It’s all Hallow’s Eve, Trickster’s Night. The veil is at its thinnest. It’s the one night a year when beings of other planes can enter the mortal humans’ realm.
Ru doesn’t think much of it when she’s tasked yet again with watching over her older brother. It’s silly, really, and pointless in Ru Ella Grymbick’s opinion. Not only is she not a practicing witch, but she thought this whole Trickster’s Night thing its own kind of created fairytale of warning/conspiracy to keep children from acting up. She’d long ago left her childhood behind her. Gammy Grym’s tales no longer held that kind of sway over her.
Gams claimed it was true, all of it—demons, trolls, ogres, banshees, goblins, any and all banished beasties come to return to the world they’d tried to rule and the puny humans that inhabited it, if only for one night. Ru wasn’t buying it. She’d yet to encounter a one. Witches and Warlocks notwithstanding, creatures roaming this world for one night to play tricks on hapless humans, she was supposed to buy that? Pfft. Pull my other leg, why don’t ya, she thought of all of that.
Ru Ella had the genes for casting, the magic was inside of her, but she severely lacked the skills required to conjure, ward, or any of the other things expected of a Grymbick witch of her family’s prestigious line. That was exactly why she’d given up trying to find her spark. She just didn’t have one! The poor woman could barely make a puff of smoke, forget casting protections spells.
If Gammy Grym meant to send her only granddaughter to protect her older non-magically gifted sibling, Ru certainly hoped for her bothersome sibling’s sake the tales told were just that—fanciful fallacy.
Seeing as Brock lived in the equivalent of a frat house of forty plus year old tragically single men desperate to relive their glory days, Ru was about as eager to spend Halloween babysitting her brother and his bro-dudes as she was hopping into a dentist’s chair for a root canal. She expected things would go as they always did, ending up the glorified candy handler, tasked with passing out candy so the guys’ place didn’t get egged, parked on their porch steps with a tempting tub of candy in her lap, keeping an eye on things while her brother and his “friends” heckled her to death. It was going to be a glorious eve—insert snark here.
Trickster's Night is exactly that. All hell was just waiting to break loose. Toss in a tragically awkward misunderstanding with an oddly determined goblin, and you have the makings for some madcap interdimensional mischief.
When Ru finds herself thrust into Kobold, as goblins were known, territory, what’s a human, crackpot witch gotta do to get the hello home?
It’s hell in a handbasket, with a goblin’s feat tossed in, quirky romantic comedy with a paranormal fantasy twist!
Everyone is so juvenile especially considering their age and then the main character's internal dialogue with quirky words and phrases just gets confusing. BUT, it is an interesting premise and things were looking up (I mean a little) when I realized this is a series about the same characters NOT interconnected standalones and... I just couldn't. I might have found it in me to finish this if it was a standalone, but I know there is no way I'd be able to keep reading this writing style for 3 books.
3.5 stars For all that this story started out soooo obnoxious with the juvenile humor, I adored Puhkke and he made the book better for me. It’s so rare that we get short king monsters and I was here for his adorableness. He was so shy and simultaneously insistent about Ru having proposed to him with a ring pop. Their love story went super fast and fun. Brock just pissed me off, but he was kinda written to be an asshole so that wasn’t surprising.
Spice: 5/5
Triggers: kidnapping, attempted murder via strangulation, near drowning, fat phobia, grief, dubcon (magical aphrodisiac)
It was exceptionally juvenile. All the leads you expect to be adults given their age. They may be 20s-40s but it they act like they are 12. Including VERY childish insults.
I have no desire to insult myself by continuing to read. Jeanette Lynn’s books I found are very polarizing. It’s either they are great are absolute drivel.
This was juvenile and hard to follow with the writing style. I could see where the author was going, trying to have slang and phrases, but even with the guide in the back… No thank you. 🙂↔️🙂↔️
Adults that sound like preteens with their insults and jabs at each other? Also not my cup of tea. 🙃
Dysfunctional family, lots of snark, and a misunderstanding with a shy trick or treater... Or was he? This is a super fun book for Halloween time fun. I can't wait for the next book!
I had to really power through this book to finish it. The inner monologue of the FMC was exhausting and long winded. It felt like there was too much going on plot wise to make much sense of the story, I love some good twists and big reveals but I could not keep all of the information straight... and don't get me started on the brother.... What kind of adult acts this way???? This is book one in a trilogy, but I will not be reading the others.
TRICK OR TREAT, Goblin Feat is an funny, ok read that can be read in one evening.
Like:
- This story is full of humor and laugh out loud moments.
- I like the potential for the story to expand to other worlds with the secondary characters.
- The papapa scenes really well written and steamy ♨️
- I like how cute Pukkhe's character is portrayed.
- I like that contrary to Ms. Lynne's previous novels with similar plots of realm transmigration, the FL in this story has the ability to go back and forth.
Disliked:
- Ms. Lynn has a habit of giving her FLs long inner monologues and repetitive insults/jokes. They are usually ok, but sometimes it bogs the story down and I start skimming to get to the point.
- The elder brother character Brock was really annoying. Especially, since he is like 40yrs old acting like some teenage college student. Like dude, grow up and talk like you have some sense.
- Too many subplots introduced in just the first book. I guess we are introduced to these plots now so that more can take place in the remaining two novels. However, it feels a little rushed and like an information dump.
- Considering Ms. Lynn is no stranger to world building or fantasy writing, this one a little bland/boring. There wasn't much world building, everything mostly took place in the normal human world.
- There was no real mystery/conflict to the plot. Everything was pretty obvious with hardly any plot twists or major conflict. You could kinda guess that they would end up together 🤷🏾♀️
I gave this story a three star review because it was decent but not very entertaining.
The why choose happens in the later books but I feel the Rue and Puhkke’s story ended nicely and I don’t need to seek what happens with Ru and the other goblinoids. From my understanding there’s a spin off series with Rue’s brother planned but from the sounds of it will get to into the omegaverse for me. Overall a quick funny Halloween read.
Rubia ruing her family duty. Tasked with keeping her completely null brother safe for the evening means dealing with his pack of idiots. But because he can't even sense magic, someone has to make sure he doesn't invite in something that'll eat him or carry him off. At least the costumed candy beggars are cute. Until one shy one comes to knock on the door, flashing a candy ring and wanting to take his bride home.
Spoilers ahead. I love Lynn's over the top zaniness. Ru is a witch with locked powers. Her hob goblin suitor is a hybrid gremlin/goblin who's tired of being lonely. His wish gets granted, but the culture confusion hits quickly. A lot happens, most of it within the space of a week, but the laughs keep coming. I have so many questions about the world, the glen, and other things. I know 2 sequels are planned, with 2 more possibly connected books- prequels. And a tie in for her brother's story. This world is going to expand. But: *How often does this tree grant wishes? It seemed like it was few and far between but 3/4 got granted practically back to back. *If goblins and gremlins, and possibly other beings, are being kept by elves, why aren't they disrupting this systematic servitude? They have cozy lives, if lonely, but what about their brethren? *There was talk that all 3 were looking for a mate. But the minute Ru pops in, the other 2 lose it. *What happened to his week? *How will poor Hashbrown handle this bouncing between realms? *What sort of abilities do goblins have aside from nature friendly aspects? *I need more info on all the various ways sapling was used here lol. It seemed to be a busy word with several meanings. Some context helped with, some not so much.
I like the way this is broken into thirds. It keeps the stories a little shorter, but not novella length. And gives each guy a chance to be highlighted.
Ru Ella (h), is a witch living in the mortal realm. Once Trickster Night aka Halloween she is forced to baby sit her horrible brother and his equally horrible friends. She is only doing this because her grams asks her to do this in order to protect him and the house is is staying in. While handing out candy she notices a shy kid hiding behind the tree. She approaches him and give him so candy not thinking anything of it. Unfortunately for her she just so happened to give this kid a ring pop and now she is engaged. Puhkke (H), is determined to take his new bride home to his brothers. He kidnaps Ru from her brothers house and takes them to the Realm of Goblins. Puhhke's brothers are not happy to have a human in their home and are determined to get her out of their lives. Puhhke does not want to live with his brothers anymore and follows Ru home. Now he is in human form and has lost all his goblin abilities. He didn't travel alone Speht follows Puhkke to the human realm to make sure that Phukke's new bride is true to her word. Now they have 7 days to make sure they end up together forever.
Spice level: 🌶️🌶️
This book is set as a trilogy but each book has each brothers HEA. That being sad I wasn't a super big fan of Phukke. Once he got home he seemed to be a bit too emotional for me. That and getting it on with a goblin in regular form skeezed me out. I just kept thinking he looked like a Jim Henson's puppet from the Labyrinth. Which I am not here for that. I did like the overall story I thought it was clever how her family line were referred to Stitch Witches and I have never come across that in all my readings. Plus, the chapters with her gram, her partner and father was hilarious. Her brother was still a jerk at the end of the story, but the bonus chapter is worth it. I am interested to see what happens there. As for the other books I am not sure I can get on board with warts and scales. Maybe I will get back to it but for right now I have to put Ru and her goblins on hold.
What a fun, funny and fantastical romance comedy. A story that dances between magical realms and the human one. This is book one in a series. Each story is the sassy snarky little witch Ru Ella adventure with the Goblin realm and the males in it. In book one is Ru and Puhkke's story, leaving interesting and wonderful new ways each book can go. Puhkke has wanted love and softness in his life, a mate. When he goes to the human world he is shocked and ecstatic to find his mate and she asked him to be hers. How could he say no? Ru is a descendant from a line of witches but she thinks she's a dud. When doing her Grandma a favor and watching out for her dumb a hole brother on all hallows night and handing out candy something goes terribly wrong. One candy ring pop and a big misunderstanding later she is ... engaged? To a Goblin? 😱 It's a whirlwind of comedy, romance, and misunderstandings. Throw in an annoying brother, a meddling grandmother, two older Goblinkin's, and a werewolf on a mission. You have a fun and fantastic page turner fit for a night of tricks and treats. This tasty little morsel is only book one and Ru Ella's story continues in two more books. But Puhkke and Ru do have this story all to themselves, for now.
I won’t waste much time on what others have already said, but the FMC was so immature. It was hard to get through. She was almost 40 years old and acted like a preteen. Not only was she older, but the whole premise was she had to babysit her older brother, who is 40 and all of his friends. They all acted well below their age and it was exhausting to read . Also, who has to babysit somebody who is 40!? That in itself, should’ve tipped me off to what was to come in the book
The inner monologue of the FMC dragged on and use words like ‘Gah’ ‘Argh’ incessantly. I seriously had to skim read through some of her inner thoughts just so I could tolerate her as a character.
I don’t feel like wasting my time, reading a book that sounds like it was written as if the main characters were teenagers. I tried my best, and I couldn’t power through
This is a Halloween/monster romance Between a witch and a goblin. The story line was actually very well thought out And the characters definitely had a good amount of backstory. you really got to know each one characteristics Aspects. I did end up giving this a 4 because even though the story line is 100% a type I read often It couldn't keep my intention like it normally would. Its actually a puzzle to me why it couldn't keep my attention because it was a really steady pace and had some laughable moments all the way to some really spicy moments.
We start with a normal witch/human family. After some crazy twists, turns and surprises they wound up being a paranormally mixed family. This book starts this change when a barely witch woman meets a goblin hybrid. My favorite parts are when all the different species interact.
This book had me a little confused at first, and the switching from one point of view to another — when it came to the grandma, the father, and the grandma’s lover — threw me off a bit, but you know, it was still a good read. It took me for a whirlwind at first because some things I didn’t understand. There's a whole lot of description in it for my mind to process, if that makes sense. But what a good read—I enjoyed it nonetheless.
I REALLY can't wait for the rest of the trilogy! Every character was so fleshed out that the whole story, with all the fantastic characters, sucked you in. I need the rest pronto!
I grabbed this book on stuff your kindle day because Halloween is coming up. I'm so glad I did! It's incredibly cute and sweet. I'm looking forward to nabbing the rest of them when they're out!
Oh man I can't to read book 2. I tried to wait to read this, but the book was call to me. Those goblins are something. Ru is going to have her hands full.
