Dvojčatá z Osvienčimu

Rate this book
V lete roku 1941 nacisti deportovali Evu Mozesovú Korovú a celú jej rodinu do Osvienčimu.

Mesiace strávené v Osvienčime opisuje vecne, citlivo a s veľkou dávkou nadhľadu. Jej rozprávanie je inšpiratívnym príbehom o vytrvalosti, odhodlaní a boji o prežitie tvárou v tvár extrémnemu zlu.

V epilógu Eva hovorí o svojej nevšednej ceste k uzdraveniu a pozoruhodnom rozhodnutí verejne odpustiť nacistom.

Eva Mozes Kor was a Romanian survivor of the Holocaust. Along with her twin sister Miriam, Kor was subjected to human experimentation at the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. Kor founded the organization CANDLES (an acronym for "Children of Auschwitz Nazi Deadly Lab Experiments Survivors") in 1984 and through this program located 122 other survivors. In 1984 Kor founded the CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center to educate the public about eugenics, the Holocaust, and the power of forgiveness.

I am very familiar with this story as i have read Eva's other book that has been published 'Surviving the Angel of Death:The True Story of a Mengele Twin in Auschwitz'. and i enjoyed it than and after reading this one i really enjoyed it again.

Eva grew up in a middle-class jewish family in Romania and lived a pretty normal life up until life changed for jewish people during Hitler's reign in power and now her life would be changed forever. Re-reading this horrific story of how this young girl and her twin sister survived not only the camp but also all the experiments that Dr Josef Mengele on them but all twins during world war two it just horrifies me.

Eva was a very strong and independent little girl who took charge and was the leader of her and her sister and it was a testament they managed to survive conditions in the camp to come out on the other side and live to see the world beyond the camp. I am always dumbfounded that this happened and we as humans let things get to this extreme and reading stories about how jewish people were treated makes my blood boil. There was death at this camp and it was apart of daily life during world war two but there were also stories of survival and strength like Eva's story and it shows the human strength and will power to survive such a horrific human history event.

As i sit here writing this review i reflect on how lucky i have been in my life not be scrutinised based of the colour of my skin or the religion that i follow and i have had a privileged life growing up and i can admit that. I rejoice the fact there are eye witness stories about how bad things were for jewish people during world war two and i will always read these stories so i can keep the memories alive for the million jewish people who died and the ones who survived the camps alive.

If you ever get the chance to read any jewish person's story please read it and listen to what they have to say because we as humans cannot let the fact that this happened die and there stories need to be kept alive for the generations coming so we can learn from past mistakes and take action to stand up and fight for what's right. Just know that you matter and your life will always matter because if i can take one thing from this story is that just being you is the most powerful thing you can do and do not change yourself and strive to be different.

Eva and Miriam Morez were only ten years old when their family was sent to Auschwitz from Romania. Their parents and two older sisters, Edit and Aliz, did not survive the selection line. Eva and Miriam, identical twins, were immediately selected for experimentation by Josef Mengele.
I concentrated all my being on one thing: how to survive one more day in this horrible place.
Although this was not planned, four of the last six books I’ve read were written by or about Holocaust survivors. While the first three either taught me so much that I didn’t already know or touched me so deeply that I know I will carry them in my heart going forward, I felt a disconnect with this book that surprised me.

Throughout the book it seemed like it had been written with a younger audience in mind. It was written quite simply, with explanations given for some words I expect most adults wouldn’t need. It was only at the very end of the book that I learned Eva wanted her book to be used in schools to teach about the Holocaust. What I read makes much more sense to me if I view it as an introduction to the Holocaust.

I also felt like I was a couple of steps removed from the story of Eva’s life. I understood the basics but the level of detail I’ve found in other books written by Holocaust survivors was missing, as was the depth of emotion I have read about and felt in other books. Although this was Eva’s story and she was interviewed extensively, I got the impression that she may not have actually participated in the writing.

Accompanying Eva’s story are photos and maps, which provide context.

I have read quite a few books recently based on true stories of the atrocities of the Holocaust, from the Librarian to the Tattooist, and whilst they are both incredibly moving accounts and stories there was something more pure and innocent about The Twins and it is written exactly how I would imagine a 10 year old terrified little girl and her twin sister would feel.

Eva and Miriam are 10 year old identical twins from a jewish family in Romania when the Nazi’s took them to Auschwitz. Separated from their parents and older siblings, the twins are sent to Dr Mengele to be subjected to several horrific and unimaginable medical experiments.

Eva’s young voice whilst narrating her story has such strength that it’s incredulous to the reader where she gets her courage and determination from. Her desire to live and survive is so inspiring and when you finish the book and then read the epilogue following Eva’s journey you soon realise that Eva was an incredibly selfless, strong and brave human being and I hope that the younger generation listen and follow her wise words.

This memoir of a woman - Eva Mozes Kor - who survived Auschwitz, along with her twin Miriam, is a brief book and I read it through over the course of a weekend. It is the fourth book about Auschwitz I have read this year and I follow at Twitter the Auschwitz Memorial which does an important job tweeting out photographs and names and dates of many of those people who died there - with a small number of notable survivors. Kor was saved ultimately because she was a twin and the Nazi Dr Mengele had a fascination with twins in his macabre and incredibly cruel experiments in the name of perfecting an Aryan race and eliminating what were perceived of as untermensch or inferior races. What struck me most about Kor's testimony is that she managed, somehow, to reach a point in later life in Israel and the USA where she felt able to forgive the brutality of the Nazi regime and felt that this allowed her to heal and move on spiritually from the monumental abuse of the worst chapter in human history. Many other survivors lost their faith in God and no doubt felt entirely unable to forgive. Kor even managed, somehow, to feel forgiveness towards the evils of Mengele, one of the Nazis who evaded justice after the war and was not tried and punished for his sickening and appalling crimes. Rest in peace Eva and Miriam and all the rest.

Feeling deeply moved and emotional but this book. Started and finished it within 4 hours. I couldn’t put it down at one. Once I started I was pulled into Eva’s world. Her story as well as many others are just incredible. This is the first one I’ve read from someone who was only a child when they went into Auschwitz.

The courage and bravery she had was inspirational. Being thrown into such conditions and her soul purpose was to stay alive and keep her sister safe. What all those twins endured from the “angel of death” was truly horrendous but has made curious into what he gave them. But even to the point of death she managed to somehow find that inner strength to stay alive.

What I also found incredible was the fact that through all this she managed to forgive the Nazis for all they did and even to forgive Josef Mengele. She said when she chose to forgive them it was like a huge weight lifted off her shoulders. Such a inspirational woman.

The story itself is obviously very sad, but the book does not delve much at all into the story and is very simply written. There was potential to explain much more about the camp, as this was only briefly covered. I think by the way it is written, the book is aimed more at young adults or children.

✡️Puncte forte:
- se citește ușor, limbajul este accesibil, însă este o carte „grea”, o carte te marchează;
- am avut pielea de găină constant;
- povestea a fost însoțită de imagini cu gemenele, cu familia lor, cu Auschwitz;
- lecții importante transmise: să căutăm mereu liniștea și pacea, să învățăm să iertăm, să nu ne pierdem niciodată speranța;
- mi-a plăcut că Eva a demonstrat că este o persoană puternică, empatică și curajoasă, sinceră;

✡️Puncte slabe:
- fiind o carte scurtă, mi-a dat de câteva ori senzația că s-a încercat o „condensare” a acțiunii (am simțit nevoia de mai multe pagini, de mai multe trăiri ale protagonistei, mai multe întâmplări);

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you Eva, you are such an inspiration and an amazing woman and I loved to read your insight into the terrible things that you and many others went through. Rest in peace.

I couldn’t put this book down, I enjoy reading and learning about World War Two, and I have watched many interviews with Eva. This book is heartbreaking but a must read.

Amazing! The horrors that people went through I just can’t even begin to imagine what it was like.

This book was heartbreaking but something I think everyone should read. I’m so glad I decided to broaden my reading horizons with this one.

This is just one story of many I’m sure need to be read to educate ourselves on the holocaust.

What a brave and inspiring women Eva Mozes Kor was.

Simply written and incredibly brief, it does feel somewhat like a beginners guide to Nazi atrocities. However, considering its main intention was teach young people about what happened at Auschwitz, it hits the mark as a story but astounds at the levels of resilience and spirit it must have taken. Harrowing but engaging.

‘Because of those matching burgundy dresses because we were identical twins so easily spotted in the crowd of grimy, exhausted Jewish prisoners, Miriam and I had been chosen. Soon we would come face to face with Josef Mengele, the Nazi Doctor known as the Angel of Death.’

The Twins of Auschwitz by Eva Mozes Kor with Lisa Rojany Buccieri is the emotional true story of a young girl’s devastating experiences in Auschwitz under the experimental work of Doctor Josef Mengele. Written in clear and simple terms, this affective memoir reminds us of the sheer endurance, resilience, determination and resolve of the human soul when faced with unspeakable horrors.

The Twins of Auschwitz unmasks the devastating story of twins Eva and Miriam, who along with their family were taken to Auschwitz. Upon arrival, the family were cruelly separated and the twins never saw their parents again. While the twins were subjected to many harrowing experiments at the hands of Doctor Josef Mengele, the rest of Eva and Miriam’s family were gassed. Eva’s remarkable account exposes the atrocities committed by the medical section of Auschwitz. The twins were given certain allowances in terms of hair and clothing, but this didn’t excuse these children from the horrific experiments performed by Mengele and his team. From disease injections, to starvation and dehydration, the twins were not immune to these daily tests of survival. Eva Mozes Kor recalls the events of this time under Mengele’s care with a factual gaze.

The Twins of Auschwitz is a collaboration piece told through the first-hand testimony of Eva Mozes Kor, in conjunction with Lisa Rojany Buccieri. Relayed over 240 pages, The Twins of Auschwitz includes a prologue, epilogue, afterward, author’s note, biography, picture credits and additional resources. What stems from all these supplementary layers is a full account of Eva and Miriam’s astounding experiences. The format this book takes lends itself to being highly a readable and accessible text. There were times where I felt (small criticism) that it was just a touch too simplistic, so an adult reader may find that this text is best suited for a younger audience. However, the impact of the experiences relayed by the author still cuts deep, offering up a devastating eye witness account of the horrors experienced by the twins imprisoned in Auschwitz.

A significant portion of The Twins of Auschwitz is based on the recovery process. We learn of Eva and Miriam’s eventual escape from Auschwitz, along with the devastating loss that hits home to the twins when they realise they are orphans. The resettlement process is presented to the reader, along with the emotions associated with being a survivor of Auschwitz. The long-term impact of the horrors of these experiences leaves a clear and lasting impression on the audience. What is remarkable about this particular story from Eva Mozes Kor is the fact that Eva chose to go down the forgiveness path, rather than the blame and anger route. Eva’s sense of humanity, peace and acceptance is admirable, given what she endured. This was a touching final message.

If ever you need a powerful reminder of a child’s ability to withstand great adversity with a sense of courage, conviction and endurance, The Twins of Auschwitz delivers this mighty message. I recommend this title to both adult and young adult readers.

Realmente horrible.

Eva Mozes Kor was 10 years old when she and her twin sister Miriam arrived at Auschwitz and were immediately taken to Dr Josef Mengele (later called ‘the angel of death’). Eva and Miriam were subject to Mengele’s abhorrent experiments. Only a child, she showed such bravery and determination, even in the face of death. ‘The Twins of Auschwitz’ tells Eva’s story, from life with her family in Romania, to finding herself in Hell and losing everyone in her family apart from Miriam, to being amongst the few Mengele twins to survive the Holocaust.

Compared to some of the other memoirs of Holocaust survivors that I’ve read, I feel that this one is particularly suitable for young people. It is written in a way that is easy to understand, is reasonably quick to read and is highly factual.

Well this book hit me like a tonne of bricks. It was raw, emotional and inspiring and I couldn’t put it down.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Years ago I stumbled upon an interview with Eva, the author. She spoke about her time in Auschwitz as a twin who was experimented on by Dr Mengele, “the Angel of Death”. She also spoke about her adulthood as a survivor of the Holocaust. One day, last year, I saw this book in Tesco and knew I had to have it!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you’re interested in learning more about the Holocaust and the twin experiments, I recommend watching Eva’s interviews and documentary on YouTube. Or read on! I’ll discuss briefly some things she went on to do in her adulthood.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
She started the first and only museum in the world dedicated to the Twin experiments at Auschwitz, and created it as a memorial for her twin, Miriam. She went on to host workshops around the world EDUCATING adults and young people on the Holocaust through her experiences. She visited Auschwitz many times and became quite a representative figure for being an Auschwitz survivor and twin experiment survivor.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Eventually, closer to the end of her life, Eva gave a speech at Auschwitz, with a Nazi doctor by her side, and declared her own forgiveness towards the Nazis. This was something of a controversy at the time. A lot of people did see her as a representative, and a lot of people did not agree with her forgiveness. Many could never forgive the Nazis for what they did.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
She died in 2019 and has left behind a huge legacy.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Her story is truly heartbreaking but also magnificent. Eva turned something so evil into something full of love and support and education. She turned her legacy into something so inspiring and GOOD.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I really hate giving 3 stars to a holocaust story as I think all these stories should be given a good rating due to their content. This book although moving was just too simple for my liking.

I found the writing didn't flow well and there was a lot of detail missing. The story of two 10 year twins, Eva and Miriam arriving at Auschwitz with her parents and sisters is heartbreaking. Dr Mengele saved them from the gas chambers but they were instead experimented on. I would have liked to have read more about what the twins endured during the experiments rather then the event being glossed over.

Miraculously they survived the horrors of Auschwitz and they ended up founding a museum called CANDLES for all the other twins that had survived as well.

It's a story worth reading, but it is written more for a child then an adult as it is quite simple and quick to read. It is heartbreaking what these people endured and most of us the world over have no concept what they went through. We can only read their stories so we don't forget and hope it never happens again.

In this book Eva herself forgives the Nazis for what they did. It's a very brave statement as I wonder how anyone could truly forgive someone for such a horrible deed. Move on with your life, not dwell on the past but forgive?...Eva found peace and happiness and I guess that is profound enough.

This book hit me hard. It was so moving, emotional and raw. A short, simple and powerful book about horrendous events, suffering, losing the loved ones, endurance, not giving up the will to live and in the end forgiveness. I could not put the book down once I started. Hence, I read it in only 4 hours.

In 1940 , cand fetele aveau 6 ani, Hitler a cedat Ungariei partea de nord a Transilvaniei.
