The only thing worse than an assassin is a zombie assassin.
That's what I find myself up against when a celebrity hypnotist turns up dead on Christmas. Except this killer is no ordinary zombie, and I should know. The name's Cisco Suarez, and besides being the Miami Police Department's resident supernatural consultant, I'm a practicing necromancer.
With a series of murders threatening to reveal the existence of magic, anti-animist militias capture the public heart. The streets are rife with unrest and vigilantes that aren't me.
To add to my growing list of distractions, a tenacious FBI agent swears I'm the infamous Shadow Man and uses increasingly hostile tactics to uncover the truth. Meanwhile, my girls Fran, Darcy, and Milena all find themselves in existential trouble.
Against all that, I still have a killer to find. So I enlist the help of a curious dog, dig up an old grave, and tie the zombie's origins to the Twelve Days of Christmas. Talk about holiday cheer.
Is it Christmas season or hunting season, and who's hunting who?
Domino Finn is an entertainment industry veteran, a contributor to award-winning video games, and the grizzled Urban Fantasy author of the best-selling Black Magic Outlaw series. His stories are equal parts spit, beer, and blood, and are notable for treating weighty issues with a supernatural veneer. If Domino has one rallying cry for the world, it's that fantasy is serious business.
Love Finn's Black Magic Outlaw series. Cisco Suarez is an odd sort of anti-hero. He wants to do what's right, but it doesn't always work out. There's an undead assassin stalking Miami. It seems to be targeting supernaturals. Cisco finds himself helping the MPD with the investigation while also smack in the middle of what might become an inner city war between Miami's supernatural dwellers and an organized group of militia looking to eradicate them. Cisco's circle is small, but a great group of characters. I won't say it's nonstop action but it's pretty close
Up until this point I really enjoyed the series. It's had it flaws, but the story was good enough for me to look past it. This one however, just felt too busy. It was trying to go in too many directions and none of it seemed to matter to the overall story arc. A lot of it felt forced and contrived. The villain reveal fell flat, but the story continued on with nothing to show for it. Also, the stew analogy went on for way too long. Here's to hoping the next one is better.
There's a new word out, parahumans. Coined by an anti-paranormal and anti magic group, who have sworn to eliminate any and all magic users and non humans. This, of course, affects Cisco as an animist and necromancer. Add to the mix, someone or something is killing magic users, the local police and the FBI are involved and Cisco is the only one who can help. Great read, Domino Finn did it again!
The worst ending of any book I have ever red and no word about a ninth book. Also it was so confusing. Too many characters and situations going on. The worst book in the series. How this author could leave his readers hanging he must be a real selfish person or just a a$$
