The Gardner Girls #5

How to Get Away with Marriage

Rate this book
The most wanted rogue in London…

Hugh Cavendish—mischievous rogue extraordinaire—has been declared one of the season’s most eligible bachelors. The new title does not sit well with him…nor does the news that a former flame has announced her intent to “catch” him before the season is through.

Determined to buy himself a temporary reprieve, Hugh conscripts a simple school miss into playing the role of his fiancée. What a lark!

This was not the kind of solution she had in mind...

Beatrice “Triss” Weston is a simple, practical young woman, who does not believe in putting up with nonsensical games—like the one proposed by this smooth-talking rogue. No respectable young lady would agree to such a bizarre offer, but desperate times call for desperate measures. As Triss is forced to give up her position as a teacher, accepting employ as part of Hugh’s sham becomes her only option.

Courting more than scandal…

But as Triss’s complicated past catches up with her, their ruse becomes a more shocking adventure than either of them could ever have anticipated. As Hugh’s faux fiancée’s secrets come to light, he faces a momentous decision: accept Triss for who she truly is or allow the woman he has fallen in love with to walk out of his life forever.

Author's Note:

Please note: How to Get Away with Marriage is a standalone-romance with a happy ending. However, the book concludes with a semi-cliff-hanger relating to secondary characters and which sets up the overarching mystery plot of the Must Love Scandal series.

Should I read in order?
Yes, you probably should. This was my first by Edgewood and it was fine as a stand alone for the most part – but I’ve heard these characters (or Hugh at least) have page time in past books. And as Edith was developed quite a bit here and will have her future book I’m guessing it’s a theme throughout her books to overlap those character arcs.

Basic plot:
Hugh wants an excuse to dodge a woman determined to become his wife, so he ‘hires’ Triss to be his fake fiance.

Give this a try if you want:
- post Regency (1826)
- former teacher heroine/second son of a Earl hero
- Low to mid steam – 2 scenes and kisses
- class difference feel
- fake relationship
- experienced heroine/widow heroine
- hero loves first
- rags to riches

Ages:
- Heroine is 24, hero I couldn’t find an age for but I’d guess late 20s/early 30s

My thoughts:
I’m so conflicted about this one! I really enjoyed the beginning. It was humorous and I was growing to really like the characters. Hugh, our hero, was protective and sweet, maybe a bit silly. Triss has a past she’s hiding and a lot of weight on her shoulders but I was eager to get to know her and love her too.

But, as the book went on, I never grew to love Triss. She does have a prickly exterior, and for great reason. But I wanted her to come out of it at least towards the end and show more of her true self? And I didn’t feel like I really got that. There was a lot of turmoil for her and I ended up not really feeling the romance as much as I wanted to between her and Hugh.

Edith is a side character that will apparently be getting her own story. I struggled a lot with having so much Edith time. It’s just a personal thing for me, but I only want the main characters. I felt like this was just as much Edith’s story as it was Triss and Hugh. And as I was already not sold on Triss and Hugh, I think it just took away from it a bit more from me.

I still enjoyed a lot about the story. The humor was great. The sexy scenes were great. There was some emotional pull for me. The revelations about Triss at the end tugged my heart. I would definitely try another by her (perhaps more in order next time for me).

I can’t say I loved the ending. It does end on a somewhat cliffhanger – like we know Hugh and Triss have a HEA but it just felt unfinished and a bit rushed. And we know the story will continue for our side characters in future books.

Feisty & Strong Females Unite!

This one is a perfectly paced fake engagement story full of characters to love and steam.

Without a doubt the females in this story are the stars. Triss is wonderfully vulnerable, intelligent and heartfelt as the heroine. Life has not been kind to her and she’s got her secrets but she never compromises herself or her beliefs to get what she needs.

The other females are as admirable as Triss. From younger sisters to matronly, regal aunts to new friends. They’re all unique, outspoken and willing to defend the ones they care about. Regardless of what society expects of them. Even Triss’ female adversary was so interesting because of her strength and determination to get what she wanted, namely Hugh Cavendish and Triss’ fake fiancé.

He’s swoony and sweet and a touch of goofy. He also knows exactly who his heart truly desires and that’s Triss. His open mindedness and willingness to be what Triss needed made him perfect.

There’s lots of little twists and surprises in this one. To the point where I had to slow down my reading sometimes! This is a great start to this new series and I cannot wait for the next book. Don’t hesitate, one-click this fun, intriguing fake engagement to real love story today!

I stayed pretty annoyed with the hero and heroine through almost 60% of the book. But the story was interesting enough and their actions, attitudes, and behaviors (though annoying) didn't seem out of place. In fact, this created enough tension and questions in my own mind that I found myself *eager* to understand why the heroine was making the choices she did.

All in all - a great read!

Beatrice and Hugh make a lovely couple considering their many secrets.

Triss has many secrets to tell and Hugh fake fiance could turn into a real one.

There is real trouble around the bend.

I really adored this wild and witty book. A not so perfect hero and a stoic, stressed heroine combine to create this lovely book. The hero’s family have a wonderful sense of togetherness, though communication in major family issues are lacking causing angst, but in the long run produces the HEA. This writer makes you feel you are in the room, part of the party and at times I found myself screaming at the ‘villainess’. I enjoyed this book immensely and encourage you to put it on your TBR list,

Once I started this book I couldn't put it down.

This book has a romance between very different social standings, a pretend engagement, family secrets, and of course a very jealous ex-girlfriend.

I liked watching Hugh and Triss realizing there scheme was becoming all to real as love and romance crept in. I was a bit frustrated in trying to figure out the secrets Triss was holding onto earlier in the story, but that kept me wondering and wanting to read more to find out. One of the best messages in this book is the fact that beauty only gets you do far and that soul, intelligence and substance means so much more.

OK, so the only character I really didn't like was Edith. I know she was the villain, but really didn't find any redeeming qualities in her. That made her really seem predictable. I would have liked to see a little surprise of kindness in her. That may have added a little more desire to see her in future books.

I am looking forward to more books in the series. Maybe more underdog type love stories or Edith will actually gain a heart.

This is the first book in Fenna Edgewood’s latest Historical Romance series, and I loved it! This is the story of Hugh Cavendish who we first met in the Gardner Series, so I was very excited to find out we were getting a full story for Hugh as I already loved him from the moments, we’ve seen him in before. However, this is a standalone and can be read independently to the other series.

Hugh was charming and endearing and I adored his character, he was just the dash of charismatic fun I needed! Alongside Hugh we have Miss Beatrice Weston, aka Triss, who is a school teacher and not a part of Hugh’s world at all. I loved the class differences and seeing these two connect. Triss was such a stubborn, strong and independent women which I adored though I wished she was a little less stubborn sometimes! I really enjoyed the romance and liked Triss putting High through his paces, they were a very unexpected pairing, but it worked out beautifully. I have to say the very first interactions between Triss and Hugh hooked me into the story immediately, it was so entertaining, and I adored watching the story unfold.

There were a lot of side characters that were very compelling to read, and the ending had some twists I did not expect! I am very intrigued as to what will happen to these side characters, and I can’t wait to read a book with them at the forefront.

Overall, I think this is one of my favourite books by Fenna and I cannot wait for the rest of the series to be released!

Thank you to the author and Booksprout for an ebook copy. This had no influence on my review, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Hugh Cavendish doesn’t really want to marry, but he has to… There’s an inheritance at stake! And he definitely doesn’t want to marry the mean girl who rejected his love in the past, but who’s now determined to cajole a marriage proposal from him. So what’s better than a fake engagement? And what if the fake fiancé is witty and beautiful and kind as well?
Beatrice never thought to accept charming Hugh’s absurd proposal… After all she’s an independent young woman and she has a respectable job as a teacher in a girls’ school. But when fate conspires to make her lose her job, she is forced to accept to be part of the deception… But are her budding feelings for Hugh part of the deception as well?
This was my first book from Fenna and I really loved it! She worked wonders with the fake engagement trope, creating a story who’s very different from others of this type. I particularly loved the mystery surrounding Triss and the fact that her character is hurt, broken, doesn’t trust anyone… And for a good reason! She’ll have to learn to trust again and sweet Hugh is the right hero for her. He’s lovable, kind and a little immature at the beginning, but he’s honorable and can be fiercely protective of the people he loves. A refreshing change from the stereotypical alpha male that I usually enjoy reading about.
Fenna fleshed out two wonderful main characters and a couple of very interesting side characters as well, side characters that I hope we’ll see again in future books. And of course I look forward to Edith’s story! I love a reformed mean girl!

Hugh and Beatrice . . .

Hugh Cavendish, a mischievous rogue, is under some pressure now. He has been identified as one of society’s most eligible bachelors, the ladies are vying for his attention, and his Aunt Agatha wants him to marry as he may be in line to inherit from her if he complies since he is her favorite and she had always hinted that he will get everything when she goes. So he comes up with a plan to give him a reprieve, at least for a short time. He convinces a young woman to pretend to be his fiancée.

Beatrice Weston doesn’t like playing games like this. But when she is forced to give up her teaching position at school and leave her home, she really doesn’t have any other option at the moment other than to play along with Hugh’s scheme. But Hugh is placed in danger when the many secrets of Beatrice’s past bring trouble. He may end up losing more than his heart.

I enjoyed this story, with Hugh being my favorite character. He was protective and honorable for the most part. Grab your copy and see how their story will play out.

Wow! I was thoroughly impressed with the character development. Quickly taken with Triss & Hugh. I have a tendency to really take to secondary characters, the main are great, amazing even… but I am in love with Polly. How quickly she takes to Triss in their initial meeting. That instant sisterhood was hilarious, and puts Hugh in his place immediately. Then the riot scene… OMG! Triss is fearless, and you can see the second Hugh’s protection instinct overtakes all reason. All emotions were on high alert during this entire scene. And the story just gets better from here. The mystery surrounding Beatrice’s past kept you guessing right up until the end and I was so happy with how her last & present came together. And what story is complete without a villain worthy of distaste. Edith I’m all her vanity and selfishness certainly lives up to her foul reputation. But like a good secondary character, I have a soft spot for a good villain and I am intrigued to see her redemption. A truly fabulous story with love, scandal, intrigue and action. Well done indeed!

How to Get Away with Marriage

3.5

This is my first novel by author Fenna Edgewood and it is a lovely and wholesome novel.

Tropes:
Fake dating (marriage)
Enemies to lovers
Hidden identity
Slight rags to riches

A sweet story that surrounds two individuals who have very different social standings. I really enjoyed the story and felt it was well written however I just didn’t love the characters.

The plot was interesting and I loved how the two main characters interacted with each other, it was really sweet to see as you can definitely see their relationship progress and develop as the story goes on.

However, I felt that the story dived into secondary characters too much, I would’ve loved to learn more about Triss and Hugh as I felt that there was a lot of information dumping and not a lot of expansion on it.

By the time I finished the book I didn’t really feel anything anything and although it’s a short sweet book I could barely remember anything that had happened. It is enjoyable though and I do recommend it if you like a Cinderella type historical romance.

I do intend to read the series from book 1 so maybe when I do my opinions will change but this is my review of this book alone.

Will I reread in the future? Maybe if I start the series from book 1.

Will I read anything else by the author? Yes, I rather like the authors writing so will maybe read another book by her. I am also aware that this book is number six in the series so I might go back and start from #1.

Thank you BookSirens for this eARC in exchange for an honest review

The first book in Fenna Edgewood’s new series “Must Love Scandal” has all the sophistication of the Gardner Girls, with even more laughs and witty banter.

Our hero, Hugh Cavendish - a side character from a previous book who is completely deserving of his hero status - is heartfelt and hunky. There is nothing I love more than a hero who can look at himself and realize he’s falling for the girl. And then bend over backward to prove himself worth of her. *swoon*

Triss, meanwhile, is a heroine full of angsty drama and sass (just the way I like them)! I love her determination, her faithfulness to herself and her values, and her autonomy over her body. She could have been swept out of modern day and dropped into the Regency, and that sensibility is very refreshing.

Don’t miss this new release! It’s funnier, angstier, cleverer, and steamier. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I have been granted an advanced copy of this book by the author. This review is posted willingly and the opinions herein are my own true and honest reflections.

Frothy fake-engagement story

Triss and Hugh are thrown together when he needs a fake fiancée to secure his inheritance from his elderly aunt, and she needs rescuing from a lecherous patron of the school where she teaches. As they get to know each other better, they realize how much they have in common and a true romance blooms.

I loved that the author populated her story with many interesting characters and gave us a secondary romance as well. I do wish the men in these romances - Hugh and Reggie - came across as more mature than they did. At times it felt like they were barely out of their teens and not yet grown up enough to be anyone's romantic hero. But Hugh does come through when it counts, and his heart is always open to any concerns Triss may have about their future.

While there is a HEA for the two couples, this book ends with an event that won't be resolved until the next installment. The writing was engaging and easy to read, despite a few grammar and historical inconsistencies. I'm interested enough to read on with the next book in the series. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

This is a great book! I have loved the stories I have read by Fenna Edgewood. This book is no exception. She has created a strong character in Beatrice Wesson who has secrets that would have devastated most women. And, she has created the perfect male lead for her in Hugh Cavendish. He is handsome, just as strong-willed as Beatrice, but has a soft, protective center when it comes to his dealings with her. The only thing I did not like was the cliffhanger. However, it has left me curious to see what the next installment for may bring for the secondary character Claire.

This is a first time read for me by Ms Edgewood and I can guarantee it won't my last. It is a delightfully well-written and witty read which I had so much fun reading. Fake engagements are one of my favorite tropes! The characters were well-developed and I enjoyed getting to know them. Beatrice is an admirable and strong woman, and Hugh is equally as strong-willed, but he also has a sweet protective side when it comes to Beatrice. Hugh is under pressure to marry and comes up with a scheme for him and Beatrice to pretend to be engaged. Beatrice does not like the idea, but since she had to give up her teaching position and her home, she really has no other choice but to go along with it. Their feelings for each begin to blossom and grow and as they grow closer, secrets from Beatrice's past begin to rear their ugly head and put Hugh in danger. This was an intriguing and engaging read that captured my attention right from the start and I enjoyed it all the way through. Wonderful book! I can't wait to read more of Ms. Edgewood's books!

Fenna Edgewood’s “How to Get Away with Marriage: A Fake Engagement Regency Romance” is the delightful. “The Gardner Girls Book 6 / Must Love Scandal Book 1”.

Ms Edgewood is a favorite author of mine and this is another wonderful book I’ve enjoyed the “Gardner Girl” series and it’s fun family dynamics. This story is no different! I enjoyed watching Triss and Hugh navigate their relationship. Hugh is such an all around nice guy and Triss is intelligent but guarded somewhat. It’s delightful seeing these two find their HEA as they grow to trust one another.

The writing is wonderful! I look forward to the author’s new releases. With a great storyline, witty and sometimes snippy dialogue, characters you can grow to love and those you will surely detest she pens an exciting story you don’t want to miss.

Thank you so much Ms. Edgewood for this charming story of love and romance.

When I started this book I was unsure. It seemed very wordy and jumped about a bit. But after a couple of chapters it drew me in and I became engrossed in the story of Triss and Hugh. It seemed almost impossible that they could have a happy ending especially with the evil Edith Carr trying everything to ruin it for them. She is so determined to have Hugh for herself that she will sacrifice anyone to obtain her ends. There were so many lies and half truths that the pair seemed doomed. I became totally hooked and read the last few chapters at one sitting - way into the night! Great story, glad I persevered and am looking forward to the next book in the series.

TITLE: While running to catch a “suitable” bride, Hugh falls in love!

SETTING: In order for Hugh Cavendish to inherit from his aunt, he must marry, and must marry soon! His aunt is due to arrive from America in a few months, and expects him to have selected an “appropriate” lady and be well on the way to the alter. Having been burned by his first love, and resolved to not allow his heart to become involved this time, he sets out to advertise for the wife he wants (she must meet certain criteria). Thus starting on this “rational” approach to marriage, he is setting himself up for a great fall— a fall into love that is!

CRITIQUE: I found this an enjoyable book, as I watched how Hugh went about “courtship”. Although the plot was somewhat predictable from the setup, there were enough twists, turns and surprises to hold my interest to the end. What we end up with is another story about how the Gardner girls come to find their true love, but the focus of the story is more on the groom, rather than the bride! This is not a deep, complicated historical treatise on life in the 1800’s, just a good, enjoyable story with which to relax.

Hugh Cavendish is a sweet gentleman who protects those who need it. Although a puppy crush has died when he truely sees who she really is. He comes up with a plan to salvage an inheritance that is only forthcoming if he marries.

Beatrice “Triss” Weston is a teacher who just wants to live the life she has come to adore.

When her position comes into peril Cavendish steps into sweep her off her feet.

I honestly did not know that this was #6 in the series until I left the review.
I found this book wonderfully enjoyable and easy to read. There was a twist at the end that I did not see coming. Also it has a cliffhanger but not so much of one that you can not enjoy the end. Thank you to BookSirens for the advanced reader copy!

I wasn’t sure what to expect as I had never read anything by this author and haven’t read many romantic historical fiction books but I really enjoyed it! It definitely gave me some Bridgerton vibes (both in London, both set in 1800s) so if that is what you’re into, pick up this book. Also, a very unexpected amount of spice 🔥 so prepare yourself!

I loved the way Hugh and Triss met and their banter was addictive. I LOVE that Triss is a strong and independent woman (which may or may not have been accurate for that time period) and could hold her own. I also love the support and open-mindedness of Hugh and his family (also possibly historically inaccurate but just pretend and enjoy it)

The author was quite vocal and obvious about some current political issues but that didn’t take away from the story in my opinion. The beginning was definitely a build up but the book picked up considerably about halfway through.

I did not give it 5 stars because it was somewhat predictable and didn’t blow my mind. It was still thoroughly enjoyable and exactly what I was looking for in a historical romance.

Now I’m going to have to go back and read all of her other books to get the background on some of the characters mentioned throughout this one! Can’t wait for the next book in this series.

*side note: I wish the girl on the cover matched the description of Triss*

This story sucked me in more than I thought it would, I was riveted.
Hugh Cavendish is just the perfect alpha hero but he needs a fiance in order to secure his inheritance and help his family finances. What harm could come from advertising for one? Until he quite literally bumps right into a woman so mysterious, he knows this won't be a faux engagement for long. But Triss Weston has secrets and she needs money, so this was nothing more than a job, until her heart tells her it isn't.

The storyline, while really nothing outstandingly new, is done so very well I never once was bored. I couldn't stop reading this. And there isn't just one villain, there are two- although the one is just so disillusioned you can't help but feel sorry for them. There are many minor characters who are all interesting and of course the return of the former Gardner girls who appear in other books.

What took this down a star for me was filler. There are many chapters that are just too wordy and things said repetitively. There are scenes that really did not need to be in there, that did nothing to really further the story, and others that could have been mentioned in a few sentences rather than pages.
There were also some things left hanging like The Potter family, the sudden acceptance of the Earl of Blackmore, how the story jumps particularly at the end. It all seemed rushed to finish up. Although as mentioned in the afterward, the author meant for this to end on a cliffhanger which it does but wrapping up or giving direction to some other aspects would have been nice.
There were also some timelines and ages that seemed off. And Triss' character wasn't always consistent, there were some things that didn't seem to fit from her.

Altogether though, I do recommend this book, I think it was a great read and I feel readers will be pleasantly enthralled.
Note- infant loss is mentioned, as is racial disparity involving Jews (although I will say, the author does an honorable job of both enlightening readers while remaining sensitive to the Jewish culture)

I love strong and bold Gardner Girls. This time around we have the Regency Era's version of the Bachelor, but good old Hugh is sick of the status. In comes the trope of hiring--so to speak---the plain girl to be his stand-in so he can be left alone. Beatrice plays along, she doesn't need a man anyway. Fake it to you make it but with great gowns and no cell phones. Fenna Edgewood always weaves together two people who fit like puzzle pieces, even if the pieces take a while to come together. I also love how this seamlessly starts a new series...which I am all for.

Loved it! Hugh’s aunt, from whom he is destined to inherit a fortune, has dictated that he show his maturity by marrying. Since she is due to visit in the very near future, Hugh decides to set up a fake engagement. Triss has had a tough life, and when Hugh sees her as a damsel in distress, he steps in and makes her an offer of employment as his fake fiance. What follows is a wild romp full of excitement, witty dialogue, and wonderful characters. Each character is multifaceted (except Edith), well depicted and very believable. I was instantly swept into this whirlwind tale and coasted enjoyably along until what to was both a happy ending and a cliff hanger. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

I give this story a solid 3.5 stars.

The storyline itself is really good and keeps you wanting to know what every character will do next. Some of the language used was a bit too modern and not quite Georgian, but I read past that and understood the intent.

My issues are with the heroine Triss. I found she ran hot/cold too much for my liking and her final surrender had some holes in it. As someone raised in a religious household who opted to be staunchly agnostic as an adult, I also could not identify with her desires in life. Also, with the upbringing that she had in that era, there are a lot of questions about how she became who she was.

I really liked the hero Hugh though. I loved him in To All The Earls I’ve Loved Before and his character is super fun. Though the timelines presented make no sense at all. With the age difference between him and the villainess, it made absolutely no sense that he would have been so infatuated and lusting after a child/teenager!!!

It was a good read and had good potential. I like how the author uses her books to promote social issues (even if finding real advocates in that era would have been rare). I’m not so sure I agree with the style of how she pushed on her one topic, and don't think it blended well with the storyline. She kind of laid out the plot very early in the book (see Ivanhoe).

I’m looking forward to read about Edith, even though that turnabout left me with a bit of whiplash.

The Gardner Girls Book 6 / Must Love Scandal Book 1 is a well written story with a good storyline that kept me turning pages. Hugh Cavendish and Beatrice “Triss” Weston enter into a fake engagement. Their story has drama, a villain, secrets and romance. The story was well worth reading. I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
