Sinful Natures #1

Unholy Craving

Rate this book
As a newly appointed youth pastor, I blindly walk by faith, stumbling without the promised light down God’s chosen path.

Until a young man resurrects the sinful nature I’ve rejected in my strive for purity.

Isaac Van Dusen, my pastor’s son.

He’s troubled. Rebellious. Off limits to my lonely heart, yet gives me breath when I feel I’m drowning and in need of a savior.

Isaac’s hunger for sin rivals mine, the kind that consumes.

Burns like fire and brimstone.

I’m determined to stay in a constant state of prayer, begging for delivery from temptation—all while dreaming of being on my knees for entirely different reasons.

I want to submit to the unholy craving between us and worship the young man entrusted to my spiritual care.

But acting on the lusts of the flesh ensures our fall from grace, and I can’t allow him to be the second one to pay the price for my sins.

Even if it means living a lie for eternity.

Unholy Craving is a slow-burn love story between a youth pastor and the pastor's son. The best part of this story is the clear tension-filled scenes and yearning between the main characters. They both have a connection, but due to their roles in their church cannot act on their forbidden urges.

Because of this complicated setting, both characters are forced to dance around their feelings, which leads to dynamic scenes of sexual tension and beautiful moments focusing on their hidden and forbidden desires.

Malachi and Isaac are two characters that struggle with their repressed sexuality within their religion and cannot ignore their shared feelings for one another. Malachi is more repressed and reluctant to acknowledge his growing feelings for Isaac, who is determined to call out Malachi's cowardice and hypocrisy.

Overall this was a moving love story where two lonely people cannot ignore their feelings and eventual love for one another. Also, the HEA was so beautifully written that it had me swooning. Unholy Craving is a wonderful forbidden/taboo romance that had me enthralled throughout.

I couldn't put this down😍😍 The struggle with faith and devotion to Christianity on Malachi's end was well researched and written. I loved Isaac's tenacity and resilience, and I'm glad they got their HEA.

P.S. I need Zeke's book!

I absolutely adored Malachi and Issac’s story. I am so happy that they were able to find happiness. The author did an amazing job handling such sensitive topics and so happy she gave Malachi and Issac the Happy Ever After they deserved. It was both sweet and sexy. It was an easy read especially if you’re looking for lots of feel good and tender moments.

I’m not leaving a rating for now while I let this marinate.

First, I’m going to call out some reviews which I rarely do but I’m pissed off. DO NOT get your hackles up when a book about queer people vilifies Christianity. If that upsets you, it means you cannot comprehend the centuries of trauma religious indoctrination has placed on queer folk and you should not read queer books. And these authors have every right to include that in their books because it has affected a massive number of us.

So, despite some serious issues here, I couldn’t put this book down. It is VERY heavy on extreme religious commentary and word usage. This author either was in it, or did some deep dive research.

The tension and passion was there. I wanted these guys to have an HEA.

But despite the author stating that in the state of Pennsylvania 17 is a legal adult, I still couldn’t get over the fact that 2/3 of the book the one MC was 17. And sexual activity happened before he turned 18. That’s not taboo I’m interested in.

But I still read it. And I didn’t hate it. I dunno. For all the problematic shit I call out, I should probably be more mad about this but.. whatever. I think 2023 broke my brain.

4,5 stars.

The sensitive topic of religion and homosexuality intrigues me - a lot of religions consider it a sin and unnatural, even though some religions slowly change and become more accepting. And it's not always about the religion itself, but more about the people who practice, the ones who read the bible, or the ones who preach about it in church.
Isaac's father is one of those unaccepting pastors. He preaches about it, tells his fellow church members how sinful it is. He doesn't understand his closed off son, and he asks Malachi - who will be the youth pastor in his church - to talk to him and find out what's bothering him.
Isaac knows he's gay, and he hides his sexuality for his friends and his family, knowing his father won't ever be able to accept that part of him. He can't wait to turn eighteen, so he can be free and lead his own life, preferably in Nashville, where he will try to find ways to be a musician, talented as he is.
When Isaac meets Malachi, there's an instant attraction, and that's the beginning of a want and a need both men never experienced before. And the more Isaac flirts with him, and the more he tells Malachi he wants him, the more Malachi prays to be strong so he can deny his feelings and won't be tempted to do something sinful. But the longer he waits, the more he wants Isaac, until he can no longer stay away. The sexual tension between them was there between the lines, almost on each page. It grew stronger and stronger, until neither man could stay away from the other. So when they finally give in, there's heat and want and pure lust, built up from all these days of longing and pining for something forbidden.

This felt real. Some readers may find Malachi's struggles repetitive, but I found them realistic. It wouldn't have been if he could have set his strong believes and his faith in God, aside just like that. Of course he struggles. Of course he tries to deny what he feels. It's all he's been taught to believe. He doesn't want to sin, doesn't want to give into his weakness. Be strong. Pray. Stay hopeful for God to show you the way.
Of course there's a hea. But the path that leads to it, is hard and tough, and both Isaac and Malachi suffer to get there. In the end, it makes it all the more rewarding.

My first book by Lynn Burke, and I really enjoyed it. I look forward to read the second book in this series!

First of all, a pastor’s son and a pastor is just an absolutely perfect pairing for me, I had to read this book just because of that. I just love this idea so much and I knew it would give me a lot of religion related angst and I loved seeing the effects of religion on main characters in books. So I was very excited to read this book because of that.

I’m conflicted about how I feel about this book. It gave me all of the religion angst and pining from afar even when you know you shouldn’t, I was looking for and I absolutely loved it. On the other hand i’m just not sure how I feel about it. I really enjoyed the book and I loved these two characters together. I just don’t know how I feel about the resolution. It was the kind of resolution I love in these types of books but it didn’t really work for me in this book because it didn’t seem to really go with the characters and what they stand up for. The main characters choices in the resolution weren’t at all the choices I thought they would make based on where their characters were in their life, so it was a little jaring to me. I just didn’t really like how things were resolved.

Also I just don’t really like drama in books, and I don’t mean the homophobia that was in this book because I really enjoyed seeing how that affected the main characters and it was very realistic for the book’s setting. I just don’t like the life changing experiences at 80% that leads them to resolve the entire plot of the book in 10 sentences drama, it always feels a little too jaring for me and I think thats why I didn’t really like the resolution in this book.

All in all, it was a lovely reading experience and I really enjoyed this book.

I received an ARC of this book, and this is my honest review.

Forbidden Romance
Conservative, bible thumping community, led by the hypercritical Pastor Bram, with his surprisingly enlighted son, Isaac; goes head-to-head with the guild ridden, shame laden youth minister, Malachai. Between the nine year age difference, Isaac is only seventeen when they meet, and Malachai's position of power, Unholy Craving sets the stage for a very taboo romance.

How Isaac has resisted buying into his dad's teaching is a testament to his strength and self awareness. The wily way this young man directs Malachi, from the first moment they meet, is really nicely done. Lynn Burke gets deep into Isaac's head, and explores this character beautifully.

We get Malachai's story slowly, as his resistance to Isaac's advances war with his interpretations of God's Word. Weak sinner that he is, and mired in his guilt and shame, Pastor Malachai is ripe for corruption, and Isaac's advances are impossible for him to resist.

One of the most interesting parts of Unholy Craving, is how thoroughly Lynn Burke explores Pastor Bram, and how this man interprets the Bible. The person Bram shows his family, the personna he shows his community, at war with the loving father he perceives himself to be, makes him a fascinating character.

There's plenty of erotic romance woven in with the Christian fundamentalism, and a happily ever after for these young lovers. Plus, the possiblity for a sequel, Zeke's story, is on the very near horizon.

This was my first book by this author and I have to say that I enjoyed it. This was a pretty good taboo story...Youth pastor and pastor's son.

This book was heavy on religion. It's definitely the extreme side of religion, and sometimes it was hard to read. I would've loved a little more of them in the story withOUT the religious aspect. But I get it.

Malachi and Isaac both have some things they have to get through. I hated that they both had so much self-doubt at times. But they were absolutely perfect together. I loved that Isaac never gave up on Malachi either. Because there were times other people might've given up, but he knew what he wanted.

They have a great story that's filled with angst, heartbreak, love, and understanding.

Wholly Holy Holey yet Fully Fulfilled with Love

Some pieces of the puzzle just obviously fit together and maybe even have a cellular magnetic force of attraction. Others may see it. Many will crave it. Most will condemn it. Yet until you have seen the music and felt the notes as life vibrates in both of you with perfect rhythm and harmony, it is hard to understand the invisible attachment of heart and mind with the visible excitement that is hard to miss in pants or eyes when sharing the stage together with true love and no fear of missing God's love.

My first Lynn Burke book has me hooked on her already! It’s a well written story with so much heart and depth to it that you feel beyond moved and full of anticipation and hope for the characters!

Love is love and it is truly to bad that people aren’t accepting of that! The weaving of religion into the story makes it so much more real. For me it is sad but there is hope- this story shows this.

Wonderful, sexy and heart tugging! Love it!

My first read by this author. I enjoyed the writing style and the angst. This story had been told many times, but never in quite this way. Exactly what I expected to happen is what happened. No surprises, but a hot AF journey along the way.

The main characters are 17 and 26 throughout most of this book. Might be considered taboo to some.

I enjoyed this book. It was a forbidden romance read. A youth pastor and the son of the pastor. There was an age gap and so much UST; so angsty. I am not a fan of religion being so cut and dry and so that part of this book was rough for me. When Malachi is so torn between his faith and what he has been taught about homosexuality, it was hard to read, as it is something I do not agree with in my bones. I did like the way that he was torn thought in general, being that it was unorthodox in him having strong feelings for the pastor's son. I loved Isaac!! He was such a great character. I loved that he pushed Malachi to be true to himself and them. It was great when they did finally get together, which was slow going, that they did not hide from it. They were open and honest and it was very refreshing. The last portion of this book almost made me want to give it another star, but I just did not love the whole thing, hence the rating. I did enjoy it quite a bit and would recommend for something looking for this type of book. I was happy with their HEA and it was sweet and fun.

ARC provided and this is my honest review.

There was a lot of "taboo" to contend with in this book and I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to be most scandalized by (which ended up being none of it, really). Malachi was a 26 year old closeted gay youth pastor fulfilling a promise to dedicate his life to God and avoid temptations of the flesh (I hate that phrase so much). Isaac was a 17 year old closeted virgin gay son of a pastor who was counting down the days until he turned 18 and could legally leave his closet behind and follow his dreams of stardom to Nashville. All that alone was a lot to chew on. Add in the fact that Isaac was a very forward young man who was hell bent on getting what he wanted from Malachi (sex) and Malachi was resisting as best he could (which was to say, staying out of close proximity because otherwise all bets were off) and things got out of control pretty quick.

The preaching and biblical references in this book made me squirm a bit, but that's a totally personal issue for me. I knew going into this that it might annoy me, but decided to read it anyway and that's on me. My rating doesn't reflect those feelings at all. In truth, I appreciated Malachi's struggle. At times it came across as hypocrisy, but it felt authentic to his character because he truly was battling two opposing forces within himself. Isaac was such a good representation of so many young people I encounter these days. He didn't take things at face value. He took the lessons he was taught and formed his own opinions, made his own decisions. He didn't care about status quo or being a part of the "flock". He lived carefully because he had to, but he had a goal and a strong intention to fulfill it so he could live authentically.

For me, the attraction between Malachi and Isaac came across as 100% sexual in nature. There was a connection between them and some similar circumstances that gave them a few things in common, but they couldn't be in a room alone together without mauling each other, so there wasn't much opportunity for some good old fashioned getting to know you. For people who love UST, this book was chock full of it, but it was at the expense of growing the relationship IMO.

The stars didn't start falling from my rating until things began to come together too easily. It was like Malachi went to sleep one night and woke up the next day with an entirely new outlook on life. He went from guilt and repentance and literally locking the door to keep Isaac out to yes please, I'll take one of everything and I'm yours for life. It was jarring. He became a completely different character over night. Then there was some drama for the sake of drama, which I knew was coming when the chapters suddenly got really short and I was like, oh no here we go. Luckily it was short lived, but because it was short lived I'm still not sure what the purpose of it was. I guess a confirmation of sorts, but if that's the case, it was incredibly heavy handed and a weird way to influence a change in someone's entire belief system.

The ending was fairly abrupt and the epilogue was sweet but ridiculous because it took place a year later, which would put Isaac at the ripe old age of 19. Overall I thought the book was written well (overlooking the accidental name change of a character known by name only) and I enjoyed reading it.

I was sold at the blurb…youth pastor and forbidden fruit…sign me up! But reducing this to a hot read seems a bit sacrilege… it is so much deeper than a surface romance. I know this story will resonate with anyone brought up in an atmosphere of judgement and condemnation. Honestly, it could leave one a bit raw. So stay steady past the internal conflict as the dreams, music, and love made reading this an incredible experience. There is soulfulness in Malachi’s and Isaac’s connection…bound by shared dreams. I felt very swept away… it just flowed. I’ll use the authors lyrics to describe Isaac’s and Malachi’s relationship:
Consuming
Inescapable
Drowning and aching
Love…

When I read the description for this book, I immediately put in a request for an ARC copy - I had to know where it was going to go! Malachi and Isaac’s story is unexpected and a little hard to read at times, but there was so much love between these two that I couldn’t put it down.

Malachi Foley is the new youth pastor in town. He’s looking to start fresh, follow the path he told his parents we would before they passed away and avoid the temptations he encountered before Bible college. He’s spent years repenting for what he did but not feeling sorry for his desires, thinking that if he doesn’t act on them again, everything can be forgiven. But it’s left him feeling empty and lost, looking to scripture, prayer and his friend Zeke for guidance.

Isaac Van Dusen is the pastor’s only son and he’s keeping his sexuality a secret, but it’s causing him to withdraw, spending time in his room, writing songs to deal with his emotions and keeping things to himself to avoid accidentally outing himself. His father cares more about his flock at the church than he does about his own son and this disinterest and hypocrisy has Isaac counting down the days until he turns 18 and can head to Nashville to pursue his music dreams.

Everything changes for both of them the second Malachi shows up at the Van Dusen house for dinner on his first day in town. The pull between these two is undeniable, even though Malachi tries desperately to fight it. Malachi feels guilty for his desires and tries to hide them, avoiding Isaac in the process. But Isaac sees a lot of himself in Malachi and seeks him out, forcing him to confront his feelings and embrace their relationship because it will make them both happier than ever.

This story was full of turmoil, longing and angst due to the circumstances of Malachi and Isaac’s meeting - the church and religion played a big role in keeping them apart. They were taught that their feelings were wrong, that they’d be condemned for their desires and they’d be cast out. Malachi was afraid but seeing Isaac’s confidence in his acceptance helped him to finally be brave and expose their truth.

I really enjoyed this book. It was difficult to read at times, but I’d love to see more of Malachi and Isaac embracing their happiness and success together. Hoping for that and so much more in the next book...hopefully Zeke’s story!

This book was everything I hoped it would be plus a lot more! Yes I went in looking forward to the taboo forbidden romance, which was all there, but this story is so much deeper. We get to know about Malachi's difficult past and Isaac's suppressed dreams and passions. I wanted so much for both of these men and instantly wanted them to find it together! I was happy to see that our sheltered Pastor's son had a lot of sass and drive to get what he wanted in life. I felt so hard for Malachi as he struggled with what he thought he should do and what his true feelings were. These two were smoking hot and passionate together! I received an ARC of this book and I recommend you grab this one up if you love an all encompassing emotional journal of love and acceptance!!

for a book that covers such a heavy topic, the author did a hell of a job on this one! it was portrayed really well. i loved that both MC has different perspectives on their beliefs. everything was explained thoroughly and i loved it! especially when the time Malachi was so disappointed with himself for being gay and he turn to his God to ask for help so desperately or when the time the awful regret that came after they did “it” or the ache of them wanting each other but can’t have each other because it’s forbidden.

I became the avoider, staying as far away from Isaac as possible. And my heart ached because of it, the hollowness in my chest intensifying to the point I often gasped from the pain. The draw of him, the longing in my soul to sing, to touch, to taste, was more than I could fight in close proximity.

gah, that paragraph destroyed me!

but don’t worry, it’s not always sad because the HEA redeemed everything. it was perfect, fluffy and swoon-worthy and these boys are just sweethearts <33 the story goes on and on about how they try to repel each other in the first half and eventually, of course they found their way back and realise they couldn’t live without each other. overall, i loved and enjoyed this one so much! these two characters struggled a lot and i wish i could give them a hug 🥺

Isaac’s flushed face, the energy radiating off him filled me up with the kind of peace I’d searched for my entire life. I’d found heaven on earth in the arms of a forbidden love.

There is tangible love felt throughout this book. New youth Pastor Malachi Foley is trying to accept his calling and deny his heart. He has suffered some loss and does not want to be tempted again. Isaac Van Dusen (Head Pastor’s Son) is trying to bide his time at home until he turns 18. He wants to then chase his dream of becoming a singer. He also wants to live his life for himself and not his father’s teachings. He is tired of hiding who he really is. For some this is a taboo romance that they just can not think about, and I understand that. I, however, loved this story. It is about so much more than acceptance and love in a taboo relationship.

Malachi and Isaac’s story is to me what true love is about. The reasons to never be together sound solid on paper, but in the real world when a love this beautiful and pure comes along you should grab onto with both hands and not let go. Like recognizes like, and these two are just made for one another. Their passion for one another is tangible. The pain Isaac goes through turning 18, and coming out to his father is heartbreaking and more so when he realizes he lives his faith better than his father. The growth that Malachi and Isaac go through together and the HEA ending is so good. If taboo romance is your thing, then I highly recommend this book.

I read this book a couple weeks ago and I still cannot come up with a review of it that I feel makes sense because if you go into this book as just this taboo/erotica and don’t take it too seriously it can be a fun read. My only issue with this is how hard it slams Christians and Christianity the way it is done makes you feel like.

A. The author really dislikes them and
B. You should take this book very seriously the level of homophobia and hatred is high.

Therefore you cannot just put this as a fun steamy taboo read but the fun steam taboo parts make it hard to take the book seriously because it’s kind of over the top and comes off kind of like a book version of a caricature. It’s just very hard for me to review it since I can’t find a place to put it in my mind. I’m am gonna go with three stars because the author can write and keep you entertained and boy was the steamy stuff a lot of fun too. Just hope maybe next book the story feels a little more cohesive.

"Isaac Van Dusen. Thoughts and dreams of him over the weekend had filled me with an unholy craving I wished I could loath.
I wanted inside his head. I wanted to know his thoughts, the dark words he wrote in his journal. I wanted his body beneath me, his moans and whimpers filling my ears."

Unholy Craving...the temptation, the electric connection between Malachi and Isaac resonates from the pages to the reader's soul. Every magical note is caught between bated breath as they both search for unconditional acceptance, love, and peace.

Will their undeniable craving lead them to a life of self destruction or self discovery? This MM romance was brilliantly written with characters that stole my heart.

This is an age gap, taboo/forbidden romance and from the blurb alone, it should have ticked all my boxes. I liked Malachi and Isaac, even if I didn't feel like I got to know them really well.

I feel like between the blatant homophobia, repetitive talk of religion, and Malachi and Isaac lusting for each other, there was not much relationship development until almost the end of the book, which was lovely.

Still, it was a good read, maybe not what I was expecting, but good anyway. The book is well-written, just maybe needed a bit less religion/homophobia and a bit more romance, and not just the promise of it.

Whoa boy! If there ever needed to be a movie about a gay preacher’s son, this would be perfect. I absolutely loved that ending, it was perfect and beautiful.
My favorite quote was when Malachi told Isaac’s dad about them and the response “You’re going to burn in hell for corrupting my son.”
“If loving your son damns me to such a place, I’ll stride through those gates willingly.” Loved that so much! Isaac and Malachi’s love is so tangible from the very beginning that they were fated for each other, regardless of circumstances. I absolutely loved this story and these two beautiful men. The song “if our love is wrong” by Calum Scott came on while I was reading this and it was the perfect song for these boys! I can’t wait for Zeke’s book!

I read the blurb and figured I wouldn’t love or hate this book. But I was intrigued and I needed to read it. So I did. And I loved it. Longer review to follow while I get my thoughts in order.

As a rule, I tend to stay away from books that have heavy religious undertones. I'm athiest and nothing will turn me off a book quicker. I didn't find this book to be "preachy". It helps that one MC was a nonbeliever and the other was questioning the entire time.
I also stay away from books that feature a minor as an MC with the other being an adult. Not to say I can't enjoy books with those things. I just don't actively seek. This story was so wonderful I failed to remember Isaac was a minor when he met Malachi. And if it weren't for the fact that Malachi was Isaac's youth pastor I'd have probably forgotten the religious aspect too.

I loved every part of this story. It was a one sitting book that sucked me in from the jump. Even with the taboo aspect this story is angst lite. This was also my first book by the author and I'm looking forward to more.

Reading the pain that both Malachi and Isaac went thru growing up breaks my heart. I wish the world would accept everyone no matter what. The yearning these two went thru to get their HEA and the explosive scenes of finally giving in were everything. I wish that someone in the church had told them God still loved them no matter what and accepted them but not every church loves the way they are supposed to. I loved the way the two men loved each other and I can’t wait to see how Zeke’s story plays out because I know there’s got to be one coming…right?

Having recently picked up Ms.Burke's work i've been looking forward to picking up more of her books! As soon as this one was announced it caught my eye and i knew i had to read it next! I enjoyed it!

Malachi and Issac's journey had my attention right from their very first meeting! I really liked getting into their minds and digging deeper. I loved the chemistry between these two and how i felt so many things throughout their story! I wasn't sure how everything was going to go and that got me into it even more!

With Unholy Craving, Ms.Burke created a unique and good read! I'm already looking forward to diving back into the Sinful Natures world with the second installment, Unholy Yearning!
