we moved to Bihar where my uncle's Pomeranian, Sniffer forcibly thrust his company upon us so we had to adopt him (I was thrilled, by the way). Unfortunately, he was a horndog (literally) and ran after a bitch never to be seen again.
Then we adopted Simba who was the fluffiest German Shepherd puppy ever to grace the face of earth.
Shit eating smiles all around. One of the happiest days of my life, hands down.
In the meantime, we also rescued a baby squirrel, a baby crow, a kingfisher chick, sparrow(s?), a hen, pigeons, and a hawk. Oh and we got a parrot, too.
This is Tweety the squirrel because she used to tweet tweet. -.-
I look like a knobby boi in drag. =__=
A few months short of his fifth birthday, we lost Simba due to some complications in his kidneys.
And then came Vivo. Who is an asshole.
He thinks I am his personal handmaiden.
He also thinks that he is Batman of the dog world.
This is his best friend Tuffy the Pekingese.
Vivo forced him to be his best friend.
This is Vivo's girlfriend Missy the Lhasa Apso. I think they make an adorable pair.
Also, random pictures of Vie. (Honestly, my phone has more pictures of him than mine)
When Vie and I went to the park.
This one time when we were home alone and the best friend came over.
He looks like a blonde fluffy burrito OM NOM NOM.
Mum knit him this sweater; I swear everyone at home adores him. Even the extended family.
From Holi last year.
Their bromance is a stuff of legends.
When I went out with ze friends early this month and spotted sleepy puppies!
This manga is about a girl who loves animals but they seem to hate her for some reason. And then she meets a boy who gets along with animals really, really well. But he has been raised in the wild and has violent fits whenever he sees blood! Stuff happens blah la la but that's not the point. Like many other mangas, Beast Master is character driven and that is where its beauty truly lies. Both Leo and Yuiko were adorable and so careful with each other that watching them made my heart burst with happiness. Also, is it just me or does Leo look like a gothic, wilder version of L from Death Note? *___*
I just realised that Dengeki Daisy is also written by the same mangaka and I am so excited to read it! Give this a go if you love animals and cute couples who fiercely care for each other. Meanwhile, I'd go and give Vivo a cuddle.
Contrary to the bondage-y looking cover, this is a pretty innocent story. The relationship is very like that of a cat to a person, with only hints of sexual or romantic attraction to come later. Likewise, the mysterious background is not explored, although it is implied that one of his parents is a shape-shifter or other supernatural creature.
The cover does not serve this manga! I mean, it looks kind of explisite, though it's a perfectly innocent story about a girl who likes animals and a boy who behaves like one. Actually, she even treats him like a pet! However, the romance was really nice and cute and the characters were adorable!!
This is unexpected adorable!! The art style is kind of outdated; it has one of those shoujo classic art, that is tolerable enough but the story really kept me going!! This is so sweet and I'm in love with it!!
Cute and funny! I loved the main lead, Yuiko. She is kind and brave. She loves animals. And Leo, he is really sweet guy and funny, even though he has dangerous looking eyes as he has grown up in nature, like Mouqli. He has some animal instincts too. No wonder, Yuiko was interested in him.
Despite the cliches, the whole story was simple and heartwarming. The mutual kindness and closeness between Yuiko and Leo felt so geniue and cute. It really made me feel better in general. I was smiling the whole way. Too bad that it is only two volumes long.
Yuiko loves animals so much she terrifies them when she glomps them. Her friends advise her to be more agressive towards men in order to land a boyfriend-but what will she do when the new transfer student is the very one who she encountered bleeding in the rain, clutching a cat?
Leo, the new guy, has scary eyes and goes beserk at the sight of blood. No, he's not a vampire. Due to reasons, he grew up in the wild with his caretaker, Toki. The trauma of surviving forces him into a "kill or be killed" mentality the moment he sees blood. Because of this, everyone's terrified of Leo.
But Yuiko sees how gentle he is towards animals and after talking to him, realizes he's just a big softy who just wants a friend.
I liked how the love interest wasn't a rude jerk for once. Leo was adorable and went through rough times but he still is kind towards others. Yuiko and him immediately click and it's because of her compassion that Leo adores her. He's afraid she'll leave him alone when she realizes he's too much to handle.
Yet she proves that everyone has a beast of their own. It's only when we have something to protect that it comes out.
Really neat concept. A bunch of fluff and cliche tropes but is just the thing for a short read and some warm tea on a rainy day.
*I buy all the manga I read/review and don't support scans.
This was such a fun and cute read! Very relaxing and very different from what I expected based on the cover. LOL!
I throughly enjoyed Leo and Yuiko's meeting and their friendship growing. They are SO sweet and I absolutely love how they both care for one another even if Yuiko's feelings are probably note quite as deep as Leo's.
And Leo!! He is one of most sweetest male characters I've ever read! And he is SO cute to look at it! He's definitely interestingly drawn and has such a charm about him that you can't help but smile. <3
I'm really excited to keep reading this manga and see where it goes!
Yuiko loves all animals...so much so that she scares them away with the intensity of her affection. One evening, while trying to get her cat home after accidentally scaring it up a tree, she encounters a wild-eyed boy covered in blood. The next day at school she learns that he's Leo, a new transfer student in her class.
Leo is rumored to have gotten into a fight with a group of thugs and won, and everyone's scared of him. Everyone, that is, except Yuiko, who's fascinated by and jealous of the way animals trust him and easily come to him. She approaches him and quickly finds out that he's actually very gentle and sweet, if unused to living among people. Apparently he used to live on an uninhabited island.
However, Leo has a problem. Anytime he sees blood, he blacks out and turns violent - possibly a defense mechanism he developed while on the island, to help him survive against predators. When Yuiko witnesses one such incident, she learns that she can do something no one else has been able to do: tame the beast inside Leo and get him to calm down.
This wasn't a bad volume, although some of the over-the-top details were a bit much for my current mood - things like the stupid blowgun, the repeated appearances by "Boss", the tough-looking softie, and the as yet unexplained detail about Leo having a Japanese-German mercenary as his guardian. Yuiko also drove me a little nuts - she demonstrated that she knew how to coax animals to her but would then screw everything by grabbing the animals and trying to cuddle them like a little kid who hadn't been properly taught how to treat other living beings.
I'm not all that wild about the premise. Leo is a gentle guy, except when he sees blood, at which time he turns into a scary killer who may once have ripped a leopard's throat out during one of his blackouts. And of course Yuiko turns out to be the only person in existence who's ever been able to calm him down with her presence and voice alone. The first time she tries, though, she doesn't manage it until after Leo has bitten her hard enough to draw blood.
There's a bit at the beginning of the volume that irked me: Yuiko's classmates, and even Yuiko herself (that bugged me the most), think it's strange that Yuiko is 17 and is more interested in cuddling animals than chasing after boys. People were literally telling her to stop wasting her time with animals, and I had to grit my teeth.
Throughout most of the volume Leo and Yuiko's relationship is more sweet and platonic than anything. Leo comes across almost like a child. Then things shifted a bit at the very end, and suddenly Yuiko thinks Leo has "a faint manly scent that I hadn't noticed before," and ugh. Really?
I wasn't originally planning on continuing on, but as I was doing a little research prior to writing this review, I noticed that the series is only two volumes long. It feels weird quitting when I'm technically halfway through, so I might see about getting volume 2 from the library at some point.
Extras:
An extra unrelated short manga called "Fly" from early in the author's career. It's about a girl named Yui who's struggling because she wants to become a pilot even though her family expects her to go to medical school. She's convinced that if she sees a rainbow again before she graduates, her dream will come true, and her best friend Arata supports her. The story is pretty weak, although not as bad as the author's embarrassed one-page introduction led me to expect.
I had to get this book after reading about it in a review. It had echoes of Loveless, Volume 1 what with a character named Yuiko and the whole chain imagery. The other main character, Leo, looked a lot like L from Death Note, Volume 1: Boredom.
Yuiko is a ditzy girl who loves animals and is undeterred by the fact that animals don't seem to like her very much. One day, as she's rescuing / getting mauled by a cat who runs up a tree to escape her, she meets Leo, a wild boy covered in blood, who is up in the tree and who calms the cat. The next day at school, she meets a new student - Leo - who everyone thinks is weird and scary. Some thugs are out to beat Leo up, and Leo goes wild at the sight of blood, but Yuiko calms him down. Leo takes a liking to Yuiko, who is the only student who has shown him kindness. The other students begin to call her "Beast Master."
Although this series is rated T+, there wasn't too much to worry about here. It's a cute romance, and the chain imagery on the cover doesn't come into play in the story. There is a bit of violence but nothing really sexually suggestive at all. Leo might act like a wild animal, but when Yuiko comforts him, he falls asleep on her. There are a lot of fun asides.
The short story at the end of this volume is unrelated to Beast Master and the artist included it because she thought it was so terrible that it might be amusing the reader. I would suggest skipping it.
YAAAAAAAASSSS! This is the cutest!!!! Leo is too cute to be true! Leo and Yuiko! OTP!!!!!!!!!! 5 stars! The art style was not fantastic, simple yet cute!!! Awesome!
If you need something quick and sweet to put you in a good mood then this miniseries would be it. Told from the point of view of, animal lover, Yuiko – Beast Master was one of those shoujo’s with a unique premise but with all the familiar clichés. But before I tell you what I enjoyed about this story I must say I never would have given it a shot if didn’t already love Motomi Kyoususke’s current series Dengeki Daisy but because I do I did give Beast Master a try and am sorry I did not pick it up sooner.
The story begins with our heroine Yuiko trying to coax a cat to come to her, her neighbor’s cat who likes to go out and because Yuiko loves animals so much she doesn’t mind. Well she may not mind but the animals do. After Yuiko gets the cat in her arms and nearly crushes it with her affection he escapes up a tree after clawing her face, this is when Yuiko sees a guy in the tree. The next day Yuiko finds out the guy is a new student in her class and his name is Leo. Leo seems very serious and scary to the other students in the school but Yuiko who recognizes him as the guy who got the cat down from the tree the other day goes up to him and thanks him and we find out Leo isn’t scary at all. He’s actually quite adorable and sort of like an animal himself.
I loved both characters in this story, Yuiko is funny and brave despite getting herself into typical damsel in distress situations and Leo was a cross between cute and smexy but mostly just cute. I couldn’t fully believe that because he grew up in the wild all his life that he would act more animal than human because he isn’t Mowgli he was actually raised by his father and guardian Toka-san but I let it slide because hey this isn’t a series that should be taken seriously but even if it’s not to be taken seriously Beast Master could have been great if the plot was just fleshed out a bit more.
Still the story was an interesting and fun read this mangaka knows how to keep her readers laughing and awing and her males stands out in the sea of bishounen that seem to plague this genre.
I have a few shorter series that I like to read over and over -- this is one of them. A short story about Yuiko who uninterested in boys - loves animals instead - but animals seem to HATE, and the new "beast-like" male transfer-student that everyone's afraid of: Rei Aoi.
...you see where this is going...
When Rei Aoi is scared or sees blood his hair turns white, he loses control, and becomes a wild-beast beating-up his aggressors. He's lived away from civilization on an uninhabited Island, in Africa, and other places. This was his father's and guardians' way to protect him from his family as when he turns 18 he will be the sole inheritor of his grandfathers' 12 billion yen fortune.
Yuiko quickly realizes that he isn't scary -- he's just nervous, and not used to being out in society. They form a quick and solid bond...
The series is short -- but very satisfying. The romance is sweet and the premise is fun, without having to drag on and pull out every shoujo plot-device in existence.
I will say though that Kyousuke-san REALLY should have rethought the drawing of the father. For every other adult the drawing was fine -- but her reveal of the father seemed like a joke. Every time I read it I cringe when I see his face. He is a very very odd drawing. And even now I can't quite decide what it is about it that is off-putting.... the "Jesus Hair" maybe??? ...or his head is smaller than his body... I can't decide. But, it's WRONG!
Anyways, I like this one. I read it often. I recommend it.

Story 4,6/5 Zeichenstil 4,6/5 Charaktere 5+/5 Gesamt 5+/5
so i am taking part in the nostalgiathon this upcoming week, and basically i am reading and rereading a lot of children's book and stories from when i was really young.
beast master is the first shoujo that i have ever read in my life and the thing that got me into reading manga at all. of course, it has its extreme points, but it's sweet and it makes me feel very nostalgic, so it totally fulfills its purpose hahah.
i'm also not going to rate it, because i feel like my rating would be too tinted by my memories and its influence on me, and thus too biased.
Agree with some of the reviewers. Cover is totally misleading. This isn't a dark manga. It's a sweet, light and funny read. I've read it so many times and still love re-reading it again.
Ferale però solo all'apparenza. Il risultato finale è un racconto tenero, dolce e sopratutto molto spassoso.
Current reread to weed through my manga collection a bit - this is cute, but much too short. The manga itself is only 6 chapters and an epilogue spread across 2 volumes with two bonus stories.
Yuiko is an everyday sort of shoujo heroine - cute, well liked, a bit quirky. Leo is a cinnamon roll that looks like a psycho that goes dark when threatened. Honestly it would be worrying if Motomi wasn't at pains to say he is harmless unless threatened.
One of the cuter aspects of the manga is the "Banchou" (gang leader) who's super wholesome (neighborhood watches, takes care of strays, protects the weak...).
Overall I enjoy it, but I'm super worried that clearly mentally unwell gal like Morishita is just wandering around freely after nearly killing Yuiko twice.
A silly concept, but a fun shoujo manga with a sweet side to it.
Yuiko is a normal high school girl who loves animals. She loves them so much that she tends to smother them and chase them away out of sheer survival instinct. One day after driving a cat up a tree, she meets a strange, wild boy named Leo.
Of course, since this is manga Leo winds up in her school as a new transfer student. He's incredibly scary looking, yet gentle. Can Yuiko befriend Leo, especially when he has a bad habit of going berserk when he sees blood?
The concept is, well, dumb. Wild boy and normal girl, but wild in the sense of african tribesman wild. It's not explained in this volume, so it feels tacked on. But Leo is different from the usual shoujo male lead-he isn't a bully, cool and distant, or a threatening person by personality. He's just misunderstood due to his appearance, and constantly worried about his survival instincts kicking in and hurting people. His personality is sweet, and if anything he comes across as younger than Yuiko. It makes for a refreshing change from near-abusive guys with glasses that often pop up in this genre.
There's plenty of moe moments for the shoujo crowd in the book, too. Blanket scene, carrying scene, and the other usual ones. There's some nice comedic moments with a trio of local tough guys who prove to be a lot more helpful than you think, and you can tell Yuiko wants nothing more than a kitty or doggie of her own to hug and pet and call it george.
The art is decent, but don't go by the cover. The cover is a lot more serious than the inside of the book. Plenty of gag takes and rubberbanding abounds, and while the book can be serious at times, it never loses sight of being fun. I recommend it.
Oh my gosh. I cannot believe I almost passed this one by. When I read the title and saw the cover I was thinking that it would turn out to be really weird or just frankly, be pretty crappy. But it was highly rated on managafox and I saw it was only two books so I figured I would have nothing to lose. So this review is going to be for both of them! Alrightyyy?
Let me just say, that any prejudices that you have towards the book are probably horribly wrong. No seriously. You just need to read it to find out.
The comedy is fantastic. I laughed so hard and so loud at so many things that my aunt had to come shut my bedroom door since it was disturbing the peace xD
And it was so sweet. Definitely one of the cutest mangas I've ever read. You'll find yourself loving all of the quirky characters and how they react to each other.
Not just that, there are actually a lot of good life lessons in here like, giving people second chances and to not "judge a book by it's cover" (I actually kind of find this one pretty ironic since it was pretty much the main theme of the whole book and yet, I almost did exactly that when I first took a look at it xD I think i've learned my lesson though :)
Please please please just give it a chance. Even though it's short, it has a great story (as well as some fantastic and very touching extra stories) and I feel that it wrapped up really well and left me very satisfied ^-^
So stop reading reviews! Go read it right NOW!
Awh crap... now it I'll have to save up some money to buy my own copies....
