Emerald Falls #3

The Masks We Burn

Rate this book
Amora Joy Orlov.

The thorn in my side, the bane of my existence. The woman with the loud bark and even harsher bite.

Cutthroat and defiant, she’s everything I don’t want, but exactly what I need. And as luck would have it, she also needs something from me.

A deal is struck; use each other until we both get what we want.

It should have been easy, and even easier to walk away in the end.

Somehow though, I’ve grown addicted to the pieces of herself she keeps hidden away, the little glimmers of the woman beneath the ruthless façade.

But the clock is ticking for the both of us, and in the end, it’s Amora who has to decide--

Hide behind the masks we wear, or burn them to ashes?

Hey there! My name is Lee. I like to think of myself as a bibliophile who belongs to the Ravenclaw house.
I write romances that can sometimes be sweet and spicy or deadly and kinky. I'm a firm believer in happily ever afters and men who always make sure their woman is satisfied first.
When I'm not writing, I'm drowning myself in a good book, losing track of time on the Nintendo Switch with my kids, and laughing or yelling at one of my husbands practical jokes. (He likes to leave fake spiders and roaches around.)
Also, something important to note. I live off Chai and Dean Winchester.

I loved this! Was 100% my favorite book in the series! Everything was working for me... The enemies to lovers aspect, the fake engagement, how Amora was the sassy/ballsy one and Will was the sweet/cinnamon roll type. The sexual tension was really great and so was the spice, was really damn sweet! And I absolutely loved that it was an interracial relationship. We need more diversity in Romance and NA soooo badly and Lee loves to write it so that alone always makes me want to read her works.

I think this book wrapped up everything for this series really well, but I am definitely sad to see it be complete.

I can see Lee's writing growing and evolving and I am so excited to see where she goes next and where her mind will take us!

The Masks We Burn is Amora and William's story, it's an enemies to lovers and fake engagement romance. It's a standalone and book #3 in the Emerald Falls series. Amora and William were introduced in book #1 "The Masks We Wear". This series is amazing! I really enjoy reading all the books, and I loved seeing all the characters making an appearance in this book. Especially seeing their friendship dynamics with each other. William and Amora are something else! What happens when fire fights with fire? Or when two equally stubborn and dominant characters go head-to-head with each other? Well, you can easily expect an inferno to happen. And all you simply need is some gasoline and a match to ignite the dormant tension between them. They want each other, but both of them are just too damn stubborn to admit it. Neither of them are interested in having a serious relationship, yet they cannot help themselves wanting so much more. My goodness! William may be a cinnamon roll, but in Amora's presence behind close doors that's a whole another story!! Some scenes were just too hot to handle!

Amora and William's first encounter wasn't really pleasant to say the least, and you can say that they don't easily get along. No matter how many years have past from their first unpleasant encounter, Amora is *still* holding a grudge, hence their interaction hurt her deeply. But whenever they meet there's this ever so thick intense tension between them. And this is the main reason they avoided each other, but now, they are or more like need to be in close proximity. Both of them are desperate to find a solution to their own situations. They may dislike and get under each others' skin, but when an opportunity arises that will benefit them both they need to work together. The solution to their problems, a fake engagement. But the more they spend time together, the chemistry they have heats up and slowly the lines got blurred. And after all, it's very difficult to deny their growing attraction for each other anymore, because it's inevitable.

Amora is the perfect example of a sassy, hotheaded and "doesn't take any cr*p from no one" character. To the outside world, Amora is confident and strong willed, but deep down she has certain fears and insecurities about herself. She's desperately trying to figure out what she wants from her life. All she knows that she needs to plan her future, but she just doesn't know what she wants and this terrifies her.  William can be seen as a ladies man; he's c*cky, hilarious and is aware how handsome he is. But that's just the surface,  no one is aware of the silent storms he's experiencing; William is feeling at lost, like he doesn't know what to do with his life and he's desperately trying to find his new purpose in life.  Amora and William may get on each others' nerves, but they just don't realize how similar they are. Both of them are racing against time; feeling like their time and luck is running out. Amora has a difficult relationship with her mother. They aren't on the same page, and their views in general clash with each other. But nevertheless she loves her mother. And William just wants to make his parents proud, he doesn't want to disappoint them. Overall, I absolutely loved how the storyline unfolded! I was happy to see Amora taking a step in the right direction and fight for her dreams. But the last chapter!! Oh my gosh!!! I was literally squealing!! Eeek! I absolutely love mafia romances and I cannot wait to read Onyx next year!!

⚡ARC REVIEW ⚡

I'm going to be totally transparent here. When I first met Amora in book one, I had my reservations!
But this book!!! Favorite one in the series, hands down!

*********************************************************************

We follow Amora, who is still a little unsure of the career path she wants to take in life. And she has an ultimatum of sorts with her mother, find a "suitable" job or agree to marry a man of her mother's choosing.
Amora would rather be with the guy who turned her down in highschool and made her hate him....in comes William.

William is the greatest cinnamon roll of all time! He just moved into the same building as Amora, and tbh he jumps at the opportunity to be her fake fiancé because he gets to join this elite fight club that her dad has access to.

These two has a bit of a scuffle back in highschool, so this book really does check everything off the list.

Fake Dating ✅
Enemies to lovers (but not really bc they always had the hots for eachother) ✅

I was lucky enough to get an ARC of this book, and I couldn't be happier! I was so excited to meet William after hearing he was a cinnamon roll, but I had slight reservations about Amora based on the previous two books. My reservations were quickly left in the past, and I absolutely love this book. It is a standalone but I HIGHLY recommend that you read the previous 2 books because it gives you crucial background not just for Amora and William, but for their friends.

Amora's walls are up after getting her heartbroken. Add an ultimatum from her mother, and her mask is ironclad. The strength of her mask slowly begins to fade when she makes a deal with William. Her growth throughout the book is fantastic. She starts off not telling anyone about her problems and struggling alone. She finally learns that she can lean on others while still being a badass who is in charge of her life. There are moments when she self-sabotagues her relationships but it made the ending of the book that much better.

Where do I begin with William Cassidy? I was promised the perfect gentlemen and Jacquot DELIVERED. Every time he called Amora bunny or sugar my heart melted into a puddle. He was so considerate but also so dominating when the timing was right. HIs attention to love languages was something I'd never read about before and definitely haven't experienced in real life. It made the reading experience that much more amazing; I couldn't stop smiling. Everything from the butterfly tattoos to his protective nature is absolute PERFECTION!!!! I love him so much.

I was not expecting a fake dating trope from this enemies to lovers romance but it was everything I could have asked for and more. The giddiness I felt was not immediate like in "The Masks We Break" so I only rated it 4 stars but its a definite must read! Lee Jacquot is one of my new favorite authors and i CANNOT wait to read the new series she teased at the end of the book. Also, if the that introduced at the end of the book (which threw me for a loop in the middle of my workout by the way) gets their own book, I will not be mad about it... just saying. GO READ THIS SERIES! ITS AMAZING

I was honored to be apart of the ARC team. So I received the book for honest review.

This is the 3rd and final book in the series. The series can be read out of order. But I personally don’t recommend it and I’m slightly sad that I didn’t read the previous books before this but I definitely plan too. I just don’t see how the other hero’s are gonna hold up next to William 🤷🏻‍♀️

Amora is headstrong, stubborn, and feisty and has hated William for about 4 years now which hasn’t been a problem as they haven’t had to be near each other until recently now that they are both apart of their closest friends wedding. William is ready to burry the past but Amora isn’t for it. But it turns out they can actually be of some assistance to one another in there personal journey of figuring out there future.

Enter the fake dating trope 💜

First and foremost I have never considered book boyfriends even with me enjoying a lot of the hero’s in the romance books I read. But William ! WILLIAM! Is my official ✨first✨ book boyfriend.
William is considered a “cinnamon roll” but Pleaaase don’t let that fool you! He is spicy and giving 😏

I enjoyed Amora from the beginning because she has such a smartass mouth, maybe she reminds me of me 🤔 yes you can tell she’s more bark than bite because hello it’s a Mask (aka title.) But she had a valid reason for her ways one I am fortunate enough to not relate too. So although there was one time I wanted to shake her for her decisions it stems from an experience I cannot understand.
William doesn’t come off as a cinnamon roll at first because he was ready to give the sass right back to Amora but it doesn’t take long to see who he is.
I think what I loved most about this book (William obviously) is the empathy. William is clearly an empath in my opinion which he seems to have got from his mother. The way he can see things in people and address it in a respectful and genuine way is so refreshing. Reading from his POV and how he can’t tell someone is feeling this or that and he doesn’t want to push to get them to talk they will when they are ready 👨🏽‍🍳💋

And lastly of course, there is spice!
And is the spice gooooooood. It was not cringy. The banter ✅ just 💜💜

I finished this book with a smile. Looked at my boyfriend and said “I finished my book! It made me happy” lol

***Thank you to the author for an ARC in exchange for an honest review***

The only way for me to describe the feeling of freedom is flight. It's the type of lightness in the body, offering an almost aerodynamic sensations, giving off the illusion as if gravity doesn't exist.

TW provided by the author: graphic consensual sex scenes, neglect from a parental figure.

Amora wants nothing more than to be free - to take control of her life and to live on her own terms instead of following her parents' expectations. She faces an ultimatum: find a job, or marry someone selected for her.

To throw her parents off her scent, Amora strikes a deal with long-time enemy Will. The arrangement sets them up to play pretend in order to bide time for Amora to figure out her future, as well as allow Will the access he needs to a private MMA fight club. Can Amora let her armour down enough to let Will in? Or will their arrangement crumble into nothing?

This was the third installment to the Emerald Falls series. I read and reviewed the first two books, The Masks We Wear and The Masks We Break, earlier this year and you can find my thoughts HERE. Though it is identified as a standalone, I enjoyed seeing snippets and updates of the previous characters, as Lee included their own development in this novel. Though you don't need to read the other two first, it does provide some secondary context - not to mention, you get to read more about some pretty amazing characters.

The thing I find about Lee's writing is that she is good at providing relatable characters. She doesn't present a one-size-fits-all approach to her characters, where she neglects physical descriptions to allow readers to step into the character's shoes (I'm looking at you, Stephenie Meyer...) Instead, she presents real people with real issues that readers can relate to on some level.

Amora is constantly faced with the traditional and strict expectations set by her mother, who is a proud Russian immigrant who wholly believes in the wife serving the household in a marriage. Working outside of the home is frowned on, and her mother takes all steps to lay out an ultimate plan for her daughter; however, Amora won't have it. She feels trapped. Restricted. Any thought of stepping out of this perfect image is met with verbal disappointment. I get it - this is exactly how I felt as a teenager and young adult. My parents had such specific hopes for me that it took a LOT of courage to stand up for myself. Like Amora, I built walls up around myself to seem self-sufficient and invincible. I still have yet to break them down.

Will presents as the ultimate protector, which is a good quality to have, unless you're working with an independent spitfire like Amora. His cockiness is an attempt to hide his sensitive side, but he truly is a treasure of a human. He listens attentively, doesn't attempt to dismiss or gaslight Amora and strives to hold himself with utmost respect and integrity.

Another thing about The Masks We Burn is that, though it is an adult romance with a decent amount of sizzling scenes, there is also a strong plot and motivation for the characters to move forward together. Yes, some scenes can leave you panting, but this is secondary to the plot where Amora and Will truly shine.

I honestly really love this series. You can see the progression of the author's writing quality as you work your way through. She introduced me to tropes I've never really read before and made it a really enjoyable experience. I cannot wait to see what she has in store for her readers in her new mafia series featuring Onyx - look for it in January 2022!

"But have you ever felt the sun on your face after being in the dark? After being without the warmth for days on end? If you have, then you get it. If not, then you won't understand how I feel right now."

I loved Will from the very beginning, probably for not always the greatest reasons being the boy you hate to love but just do anyways. He is the picture perfect, southern charmer but we finally get to see beyond that when he lays it all out for the one girl he can't free himself from.
Amora- Mora- is lost in life. Every person and thing around her seems to be moving onward and upward with life except her but she refuses to settle for a life that would do nothing but snuff the fire within. At some point in time she needs to put her big girl panties on and speak up. Little did she know in order to be found you sometimes just have to get lost, and maybe lose a pair of panties along the way as well.

"It isn't until he's carrying me to his front door that I realize just how lost I am. How we are a train wreck waiting to happen. But even knowing so, I wouldn't get off even if it slowed enough for me to jump."

This entire series has been an amazing and much needed addition to the romance book world. These two together are the sugar and spice combo that have you eating up their story in no time, you won't want to set it down. So buckle up and get ready for the ride because it's got everything nice, and naughty, you need.

Thanks Lee for the ARC 🖤

I received this as an ARC for an honest review

Lee Jacquot does it again! William definitely is my favorite out of the 3 men in this series! She told me it would be and she delivered! I love a cinnamon roll man and a sassy woman 🥰

This book has fake engagement trope and enemies to lover, which is my favorite. They have know each other since Senior year of high school. Their first interaction wasnt great and Amora love to hold grudges.

Amora is an independent woman that has a hard time letting people in and relay on anyone but herself. Her mother want to marry her off so she would be taken care off and she doesnt agree she will be cut off.

William is a very carrying dependable guy. He keeps fighting to find the spark of excitement and passion for things. William believes that getting into a legal elite MMA fighting club would bring what he hasnt felt in years. The thing is that he needs an invitation to get into the club.

I was hocked as soon I started reading. I stayed up last night reading it! I couldn’t put it down! It definitely had me invested all the way through and I love that.

The characters were very well written and I love how Lee actually writes their problems and they work on themselves before they actually commit to the relationships.

The book is about building trust, acceptance and learning that asking for help is not a sign of weakness.

I read an advance copy of this book.

An enemies to lovers with fake engagement trope. Will and Amora have hated each other since their first meeting when Will turned down Amora and read her like a book.

Amora is counting the days til graduation where her mother expects to marry a rich guy that will take care of her and she is just a housewife. Hence the fake engagement Amora talks Will into to placate her mom for the moment.

Will is looking for something to replace the high feeling he used to get when playing football in high school. There is also a fight club he wants to get into that Amora’s dad runs - but you can only become a member if invited and is his condition for the fake engagement.

The tension between these two are so thick until they give into their desires for one another. Their love story is so amazing and I loved reading every word and seeing the both of them finding their true selves. Amora and Will have become my favorite couple of this series!! I love them all but Will and Amora are by far my favorite.

I was an ARC ready but this will not impact my review.

When I first started reading this book, I didn’t think I would relate to Amora. While our stories are very different, I can definitely understand her feelings of anxiety and fear for the future. Her love story with William seemed so natural and real. It was so hard to put down the book. In fact, I finished it in only 2 days. The romance between Amora and Will was something so beautiful and pure. Amora’s interactions with her friends and the other characters didn’t feel forced or like it was all just a filler for the romance part of the book. Would definitely recommend to anyone and will continue to enjoy more of the author’s work!!

ARC Review!!! My first ARC and it did not disappoint! This is a stand alone but the third in a series. I have not read the other two but fell in love with the characters and can't wait to read the next two. This book has so many tropes romantics you'll love including enemies to lovers and fake dating (one of my favs). Mora and Will are perfect for each other. Mora is a modern woman and in a little but of all of us. She has goals and won't let anyone keep her from them... except maybe herself. A grumpy/cinnamon combo you can't help but fall in love with! Definitely worth the read!!

This is the third book in the series and Lee did not disappoint! An amazing cinnamon roll of a man and a very strong independent woman. This enemies to lovers came with a fake engagement, so you can only imagine how that went down. By the end I was rooting for this couple and the ending was absolutely swoon worthy!
I got this book as an ARC for my honest review.

Copy received from the author. Voluntarily reviewing and all opinions are objective and my own.

This series continues to get better and better! I wasn’t sure what to expect of Amora and Will, but do you know what we get? Fun, spice, and good ol’ fun mixed in with some insanely amazing characterization.
Amora hates Will after an incident in high school, but suddenly they need each other. He needs a favour and she takes advantage of it by getting something out of their deal. Combine it with the fact that they’re both helping plan Spencer and Lily’s wedding, and they’re together a lot.

What happens when people spend a lot of time with one another? Attraction grows. THey learn about each other. What makes them tick, what makes them fear, why they do what they do.

And cue romance.

Seriously though, the character development is HERE and it’s amazing. It’s easily Lee’s best quality with her books. I can’t think of a single character of hers I haven’t found myself invested in.

Of the trilogy, which do I like more? Probably number 2 because of the whole nerdy girl and bad boy trope, but they all do come close to one another.

Do I cry now or later?

Ughhhh I was so excited for the ending of this series. And Ms. Lee did not disappoint. But why did it have to be so good that I want more? A fabulous enemies to lovers romance. Heavy on emotions. William and Amora found their wings together and I loved watching them fly to their happily ever after together.

6 stars. I've been completely obsessed with this entire series and this one was honestly no different. William was so playful and sweet. Amora was so strong, so independent and although she might not have previously been the nicest person in previous books, she's learning and growing in this one. If you pick this series up, you won't regret it. I have let this series completely consume me and I don't regret that or emailing the author to gush my thoughts at 2am. Because this series means the world to me. I will never stop recommending this series because it's incredible. The characters, the beautiful writing, the angst, the romances. All of it. 6 star worthy right across the board.

Amazing Read

“It’s funny how once something is built, it can be destroyed beyond repair in seconds. And no matter how hard you try to fix it, nothing will ever make it perfect again.” ~ Amora

Book Three in Emerald Fall Series, can be read as Stand-alone also.

Amora and William are Enemies from their first head crash. Amora is defiant and William is Cocky. A match made in Hell, they can't tolerate each other in same room but they struck a deal with each other to get what they want.

“It’s funny how once something is built, it can be destroyed beyond repair in seconds. And no matter how hard you try to fix it, nothing will ever make it perfect again."

More time they spent together, More Amora drops her shield to her heart and More William became addicted to side she hides.

Amora is not ready to leave herself without her armour for the world to play with her insecurities.

Amora is strong, stubborn, arrogant with attitude of a bitch or she pretends to be all of those things to form a defensive shield to hide her insecurities and softy heart. She is a scared girl from her haunting childhood memories.

“A woman who is difficult, hardheaded, stubborn, and sarcastic. A woman who has armor made of steel and won’t let anyone even remotely close enough to see who she is underneath."

William is self assured, talented, soft spoken, boy with charm, Mamma's boy and perfect gentleman with giant body and devilish green eyes.

“Everything my parents raised me to be—a provider, a protector, everything that comes naturally to me, is everything she... "

Amora and William are searching for path they want, for the live they want to live after graduation which make the feel alive and give purpose and meaning to their lives. They searched for it, worked hard for it, fight for it and last they find it.

Both MCs have great character and personality, they show tremendous character development. I really liked how they find their true paths and How much self-aware they are about their fears, insecurities and feelings.

The Story was amazing, all the baking, sports, Manga, wedding preparation, the party and wedding happening in the book. I liked other character from previous book coming together to be there for each other.

I liked how understanding William is to Amora's needs. I loved every time how there is a storm and he is ready to hug Amora to sleep. He truly understands Amora's fear and her need for his presence.

William and Amora's relationship with their parents was opposite. William have supportive and understanding parents who know their boy, try to be there for him in best possible ways. Where as Amora have a father who is absent from her live to provide for her and busy in his work and controlling mother who doesn't wants to understand her daughter's need for freedom.

Ending was great, William did the right thing and Amora understand her feelings and wants at the right time.

All the fun banter, one liners and shared ideas was enjoying to say the least.

The only issue I guess I have is with the Character of Amora's mother, she is selfish, controlling and weak. She is not ready to step out of her comfort zone and understand her daughter's need, not to depend on anyone.

I enjoyed this one, Great MCs, easy read and good story line.

All and all, you will like it.

“I’m not always trying to insult you,” I say in response to calling her girl. “But what I do need your hardheaded ass to realize is both in our fake engagement and planning for a real wedding, we got to be some kind of team. It’d be nice and go much smoother if we were on the same page, ya’ know?”
She rolls her eyes, whatever thought she had while staring at my lips obviously long gone. “Honestly, I’ll settle for being in the same book. I’m not sure you and I will ever be on the same page.”
“And why is that?”
She shrugs, turning back toward the TV and pressing play on the next episode. “Because you read too slow, and I always plan to stay ahead.”

I was sent an ARC of this book and it will not affect thoughts or opinions on this book in my review.

I'll preface this by saying that I have not read any of the Emerald Falls novels prior to reading The Masks We Burn, but this was described as a standalone novel that could be read without the other two prior to this. It's always nice to have a collective series, but I did enjoy that I was able to read this without having to go and read the other two!

I love Amora. I love her arc and I really found myself connecting with her. Character spoiler, not plot spoiler:

The biggest complaint that I have with The Masks We Burn is the writing style. Again, I haven't ready a novel by Lee Jacquot prior to this. But the writing style really lacked to me. All of it just seemed so...unrefined to me. The first person POV fit and Jacquot does a great job of making sure that each chapter told by each characters sounded as if each character was literally relaying the story to you. But that was what I disliked so much. I think this would have benefited if it was from third person POV with a focus on each character. (Again, I know that is a completely ridiculous request because this is the third in a series, but still.) There also felt like there was so much unnecessary detail that was added in about the characters actions.

If I had to read the word "bro" one more time I was going to throw my laptop across the room. Most of the dialogue with the women were great. I loved Amora's voice and her attitude and the other women. But god, the men made me want to rip my hair out. I thought that the banter between the characters was great. Every little "spat" felt genuine and I could easily hear an actual voice in my head when reading the characters.

The spice scenes? Chef's. Fucking. KISS. My partner was tired of my ass reading a couple chapters and then putting the phone down and dragging him away from his own tasks. They could wait. One of the things I hate in romance novels is the spicy scenes and the dialogue between the two characters is so cringeworthy. But this? Amazing. Spectacular. Wonderful. Sexy. Fantastic. 10/10.

Spoilers Below:

I thought every single paragraph including a description about how sexy the other was or how much the other one wanted to sleep with the other was too much. Every paragraph did not need a description of it. I get it. They're hot for each other. From the jump though it took me out of the story and I thought it wasn't believable. Especially at points where they were trying to be serious. It really undermined the seriousness of what was going on.

My final review is really along the lines of a 2.5/2.75, but I'm gonna round up to a three. I'm looking forward to reading the next set of books that Jacquot has coming!

The Masks We Burn just proved to me that I have not lived until I have a fake engagement of my own. I mean, COME ON!
Full disclosure, I read this book a few days late because I knew that I would want to read it in one sitting and today was the first day I had time to do so, but it was so worth the wait.
I won't lie, every time I saw Lee make a video talking about this cinnamon roll man, I was like NO WAY is she talking about William Cassidy, because all I can remember was him during The Masks We Wear and I was not a fan of his behavior. But this man changed, and he changed for the better.
Amora Orlov was raised in a household where her father was a provider, which kept him away from home more often than not and her mother was set in her beliefs that a woman's purpose was to become a wife, mother, and caregiver above all else while the husband's was to be the breadwinner. So when Amora's mother leaves her with an ultimatum, Amora makes a decision that benefits her in more ways than one, but it's with her enemy, William Cassidy.
Obviously Will has his own reasons as to why he is going along with this fake engagement, but that doesn't take away from the fact that Will is a filthy filthy man. *cue cheeks turning red from blushing*
Let me just say, there were definitely multiple memorable sexy-time scenes, but THE SHOWER?!?!?! Oh my lanta, I was freaking salivating-I couldn't get enough!
But don't get it twisted, William Cassidy is much more than a gorgeous body and a dirty mouth. He is kind, thoughtful, and an all in all great human being. The way he saw that Amora had secrets that were tearing her apart inside and he chose to stick it out so she felt safe and comfortable enough to communicate her problems with him was so beautiful. Honestly, I would have been content if there was no falling out between these two because I was that into their love story.
And okay, I know a bunch of people love the tent scene, but are we forgetting about the first night Will came over and he found a way to stay with Amora without truly giving away the fact that he was staying for her peace of mind?!??! Like HELLO?!?!? Gahhhh. I love this man.

And finally, a quote that I won't be forgetting any time soon:
"Amora isn't some damsel that needs to be saved. She's a queen in a suit of armor that no one can get through. She may be stuck in some tower right now, but she's busting her ass trying to get out, and I'm just the ladder to help her down. Or maybe the bishop she uses to win her freedom."

If you guys are on the fence about reading this book, I highly suggest it. It gives you alllll the feels. I loveeee me some William Cassidy now, which is perfect because I'm also obsessed with potatoes (iykyk).

I had the honor of receiving an arc for The Masks We Burn (#3 in the Emerald Falls series) in exchange for my review and it did NOT disappoint! Though we aren’t surprised because Miss Lee Jacquot never misses! 💕

This book has every trope I love: We’ve got Enemies to Lovers, we’ve got Fake Engagement, Slow burn, and we’ve got sassy, independent woman and a man who wants to treat her like a Queen! I’ve loved Amora throughout the series and was not disappointed at all to really dive into her story and learn more about her and her hardships, like her mother who expects so much from her and won’t just let her live her life the way that she does.

I won’t lie..I didn’t care for William in the start..I KNOW, I’M SORRY! 😭 William was very cocky about how attractive he is and all the women he gets, which I usually don’t care for a lot of, but I was pleased when I got to know him a little better and that sweet side came out! I definitely see what Amora saw in him (That coffee table scene?? 🥵)

Overall, I loved it! I think that Amora and William are perfect for each other and their chemistry is on fire!❤️‍🔥 The spicy was *chef’s kiss* definitely the spiciest out of all of them in my opinion and I may have read a few scenes…over and over👀👀 I think my heart still belongs to Remy and Blaze, but I still loved this book to death and I recommend it 1000%

Also so so SO excited for Onyx and her story! I was SCREAMING when I read that little teaser and I can’t tell you how excited I am to continue the stories of Emerald Falls with our beloved characters and all the new characters I know I’m going to love!

AMAZING. AS. ALWAYS. You really did that, Lee ❤️

Didn’t really find the story captivating enough. It felt like the classic tropes you love and enjoy, cherish and nurture, the ones that pull at your cliched heartstrings but then turned boring and completely ruined in this book. The plot was decent, one with the fake dating trope and characters with good backgrounds, and fears, but the execution was just sooo off. This is something I’d expect off a mediocre wattpad book, not a published book with decent ratings. I felt like the plot gave soo much room for chemistry between characters but didn’t take it. While I get the story was supposed to be one with a lustful connection that gets them together, I didn’t find myself transitioning into the “I truly care about you one hundred percent, and my heart aches to be with you and I suddenly don’t hate you anymore” faze. You know those hidden moments in books where the characters start trusting and fully depending on each other, and it physically pulls at your heart strings, and you just have that sensation in your chest as if you’re in love with them too, that comes with the transition to the happy ending? Yeah, that doesn’t happen. They just have sex a couple times, realise that their lust could be more than just that, and have one vulnerable week point for characters that aren’t fully used for fluff, and boom, that’s that. Once I put the book down for a break, there was just nothing pulling me back. It felt like I’d already knew what would happen, and it did, and I ended up with a not so satisfied feeling. Felt a little generic, but if you want to have that cliche trope experience, I guess this is the book for you.

Ok so this book has a little bit of everything...enemies to lovers, fake engagement, and those tension filled spicy scenes we love! Amora hates William, every since an unfortunate incident at a high school party. William needs Amora's help in order to join an underground MMA club her dad runs. She only decides to help him because she can use him to get her overbearing mother off her back. I was a new reader to Lee Jacquot before the Emerald Falls series. But I fell in love with these characters and their story lines.

After reading books 1 and 2, I wasn't sure how much I was going to like William and Amora's story. I didn't really like him from the other books and she was harder to connect to but I was pleasantly surprised once I started reading... I was hooked after the first chapter! William is such a ham, I ended up really loving him and adding a new book boyfriend to my list!

There were so many little things about this book and even the series as a whole that drew me in and kept me entertained. Well worth the read!!! I received an ARC copy of this book for an honest review, all opinions are my own.

This is the Third book in the Emerald Falls Series. The story is about William and Amora who had an encounter in the past that left both of them with distain for each other. William was unkind in his words to Amora who took them very personally. They are pushed together by helping there friends plan there wedding. They is extreme tension between both of them until they need something the other can help them will. In comes the Fake Engagement. The more time they spend with each other the more the feel for each other. Amora is struggling with her feelings as her mother has made it that she feels she can't have anyone in her life as she wont be beholden to them or have anyone make her feel she can't do anything without them, protector, provider. Her mothers idea of what a women's life should be housekeeper, child caregiver not someone who can take care of themselves has made Amora very closed off to anything love could give her. William tears down those walls. This is a very good Enemies to lovers, Fake engagement story with steamy sexy scenes. If you love these kinds of books you will love this one.
I was given a copy of this book as an ARC for my Honest review.

Starting this off by saying I thought I loved the second book the most but BABY do I stand corrected.

This book includes all of our favorite bookish hits including the soothing sounds of:
Enemies to lovers
Fake engagement
Bully/sunshine

William and Amora have the BEST dynamic of couples in this series. The will they won’t they, the tension, YUM. I absolutely loved the banter between the two and the sass from Amora! I identify with her character so much so watching her grow into her own person and break away from tradition was SUCH a joy to read. I was cheering out LOUD for miss girl😂
Also watching William blossom and put aside some of his own wants to allow her the space to grow- be still my HEART.

All in all this book kept me on my toes!
...Also the spice also had me entrenched if we’re being honest.

If you want some smut, a ton of tension, great banter and characters with depth, PLEASE read this book!!

Also a note to/on the writer- I always love watching authors develop as they grow in their craft and you can truly see the growth from book 1 to book 3 and that personally warms my heart. So to you Lee, keep it up! And thank you for creating these stories❤️

Sweet and spicy. A bishop and his queen. A cinnamon roll and a hothead. William and Amore aren’t meant to get along. They haven’t since they met, yet the yeast has to sit before you can bake the rolls. The tension must grow, the passion intensify. The dough is finally ready, all crisp and warm. Then it deflates. Loses the 𝑢𝑚𝑝ℎ. It seems lifeless, unusable, and suddenly the brown edges seem 𝑏𝑢𝑟𝑛𝑒𝑑. There is nothing else left to do but to see how it tastes. Find out if it really is ruined. But it’s not. The thing is better than expected, bringing with it’s burned corners a flavor of both sugar and spice. Will and Amora take their time in becoming a delicious treat, including every possible miscommunication and grudge in their recipe of love.

“Amora isn’t some damsel that needs to be saved. She’s a queen in a suit of armor that no one can get through. She may be stuck in some tower right now, but she is busting her ass trying to get out, and I’m just the ladder to help her get down. Or maybe the bishop she uses to win her freedom.”- William

The Masks We Burn is the third and final book in the Emerald Falls Series. It can be read as a standalone, as long as you don’t mind spoilers regarding the other couples in the series, but I highly recommend reading the other two books first.

The spiciest of the three books, The Masks We Burn does not disappoint!! The relationship between William and Amora is sweet, funny, and sincere, and is my favorite of the whole series.

Some tropes included in this book is enemies to lovers, enemies/friends with benefits, fake engagement, and forced proximity. Author Lee Jacquot delivers on the spice, tension, and romance, and I can’t wait to see what else she does.

While this book reads similarly to a fan fiction when it comes to pacing and tone, I didn’t mind it. Also while I think the duel POV makes the book much more enjoyable, sometimes it makes the timeline is a little confusing and I found myself having to think about when exactly things were happening. Overall, it’s a quick and fun read that I would recommend to anyone needing a romance fix.

The Masks We Burn is a stand-alone book in the Emerald Falls Series. It’s the third book, following the story of Amora and William. You can read this book on its own but for maximum reading enjoyment, I recommend reading the first two books beforehand!

We first meet Amora and William in The Masks We Wear and their first meeting was a collision of two very strong people. They don’t get along, at all, and when they are forced to fake an engagement, the walls surrounding their hearts begin to crack.

I love Lee’s writing style. These characters face real challenges and while there are tough moments to read, they preserve and survive. I also love how open Lee is with writing characters who talk to therapists and see therapists and make it normal. It’s okay to talk to someone and I love seeing this depicted in books.
