Spectacular Stories for Curious Kids By Jesse Sullivan
This has so many crazy but true stories that kids, and adults, will love. There is a story about an army on horseback that rides up to a fleet of ships in the water and surprises them! A must read to find out that secret. Lots of stories that will having you grossed out knowing what they did in the past for health! Interesting history on how we obtained certain things today. The only story that is presented as the typical myth version is Rasputin. I know because I just finished reading a book on him and the myths surrounding him. Other than that it is a fun book.
Fantastic book full of quirky stories for curious people! I really enjoyed reading this aloud to my children, and we loved that there were stories for everyone in every genre. Spooky, history-based, geographical, interesting animal tales, and more! As an adult, I loved the short stories to intrigue my kids and I, and then we often looked up pictures or more info to quench our intrigue. It took us forever to get through this book, but not because the book was lacking in any way. I loved that we could read just a couple of stories without committing too much time, though often, we were so intrigued by the next title that we'd read on! A great read for readers who enjoy learning new things about just about anything!
Great for curious adults, too! Short, easy to read chapters that inform and entertain. The author does a nice job not talking down to his audience, but keeping things clear.
This book was so fun to read. I found out things I've never known, and they're ALL TRUE!. I was constantly putting in book marks on ones I thought were really fun or extra interesting. All the stories were only about 2 or so pages so I could stop and start through out the book. I tell some of the stories to my grandchildren and adults. One of the stories answers the question of where they came up with the name Teddy Bear, which was funny as we (grandchildren and i) had just been trying to figure it out. There is mentioned in some other reviews that it was not appropriate for younger children (8 or so). There were several stories that might upset some children that are those ages or under. They would be things that might cause them to worry or get frightened. My suggestion is to read it first, then read it to the children excluding those stories. There are so many other great stories they will love and they all are great to discuss. No matter the age I love to read to others and they love to listen to me read. Enjoy.
A compilation of 2-4 page short stories about strange or amazing historical people & events. I read a couple stories with my kids each night in addition to a different book. I think it would be difficult to read it straight through- they get a bit tedious and lose their shock value. Many of the stories are really interesting, sometimes funny, sometimes gross. Several of the stories are dull and boring. It's hit and miss. The worst part, though, is the writing. It's terrible. I know it's aimed at kids, but the sentence structure is labored and sometimes difficult to read out loud and the author often repeats himself within just a couple paragraphs. It's irritating. In summation, this would be a good book to pick some of the stories to read with kids on a periodic basis. I could see this being a quick and fun read aloud for teachers short on time that want to entertain kids with tidbits from history.
This author knows how to write for a middle grade reader, but it is still a very enjoyable book for any age. The chapter titles grab your attention including “I Was Whale Food” and “Excuse Me, Have You Seen Any Vampires?” I learned a lot from this book and found it really enjoyable. The short and engaging chapters make it a compelling read for any age. The book covers more notable historical events and people, as well as figures and events you might not read about anywhere else. The story on the ‘country’ of Sealand was one that I don’t think I would learn about anywhere else. However, because each story was short, it did feel like the book dragged on sometimes. I would recommend this book to middle grade readers, but I think anyone could learn something from and enjoy this book! Thank you Book Sirens for providing me with a copy of this book!
The author has a way with words. Sullivan has succeeded in telling 100 stories about history, science, art, and culture and with wit and charm. Young readers will be intrigued by topics like ghosts, curses, snakes, space, and vampires. Each story reveals an adventure and interesting facts. Black and white illustrations accompany many of the chapters. Young readers unwittingly learn a lot while they are laughing and having a great time reading.
This is a book they will want to share with friends and family. Targeting the middle-grade audience ages nine through fourteen, but any age reader will enjoy and appreciate these gems.
An amazing array of stories about people from all ages and walks of life. I can't wait to share it with my students. There will be names they know, those they don't, stories to learn from, stories to strive to, stories for fun and those that will make them wonder!
I love this book!
Some of the story titles are: The Most Powerful Man the the World. . . Defeated by Rabbits? A Dead Mouse Keeps the Dentist Away Selling Seashore Shells Flying Sausages Just a Kid It's Space Metal, Dude
Filled with really interesting stories about historic greats but written to keep children’s attention. Enjoyable. From Einstein to Picasso and back again this book is filled with great stories that made history. Good stories are good stories. I read it and learned a few things I did not know. Very informative.
Very interesting historical stories. I expected it to be too kiddish and not interesting but all of the stories have lots of information and are very very interesting.
Fun book that brings obscure stories of famous and lesser known people to the surface. These stories and facts will enlighten, thrill, and amuse.
Short tales packed with a lot of punch. If you like to read or a part time reader this is for you. Formatted so you can put down and pick up at you leisure while not missing any of the interesting tales.
