Supergirl sets her sights on the Brigands, a group of dastardly nomads hell-bent on slaughtering all they come across. Nowshe must follow their path of destruction to find the fugitive they've been hiding who set her on this intergalactic journey in the first place!
Melancholic, reflective, and visceral. The fourth issue is noticeably faster-paced than the previous ones and continues to deliver a piercingly emotional narrative. While several scenes are genuinely heartbreaking, the issue ultimately feels more like an interlude—a bridge to a more exciting chapter—and is less propulsive in its plot development. Pretty much nothing happens here but still likeable.
I believed she lived her life in pain. If you were to ask her, I have little doubt she would have claimed that such an assertion was absurd. She would say she felt fine and well and then she’d ask you if you needed any help.
"What is not understood about the daughter of Krypton is that her power was not one of action but one of restraint, endurance, and passion. She held back her heat vision to look you in the face. She warmed her breath to converse with you. She slowed herself to walk by your side. Every moment of every day, she suppressed the forces churning inside her.
I believe this effort hurt her. I believe she lived in pain."
there are two pages where kara helps a lone gravedigger dig plots for an entire people who have been massacred. made me weep.
especially after seeing the superman movie and reading this, i am struck by the difference in the superman slogan (truth, justice and the american way) and the supergirl slogan (hope, help, and compassion for all).
and most of all i’ve been thinking about this poem by José Emilio Pacheco:
I don’t love my country. Her abstract glory eludes me. But (this may sound bad) I would give my life for ten of her places, for certain people, ports, pine forests, fortresses, for a ruined city, gray and monstrous, for several of her historical figures, for mountains (and three or four rivers).
HOW THE HECK DID IT TAKE ME 4 ISSUES TO REALIZE THIS WAS A WESTERN (the caps is me yelling).
The beauty about comics vs movies or a book is that you pick the accent of the characters and whatever you choose affects your experience. I've read issues 1-4 with Ruthye having your stereotypical brit fantasy accent but did a re-read with the accent of an American pioneer and the experience is completely different. Also I had Melissa Benoist's voice as supergirl, but the 2nd time around I kinda changed it to that of a cowgirl outlaw
If you are at issue 4, chances are you love this series and aren't the ones who just hate Tom King for other works, so no need to sell you on this wonderful tale. So I would recommend doing a few rereads in different voices and see what you come up with
In a series of haunting vignettes, Ruthye and Supergirl visit worlds ravaged by the Brigands, doing what they can to repair the irreparable. At each stop, we get a different depiction of the wake of a destructive, evil force.
While each stop provides its own form of evidence, one works of meticulous record keepers stores footage of the holocaust — here SG protects Ruthye by bidding her not to engage with the direct records of the Brigands warpath.
While the prose narration is too purple and a little overwritten, this comic is great! I have loved Supergirl since I was a little fella, and my mental image of the character is almost entirely informed by Helen Slater's portrayal of her in the admittedly less-than-brilliant 1984 movie. Not only does the wonderful artistic rendering of Supergirl by Bilquis Evely evoke that version of the character, but I also see much of the 1970's/'80's era Supergirl that I love so much in Tom King's handling, as well. I LOVE THIS COMIC!
This series is outstanding both visually and how it is written. There was a noticeable shift here. Much fewer words, less humor and a more tense, somber, and emotionally heavy tone. The fun, road trip aspect of the women's journey has been cast aside and they are feeling the stakes of what they heading into.
“You see, what is not well understood about the daughter of Krypton is that her power was not one of action but one of restraint, endurance, and passion. She did not choose to fire a beam from her eyes, or have breath of ice, or run faster than a speeding bullet. Or any of her other well-documented miracles. No, she held back her heat vision to look you in the face. She warmed her breath to converse with you. She slowed herself to walk by your side. Every moment of every day, she suppressed the forces churning inside of her. All the energy of a dead world that strained against her many barriers, eternally demanding to be released. I believe this effort hurt her. I believe she lived her life in pain.”
Kara Zorel my dearly beloved, the strongest woman ever.
"Every moment of every day, she suppressed the forces churning inside of her. All the energy of a dead world that strained against her many barriers, eternally demanding to be released. I believe this effort hurt her. I believe she lived her life in pain. But I reiterate again, for I think it important enough to repeat-- These beliefs are based on my time at her side, watching her as she moved through strife and sorrow. If you were to have asked her, I have little doubt she would have claimed that such an assertion was absurd. She would would say she felt fine and well and then she'd ask you if you need any help."

ok nevermind i understand now Kara is doing this FOR krypto. so krypto hopefully will be okay. Ruthye and Kara continue their adventures across the stars, and it really taught me that despite Kara being rough around the edges, she’s Supergirl for a reason. she cares about life deep down and is always willing to help.

sobbing. i love her so much. i just know the film is gonna hit SO hard. ⋆。‧˚ʚ ୨ৎ ɞ˚‧。⋆
What a great issue. This story is so moving. This issue was basically a montage of Supergirl and Ruthye tracking Krem and the barbarians across multiple galaxies. It's so effective at using this montage to show you the growing bond between the girls and the respect and love they're growing for one another as well. This was a genuinely wonderful comic book.

the standout issue so far. a really sad, intense chapter that shows you glimpses of atrocities across the galaxy. kara zor-el is incredibly characterized, and we unveil the human side of supergirl here. she’s affected by the world around her, but chooses to fight, restrain, and endure. 5/5 stars.
i didn't expect somber themes in a supergirl comic but then again I haven't read many of her comics but it fits the character based on everything she's been through
