The Rainier Series #3

In the Heart of Paradise

Rate this book
The Rainier Series continues with book 3!

When Anna discovers she’s with child, it doesn’t feel as wonderful as she’d imagined. She quickly feels trapped between the doctors blaming her for her morning sickness, older women wanting her to stay home, and very real risks to her baby. She’s caught between protecting her family and living a fulfilling life—an impossible choice.

Anna’s new friend Elizabeth is reeling from an unexpected loss, and she believes her nervous tendencies are getting worse. Her thoughts have always been strange, and the threat of ending up in an insane asylum is never far from her mind. When she meets a handsome stranger on the train, she wonders if she can simply keep her “fits of mania” to herself. But when she develops a phobia, she’ll have to face her most dreaded fear to save what she loves most.

In the Heart of Paradise is a deeply hopeful story that explores themes of mental health and motherhood in the nineteenth century.

In the Heart of Paradise is Jamie McGillen’s third book in the Rainier series and I absolutely enjoyed every page of this heartfelt and heartwarming story.

Though set during the nineteenth century, the story themes could not be more timely, and explores issues on women’s roles and expectations, mental health, phobias, traumas, and motherhood, through the point of views of these strong young women, Anna and Elizabeth. I really enjoyed the story arc of Elizabeth’s as a budding student nurse, while also dealing with her fears and anxieties.

This is such a wonderful story set in the backdrop of the beautiful nature of Washington state, and of course Mount Rainier. The writing is engaging, and stories thought provoking - perfect for historical fiction and young adult readers.

I know I’m behind in reviews, but I’m skipping to a book I finished today. The pub day is November 2nd (Tuesday) and I just had to put it on your radar if it hasn’t been already.

In the Heart of Paradise by @jamiemcgillen is the third book in the Rainier Series. An amazing historical fiction series set in the 1890 and follows some truly strong women! Anna is our main character that is threaded throughout the series. In the first book she’s determined to summit Mount Rainier. The other women are her friends.

❤️Review❤️

I couldn’t contain my excitement when Jamie asked me to be a part of her launch team for In the Heart of Paradise. I’ve missed this Seattle setting and women. If you’ve never thought historical fiction can be a page turner, you haven’t tried this series. Every book I can’t put down and fly through. They are so well researched and make this time period easily accessible if you’re intimidated by the genre. I can never speak highly enough about this series. Anna continues to grow and develop in every stage of early adulthood she’s experienced in the books. The women have realistic feelings and as the reader it’s great to watch them experience and work through them. I’ve heard this series is going to be put on hold while she writes a new book or two, which means it’s the perfect time to catch up and start this series if you haven’t already! It’s going to be so hard knowing I have to wait for the next books in this series, but I’m really excited to see what comes out next.

5 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

These amazing characters, you'll fall in love with. A wonderfully painted time period that will make you wish you were exploring right beside Anna and Ben, as well as their friends. I am so in love with this whole series and this book. This book explores Anna as she finds out she is pregnant and throughout her pregnancy, her struggles with the timing and having to be still for a portion of her pregnancy. It also follows Elizabeth and explores what it is like to have fears and anxieties as a woman in the nineteenth century.

Although this book is written as historical fiction, in the nineteenth century, there are so many prominent issues that women face today that are written into this book. The whole series is wonderful and I love the adventurous spirit that we see in Anna and the courage she shows throughout the series.

This is a book that you need to read, it will make you want to face those fears your holding onto. So grab your hiking boots, lace them up, tie them tight, and prepare for the adventure that awaits you in the Mt. Rainer series by Jamie McGillen.

Jamie McGillen does it again! In the Heart of Paradise transports readers back to the shadow of Mount Rainer and once again I am in awe of her majesty, both mountain and author.

In this third installment of The Rainier Series, we revisit Anna, she’s discovered she is pregnant and is apprehensive about the timing, and her overall well-being.
Anna’s new friend, Elizabeth, has her own goals, but her acute overwhelming anxiety threatens her dreams of a productive, happy future.

This page-turning, heart-felt historical fiction set on the backdrop of Mount Rainer explores themes of motherhood and mental health in the early nineteenth century. This well-researched narrative that features determined female protagonists explores topics that are very much relevant today. It’s a novel that will fill your heart with hope and make you yearn to explore the outdoors.

This book is perfect for readers who enjoy:
•feel-good historical fiction with themes that are relevant today
•beautifully depicted scenes set in nature that will inspire you to play more outdoors
•quick paced adventure with twists that will leave you breathless

Reading this felt like coming home, perfectly paired with a cinnamon stick in your coffee and a plate of warm chocolate crinkles. If you are new to this series be sure to check out with In Sight of the Mountain, the first book in the Rainier series. Each book continues from the next, and I’m happy to report that In The Heart of Paradise is my favorite.

The third book in the Rainier Series touches on a handful of important topics. When Anna finds out she is going to have a child, she is confronted with boundaries and limitations that she wasn't expecting. Anna is worried that becoming a mother might change her life in ways she isn't sure she's comfortable with. Meanwhile, Anna's new friend Elizabeth struggles with her own fears. Elizabeth seems to have what today we would consider anxiety and possibly OCD. However, at the time, even the slightest hint of a mental health issue could get a woman sent to the insane asylum, and so Elizabeth feels she must hide her "strange behaviors."

Jamie McGillen approaches mental health in such a sensitive, compassionate, and realistic way, that the reader can fully empathize with Elizabeth. I would recommend this series to anyone who wants to explore difficult topics for women at the time, and also topics that still affect women today, in a way that is not too overwhelming or heavy-handed. Staying true to the series, In the Heart of Paradise is appropriate for all young adult readers, including teenagers, while sparking important discussions surrounding societal expectations for women as well as mental health. And of course, Jamie McGillen once again gives us sweet, young love that is oh so precious!

Thank you to the author for providing me an Advanced Review Copy!

Title: In The Heart of Paradise
Author: Jamie McGillen
Publisher: Self-published indie author
www.jamiemcgillen.com
Genre: Historical Fiction

In the Heart of Paradise was everything I had hoped for and more. It’s the third book in the ‘Rainier Series’ and reunites us with Anna and Ben Chambers. Anna is truly one of my favorite characters ever written and Anna & Ben together are #couplegoals.

Anna had already accomplished grand adventures and summiting mountains, but in this book she is finds herself with child and in for the biggest adventure yet. But, is she ready to settle down? Her body gives her warning signs early on in her pregnancy that maybe she should and she feels caught between protecting her family and living a fulfilling life on her terms. But maybe she can have both?

The other half of the book focuses on Anna’s new friend, Elizabeth. Elizabeth is a wonderfully written character that I think readers are really going to connect with. She struggles with nervous tendencies that have been getting worse as she’s explored becoming a nurse; inspired by her idol Florence Nightingale. She also begins courting a man and wonders how she will keep these “fits of mania” to herself and if he will want a girl like her if he knew the truth.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 In the Heart of Paradise at its core is about love. Love of a child. Love of caring for people. Love of your friends. Love of your family. Love of your town. The author does impeccable research with the time period details that she includes. I am swept away as if I am living in the early days of the late 1800s. It humbles me to appreciate what I have and makes me wonder if I could live with less. I highly recommend this book and series. I hope the author continues it someday. I would love a book focusing on the Anna’s good friend Heather and the Duwamish culture.

Thank you to the author for having me on her launch team!

I received a free copy of this book to review.

This was such a satisfying conclusion to a wonderful series! It was a joy following these characters through their trials and triumphs as they stretched and grew. In the Heart of Paradise (and the whole series) provides a meaningful look at a woman struggling with the expectations and roles of her gender. It provides a peek specifically into this time of history, but the struggles have applications for every time period as well.

The mental health representation woven throughout the story was insightful and refreshing to see. This whole series fits that sweet spot of being uplifting and engaging quick reads while still including deeper topics.

Anna’s profound love of nature makes me want to go exploring outside now. I don’t feel that same deep longing in my soul that she does, but enjoyed being in her perspective and having added appreciation for the beauty around me.

I could see fans of shows like Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman enjoying this series as they both carry a similar feel and topics.

"Welcome to the clouds, my friends."

My love for historical fiction began in elementary school when I read Sarah Plain and Tall by Patricia Maclachlan and the American Girl books. Jamie McGillen's Rainier Series was nostalgic for me, reminding me of the sweet, wholesome historical fiction books that ignited a love for this special genre.

I enjoyed Anna and Ben's story as they navigated life through Anna's pregnancy. Elizabeth's storyline was my favorite, as we got to examine mental health and how it affected women in the late 1800s.

What I appreciate about this series is that they are entertaining and clean. I read a lot of books that are not appropriate for young readers, so it's nice to have something enjoyable that I can also share with my kids and recommend to people who dont want to read some of the heavier, darker material that I tend to read.

Another thing I love about these books it is all of the amazing historical information. These books are perfect for book clubs or classrooms (homeschool parents, I'm talking to you) because they have so many topics worthy of discussion and further research. I went down so many rabbit holes looking up more information about some of the things that are discussed in this series.

I am honored to have been part of Jamie's launch team for these books. I loved getting to know her a little bit as I followed her on Instagram and as I read her beautiful books, over the last couple of years. ❤

I loved this latest addition to this series!

Anna is now having her first child. She should be feeling joyful all around but has creeping doubts. She had things happen early in her pregnancy that her doctor BLAMES her for (which is an utterly ridiculous thing). She is ridiculed by some for still wanting to climb while she's pregnant.

We also get Elizabeth's perspective. She has what we know now as a mental health issue but she's also ridiculed for it. I always thought it was sad back then that when someone had a mental health issue, they were just thrown into some asylum. No help for them at all, doctors just think that if they rest "it will go away".

I was so happy and proud when each of these women eventually knew ( with some love and help from others) and ultimately decided to do what they needed to do on their own to get through the trials they have.

Third book in the series and “In The Heart in Parisdise” is my favorite one thus far. I love when I’m reading a book and I can relate to it; and there was more than one thing that I found relatable in the book. It touches a lot of great topics motherhood, mental health and women breaking social norms. I really enjoyed getting to see Emily’s point of view and getting to see what she was up to after the big change of events that happened at the end of book two “In Light of the summit”. Historical fiction fans (or even if you’re not a historical fiction fan, this book will turn you into one) and you won’t be able to put it down.

This may be my favorite book in the series yet! Though set in the 1890s, the themes in the novel are so relevant to our world today. Anna is with child and is trying to determine a balance between becoming a mother and being adventurous. During that time frame, women had specific roles they were expected to follow and I applaud Anna for not backing down from being her own person. Anna's friend Elizabeth also has her challenges and I loved seeing her story unfold. She struggles from what she calls, "doubting disease" which is representative of OCD in today's world. The way Jamie spoke about Elizabeth's challenges and accomplishments with managing her mental illness was remarkable. OCD is a mental illness that unfortunately took my father from this world and I really liked seeing it so well represented in this novel. Mental health is health! Not only was this book packed full of important themes in our world, but the story was also well written, heartwarming, and was a page turner. In the Heart of Paradise is jammed packed with strong women which in the 1890s is so awesome to see! I love Jamie's writing and can't wait to read her other books! Also, can the cover be any more beautiful?!

In The Heart of Paradise by Jamie McGillen

Thank you to the author for this gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.

This was the third book in the Rainer Series by Jamie McGillen. In this story we catch up with Anna and Ben again as they begin to navigate becoming parents.

I loved catching up with the characters and visiting the PNW in the 1890s. Anna’s strong tenacity and will to achieve her goals even after she becomes a mother made me love her character even more. This was a wonderful ending to a great series.

This book was sent to me in exchange for my honest opinion. Many thanks to Jamie for sending this my way
Our journey around Mt Rainier with Anna and Ben continues with this third installment where Anna faces what could be her greatest challenge yet. I loved reading all the support Anna had from her husband, grandparents, brother, Emily, Elizabeth and Heather. I am so sad to think that this may have been our final journey with these wonderful, loveable characters. It's been such an adventure living their lives through the pages of Jamie's incredible writing. I absolutely loved the epilogue. It was such a beautiful way to see where their lives go!
You can really tell that Jamie does her research and puts everything she has into her writing.

Hands down my favorite series ever! Jamie just has a way of capturing the beauty of nature and turning it into the most elegant of words. She makes you feel like you're there and can each out and touch, feel, and smell the things by the way she describes them.

This book just gave me all the feels. She gives so much detail to each character and place. The character development is great she uses the same characters and does not introduce too many so it does not seem overwhelming or try remembering who is who.

Also, Jamie does a great job at making sure to wrap up every characters story so you don't finish the book feeling like it wasn't complete.

I say this every time I read one of her books but, I absolutely can not wait until she writes another.

Put on your boots and hike up your petticoats to join Anna on the next installment of the Rainier Series: In the Heart of Paradise. Trust me, you’re going to also want to bring your hiking poles because you’re going to fall in love with this latest story.

In the Heart of Paradise picks up right where we left of in, In the Light of the Summit continuing to follow Anna and Ben on their journey from newlyweds to parenthood. This time around we get to delve a little bit more into the life of Elizabeth and her struggles with her mental health.

One of my favorite things about the Rainier Series is how the author includes every little detail to immerse you into not only the characters individual stories but she also gives you a little scope into the setting of Mount Rainier and Washington State from the 1900s.

In the Heart of Paradise is by far my favorite so far out of the three part series. Perfectly executed.

I love this series! I've been following Anna Gallagher since the first book and loving her journey all the way through. She is a true representation of the women who paved the path of mountaineering and it is truly beautiful.

Jamie does a wonderful and beautiful job bringing these characters to life and 3 books and being able to connect not only with them but as well to Mt Rainier itself. In a way the mountain is a character that pulls you in with her beauty. If you haven't visited Mt Rainier, you need to because she truly is a beautiful sight to see. The appreciation of nature and her beauty is perfectly written and the bravery of Anna is purely inspirational.

In this third book, I believe is a great conclusion to the series because it leaves you feeling grateful, hopeful, and inspired. Here we follow Anna as she learns that she is with child and her concerns about being pregnant and a new mom. Of course everything that she is feeling is normal but it still doesn't stop her for having the thoughts and feelings she has. I never felt more connected to Anna than I do now because I'm currently pregnant with my second and I still have my worries just like her. I was cheering her on throughout the book because she still kept fighting and standing up for herself regardless of her being pregnant and soon to be a mother.

Although Anna is the main girl in this series, we also follow another young lady, Elizabeth. If you've read the previous book you already know who she is. But in this book we discover a bit more about her and her ambitions. We see a different kind of strength in her as she overcomes her inner "demons". What I love most about this series is how Jamie writes about the different women in Anna's life and what they go through and how they get through it. Them having the realization that just because they are women it shouldn't stop them to pursue what they want. Realizing that the time is changing and women shouldn't be confined to just being what society tells them to be.

The epilogue brought me joy because I love sharing the outdoors with my son and real soon I'll get to continue sharing that with our daughter.

I'd recommend this series to anyone and everyone whether they enjoy historical fiction/strong woman protagonist or not.

I found Jamie McGillen’s Rainer series a little over a year ago when @mommaleighellensbooknook chose her first book In Sight of The Mountain for a book club pick. I have been hooked ever since. This series has brought me back to my love of series. I have fallen in love with the characters, all of them are so well developed. I love Anna and her determination, I love how Ben loves and supports his wife. I love watching the characters grow and develop of the years. In this third book we see Anna and Ben become parents, we walk through Anna’s pregnancy. We also are able to witness Elizabeth’s journey as she hopes to become a nurse, but struggles with OCD, I could relate to Elizabeth’s character on so many levels. I don’t want to give anything away, but i would say, get this book!! Overall this series is clean and such a great story of strong women. I recommend to book and the whole series to anyone that loves historical fiction or just a well written book!

In the Heart of Paradise by Jamie McGillen is the third book in The Ranier Series, which are books primarily about Anna, but in the later books she develops other characters further and tells their stories. These are young women in the late 1800’s in the Western territory near Mount Rainier. They each have their own unique story of life in that era. The author uses the stories to bring awareness to the times and raises awareness of issues like the treatment of the indigenous people, the treatment of women, and the struggles to live in that location.
.
I have enjoyed reading the story line of these brave courageous women along with their friendships and romantic interests. I think these would be particularly enjoyable to pre-teen and teen girls. The series would make a wonderful Christmas gift! That said, In The Heart of Paradise can be read as a stand alone book.
.
I recommend this to readers of Historical Fiction and sweet romance.

The third in The Rainer Series did not disappoint! Absolutely adored the storyline of this book surrounding topics of new motherhood & mental health. I’m so glad we continue to follow Anna’s love & devotion, not just for her growing family, but also of her beloved Mount Rainer. An added bonus was getting to explore more of Elizabeth’s story & hopes & dreams. I really enjoyed the chapters alternating between the two strong female leads & how their stories connected.

This book was perfectly balanced with female empowerment, family, friendship, adventure, suspense & clean romance. The message throughout the storyline is important for women of all ages. We can do anything we put our minds to no matter what obstacles are in our way, hard work & determination will always persevere!

Let’s also pause for a second in honor of that epilogue! 🥺😍 My heart was swelling! I really hope we get to see more from these characters & their continuing adventures in the future! 🤞🏼

Big thank you to the wonderful author, Jamie McGillen for the opportunity to read & review a copy of this amazing book!

The series comes to an end with the stories of Anna and Elizabeth becoming friends. Anna has been one of the main characters and now she is with child and has many thoughts and has to find balance between been a mother and still be adventurous and Elizabeth has a condition that worries her of getting crazy she has OCD and she is just afraid of being locked in a crazy house. I just love their friendship and how they go thru events together and how their friendship grows. The series is just beautiful from begging of book 1 to book 3 if you love historical fiction.

This book is absolutely amazing. Such beautiful descriptions of the mountain, the characters, the setting in general. I got “When Calls the Heart” vibes and I absolutely love that show so this book was definitely a five star read for me. The historical detail…the wording and descriptions was perfect. It was very obvious that Jamie took her time to research before writing and I absolutely love it. She made the story well worth reading and that speaks volumes especially because I have never been a fan of historical fiction. I cannot wait for more books by her.

💜HAPPY PUB DAY!!!! 💜

This book is a beautifully written historical fiction novel, the third in the series, and it is not to be missed.

We are thrilled to be a part of the launch team for this new book! We love the descriptive writing, every detail meticulously researched and beautifully crafted with the utmost care.

This series follows Anna Gallagher as she navigates her options in the late 19th century, deals with the challenges presented to her as she desires to summit Mount Rainier and the varied experiences that come out of her true desire to follow her heart which longs for adventure and discovery. Along the way, we meet a wonderful group of characters, some of whom are truly endearing.

Each book in the series includes Anna, though the second book shares the story of Anna’s friend Emily and this third installment is also the story of Anna’s new friend Elizabeth. Anna discovers she is pregnant and has mixed feelings- excitement over being a mother while struggling with the challenges that come with pregnancy in that time period. Elizabeth and Anna get even closer as Elizabeth is called to help Anna deliver her child and Elizabeth must face her fears, which prepares her for another event near the end of the book that also tests her. Elizabeth experiences some mental health issues and the way they are portrayed and handled here is excellent.

We have nothing but love for these books and if you haven’t read them yet- now is the perfect time! Cozy up with a blanket, a mug full of whatever warm drink you prefer, and binge these books! You won’t regret it!

I’m so excited to be a part of Jamie McGillen’s launch team! In The Heart of Paradise is out now! Book three in the Rainier series does not disappoint but I will caution, if you haven’t read the first two, start at book one, each book builds on the last.

In The Heart of Paradise finds Anna pregnant with her first child and like most expectant parents she is fearful of how a baby will affect her life and her goals. The other POV is Elizabeth, Anna’s new friend. Elizabeth is consumed with doubt and anxiety, and worries that one day she may be institutionalized. She struggles with hiding her anxieties and also making connections and following her dream of becoming a nurse.

What I liked: McGillen handles Anna and Elizabeth’s worries well. Anna becoming a parent and the fears associated with that, felt very believable. Especially in her time period, a child could drastically change her goals. Anna doesn’t give up her goals just because she’s a mom.

Elizabeth first appeared in book two and seemed shy/standoffish but in book three she starts to shine and her behavior in book two is explained. I liked that while she isn’t magically cured, she finds acceptance with others and ways to cope.

What didn’t work for me: Oscar’s storyline felt a little open to me and Peter’s arc tied up quickly.

Who should read it: Historical fiction fans looking for a story that focuses on the female perspective and friendships.

“Life is full of challenges, particularly for women. We struggle to overcome the circumstances of our lives, to achieve something better for ourselves and those we love.”
— In the Heart of Paradise by Jamie McGillen, from the Foreward by Richelle Marracino, MD

When it comes to Jamie’s books, you actually can judge the book by the cover! In the Heart of Paradise is just as beautiful a story as the delightful cover art, and almost as lovely as the sight of Mount Rainer on a clear Seattle day.

I had the privilege of reading this book while being pregnant and so felt more connected to Anna on her journey. It was a fantastic story that included some hiking, plenty of (delightfully clean) romance, a pinch of suspense, and of course, a happily ever after. Plus, an in depth look at another character, Elizabeth (who debuted in book 2 - In Light of the Summit). Elizabeth felt so real to me, I just wanted to sit down to coffee with her. I can’t wait to see what Jamie writes next!

“You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, ‘If I have lived through this horror, I can take the next thing that comes along.’ You must do the thing you think you cannot do.”—Eleanor Roosevelt
— In the Heart of Paradise by Jamie McGillen

In the Heart of Paradise is the third book in the series and to understand the story you will want to have read In Sight of the Mountain and In Light of the Summit before enjoying this one.

This is the third book in of a YA historical romance series set in 1890s Seattle featuring an adventurous young mountaineer. We have read the first two with #mommaleighellensbookclub and loved them!

This story picks up right where the last one left off. This time around, Anna is married and pregnant worried about how becoming a mother might change things. She continues to be head strong and independent in a time when that was not encouraged for women. This book continues to look at societal limits on women and racial prejudice, as well as mental health.

We loved getting some closure on beloved characters as well as a look back at characters from previous books. A sweet story, quick read, and fun romp through history of a place I love.

Thank you to Jamie McGillen for the wonderful gifts and a copy of your new book In The Heart of Paradise. I am honored to be on the launch team.

I’ve read all three books in the Rainer series this year and I loved them all. This week I read the third book, In The Heart of Paradise. It centers around two young ladies, Anna and Elizabeth, living in Seattle around 1885. Each young lady is struggling with her feelings of what is expected of a woman in society and what is in her own heart. Both of the young ladies have to search inside themselves for inner strength and with the support from family and friends to find the courage they will need for their futures. If you are a fan of the Anne of Green Gables books you will love this series as well. I found this book a joy to read. I felt a sense of community, kindness and inspiration as I read. I loved In The Heart of Paradise and gave it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars. Even though the book is a YA book I recommend this book to all readers who love historical fiction with strong female characters.

I'm so sad that this may be the final book the The Rainier Series, but I'm so glad that I was made aware of these fabulous books by Jamie McGillen. I really enjoyed seeing how Anna didn't stop pursuing her dreams just because she was pregnant. I love her devotion and passion for mountain climbing and making it more acceptable for women to climb in that time period. I enjoyed hearing more about Elizabeth and how she was dealing with her own mental health issues and pursuing her dream of becoming a nurse. I love that these books have such strong female characters and include family, friendships, suspense and adventure. This series was so well written and I will keep my fingers crossed for more books in this series! 🤞
