Among the many books written about Malabar Rebellion, this one by K N Panicker stands out due to its historical accuracy and multi-level analysis, courtesy of the extensive research done by the author. The book paints a realistic portrait of Malabar in the 18th century, its social, economic and cultural backgrounds and religious and political scenarios. By describing how the land, resources and money were distributed among various Hindu castes and Muslims and comparing with their population and how it varies throughout the period, the class difference that sets the stage for various rebellions is illustrated. The analysis of various documents and legal proceedings points out it was a rebellion against the British and the feudal lords who supported and benefited from the British rule. From a Gramscian viewpoint, Panikkar shows how it was a class war, though religion was a major factor in mobilising people. It lacked coordination and unity among leadership and couldn't prevent the rebellion from taking directions that were not part of its initial course. The presence of fanatic elements and criminals and failure in controlling them soon caused the rebellion to diverge into dimensions which later caused permanent damage to the cordial relationships that existed between Hindus and Muslims of Malabar. This includes religious clashes and forced conversions which were later blown out of proportion and magnitude by many historians. Failure of the Indian National Congress, which initially supported the Khilafat movement in later controlling it, acted as a catalyst in derailing the rebellion, which tore apart the secular fabric of Malabar beyond revival.

It looks more like a research paper or a PhD thesis, which portrays the research work behind the book for most of the part. It is not for easy reading, but requires diligent involvement. Indeed it gains paramount significance in the current political scenario.
