Noriaki Kubo, known professionally as Tite Kubo ( 久保帯人), is a Japanese manga artist and character designer. His manga series Bleach (2001–2016) had over 130 million copies in circulation as of 2022.
I'm currently in the state of an complete shock. A total bewilderment. I'm absolutely stupefied. I'm not entirely sure what I expected of this one additional chapter of BLEACH, but whatever I imagined it certainly wasn't... this.
As a BLEACH fan and an over-thinker from nature, I caught myself overanalyzing and overthinking everything that I saw and read pretty often. But the last time I spend a whole night while bawling my eyes out and overthinking everything over and over again, was probably during BLEACH's Winter War arc, which was a quite long time ago. I knew the author's tendency to turn things up to the point that I was just left with a big "HUH??" and my mouth and eyes wide open in shock, and there was also the state of genuine stillness, because I just didn't know how to react. Should I cry? Should I scream? Should I laugh? What the hell should I do in such a situation? I knew these Tite Kubo's tricks already. I experienced it time and time again. But with No Breathes from Hell I was genuinely baffled on how quickly I went from the feeling of explosive excitement and joy to the state of absolute devastation.
Part of me is fully amazed by the author's absolutely brilliant storytelling abilities, and is overjoyed that I could read this additional chapter, but other part of me is screaming in delusion and pain, refusing to believe that's what happened is real and desperately trying to wipe it entirely from my mind.
Before I will dive into a spoiler section (I need to get all of the feelings out of my system before I will explode), I just want to add that I LOVE Tite Kubo's artwork and, despite my problems with it, overall it was a pleasure to read his story again and to see all of my favorite characters again. BLEACH will always be my joy.
Okay. SPOILER SECTION STARTS NOW. Since No Breathes from Hell is the last BLEACH chapter, you will find here spoilers to the entire story - so be warned! If you care about it, of course.
Let's start with the good stuff, because this chapter has A LOT of good stuff that I loved with everything in me:
~ Ikkaku being Ichika's sword master.
~ Rukia and Ichigo's little bickering scene through the Soul Phone.
~ The Mayuri jumpscare!
~ Ichigo's job mention.
~ The introduction of Rindo, Tetsuzaemon's new lieutenant.
~ The introduction of Yayahara, Lisa's lieutenant.
~ The introduction of Hell Hollows and the comeback of the gates of Hell.
~ Akon's cool moment!
~ Renji being a protective dad ❤️
~ Szayelaporro's comeback and new look.
~ Ichigo's one sword
~ This scene:
"I'm going to kill you, Ichigo Kurosaki!" "Who the hell are you?"
Now let's go to the things that made me cry, certainly not out of joy. I will not dive into Kazui case (I want to like him, but him being so powerful from the start make me hard to do so) and not dive into the Ichika case (I love her, but I don't understand why she was able to see the hollows while no one else could see them). I will go straight to the main point, which is the enormous reveal of the captains fate after their deaths.
I wish I never found out about it. Because it breaks my heart into pieces wherever I think about it. I don't understand how it's possible. How is this fair? How could they have no other choice than to succumb to such fate, after they gave their lives to protect the Soul Society? I'm so hurt and confused 😭 This cannot be right, can it? Could this be just a mistranslation? A mistake? Could I understood everything in wrong way? 😟 Because if not, it means that all my heroes are convicted to spend eternity in the worst place possible. All of my heroes, the greatest people will land in Hell, and there is nothing we can do about it! I hate this! I absolutely hate this! 😭
There is also the issue of Aizen and Yhwach that Szayel raised that left me extremely at loss. What did he meant that they were the ones "holding the maw of hell shut"??? How could they be the ones to do so and why they?! 🤨 I understand that both had enormous spiritual pressure, but why would these two be the ones holding Hell together? Aren't there some guardians created for this specific purpose? How does Hell even operate? I'm so at loss of what do think about this! 😵 And also, what did Szayel mean when he says that Aizen's and Yhwach's SP disappeared?! None of them could just vanish into thin air! The universe would have crumbled into pieces long time ago! Did he have wrong informations or or or what?? I mean, Aizen literally cannot die, how could his SP disappear? And what was the matter with Ukitake, what role did he have in Hell, I'm so confused???
Tite Kubo had closed the chapter so suddenly that there is no way for us to get any answers unless we ask him (I doubt he would answer, though). I wish I could find out what was he thinking when he created this additional chapter and ending it like that! Will we ever get a continuation? I'm not sure if I want it. I don't want it to be canon. I mean, I know that's canon, but it's also not, because it's just a one chapter, not being a part of anything, really, so you can easily ignore its existence. The moment the real Hell Arc starts, it will became truly real and I'm not ready for that, by any means. Let's focus on the anime's remake maybe, yes? Or on animating CFYOW? What about it? Wouldn't it be better? It's much safer. Let's go with the safer option, please 🥹
Genuinely great. Kubo is one cruel man if he does not develop this into a full length arc.
In this chapter, Kubo introduces many new intrigues which were never fully explored in the original run of Bleach; what happens in Hell, why the Jigokucho, the messengers for the Shinigami, are called the Butterflies of Hell... Most notably though, the chapter teases the return of many (dead) characters, some of whom I would say were massively underutilized. For example,Captain Ukitake (one of my favourite characters) never even got to have a proper, serious one-on-one fight "onscreen" with an Espada or a Sternritter - and no, Lilynette does not count. Anyhow, the sight of his Zanpakuto piercing through Szayelaporro in this chapter gave me goosebumps.
All in all, would love to see this become a full arc. It will probably be one of the most emotional arcs, featuring reunions between both fiends and enemies alike.

This was a refreshing and amazing read. It’s been years we’ve waited for anything Bleach related bar Burn the Witch. Seeing Ichika and Kazui’s interactions with their families and friends was the first highlight for myself. Kazui’s infatuation with Hell was a very interesting concept when his genealogy is pondered upon. The lore bomb with Szayelaporro coming from hell and essentially cursing everyone left me craving from more.

Twelve years post the Quincy Blood War, the Gotei 13 convenes a ceremony honoring the esteemed former Captain of the 13th Division, Jūshirō Ukitake. Ichigo Kurosaki receives a gracious invitation to partake in this significant event. One-shot manga, possibly a pilot for a new arc.
