A great conspiracy threatens the Roman Empire. An adventure that combines Roman Mythology, LitRPG, and Dungeons and Dragons!
Three innocent citizens must thwart a malicious plot to overthrow the Roman Empire. These unlikely travelers will trek throughout Roman Hispania fighting bandits, rogue Roman soldiers, and gladiators. At the same time, they will have to put their political differences aside. In this high fantasy Roman world, they will also find themselves fighting zombie legionnaires, undead dragons, large beasts, and even mythical creatures such as the Cyclops.
With not much to go on, the travelers suspect Rome is doomed after getting a cryptic message from a dead sailor and a strange medallion he wore. A sinister necromancer who is a Roman turncoat threatens to plunge Rome into a period of darkness. Is this necromancer pulling the strings or is there an even higher power? And how does the secret Arcani intelligence society play into this ‘betrayal’?
The heroes will level up their skills as they travel through Roman Hispania. There are many towns to explore, friendships to create, mines to dig, and cryptic puzzles to solve. Can the three travelers halt the plot of betrayal or will Rome fall to this unknown evil force?
A large but dangerous world awaits the travelers in this LitRPG adventure!
The author has an unusual style if mixing fiction with D&D. You can enjoy the book without a gaming background, just a tiny bit of patience. I hope to read about the next quest soon.
I thoroughly enjoyed this one! Angelus Maximus is a great weaver of historical fiction which is evident from his previous series, The Punic War. His love for gaming and history, Roman to be precise, helps add stamina to his story and the numerous characters. The story revolves around Marius, a noble Roman sailing with his bard Mucous when pirates attack and sinks his vessel. They make it to shore where they are attacked by Griffon. The battle takes the board's life as Marcus enters the fight and saves Marius with wild magic. There's a plot uttered by the bard that Marius's brother in law is in danger, implicating the Arcani mages which leads them on a long quest for the truth. There's of drama action-packed base-turn fighting and witty banter between the party, especially when Aeila joins them, as more nefarious plots unfold with each new side quest. Can they stop the Arcani plot or will they join the ranks of the undead? No spoilers but a lot of fun finding out! I highly recommend this one!
Even though I had faith in this author after reading his books from Punic Wars series, I was a bit concerned about his new mix of genres and subgenres of historical, fantasy, Roman mythology, LitRPG, adventure, dragons, cyclops, and zombies. Especially since fantasy is not one of my strongest and favorite genres (lately). And zombies in the Roman Empire? Seriously?
Angelus Maximus took a bold step and created and solved an impossible puzzle, putting each part of this unusual and awkward mix where it belonged. Making impossible realistic. Readers who fancy authors who are not afraid to take chances with their stories will like this book despite its length. Or maybe because of it.
Angel never disappoints, and I was thrilled to see the zombies in this tale. I have never played D&D, so that took some getting used to, but overall, another fun romp with new scary characters, crocs, mages, and dragons, oh my. It’s like a video game you’re watching but notched up by ten. Fun, and good.
Angelus has an imaginative and unique way of writing. He has introduced me to a genre that Im normally not drawn to. But the way he blends his vision of a D&D style world with his storytelling is to be admired. I like that he stands out from the crowd - good on you!
If you like good fantasy and love D&D this is the perfect book for you. Good characters, awesome mythos and gaming all in one. Not only did I love it, I bought a copy for my son as well.
