Effortless: A Lake Family Novel

Rate this book
Who knew a cancelled flight would turn out to be the best night of my life?
He didn’t know what my life was like before he offered me a seat at his table.
I don’t know how, but he could see I was crumbling inside.
I had become an expert at hiding my true feelings and life’s desires but with Cash, he saw through the mask I had grown accustomed to wearing.
That night with him was the first time I was able to be myself. He listened to me.
For the first time in my life, I felt free, wanted, and cherished. But more than that, I felt seen.
Our time together was effortless but unforgettable.
But the night came to an end too soon.

The first time I saw her I could see a sadness in her eyes. As the night went on, the sadness lifted and I found myself doing anything I could to make it disappear.
But the night we spent in each other’s arms wasn’t enough. I needed more with her. Not just her body, her heart and mind.
For the past sixteen years I’ve dreamt of her, compared everyone else I meet to her, and longed for just one more night with her.
Then she walked into my small town and changed my life forever.
Now I can only hope her accepting my love comes as effortless as loving her.

This is such a beautiful story! A swoony and heartfelt second-chance-romance, and a gorgeous story of reconnection with the one who got away.

This is the third book in the Lake Family series (the second full-length novel), and it’s the story of Cash Lake. Years ago during a freak snow storm, a cancelled flight led Cash to spend the night with a beautiful girl. They shared a freakish connection, talking late into the night before spending a hot and unforgettable night together, but both got on their planes the next day and went back to their lives..It’s been sixteen years, and now Hadley has shown up in his small Tennessee town, and she’s about to rock his whole world.

Hadley grew up with wealth and privilege but was trapped by her parents who were all about image. Practically forced into marriage and a life that she didn’t want, she has finally broken free, and she’s starting fresh with her teenage daughter in the small town of Red Oak. She has settled in well and is loving her new life, and things only get better when she and Cash find each other once again.

OMG, the chemistry between these two is insane right from the very first moment! They know each other, they are thrilled to see each other, and they don’t hold anything back in reconnecting. Though the attraction is strong, they don’t just dive into a romantic reconnection. Cash acknowledges that Hadley has just gone through a major life change, and he’s willing to wait for her to be ready for all that he wants with her, but he makes his desires known, and we get a wonderful build-up to something that you just know is going to be epic.

“I shouldn’t have let you go,” I whisper. “Knew it. That morning when I watched you walk to your gate at the airport, something in me said to chase you. I didn’t. I fucked that up for us. I let you walk away from me, and it felt like I was letting go of a part of me.”

There’s no stupid behaviour, no game playing, just two people who want to be together, and who slowly and functionally work their way up to it, not hiding anything from each other, and going all in when they’re ready. It’s so wonderfully functional and I loved watching them find their way to each other.

“How can it be that I spent one night with you a lifetime ago and you’re here with me now, and you still take my breath away? How did I never stop wanting you all that time?”

Cash is a wonderful romantic hero! He is sweet and thoughtful, understanding and kind. He’s romantic and a gentleman, and he’s not afraid to put himself out there for his girl. And when they finally take the big step into actually being together, the man is alpha and domineering in all the best ways, and the sexy time is seriously steamy!

“Spent one night with you and I’ve missed you for sixteen years,” I admit. “You got in my heart and I haven’t been able to get you out.”

This is a wonderful, sweet, family romance, written just how Jennifer Van Wyk writes best. There are lots of sweet moments, lots of small-town living experiences, and lots of family involvement. Hadley has a teenage daughter and fantastically entertaining friends in her life, and Cash has his family who unreservedly have his back, but also live to taunt him, so there’s lots of fun times spent with the side characters.

“This is about Hadley, isn’t it?”
I know my face gives everything away because I can feel how big my smile is.
“It’s about Hadley,” Corbin confirmed. “Look at his face. He can’t even hide it.”
“He looks like he’s constipated,” Boone adds, laughing. “Why are you making that face? Don’t do that around Hadley. She’ll be a runner for sure.”

There is a bit of drama external to the relationship which brings some depth and an opportunity for more character growth, and I really enjoyed watching Cash and Hadley work their way through it, standing strong together, and loving each other through everything.

“You were the one for me then and you still are. Always will be.”

This book is sweet, beautifully romantic and full of swoon, and I loved it!

4 stars!

Cash & Hadley's story is an effortless read! It's heartwarming and well paced, spicier than this author's previous works, and full of LOL and big grin moments. There are a couple of things that may require tissues, but not in a bad way!

Hadley has some family issues, but I enjoyed how they (mostly) worked out. And the co-parenting relationship in the story is *chef's kiss* done so well! Then there's the Lake family, full of swoony deliciousness that I'm looking forward to continuing in future stories!!

And... Kevin! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Excellent read!!

A second chance romance - 15 years later!
Eek!!!
Cash and Hadley had one night together 15 years ago. When he finally sees her in Tennessee with a 15 year old daughter, he thinks he’s a father. Unfortunately, Brooklyn isn’t his daughter. Poor Cash doesn’t know how to feel - sad he doesn’t have a daughter or happy Hadley didn’t keep her from him.
I thought this story was great! It’s well written and flowed well. It didn’t feel rushed even though it could have since we skip a few weeks twice. You’ll love these characters as much as me once you immerse yourself within the Lake family!

Effortless by Jennifer Van Wyk was such a sweet and charming second chance romance. This is part of the Lake Family series, but can be read as a standalone, though I highly recommend Indescribable as I loved it as well. Here we have Cash and Hadley who shared an amazing time together and then do not see each for a long time. When they reconnect years later, the sparks fly…again. Hadley is a single mom and new in town. Cash knows he wants her but was so caring letting her take her time. I loved their interactions and how their relationship developed. The author gave us a story with great characters, romance and a family that is always there for each other and had me smiling.

Happy reading!

After living the life that her parents wanted for her Hadley is ready to live life on her terms. She and her daughter have relocated to be close to her aunt, but she never expected that it would also bring Cash back into her life. They may have only had one night together but it was also a night she had never forgotten.

Cash is both surprised and please to see Hadley again and find out she has moved to town. There is nothing he regrets more than seeing her walk out of his life and he is so patient and understanding as there is nothing he wants more than a future with her.

This is a heartwarming story about love, family and second chances. A chance encounter leads to the love of a lifetime that was always destined to be.

This was my second read by this author and now I remember why I like her books. I burst out laughing so many times, and it made me smile a lot, like a lot! Cash and Hadley met by chance, and a lot of time passes before we see them again. From there, it's a roller coaster of hilarity, sweetness and smiling. The Lake family is wonderful, their sibling rivalry is awesome. Granny basketball, the youngest on the team, pies, working together, and deserving awards. There is no intrigue, but you don't need any, you've got family drama, and you've also got Trotter. Now he is hilarious.

I voluntarily reviewed this book.

Loved this second chance romance!!!

What a perfect, feel-good, second chance, opposites attract, romance!

I loved the characters in this romance…especially Hadley and Cash! (AKA…Danny and Sandra LOL)

The side characters were all wonderful and I loved the way author Jennifer Van Wyk put the little twists in there with all of the family drama! She did such a perfect job twisting everything together. This storyline flowed so well, the small-town “feels” were great, I loved that the storyline took place 15 years after their initial “meet-cute”. (I did keep waiting for a particular “plot-twist” that never happened, though).

Effortless was the perfect read to give you all-the-feels, with low-angst, a lot of heat (whew!), and a lovely story that I would definitely recommend to romance readers! 5 stars!

Love this small town series from Jennifer Van Wyk.
This installment was not only Effortless to read but also one of my favorites as it is not only second chance/small town, this second chance takes place 16 years later!
They have a chance meeting in the airport in New York due to cancelled flights. This chance meeting also has some elements of instant attraction and the benefit of feeling like they have a certain link/emotionally drawing themselves to each other.
Fast Forward 16 years and these two are brought together once again with a new element of surprise and also discovering that the link they share has never been broken!
The romance is heartfelt and most definitely the cause of my attraction to this beautiful story.

I could not stop reading this book. I even burnt my childs lunch because I was reading and not paying attention lol. Cash and Hadley meet and have instant chemistry but only spent 1 day together. Years later they meet again and the chemistry is still there, stronger than ever. Their story is sweet, funny and filled with the love of a wonderful family. I can't wait for more of the Lake family stories.

well worth the wait

I was so excited for this to finally release! I was totally understanding with the delay and I’m glad it’s finally here! Finished it in a few hours!

This book has a hea of course! I love how there was no drama! Don’t get me wrong I love a little drama here and there but with Cash and Hadley I was dreading a break up. I was glad when that never came! Can’t wait for Corbin’s story!

I couldn’t read this book fast enough to find out what was going to happen. Cash and Hadley had a once in a lifetime night that left them comparing others to each other. Hadley is forced into a life she completely hates, until she decides enough is enough, and sets out to start a new life. Little did she know, she was about rock hers and Cash’s world. I loved how Hadley’s dad changed his life ways and her mom continued to be the wicked witch she was. Such a fun small town, second chance read.

This was a great second chance romance.

I enjoyed these character. Hadley knew she needed something different and broke away from her family to find it for herself and her daughter. Who knew moving to a new state would land her in the same town as the one that got away?

Cash has never forgot the one he let go after one amazing night.

This was a great read. Look forward to reading more from this author.

I absolutely loved this book and it was another great one from Jennifer Van Wyk. She wrapped me in with this immediately because of small town and the fact that it was in TN (my home state) was a bonus. I absolutely loved Effortless and Cash and Hadley. I loved that we saw their connection in the prologue and then we move forward 15 years to still see that connection is alive and well. I loved Brooklyn and all of the side characters. I can't wait for the next book in this series!

Worth the wait...

I've been waiting anxiously to read Cash and Hadley's story and it was worth the wait! Hadley was looking for a place for she and her daughter Brooklyn to have a normal life.

Imagine her surprise when she saw the man she had she could never forget, Cash.

Cash thought he would never see her again but fate step in and the woman he could never forget appears!

Effortless ... a heartfelt second chance romance

Jennifer Van Wyk has written a beautiful, heartfelt, sweet second chance romance which I couldn't get enough of. EFFORTLESS is the second standalone in a series of novels centered on the Lake family of Red Oak, Tennessee. This time it's Cash Lake's story and the woman he's never forgotten, even though it's been almost sixteen years since he last saw her.

Two cancelled flights have Cas and Hadley sharing drinks, a meal, and then an unforgettable night together. The next morning Cash wakes Hadley no longer being there. For the next sixteen years she is never far from his mind, so imagine his surprise when she walked into the town's only diner. Hadley and her daughter, Brooklyn, have come to live in Red Oak and Cash couldn't be happier. Looking at Brooklyn Cash begins to wonder if she is his daughter, is she?

Hadley has escaped a life in Chicago for peace, freedom, and a new beginning. Coming from a strict upbringing, a life already sorted for her, and parents who never showed any sign of care, affection or love, Hadley is determined to give her daughter everything she didn't experience from her parents. I loved Hadley, she was a strong, sweet, caring woman, a wonderful mother, and the best pie maker around. Cash is a true southern gentleman, a hard worker, loves his family, protective, determined, and utterly devoted to Hadley. Even though the connection they initially felt all those years ago is still there, Cash and Hadley don't automatically rush into where they left off. They slowly build on the friendship that was there when they first met, falling deeper for each other the more time they spend together. There are plenty of laughs and a few tears along the way, yet they are perfectly matched to each other.

EFFORTLESS was such an enchanting story to read. I adored both Cash and Hadley, they had a spark, a chemistry and a draw that had me wanting to know more about their story, which meant the pages turned very easily. Alongside Cash and Hadley are some of the best secondary characters I have come across. Cash's siblings are simply hilarious, their antics and jokes had me in stitches, but it was their care and affection for one another that really had me sighing. His mother is the kind of mum that everyone wants in her life ... Who would have thought that Granny Basketball was a thing? I loved the friendship that blossomed between Brooklyn and Cash's nephew Cody, they were like two little peas in a pod. The biggest surprise was the friendship that Hadley maintained with er ex-husband Trotter. OMG, I loved that man and his partner.

If you'e a lover of second chance romances, sweet heroines and swoonworthy heroes, then this is the book for you. Laughs, desires, hilarious family members, Jennifer brings them all. EFFORTLESS is another wonderful read from Jennifer.

An unforgettable chance meeting between two people turns into a love that nearly two decades couldn’t erase.

Le Sigh....another Lake brother gets his girl in this steamy second chance romance.

I”m honestly at war with myself over whether or not to call this an instant connection storyline or a slow sensual build because...it’s kinda both.

Cash Lake hasn’t been able to forget the young woman named Hadley that he shared one amazing night with sixteen years ago. After separating from her while knowing too little about her, they each went on with their lives. Cash back to his small-town to be endlessly harassed by his family, all in good fun of course; and Hadley back to her family of monetary means.

When circumstances change, Hadley and Cash meet face to face once more, and Cash cannot believe his luck. The woman he dreams of is suddenly within his grasp, and he plans to hold on tight this time if she’ll let him.

This was one of those anticipatory romances, the ones where you feel the draw between the characters so deeply, that you can’t breathe waiting for one of them to take that next step. It may have been effortless for Cash and Hadley, but not for ME! I was dying for these two to let fate correct its mistake from long ago. They belonged together, and seeing them chart their new course made my heart expand in my chest.

I love the nurturing feel that comes from reading a JVW book. Like every chapter is crafted with such care and consideration for her characters and her readers. You’re thinking oh this is so sweet, and then she delivers the steam! And these two were STEAMY! Good grief I don’t know how Cash managed all these years without the one woman he was clearly destined for. He is a gentleman, a romantic and a bit of a beast all rolled into one.
You will love these two and this story, which also hints at much more goodness to come.

EFFORTLESSLY is a standalone read with a happy ending. There are sexy scenes and colorful language if that is an issue for you. Set mostly in Red Dirt, Tennessee but the beginning is really in an airport in New York 15 years previous. She has been on a shopping trip in New York and is on her way to Chicago when the airport closed down due to a snowstorm. The airport is crowded as everyone is scrambling to find a place to stay, eat, or just sit. She had noticed a handsome young man in the terminal and he was sitting in the restaurant where she wanted to eat. She decided "what the heck". She approached him and he invited her to sit down.

Cash, 22, is in New York doing business for his stepfather. He is from Red Dirt, Tennessee and is on his way home. As the evening wears down and they have been talking for hours, Hadley,21 decides to go back to his hotel room with him. Everything is booked up so it is that or sit in the airport terminal. They have the one night and it was a night they will never forget.

Hadley is engaged to marry her best friend. A wedding neither one wants to take part in. Her parents, wealthy and very social guilt her into going through with the wedding because they assure her everything in their life will be over if she embarrasses them by running. It is now 15 years and they meet again. Hadley and her daughter are in his hometown.

This is a great story. I enjoyed it from start to finish. There are a lot of family issues but no drugs, violence, crazy exes, etc. Just two souls trying to find their own happy ever after against all odds. It is a very entertaining and good read and I definitely recommend it.

I was not paid for this review. I am not a writer nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am a reader and this is just my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 12/8/2022.
