Longest slow burn I've ever read. It started out pretty mid with Columbus, though i'm not sure why he was mentioned in the first place when they just forgot about him and didn't even kill him off. Then we get introduced to Washington who has a really minor role despite all the hype. Suddenly it gets good with Andrew Jackson and Henry Clay which I thought was going to be a nice enemies to lovers but that story line just gets dropped. The liberation and war arc is actually pretty interesting but it was really short. Then we get into the whole business wars which had the potential to be a romance filled with all the cute tropes but it just payed attention to the boring political and entrepreneurial moves. Dropped it about there because 438 pages in and i'm still not seeing any romance. Where is the enemies to lovers? The sharing a bed? Not even a coffee shop AU? The whole King George part could've had the best royalty romance story line. They couldn't even take the time to throw in a misunderstood character trope. Overall this was unnecessarily drawn out and the plots/characters jumped around too much to figure out who to ship.
i tried to read it. i really did. i did my best to romanticize the nightly study sessions with fancy post-it notes, pastel highlighters and tons of spotify playlists, but nothing worked. the first 1/3 of the book could basically be summed up by listening to the hamilton s0undtrack and you'll be damn sure that thats exactly what i did. 0/10 for the slow burn enemies to lovers--just as the tensions between hamilton and jefferson seemed to peak, they were both dropped from the storyline with no explanation. who lives who dies who tells your story my ASS. everything after 1810 just went downhill. my hopes for another enemies to lovers with henry clay and andrew jackson was renewed and stomped out once more within 10 pages. and where is the godforsaken one bed trope? business CEO AU? nope. nothing. nada. overall, the storyline was unclear and mostly unresolved. 1/10 (unless the collegeboard wants to agree to give me a 5 on my exam, in which instance i will certainly rescind my poor review).
update: i just finished the exam and lowk that was so easy i think i got a 5 (not me calculating the minimum score on albert.io to get a 5) but I DIDNT FINISH MY LEQ BUT I DIDNT LAST YEAR EITHER ON AP WORLD AND STILL GOT A 5 SO LETS HOPE 🙏🙏
update #2: nvm im overthinking but probably at least a 4
im so cooked we've only done 2 dbqs and 2 leqs ALL YEAR MY TEACHER SUCKSSHDGGYEID AND ITS FOUR DAYS UNTIL THE EXAM AND I JUST STARTED STUDYING and i have barely touched this book all year, there are like two highlights in the whole thing and thats it so HEIMLER HERE I COME. no but also this is so bad bc idk why i have no sense of urgency to study like i genuinely don't care as much as i should and only will two mins before the test. need to keep the 5 streak alive from last year but thats not gonna happen bc of physics. i miss ap world sm bc all u had to know was the big picture NOT EVERY SINGLE DETAIILLLLLLLL OH MY GDOIHEOFOB chester a arthur IDK WHO U ARE AND I DONT CARE BRO
I don’t care what anyone says, this book slayed. Would the country survive? Would it not? The tension was insane. Maybe it was a little slow, but that was to build the suspense. The ending was a sad, but I think it was a great insight into the importance of ur mom.
dnf at around chapter 25, hence i am winging units 8 and 9. wish me luck for friday :D it has been a [insert derogatory term here] ride with this book over this past year!
I'd give this book a zero but since that's not possible, it gets a one.
Ummm,,, what was this?? Where was the enemies to lovers?? One bed trope?? academic rivals to lovers??? heck I'd even go for a love triangle (pls I'm desperate). Seriously where was the spice?? That Cristopher Columbus guy was so random. Why was he there he did nothing to the plot. Also, choose a plot. The story was all over the place. We went from a war arc, to boring filler (who cares about the constitution), to another war arc???? There were too many characters and none of them had any shipping potential. That George Washington guy could have been a great protagonist but instead we had to RUIN his arc by killing him off in chapter 3. 0/5 do not recommend this book (unless you have insomnia and need help sleeping).
in my personal opinion this book was basically unreadable. so many characters with no follow through on the plotline. some parts were a little funny ngl but they were far and few between. really has faith in FDR and then he, y'know, put Japanese people in camps so really let that down. what an ass fr. really enjoyed Jackson, he was a dick but an interesting one. could not stand McCarthy he was such an attention whore. anyways, one of my favorite hate reads.
I tried to read it, I really did, but I couldn’t get through it. I actually found myself more willing to read a dictionary, A DICTIONARY, just to find a little more “exhilaration” in my life (learned that from the dictionary). Overall, this book gave me terrible migraines and awful self-loathing. I would not recommend this book on my worst enemy.
I was a little hesitant starting off this book when it began with Christopher Columbus but luckily it picked up during the Revolutionary War. Washington was such a complex character! Albeit, the way the author killed him off was in my opinion out of left field and unnecessary. The author could have also implemented some romance into the plot, but I guess I can handle it being omitted (although the reason for this is beyond my understanding). Furthermore, I feel as if there was no main or consistent character, everyone that was introduced to the reader just kept getting killed off, which I'm still not sure if I enjoyed this aspect of it or not. The tension in this kept me on the edge of my seat. The plot twists in this book left me in shock every time. The ending was a little disappointing, with Trump and Covid, and I feel almost as if the book wasn't finished completely before publishing. In conclusion, this was a great YA novel that all ages would enjoy!
there was so much potential with this book - there could've been enemies to lovers, any trope. the characters and plot jumped everywhere, and it was basically a large collection of people arguing/fighting over everything and anything. we had some interesting subplots, and there were some pretty cool characters, but it didn't make up for the slew of random supreme court decisions and acts. it took every ounce of strength in my body not to dnf it. there were too many johns and filler characters who disappeared with no expansion whatsoever. 1/5 because at least it helped me study.
Would’ve dnf’d it but my teacher kept assigning quizzes with extremely specific questions from the book 😭 Longest slow burn just for it to be anticlimactic at the end. 1/5
now i have to say this is a long and gruesome story but I was very entertained. the gay agenda is through the entire thing even if others disagree. but the tension between the colonists and Britain is sooo hot, and the economics and the Great Depression really had me in a chokehold like man just kiss already. i think everyone should know about our US history.
I’m only about halfway through this book, currently on chapter 17 but good God these authors really need to improve their plots. Honestly, none of it has been very engaging, and the whole section on the beginning of America?? Are we really just going to stand by and let them steal the plot of Hamilton?? I’m hoping it’ll get better as the stories start going international, but all of my favorites were killed off very quickly, so it’s not like I have anyone to root for.
I would have given it one star, but I added one because I have learned a little bit from this story. The authors seem to be very well researched, but they really need to learn how to write a good plot.
