A graduate of Vanderbilt University School of Nursing Nurse-Midwifery and Family Nurse Practitioner program. Dani incorporates the art of medicine by balancing traditional and integrative therapies. Dani encourages her patients to step out of the realm of “normal” and reach “optimal” health. Dani was diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome in 1985. She struggled with chronic itching of her arms and legs for several years, diagnosed with lupus in her early 30’s and then not surprisingly prescribed psych medications to manage her emotions. Not once, was she ever told “your diet controls your pain” or asked, “what are you're eating” by the 10 specialists she saw over 24 years. She continued eating a Standard American Diet as her symptoms progressed, and prescriptions to treat the symptoms of her conditions increased as well. It wasn’t until she began practicing Integrative Medicine in her first job after graduating from nurse practitioner school that she was educated on the importance of healing the gut. Her story of healing is an inspiration and source of hope to her patients. Dani owns Integrative Family Medicine in Franklin, TN. She focuses on gut, autoimmune thyroid (Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis is her passion), hormone, and adrenal health with her patients. Her approach embodies a physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual process to healing. She believes that God designed our bodies to heal themselves, we simply must give our bodies what they need. She teaches her patients that we are not designed to break down in our 40’s, 50’s, 60’s or even 70’s. She stresses the importance of eating real food, as well as cleaning up the environment around us one step at a time. She is a sought-after speaker at various conferences and workshops where she leads discussions on the gut, adrenal, thyroid, hormone, and brain health. She is a single mother of two grown children and attends Brentwood Baptist Church. She loves traveling and participating in medical mission work. She runs a monthly support group for her Hashimoto’s thyroiditis patients, offers lunch and learns at her office on Fridays for the community, she has a weekly Facebook Live show on Sunday Evening’s named Sunday Night Service and addresses various health topics. She is also is the founder of a Facebook community that continues to grow monthly with members from across the world that are dedicated to healing their bodies from the INSIDE OUT. Her first book Wild & Well Dani’s 6 Commonsense Steps to Radical Healing is being released November 9, 2021. She believes that your health is not rocket science, and healing shouldn’t be as well. The information is great. Writing is a bit elementary and needed a bit more editing, but overall the information is what's important. Heads-up for everyone out there who is NOT Christian (like me), it's heavily peppered with quotes from the bible and Christian-leaning concepts. Do not let this deter you from reading. There is valuable information to be had, regardless of your religious affiliation or lack thereof. My only wish was that it could have been conveyed without the superfluous religious notes. It would have made it more enjoyable for all...not just those who subscribe to Christianity.
In this political climate, it was really difficult for me to get past the sexist, misogynistic, and very conservative religious beliefs. I would even go as far as to say the advice she gives to women, and how to treat their husbands is dangerous. And it was hard to understand why kissing your husband’s ass, or believing in the Bible has to do with nutrition?! There was solid nutrition advice in there, but for me personally I would never recommend this book to any woman. There are plenty of other well informed nutrition books out there that don’t shove their right wing conservative beliefs down your throat.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Dani has a unique perspective as she is a registered nurse practitioner who is also trained in functional medicine. It is a fantastic middle ground that recognizes the benefits of medical care and medicine, but also that it shouldn't be a first resort as our body can heal better if we find the root cause and make lifestyle changes.
Dani has dealt with her fair share of autoimmune disorders, including lupus, and it took decades for a doctor to finally ask what she was eating. This is mind boggling to me, while also resonating with my experience as well. At 20 years old, I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and IBS and prescribed 5 or 6 expensive medications and sent on my way. I was never asked about my diet. I was never asked about my childhood, I get it wasn't a psychiatrist but IBS is heavily correlated with childhood trauma. I took the medication for a rather short time because I was a newly married college student and there was no way we could afford to spend hundreds EVERY MONTH in medication for me. And to be honest, they weren't really helping. Over the past decade plus, I have been able to put many of the autoimmune disorders and anxiety disorders I have into remission when I am eating well. Every single time I backslide, I pay for it. Dani frequently says how food either heals you or kills you, and through my experience, I whole heartedly agree. With my anxiety disorders too, I have found that diet controls it many, many times better than any medication I have taken for it. Of all of her pillars, this is the most important. I have backslid over the past four or five months again, but as I have adapted Dani's eating principles again, which interestingly is exactly what I have done in the past to kick my issues into remission, it is like a switch is flipped. It is better than magic. Of course results may not be as noticeable if one doesn't suffer from these issues, but you will be thankful you helped prevent these issues from taking form. Her other steps are fantastic too, but integrate her eating principles and you should see immediate results. Some would consider it on the strict side, but it basically whole foods while cutting out ultra processed and inflammatory foods, so akin to the Mediterranean diet, but may vary somewhat depending on each person's sensitivities.
This book is approachable for both the average reader and for those of us who frequently read wellness books or studies. The writing is simple, yet informative.
Now, even though I gave it a 5 star, I do have some cons. First and foremost, the editing. Yikes. This book needed a better editor. Desperately, in my opinion. It isn't issues with the writing style itself, but rather the number of typos, extra letters accidentally tacked on, homophone confusion, missing words that make sentences confusing, and mistakes akin to those. Because these are obviously issues that the editor should have caught, I'm not faulting Dani here. But I hope she finds a new editor if she publishes another book, which I would love! 😍 Also, I don't agree with everything Dani says in the book, however, I understand different things work for different people and there is so much content in this book that is all encompassing, that I think it is a fantastic read. A good 95% of the book had me saying, "Yes, absolutely!" She is such a likeable author and you can tell she has put her heart and soul in this book and in her work.
I checked this book out from the library, but upon reading, also acquired a digital copy so that I can easily refer back to, because I certainly need the continued motivation and reminder.
This is certainly worth the read, especially if you want to take control and responsibility of your own health and/or suffer from health issues that can be improved naturally, like many autoimmune or anxiety disorders. The book definitely had an emphasis on these two, likely because they are two she has personally dealt with.
This booked opened my eyes to better health rather than being prescribed a pill for this, a pill for that. How to seek better healthier alternatives and ask questions to get to the bottom of an issue rather than putting a band aid on it. I literally chose a new medical doctor, new gym, new dentist and I may not stop there. New physician listens to me and agrees with my healthier me journey! Now off of least 14 medications! Health is improving! A MUST READ!
I enjoyed the detailed explanation this book provided. Dani gives a precise protocol to help overcome many of the autoimmune symptoms that are prevalent today. She understands the struggle to discover and recover from these diseases as she has personally dealt with several. This book will remain a good reference for now and in the future.
I ordered this book on Kindle the moment I found out it was released. INCREDIBLE. I highly recommend it. She breaks down steps for healthy living that give you the what and why and most importantly, helped me to feel more empowered over my health than I ever have before. MUST READ.
Loved this book & Dani !! Easy to follow and some very hard cold facts to take in ….So glad I heard her on a podcast !!!! Will be changing my lifestyle around ….
Awesome! If you are interested in being healthy, healing without drugs. Dani's style is refreshing and straight forward, she isn't afraid to tell it like it is. I have bought this book for a couple of friends.
I caught a bit of a segment with her on our local news at midday. Turns out, she grew up in my area! I immediately felt like she knew of the struggles I have been through these past few years. Let's just say I bought the book immediately!
