Mel Walker is an award-winning rare bird, the male romance author. Specializing in heartfelt small-town romance, he enjoys telling compelling romances with all the feels. A native New Yorker and life-long frustrated NY Mets fan, he enjoys baseball, reading, bike rides, and writing outdoors where he absorbs the energy of the city.
My first read by a black, male romance writer. I think the story was written well and the author was knowledgeable about life working in a hospital. However, the romance was pretty non existent. I really thought Angie and Reggie would have something even though she had the one night stand with Brayton. There's no cheating, just light flirting but there was just no chemistry between Angie and Brayton. The book is closed door for the 2 sex scenes that were mentioned which is okay for me but there was no longing, emotion, pining, none of it. Also there was too much black and white people this and that mentioned for my tastes. Their wasn't really an overall struggle to work through based on race that I could tell. I won't be reading the rest of this series

I was so moved by this one. Angie Carmichael is an orthopedic doctor who follows every rule to the letter. She has learned from those extremely close to her how bad breaking the rules can get. She does not want to loose her career or her values after all the hard work she's put in not to mention the scrutiny she has been under. Her one vice is when she goes to the edge of town to feel a little less lonely. She never shares her real name, her work, or contact information. Until one man. Brayton Patterson is a single father with a teenage son who is at the top of the baseball draft's list. A rare disease might just derail everything he has sacrificed for. I loved these characters. Angie is so strong in holding on to her convictions in her professional life as well as her personal one. She has walls that would rival the Great Wall of China. She is respected even though she doesn't see it and even when she does, she still strives to be the best person she can ever be. When Brayton manages to be within her walls he is empathic to her feelings. He takes care and respects her through everything. Brayton is everything I would want a hero to be. He takes responsibility as a teen to raise a son he wasn't expecting but would do anything and everything for. He stands for what's right. He doesn't back down to challenges that he faces as a black man. He sacrifices his own life for the life his son deserves. These two people are right for each other. They share the same values and their word means something. I was invested in their story and how things would play out. Rules are there for a reason but some times the rules don't make sense. It's really what we do with them that matter.
Another fantastic read by Mel Walker. I was so engrossed in the book Dr. Fix-It. The flow of the story kept me engaged as well as Mel Walker's writing style. I thought the characters were so well-developed and relatable. Angie and Brayton had amazing chemistry. I really enjoyed them as a couple. I highly recommend this book.
This story was captivating and had you gripped from the start. Brayton and Angie’s story is full of drama and at times will have you a little anxious. A story that fate plays a hand in to bring these two people together. Their story will bring out a range of emotions from sweet to sensual. The connection to the characters is immediate and the chemistry between them is electric. Another great read in this series.
I loved this book! Angie and Brayton were so good together! I loved the way that their relationship developed. Brayton was fantastic and absolutely perfect for Angie. This story was well written and emotional with amazing characters and a captivating story line. What a fantastic read and a great addition to the Doctors of Eastport General series.
Another 5 star book from Mel Walker. He did a fantastic job of describing not only two hearts finding each other and navigating through everything good and bad that comes with a new romance but also taking the reader through a medical diagnosis and how the doctors, hospital and family react from the beginning to the final outcome. I felt like I was right there with them and understood both the doctors thought process and explanations and the family’s thoughts, questions and feelings. Can’t wait for more books from Mel Walker.
Angie doesn't want to follow in her father's footsteps and has been a rule follower. So when a one night stand becomes more, she fights with her own rules. I love Brayden and Angie, they were so sweet. This story definitely had twists and had me guessing until the end.
Another fabulous book by Mel Walker. I loved the chemistry between Angie & Brayton and the sweet moments they shared and the understanding they had of each other. A great storyline. Just loved it! A must read!
Oh my word what a ride. I absolutely LOVED this book. The compassion Angie & Brayton have, the chances they take, the sweet swoon-worthy moments and even the heartbreak. It will tug at your heartstrings. It was such a deep and beautiful story full of healing, hope, trust & taking a chance on love. Mel writes a gripping story. Well plotted, it's easy to see the research that has gone into the work. Definitely do yourself a favor and read this book!! I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
LOVED THIS BOOK!! I wasn’t ready for it to be over. I adored all the characters! I love how the main character is a Black woman doctor who isn’t going out sad behind a man and she doesn’t have to sacrifice her entire career for love
The book is written with a much more mature and serious tone than I'm used to romance novels having. An important emphasis is placed on how good of a dad Brayton Patterson appears to be. The other man character is Dr. Reggie Morgan, an ER doctor at the same hospital that the main woman character. The protagonist of the story is the main woman character, Dr. Angie Carmichael.
SPOILERS!!!
A quarter of the way through it, I have some thoughts about the characters and the plot. First, the author seems concerned with character building so I feel like I kind of understand them even if it's through the eyes of the protagonist. Brayton seems cool. He's fun, he cares greatly for his son, he's smolderingly attractive. The protagonist feels drawn to him, first as a one night stand then as a reason to break her rules. Reggie works with her, he would understand without explanation how demanding her job is, he has personal connection with her past which seems important to Angie, and (though he's older) he's described as attractive.
Negatives to each? The way the narrator talks about Brayton is like waiting for the other shoes to drop. I don't know yet if those are her own projections/anxiety or foreshadowing. Brayton also lives a distance away and the two characters have totally separate lifestyles. Someone or both will have to compromise majorly for the relationship to work. Reggie exhibited a real red flag of possessiveness early in the book. He asked Angie to consult, realized she and the patient's dad knew one another when they were startled to see one another, then told Angie that consorting with a patient is against the rules. First off, dude, you asked her to be there. She didn't know who it was, she didn't volunteer. She was asked. Then he got weirdly clingy afterwards, leaving the protagonist to worry about his unfounded jealousy. That's a yikes for me.
The romance between Angie and Brayton is abrupt. A one night stand, a chance encounter In a professional setting, and suddenly the future must involve the other person. At least with Reggie there is a built upon history.
The protagonist, Angie, drives me crazy. She comes across as naive despite the book trying to convince me otherwise. Reggie, I think, despite liking Angie, would probably agree with me. Along with naivety, she also has double standards in regards to her "rules". I will say that she seems to be hardworking in her job. I understand she feels let down by her father and believes she is somehow responsible for the fallout of his actions, but she goes through the mental gymnastics of the situation selfishly.
"All I hear is jealousy in his voice, but I know he believes it's different." (Angie, pg 130). It literally is different. Reggie went behind her back to diagnose a patient. She went behind his back to sleep with said patient's dad. Trying to compare those two situations is ridiculous and I can't understand how Angie feels justified with the belief that the two situations are equal.
Honestly, even with his flaws, Reggie is the only character I consistently understand. Reggie and Angie's dad. Brayton, I guess, didn't really have a personality to me or worth remembering. He didn't really seem like a romantic lead. He seemed more like a side character. He wasn't bad, he just didn't seem to have a real personality to him.
END SPOILERS!!!
After finishing the book, my final opinion is this: I didn't enjoy reading this book. I didn't believe it. I didn't believe the characters for the most part. If someone is more interested in the plot of a book than the characters, you might find enjoyment with this book.
This is a 3.5 for me. Was it extremely well-written? Absolutely. Was the story interesting? Sure. Was it exciting/romantic/sexy/engrossing? Ehh, that's where you lose me a little bit. There's very little heat. It was a nice story but it was a little dry.
Angie came across as quite self-righteous, preachy, judgmental, and at times, kind of a hypocrite. Brayton was like a cutout for an ideal love interest... hot single dad who puts his son first and respects and dotes on his woman, and that's awesome, but I felt he was a little blah. Plus, he didn't seem to care much for boundaries, doing stuff like entering doctor's lounges and being overly familiar with Angie in front of colleagues.
My favorite scene was Angie's conversation with her dad in her office when he disproved all of her judgy assumptions. She was speaking of him the entire book as if he was some kind of villain that did something heinous, when it turned out to be anything but.
It was a nice story, but a little too 'textbook' for me. I might or might not check out other books in the series.
Dr. Angie has always followed the rules, they are there for a reason. Her father broke the rules and it cost him his career. She has always kept her private and professional life separate, so much so that she goes to bars on the other side of town from the hospital. Her life has been compartmentalized until one night she meets him, the sexy stranger, she cannot stop thinking about him. When the ER doctor asks her to consult on a case, she did not expect to see the man from last night with his seventeen year old son.
When her two worlds come together, will she risk her profession for her private life? This is a woman who has kept herself closed off from an adult relationship, she meets a really good man who has sacrificed everything for his son’s needs. The two of them click, but will whatever is medically wrong with his son interfere with the budding relationship?.
I received an Advance Readers Copy of this book with no obligation to write a review.
This book is part of a multi author interconnected series revolving around one hospital. Each book can be read as a standalone however some of the characters overlap throughout the series. The books range from clean to mature depending on language and steam levels. This book does contain some curse words and innuendos. It is a closed door/fade to black on steam. Between her gender, race, and the trouble her father got into she feels like she has to be extremely careful with the rules of the hospital and personal. No dating period. All socializing is either work related or done where no one from the hospital will go. Getting involved with a patient's father? His son has a chance at the draft as a high school player. Getting injured right before the draft could ruin his chances. What they discover could be even worse. Will they figure out what is going on and be able to fix it? What risks are involved?
I enjoyed this romance story. This is a new author for me which I enjoyed how he brought the story to life with his writing style as well as his attention to details. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future. This is a well written story that has characters that pull you into the story from the beginning. They are connectable and kept me coming back for more. This is a story about Angie and what happens when her personal and professional lives collide. You don't want to miss what happens to her. I enjoyed her character and what she brought to the story. She is a strong character that made the story for me. I enjoyed the growth of the plot as well as the characters throughout the story. This is a great story that is worth the pick up for sure. I highly recommend this book.
When Angie approaches a sexy stranger at a bar they spend one steamy evening together with neither of them expecting to see the other again. Fate had other ideas when his son is brought into the hospital where she is a doctor, and he becomes her patient, and their previous night together is only one of the challenges they must face.
One night was not enough for Brayton however he was both pleased and surprised to see Angie at the hospital. He is a single father who has dedicated his entire life to give his son the best life he can. The chemistry between them is intense and he isn’t about to let her walk out of his life for a second time.
Both Angie and Brayton are good people who always try to make the best decisions that they can. The physical chemistry between them is hot but it is the emotional connection that makes their relationship so special.
This book gripped me from the beginning and was so well written I was invested in these characters immediately. Angie’s character was amazing because she was strong, independent, had compassion, yet she knew what she wanted and would go for it. She took her career extremely serious and wouldn’t let anything hurt it. When her one night stand shows up at her work she doesn’t know what to make of it but she is the epitome of professional and carries on. With so much that happens and the intense chemistry that they share it’s hard for them to deny something is going on but they need to remain professional. This story was emotional and beautiful, will definitely pull on your heart. Such a great story !
This is a fantastic addition to this amazing series and is Angie and Brayton’s journey. Angie is strong, independent, and compassionate and she is an orthopaedic doctor, and she keeps her profession and private lives strictly separate. When Angie has a one-night stand, she is taken aback when Brayton arrives in her hospital. Brayton is a single dad to a teenage son who is at the top of the baseball drafts list, but he has a rare disease which might derail all his dreams, and he will understandably do whatever he has to for his son. This is a beautifully written story which has undeniable chemistry, challenges, emotions, conflict, and love, which leads to a heartfelt and compelling page turner. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
Mel Walker penned a perfect addition to this series, and I loved how he gave us a female doctor to boot. Angie is one of those girls who has learned that breaking rules can come at great cost to those who go rogue, so these days, she follows every last rule in front of her. However, she never saw Brayton coming, or the effect he would have on her convictions. This story hijacked all my attention from the moment I opened it up, and like the previous books, I wanted so much more because it was so good. I don't want to get into a lot of details since it's a short(ish) read, so y'all should just hit those one click buttons to experience all the medical goodness for yourselves! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
This was a 4.5⭐️ read What a great read. This book was heartfelt and engaging. Angie and Brayton had amazing chemistry, but finding out he was the father of her patient Floyd sends Angie into a spin with her follow every rule attitude. Angie loves what she does but doesn’t want to give up her chance at finally finding love. The way the story is written shows Angie’s conflict with the need to do her job but also put herself first for once. Brayton is very understanding and is a rock for the very career focussed Angie. Well written , wonderful characters, great story. Must read.
Mel Walker is a new author to me but this story won’t be my last.
First, the storyline and characters were relatable. Definitive research was completed and relayed in a manner that was understandable and had me feeling for the situation and characters.
Angie and Brayton had chemistry. It was something I could feel. But their situation was one that was all to easy to succumb to. Angie was a strong heroine and her efforts were driven and made her even more amazing. With the world today, her compassion, even in a book, still resonates. Her turmoil fueled her. And Brayton, just yes lol.
Take a moment and settle in for a wonderful story.
Angie has lived her entire life abiding by the rules. No matter what the circumstances, there are rules to abide by. She can feel everyone’s eyes on her just waiting for the rule she’s going to break simply because of who she is related to.
Reggie and Floyd have lived by the rules of life, worked hard and not it could all go up in smoke through no fault of their own. 1 little pop and their dreams could go away forever!
Doctor Fix-it is one of the books in the Doctors of Eastport General series. Pull up a chair, relax and enjoy the journey through these physicians’ romantic lives.
Brayton Patterson is just a man in a bar that accepts a drink from a pretty lady, which turns into a one night stand.
Unbeknownst to Brayton, until the following day is that his one night stand is now Dr. Angie Carmichael, the orthopedic doctor in the Eastport General Hospital that Braylon’s son, Floyd is admitted to after a minor injury.
There are patient, doctor relationships at work, and peer doctor tension/rivalry, medical ethics, and professional sports ethics as well. The story is full of drama, anxiety, and yet the main characters find their happy ending
I absolutely loved this story! Mel Walker is a new to me author and I will definitely be checking out more titles from them.
Angie and Brayton were so good together! They started out as one thing but then fate intervened. I loved Brayton's look on everything. He was so optimistic and happy.
Angie was so worried about the rules and tended to follow them precisely. She genuinely loved her patients.
This book brought out so many different emotions for me! This was such a good read and I can't wait to read more from this author!
Doctor Fix-it is completely unputdownable! It’s flawlessly written, heartfelt, heartwarming, with engaging and compassionate characters, and a captivating storyline. Angie and Brayton pull you right into the story and the chemistry between them is undeniable with every turn of the page. I adored every single page of this book and highly recommend you read it for yourself, you’ll be happy you did!
This is a well written book with strong characters and an interesting storyline. The author brings a beautifully written story with tons of emotions. He does a great job painting his scenes and moves the story fluidly with his descriptive and detailed scenes. I was glued to the pages reading and would recommend this book.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
This is the 4th book I've read written by Mel Walker; I can’t wait to read more of her books.
This is part of the Doctors of Eastport General Series; it is a stand-alone book. The story is about Angie & Braydon; she’s a doctor that keeps her personal life and professional life separate. They meet and have a one night stand, later he shows up at the hospital as a patient.
I received a free copy of this book via booksprout and I’m voluntarily leaving a review.
This is a good story that has a twist of opposites attract. Angie is a rule follower to the point that it makes her serious and hard to see the sunshine. Brayton take a positive outlook on live and that his smile seems to be permanent.
Together they will take you on an emotional ride that will warm your heart and have you melting in your seat.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
What a great read. Angie takes one night of no strings attached a month. She's a Doctor who puts her work above anything else. But little does she know Brayton is going to flip her world on it's axis.
I really enjoyed this book. Great characters, enjoyable realistic plot. Strong minded Lady and irresistible hunk.
