Stelsel onbekend

Hun cruiseschip sprong naar het verkeerde stelsel... Advocaat Liam Price kan zijn geluk niet op. Hij scoorde een lastminutedeal voor een suite aan boord van de Starlit Dream en gaat met zijn gezin op weg naar de exotische wereld van Aquaria in het Kepler-zonnestelsel. Kort nadat de reis is begonnen, blijkt echter dat ze ver van hun bestemming zijn uitgekomen in een volkomen onbekend stelsel.

Als dan ook nog eens het hele schip in duisternis wordt gehuld, verandert de cruise-van-je-leven in een reis naar de hel. Half-doorzichtige moordzuchtige aliens verschijnen en passagiers en bemanning tuimelen over elkaar heen in een poging om te ontsnappen. Terwijl de crisis zich verder ontvouwt, vechten Liam en zijn gezin in een dodelijke samenzwering een wanhopige overlevingsstrijd.

Al met al is Stelsel onbekend een spannend, mysterieus en intrigerend verhaal. Hierdoor zit je eigenlijk geen moment stil, want er vinden continu gebeurtenissen plaats. Een aantal van deze gebeurtenissen zijn zelfs onverwachts of geven een enorme plottwist aan het verhaal. Desondanks wordt Stelsel onbekend aangemerkt als een science fiction thriller, maar ik vind het ten eerste absoluut geen thriller (al is het verhaal wel spannend), maar ten tweede is het absoluut wel een science fiction verhaal. Door alle benoemende punten in mijn recensie kan ik wel concluderen dat ik het lastig vond om Stelsel onbekend weg te leggen en daarnaast heb ik Stelsel onbekend met veel plezier gelezen! --> Vanaf 30 september is de hele recensie te lezen op mijn blog: >www.elinebooks.com

Stelsel Onbekend is een standalone van Jasper T. Scott. Deze science-fiction thriller trok me meteen vanwege de prachtige cover. Hoewel dit genre een genre is, waar ik nog weinig boeken in heb gelezen was ik toch erg benieuwd. Hoe zal deze eerste kennismaking met deze auteur zijn? Wat zal ik vinden van dit boek?

What a gem! Enjoyed this adventure, it wasted no time getting into the action and for a while it was an amazing mass of aliens, body parts and choas. Our characters completely at a loss as to what was going on and how on earth they had got in the middle of it.
Then cleverly, the story and plot is peeled back and the deceptions and back stories come to mingle with why they are all there.
Well written, compelling page Turner which had me reading into the wee small hours until I'd finished!

Hmm. There were too many convenient plot devices in this novel for me to really recommend it. I'm not going to riddle this review with spoilers in order to justify my opinion, so I'll just say that the world building was lacking, the mystery wasn't very mysterious, and there were too few likeable characters. Also, the ending was incredibly abrupt.

Dit zou een prima film kunnen zijn, met veel actie en plottwists. Gelukkig ook niet teveel ingegaan op details van hoe de omgeving en technische dingen precies werken in een wereld 500 jaar later. Sommige sci-fi schrijvers verliezen zich daarin, willen teveel uitleggen van hoe alles werkt en dat gaat ten koste van het verhaal. Dit gaat lekker snel, is spannend, en tijdloos juist doordat er niet teveel uitgelegd wordt. Alles klopt op zich wel.
Enige kleine minpuntje is dat hij soms wat ongelukkige verwoordingen heeft in het beschrijven van de omgeving, het decor of bepaalde handelingen, waardoor het simpelweg moeilijk voor te stellen is waar ze precies zijn of wat er precies gebeurt. Het is dan lastig een beeld te vormen. Op sommige momenten besteedt hij er juist te weinig woorden aan, zeg maar. Hoe dan ook een leuk verhaal: korte hoofdstukken die zich afwisselen vanuit verschillende perspectieven, zodat de spanningsboog altijd strak gespannen staat.

In Stelsel Onbekend heeft Liam Price een met zijn gezin een reis gewonnen op het ruimteschip de Starlit Dream. Dit cruiseschip dat van alle luxe en gemakken is voorzien, zal hen naar de tropische vakantieplaneet Aquaria in het Kepler Zonnestelsel brengen. Maar algauw wordt het schip aangevallen door half doorzichtige aliens en verandert de droomreis in een reis naar de hel.
Liam en zijn gezin moeten vechten om te overleven als blijkt dat ze in een heel ander zonnestelsel terecht zijn gekomen. Was het wel een ongeluk dat ze daar kwamen? Wat willen de half doorzichtige aliens?
Een belangrijke verhaallijn in het boek is die van de Vitalics. Dat zijn supplementen gemaakt van een buitenaards wezen waardoor je er op je tachtigste nog net zo fit uit kunt zien als toen je dertig was. Deze Vitalics zijn erg duur en de gewone mensen kunnen die niet betalen. Liams vrouw werkt al haar hele leven aan de ontwikkeling van een synthetische versie van Vitalics. Maar voor wie werkt ze nou echt?
Eén van de personages aan boord is de robot Jules. Hij is bijna niet van menselijk te onderscheiden en is de persoonlijke assistent van de familie Price. Is Jules echt een robot of heeft hij ook een eigen wil.
Dit boek neemt je mee op een reis door het heelal. Langs moordzuchtige aliens, exotische werelden, teleportatie en ethische vraagstukken.

Wow! This was one exciting, and very tense book. There was so much action going on that it kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. One of the best Sci-Fi books I have read. Jasper Scott is such an amazing writer, and I already have a whole list of his books I want to read. He writes murder/mystery, and Sci-Fi mostly. I would not only recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Sci-Fi, but I would recommend the Author as well. I have read so many of his books already, and I have not been disappointed yet. He has some imagination that make for a good read all the time.

Absolutely wonderful novel

This is the second stand alone book by this author I read and he did not disappoint.

Great characters, each distinct and so real by the end of the book you know them as people.

Non stop exciting action, twists that make your head spin, simply a joy to read.

If you like science fiction, with evil aliens, morally gray characters, and exotic planets, this book is for you.

I enjoyed Into the Unknown.  It has its cliches, and it leans on familiar  formulas.  Character motivations are genuine but underdeveloped.  There were some fun religious themes and I daresay controversial conservative ideas.  It would take a re-read to flesh that out.  All in all science fiction fans could do worse than this action-packed but light adventure.

Average, mass produced sci-fi with some seemingly religious/conservative themes that put a sour taste in my mouth. Listened to it on a whim for a weekend of long drives, and would have put on something else if it wasn't the only thing I had downloaded. Predictable plot "twists," stale and poorly conceived aliens, repetitive action, just meh.

Quite good!

I found the book quite good! Usually everything I look at these days is three or more volumes long, and sometimes you have to wait years for all the parts. Not the Scott Stand Alones! Complete and good in one volume, no waiting.

Something of a Swiss Family Robinson Space Opera with the family of Mom, Dad & two kids dealing with skullduggery, robots, cyborgs, aliens and villains. A fast paced tale of the hijacking of a star ship for the purpose of nabbing a fountain of youth wonder drug. An amusing read.

Great book.

Great story with a totally different take on human and aliens interactions. The alien world is truly beautiful and dangerous. The aliens are different from anything I have read so far. The human characters are excellent and their interactions are visceral and enlightening.
