After defeating Nelson and his crew, Maddie and her group from Evening Shade are ready for some rest and relaxation before the big push to prepare for another post-apocalyptic winter. But trouble once again finds our group and this time, it is knocking at their back door.
News from Rank and his new friends down south rocks Maddie’s world and ignite her worse fears. She’ll be forced to make tough decisions, ones that she isn’t prepared to make. It will take a miracle—or an army to defeat this enemy and preserve their homestead.
I have a big problem with the MC Maddie. She has an inflated view of her usefulness and believes that the ex-military and military owe her information. She pushes and pushes even when informed that the information she wants is confidential. She isn't in the military at this point. She is constantly doing things that put her life and the life of others in danger. She calls women "chicks" all the time. That is a derogatory term used by gangs and young boys who think they are all that and more. I don't know of any women who use that term unless they are "rough and crude". She is married but insists on keeping her crush on another man who is dating someone else. She is jealous of his relationships. This series was ok, but then in the 6th book and this book it took a steady down-slide.
It was okay. I started off loving this series but the more I read, the more I thought it should have been condensed into about 4-5 books… another book, another battle. Finishing it became a chore
*****SPOILER******
Maddie becomes so much more obnoxious in this book IMO… she is a military brat. I get it, her dad was some big military bad ass. But at the end of the book they made Maddie a marine lieutenant? She had no military background, it was her 19th birthday, AND she almost got her entire group killed. But they put her in charge. Very far fetched, even in an apocalypse.
Defiance is the seventh book in TL Payne's Days of Want Series. You must absolutely read all books within this series before reading this one. Payne has set up a series of characters whose wins and losses ebb and flow within each novel of this series. It's important to know their groups story prior to reading this one to fully engage and understand the importance of their situation.
Set in Evening Shade, Missouri on the family farm, Maddie is adding another wave of training under her belt, diplomacy. Having been a true leader from the very beginning, Maddie has always been a strategic well written character. She's a inspiring survivor with enough charisma to convince a few towns to work together within this new world. However, in Defiance her diplomacy also must come with hard, cutthroat decisions that endanger her group as much as it provides the safe haven.
TL Payne adds yet another layer to this wonderful action-packed story. From the characters to their challenges, I have loved ever second of immersing myself into this post EMP world.
A fantastic series of books, really great. There are a lot of characters and over the seven books, I felt that I really got to know some of them, most especially Maddie, who wouldn't take no for an answer, but usually came out on top. I can't imagine how I would cope if a similar situation arose and let's be honest it could very well happen. I very highly recommend the Days of Want series it's an absolute must-read.
I wish this series continued on forever. The Days of Want series was my first foray into post-apocalypse genre, and the reason I have close to 50 books so far. I read about Maddie and Emma on that first day, and I just loved them. The writing never dragged, not too much senseless killing, and wonderfully realistic suffering. Always, there is cause and effect! There is no instant travel, no instant communication, and no outside the created world activity. Everything just fits. This series should be a blue-print on how to write this niche. Loved the entire series, and loved this book. Thank you to as wonderful writer.
Days of want series and the fall of houston series come together in this very exciting novel. The characters from finally meet and and fight together to overcome the a common enemy, General Dempsey, who has become a sadistic dictator of district 5 in Illinois and is conquering, enslaving and starving the citizens.
I hope this not the end of the series. Just because they have defeated one enemy does not mean that there aren’t other power hungry and/or sadistic groups waiting in the wings to pounce and try to take control.
A bittersweet read , I loved to read another installment in this series , but sad to.see it end .
T.L Payne dies a masterful job of telling the story of life after and EMP. Maddies life hasn't been the same since the EMP and it all has led to this book. Don't start this one roommate at night , there just isn't a place to put it down. I will miss these characters and this series but it was brilliant from start.to.finish . If it was appropriate to give a standing ovation to a book and and author , I would be doing so now. read this series, you will glad that you did.
This is a great post shit hits the fan series. Tackling the speed with which civilization falls apart, the kinds of threats, the actions needed to survive, the emotional pitfalls and even the everyday day effects of things like the weather. Laundry or showers. Unless you are a pepper you may never consider the realities of life without electricity. The author had written a wonderfully cohesive story of the effects on this small family and their friends in the new, old world and it is fascinating!
I'm so disappointed that this series has come to an end. I could keep reading about these characters for a long time. K nu I stayed on the edge of my seat for most of the time reading these books. That is when I wasn't laughing and crying. Normally I don't leave a written review but this series deserves that and so much to more. Don't pick up the first book if you don't have enough time to read them all because I can guarantee that this is a series you can't put down.
Liked the books for stark realities and losses of many, which would certainly be something that would occur. With the current resident who fraudulently occupies our White House, I can well imagine our country being ripe for our enemies and for tyrannical dictators on the homefront. Nice thought to mix that with well-armed patriots. Millions of us would fight for our freedoms.
When “The Days of Want” are upon us we will all need “Defiance” coursing thru our veins! So much loss so life and goods could cause some to buckle under like so many in Region 5 did. But the “Langston Group” pull the training that Greg Langston had given them and stood strong an proud like Marines do! We need dozens of Greg Langston’s today to prepare us for the Apocalypse that’s coming. God help us. Books like these are a part of that racing too!
The story would have been better if it wasn’t so difficult to get past the poor writing style and the awful narration. The narrator’s cringe-worthy I’ll-use of the pronunciation “thee” instead of the was obsessive. Aside from that, if you’re looking for a fair (not great) post-apocalyptic EMP story; that’s what you’ll get.
This was an amazing book. Actually this is an amazing series. I would highly recommend it to anybody who loves to read as much as I do. I'm looking forward to any other books written by TL Payne... This was definitely a page turner and I often had trouble putting it down. I can't wait to read the next one!!!
It definitely kept me reading and I read every book. Good character development but a little hard to keep up with all of the people that this story generated. I think it was probably necessary because they needed a small army to fight back at the end. Over all a good read.
This series kept me wanting more. I have stayed up many nights reading into the night when I should have been asleep. The chapters keep getting better as you go. I love that the same main characters go along with you in the book while adding new ones. The setting and details are perfect. I really loved this series.
There is nothing to fault. The writing, the characters and the storyline just are perfection. What I love is that even though there are a lot of characters the author gives the time to become part of the story so you easily know who is who. It is a spectacular read.
Wow!!! I was awake so I could finish the series. A little dust and dog hair never hurt anyone. I cringed when washing clothes was mentioned. I was mesmerized by the dept of this story. I could hear the bullets and hear the screaming sounds of a tornado. For me, I would recommend this series very highly.
I really enjoyed this series. It was full of action and the characters’ development as they faced hardships were admirable. I did find Maddie a tad impetuous but it worked out for her in the end. I also enjoyed the prepper information. An excellent read
Another great book by T. L. Payne. I love the characters in this book and series. I can’t wait for the next book in this series. I would recommend this book and all of T.L.’s books.
I read the whole series before posting my review. It is an amazing story, heart wrenching, suspenseful, funny and joyful. The main female character is a tad whiney for me, but the rest of the characters are truly amazing. I highly recommend this series.
I have really enjoyed this series . It's full of action and takes you on a nail biting ride . The characters are interesting and you find yourself really invested in them and their fight for survival. I would definitely recommend this series.
If I'd done this review halfway through it would be quite different. The main character, Maddy, was really irritating me. But she turned out to do the right thing even though I thought she would...
Another great addition to this fantastic series. The plot pulled me in and held my attention until the end. Once this tale started rolling, it gain speed fast. Happy reading!
Wow having finished book 5 of the fall of Huston series, reading this book had me following the adventures of both series of books characters. Brilliant, engaging, had me glued with their missions, T L Payne is a fantastic Author.
These books grabbed your interest and wouldn't let go. I'm not a reader of these type of books but I really enjoyed them. I will be reading more of T L s books.I would recommend these books to anyone who likes adventures .
I waited to review this series. I finished book 7 and I am still impressed. Great characters, realistic conditions, hair raising battles! One of the better eotwawki series I have read. Thanks to Payne for a wild ride!
I hoped for this ending but things usually don't go that way. I only wish it had showed a bit farther into the future at the end. Great read and great series. A definite recommend for all of it!
Maddie, her family, friends, neighbors and military from the right side fight back against Dempsey and Region 5. Their struggles aren't over, but for the first time since the EMP, there is hope for a future.
A Post Apocalyptic EMP Survival Thriller (Days of Want Series by T.L. Payne)
I really enjoyed this post apocalyptic EMP survival thriller series. It was tense, sweet, giving, sacrificial, and so much more with its ups and downs. It’s definitely worth reading this serious!
I enjoyed the books but the ending is not believable! Maddie always coming out unscathed but only after the guys save her and her victims! Then oh we'll make her an officer . Lets see if she can follow orders.
