Feeling an overpowering pull she can’t explain or control, Branwynne slips out of the Emergents Academy in search of Matholook, the mysterious and charming seventeen-year-old member of the Cult of the Devoted she first met five years ago.
Heading right into the enemy camp may not seem like the most sensible thing to do, but Branwynne has never been one to blindly follow the rules—or to shy away from danger. Especially when her instincts are screaming at her that Matholook may have answers to questions she’s been searching for all her life.
Thrust into the middle of a bloody, three-way war for power in a bleak and ravaged land, Branwynne has her loyalties tested as she closes in on the mystery of who and what she really is.
What she finds may not change her life or her mind.
K. A. Riley is a writer of speculative and science fiction, dedicated to creating worlds just different enough from our own to be entertaining, intriguing and a little frightening all at once. For Riley, writing isn't a job. It's a laboratory where readers can wander into a land of ideas; it's a playground where they can scamper around, giggling, gasping, and freaking out to their hearts' content.

This installment was on par with some of the better ones in the series. It was fairly straightforward and had a lot of good action. It wasn’t confusing but did open up a lot of questions. Branwynne sneaks down to the Devoted but then helps rescue a kidnapped Emergent for them. Why did Matholook have them rescue 12 Emergents and keep this one? And what about the girl he warned the Conspiracy about during their first visit? The one that made them think the bad decision was the good one? I have a feeling that’s what this “pull” Branwynne keeps feeling is. There’s still the unanswered question of a possible inside trader. They keep talking about how the present and the past are the same and I’m sure it’s no coincidence that all the names from the Welsh story are the same, and somehow that history is repeating itself. In other words, we have multiple themes and plots trying to become one story. It’s a lot to try and keep track of. I will give Riley credit: she knows how to add in an adjacent storyline to bring in more action and more characters. And there are a lot of characters. I appreciate that this book left off on a cliffhanger of sorts and I’m looking forward to the final segment of this trilogy.
I love how this series can go so many ways and I love that im reading brans version even tho I love Kress... im not really good with reviews lol but I always give these 5 stars
Sooo much EXCITEMENT in this one!!:-). We are getting to know SOOOO MUCH more about the new emergents in the Emergents Academy & we learn more about the secrets of everything!!!:-). LOVED IT!!!:-)
Nothing really happened in this book but it wasn’t like I disliked it. It was just boring. It was better then the first tho. The timeline was dumb tho. A book that takes place over TWO days… come on now.
This book, and series has been fun, interesting and entertaining to read. Kress, and her conspiracy, as well as Brawnwyne with her white Raven keeps me reading!
