Catch a Tiger by the Tail

Rate this book
Thomas Walsh knows the number one rule in the film industry. Don't get involved with the talent. But resisting the urge to take the big screen to the bedroom can be hell when the lead actor on the set looks good enough to eat...one slow lick at a time.

Peter Erickson's latest role as a gay man hits a little too close to home. He's still in the closet and secretly grieving the death of his lover. Then an enchanting production assistant catches his eye, and he's surprised by the instant attraction that stirs more than his wounded soul.

When the two men are caught on camera in a very intimate pose, both Thomas and Peter are afraid they've caught a tiger by the tail.

catch a tiger by the tail gabbi grey - Google Search

Catch a Tiger by the Tail is book one in the One Scoop or Two series by Gabbi Grey. This is my first book by this author. This is a sweet, insta love, age gap story with two men, neither of which have come out of the closet, but together, finally find the courage and the right person to come out for.

Thomas Walsh is twenty eight years old and is a production assistant for a movie company in Vancouver. He has worked hard for ten years and loves what he does. Ten years ago, he left Prince George and his family behind, along with a dark secret that haunts him still. Thomas has kept his preferences hidden from both his family and his co-workers in Vancouver. But, when filming was set to start on a new movie and the leading man arrived on set, everything changed.

“Something told me things were about to get a whole lot more complicated.”

Peter Erickson is forty two years old and is a sought after actor in both the U.S. and around the world. Peter had been in a long term relationship in Los Angeles but his partner had insisted that they remain a secret. Now, alone again, he figured at this late stage, he would never reveal his true self. But then he walked on the new movie set and saw the assistant. One look and Thomas made him want things he had long since given up on.

“You’re stunning in so many ways. But it’s your heart that calls to me.”

This was a quick, afternoon read that was sweet, sexy and also sad when you hear what both of these men have been through. I loved them together. I adore a sexy insta romance. For some reason, even though I enjoyed this, things didn’t seem to flow as easily as I might have liked. With that being said, I’m still glad I read it and will be thinking of these two for awhile.

re-read on 9 Sept 2022 - I started Solstice Surprise and needed the refresher. Glad I did, it was fun revisiting this one :)

A sweet, insta-love romance with a nice age-gap. There's some hurt/comfort on both sides too, which is nicely presented by Gabbi Grey. There are a few twists which kept Catch a Tiger by the Tail fresh and interesting.

This is the first novel I've read by Ms. Grey, and she has a unique quality to her writing. It's fun and flirty, and a pleasure to read.

Catch a Tiger by the Tail is one of those books that intrigued me immediately and consumed me throughout. This Gabbi Gray One Scoop or Two book is fabulous. I love it all!

Fun from the start, Thomas and Jason are perfect together. Thomas is a PA on a movie set who's dumb struck the first time he sees Jason, the movie star. Jason, oh how I adore Jason. He's a closeted actor who comes with a whole lot of baggage. His ex kept him firmly in the closet and he's never recovered from the pain.

Despite a 14 year age gap, Thomas and Jason can't fight their attraction to one another. Both men have their issues. Thomas is closeted due to his homophobic family, and Jason is still struggling with his past relationship. They also have to deal with outside forces that come with being famous, including the paparazzi.

This is an insta-love Hollywood romance. It's a story of sexual exploration, first times, and coming out. And I couldn't get enough of it.

The writing style flows well, and the storyline is pure delight. Told in alternating 1st person pov, the reader is easily brought into the character's minds and motivations.

Catch a Tiger by the Tail is a sweet and easy going read. This Gabbi Grey gem is angst free and completely heart-felt. These men and their whirlwind romance could be cheesy, but it's not. It's truly delightful!

Peter is still in the closet when his latest role is switched to that of a LGBTQ romance, which is a little too close to his life for comfort. However, while on the set, one of the PAs catches his eye and the rest is very short, insta-love history.

I liked this short and sweet story. It's not very realistic I'd imagine, but it's low on the angst and it's quite sweet. I like how patient and completely gentle Peter is with Thomas' relative inexperience, and the way they settle so well with each other. I wanted a bit more character and relationship development, something that spanned longer than a few days, but for what it is, it's an enjoyable read.

This was a fun and sweet insta love novella. Thomas and Peter are great together even though it is a little fast paced. I loved all the secondary characters, especially Cole. Loved the epilogue too.

If you're looking for a cute, quick and low angst fake relationship romance, I'd definitely recommend Catch A Tiger by the Tail.

This was a sweet, rather adorable and highly romantic book, and a quick read to boot. It's full on insta-love though, and that isn't really my thing. It took me a little while to believe in the connection between Thomas and Peter, especially with the age gap.

Let us start at the beginning though, where we meet Thomas Walsh, 28 years old and a production assistant in Vancouver (the Canada one). He left his home town and his family 10 years ago, together with a secret that still haunts him to some extent. He knows not to fall for the actors he comes in contact with, and has done pretty well for himself so far.

Enter Peter Erickson, 42 and famous, and still grieving after his long-term secret partner's death. He arrives on set for the new movie, and is told that instead of a female lead, he'll have a male counterpart playing the lead opposite him. After the initial shock, Peter seems to get over it pretty quickly and filming begins shortly thereafter. I did find it a bit odd that the director didn't really have the two leads read with each other ahead of time to see if there's chemistry, but I don't really know much about the film business so maybe that's how these things are done.

Peter doesn't feel a need to come out, especially after having hidden for so long at his late partner's insistence and the potential of ruining his career, and he's also not looking for anyone new. Except the young production assistant who introduces him to tiger tail ice cream, an abomination in my humble opinion (a combo of orange and licorice ice cream, yuck!) and some other things Peter hasn't really paid much attention to so far.

Their slowly developing romance is cast into the spotlight when they're photographed in what seems to be an intimate moment eating ice cream, and this is also where the author lost me for a while. Peter was initially described as not wanting to come out, but once the proverbial cat is out of the bag, he seems just fine with it, and there's not a whole lot of drama or angst. Thomas' secret is revealed, and Peter is very supportive. There isn't a ton of sex, but what we do have is nicely done and furthers the connection.

The book is almost harlequin-esque in its plot and writing, and obviously not very realistic, but it's certainly an enjoyable read for a lazy afternoon. Give it a try. Just skip the orange and licorice ice cream.

A picture is worth a thousand words. What happens when two closeted guys get outed innocently? They form a fake alliance and milk it for all it's worth.

New to me author Gabbi Grey penned a fairy tale of what if. What if A-lister Peter was suddenly opened to the possibility of living life openly, something that had evaded him for ten years. And what if the younger Thomas was finally able to fulfill a fantasy. Now the answer to the question was: what happened when the director yelled, CUT? An out for you book that concluded happily.

I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion from the author through Booksprout.

Not my favorite book by Gabbi Grey. I didn’t get why they pretended it was a fake relationship for all of like one day. I going to read the next book in this series in hopes that it will flesh out the story more. I just didn’t feel like I got to know either Thomas or Peter very well. Let’s hope the next story fixes that.

Catch a Tiger by the Tail is an enjoyable double coming out novella featuring a May-December pairing. This one had that short story feel to it- a basic romance with likable characters and a speedier pace. While the brevity meant parts of the relationship and characters were a bit underdeveloped, I still really enjoyed the story.

The set-up to Catch a Tiger by the Tail is interesting. There are a number of characters introduced in quick succession and I had a bit of trouble discerning who to focus on initially. However, once Peter and Thomas moved to center stage, I was undoubtedly rooting for their happily-ever-after. Though neither man was out, the book didn’t spend too much time focusing on this plotline nor the emotions attached to coming out. Instead, Catch a Tiger by the Tail really explored a relationship’s starting point after the men entered into a fake relationship for publicity’s sake.
I’d recommend To Catch a Tiger by the Tail to fans of low angst romances, especially readers who like pairings between celebs and non-celebs. If you’re looking for a quick, enjoyable read that keeps the conflict to a minimum, this is a great pick!

Cute, low-angst, insta-love.
This was a short, insta-love story. Peter and Thomas actually go from closeted acquaintances to all-in, family-ed up in less than three weeks. Not really a fake relationship trope, because they actually start dating for real, even though they do so publicly.
I maybe would have preferred the book to delve a bit deeper into both character’s feelings (especially their grief over losing their loved ones), as it can result a bit “superficial” sometimes. Nonetheless, it’s very pleasant and enjoyable, and Michael Dean’s narration made it a very good listen!

Catch a Tiger by the Tail: This story was fantastic. I loved all the characters and how they bounce off of each other. The dialog was amazing throughout the story. It was a great romance that happened at the right time of the story is how it should happen in a relationship. It had a lot of emotions throughout. I really enjoyed it.

The entertainment business is certainly 'entertaining.' On screen and off.
The set production assistants and directors are just as amazing as the actors.
When a plot change brings a person's sexuality out of the closet, it can make a career or ruin it.
It also can guarantee a HEA!

This is a wonderful story with chuckles, tears and a great tour of Vancouver, Canada.

A Joyfully Jay review.

2.5 stars

For me, there was a LOT of this plot that didn’t seem to make sense. Both Peter and Thomas are fiercely closeted men and, in a hot second—and following a completely innocent evening—are willing to “come out.” It boggled my mind. Likewise, the whole movie set-up was preposterous. Peter shows up one day, is told he’s playing the love interest to a man, and by the next day, they are reading lines and filming. Really? I get that they are professional actors, but the time frame was inexcusably compressed, and I can’t fathom why. There should have been chemistry reads between the love interests and, while Lisette acknowledged Peter had the full ability to walk, he was basically coerced by his friend to stay in the production. To me, that seemed shameless and abusive. It felt like an unconscionable manipulation, even if Peter agreed.

Love! Action! Horror?

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving an honest review. As I’ve said before, I always give honest reviews whether people appreciate them or not.

This story begins with Thomas Walsh ending a call with his father. Thomas is a production assistant (PA) for various productions (television and film) in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He is currently about to start on a new movie filming in downtown Vancouver. The movie in question will star Peter Erickson who happens to be a pretty big star these days. The movie also has several PA’s for the different actors, the director, etc. Thomas will basically be Peter’s handler I guess. Lisette Grenier is the director and the movie is her personal, little project. Initially when she approached and hired Peter she told him that he would be opposite indie film actress, Lindy. Well…she decided to go another way with the movie. Lindy will be his sister and his co-star and love interest will be actor Cole Hamilton. Wait! What?

Keep in mind that this is a fairly small, low budget, artsy type of movie so everything is pretty low key. The crew has all worked together before in other projects so they were their own little family. Thomas has worked with them for almost 10 years in the area and has definitely worked with Cole on a different one. Peter has worked with Lisette many years before but didn’t know Cole, the crew or even Vancouver. So now that you have a general idea of the main players and gist of what they do, let me describe Thomas. He's in his late twenties, quiet and shy. I’d say he’s also PDC (pretty darn cute). Peter is in his early forties, handsome and polite. I have to say that with as professional as Thomas is about his job and the handling of the actors, it was really cute when he meets Peter for the first time. When Thomas first meets him, while not as bad as wanting the earth to just swallow him, he was gawking at the actor.

In the movies, as in real life, everyone has something they don’t necessarily want made public. That’s the way life goes. Thomas certainly has his quiet secrets that no one knows about and Peter…Peter was part of another worst kept secret in the business. He had been the secret lover of a Hollywood director that had ex-wives and children. His lover had recently passed away, but now that Peter’s met Thomas things are turning around. There’s a mild Paparazzi incident, lots of drivers taking them places, filming nude love scenes and Peter and Thomas really getting to know each other. I have never read anything from Ms. Grey before, but this was so sweet and loving I have to look for more of her work. You ask why I added ‘Horror’ to the title of my review? Tiger Tail ice- cream.

Sweet romance between a movie star and a studio PA. This is Insta-love, like within 3 days, so if that turns you off, this is likely not a book for you. I loved Peter and his incredible gentleness with Thomas. Peter is still in the closet, pushed there by a lover who didn’t want to be out. Now that man has passed, and Peter wants love again and to come out. Thomas isn’t out either, and he avoids his family because of a tragedy in his past. When an innocent encounter between them is captured by a photographer, everyone assumes a relationship exists, giving Peter his chance. Thomas agrees to be Peter’s fake boyfriend so Peter can come out in exchange for Peter giving Thomas his first experience with sex. It’s very sweet, however unlikely, and there is very little angst. There are some emotional conversations when Thomas’ secret is revealed, but the book is very low angst overall. I have one complaint about the book, and it’s why I took off a star. The version I read did not say whose POV was being shared in each chapter. Sometimes I went a page or more without it becoming clear. This threw me out of the story, and sometimes I had to start the chapter over when the speaker wasn't who I originally thought. I still love the story, but the chapters need POV headers.

I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

I really adored this story - it is a coming out story for both MCs and I enjoyed how drama-free it was.
the story was very well paced and I enjoyed how the relationship developed - at least that was till the end. the epilogue was difficult as it was approximately 2 weeks later and there were many developments which normally need more time.

I could not understand why the author felt the need to stop the story where she stopped it. this story would have needed more chapters (at least to see these developments till the end of the movie) - that is the reason why this book has only 4 stars and not 5.

it was my first book by this author but I really enjoyed the writing style and it will not be the last one.

regareding the narrating: I enjoyed Michael Deans narration, as he really captured Peter and the flow of the story. but I had some troubles with his interpretation of Thomas, as he sounded very femme, which did not fit his description at all.
nevertheless, I enjoyed listening to this story and I am sure I will listen to it again

If you’re looking for a sweet, semi-short story look no further. There is some angst, but it doesn’t outdo the fluffy parts. I will say if discussing a past history of sexual assault is a trigger for you, you may need to approach this book with caution.

Who doesn’t fantasize about dating or falling in love with a movie star? Anyone? Anyone? (Be honest). You’d think being a PA on set would eventually knock that thought clear out of one’s head, but that’s not the case for Thomas. At least, not when it comes to Peter. The two hit it off right from their first introduction. Despite being on the opposite side of the cameras, they have more in common than they’d think.

The writing stayed consistent throughout, and I enjoyed the different characters in the book. I’m hoping maybe we’ll get to see more of Cole in the future. He’d make an interesting main character for sure, and I was left feeling very curious about him. As far as Thomas and Peter go, I’m not sure who I like more, so I will call it a draw. Overall, this is a great addition to my library, and I would definitely recommend it.

**First Time Reader** I really enjoyed this super sweet and romantic tale of two men who were attracted at first sight but who decided to try a relationship due to a publicity outing. Peter and Thomas had some differences that could have affected their new found relationship but they had one thing in common...both weren't publicly admitting they were gay. Somehow that "first date" they had was liberating to both and they were able to be real. Thomas backstory was really sad and bittersweet and the care and patience Peter had with him was so special. Peter had is own personal issues but being with Thomas allowed him to heal a lot. i was glad how thing worked out for the guys at the end. The epilogue with Thomas, his family and Peter was a sweet ending to a lovely book.

This was a sweet, super quick insta-love story. Thomas is a PA for a movie set and Peter is one of the stars of the film. Both men think they are in the closet, but people seem to know anyway. They go out, pretty much as friends, one night but a picture gets splashed in the papers. They are attracted to each other, but this spurs them coming together and initially “faking” a relationship that never actually was faked. They fell hard and quick, and the story moved them along fast. I didn’t have a problem with the story happening that quick, but I would’ve loved an epilogue for the guys down the road further. This was sweet overall.

Sweet, engaging and fun romance that will make your heart smile.   I enjoyed this story about the entertainment industry and the behind the scenes look at some of the different jobs.  I really enjoyed the MC's and found them really likable and well rounded people. The story-line was solid and the pacing went smoothly.  The writing flowed and i read this story in one sitting.  It is more of a novella length story, but it felt complete and fulfilling.

Peter and Thomas have a special connection that will touch your heart.  Yes there is chemistry, but there is real bonding and similar dreams that is a good basis for a future.  Their relationship was really fast, but I found myself enchanted and rooting for them.

This is book one of a new series One Scoop or Two.  I will definitely be on the lookout for the next one.  This is a new author for me and i will be following their work for sure.

This story was a new trope for me. I don’t often read celebrity gay fiction, (he says this after reading two in the last 48 hours 👀)

This piece was funny and sweet throughout! I really enjoyed the banter, the tender moments and even when things got a bit heated.

The plot was well brought together, And executed wonderfully. The characters and their quirks endear themselves to the reader and make you love them and their story. The way they fell together had me swooooooning.

The ending was so entirely adorable and sweet! It snuck up on me and I wasn’t entirely ready for it to be over, definitely something I’ll be reading again in the future.

Gabbi Grey’s ‘Catch a Tiger by the Tail’ is the perfect genre short story!

Grey’s novella is set in Vancouver, BC where the strikingly handsome 42 year old closeted international motion picture star, Peter Erickson, is about to co-star in a new indie romance.

Thomas Walsh, a 28-year old production assistant on the film’s crew, has been assigned to help Peter during the filming. Thomas is responsible for the delightful ice cream incident in the narrative that creates the ‘One Scoop or Two’ notation for the beginning of what I can only hope becomes an extensive new series.

Like any amazing home made ice cream, I can honestly say, “Try it - you’ll love it too.”

An adorable age gap, out for you, instalove story performed well by Michael Dean.
Both Peter and Thomas are in the closet and have stuff from their pasts to overcome so there's a dash of hurt comfort there.
