Secrets of The Sealed Forest

What would you do if you were given the chance to embark on a real life adventure? Would you take the plunge, or let it pass onto the next person?

After traveling halfway across the globe with the promise of an exclusive video game event, Joseph Erift is pushed on a journey by a coffee-addicted professor that will forever change his life. He never thought magic could be real. That it was just an element found in fantasy stories and games. Airships and magic spells that create fire and slow time don't exist in the real world.

However, if that were the case, then why is he seeing these things, and why are he and his best friend being sent on a quest to stop a vengeful young man from awakening an ancient power?

Video gamer Joseph gets an invite to an actual adventure but will he accept or refuse? Joseph Erift and his best friend are avid gamers. When he receives an invite to an exclusive video game event, he travels thousands of miles to take part. Once he arrives, though, he discovers he’s about to play a video game, for real, not with a gaming system. It’s an adventure of a lifetime but the risks are even greater. Magic is real and he must stop someone from awakening an ancient power. Will Joseph and his best friend accept the challenge or will they leave it to some other gamer?

Erift's Journeys: Secrets of The Sealed Forest is the ultimate in contemporary fantasy, perfect for gamers and anime fans. From the first page, I was sucked in. I connected with Joseph right away. He’s such a likable guy. He’s an everyday hero with honest reactions and the ability to overcome anything. The plot moves at a very quick pace with a bunch of characters to interact with. What impressed me most was the intricate world-building. J.T. Tenera takes the reader and plunges them inside the story through fast action, unexpected twists and turns, obstacles to overcome, descriptive narration and so much more. The writing is aimed at young adult fantasy readers yet there’s a sophistication that I appreciated. The more I read, the more I felt like I was in the middle of an RPG, only in word format instead of graphics. If you love YA fantasy, pick up Erift's Journeys: Secrets of The Sealed Forest. RPG gamers and anime readers, this is your next book to devour. Highly recommend!

A fantastic Young Adult/Middle Grade read that thrills the reader with fun surprises and a fast-paced plot that’s easy to believe—I thought it could truly be happening!
From the first chapter on, I was captivated and amused, provided with a vivid sense of intrigue and adventure. At times, the read was effortless as watching a movie (though, I must admit, I found that Professor Ben’s lengthy, non-informative dialogues were slightly fatiguing).
The protagonist, Joseph, seems rather stereotypical in this story, though it’s hinted that he possesses dynamic characteristics that we’ll learn about later. It seems clear this book is intended to be read as a series rather than being a standalone that was simply added onto.
The other characters, while seeming unimportant at occasional times, are relatable and witty, offering both wise and funny remarks throughout the narrative. Professor Ben was one of my favorites, even if I was also irritated with him as previously mentioned. I felt that Eric, though potentially a wonderful character on his own, was more of a comic relief and didn’t have much of an arc himself. I’m expecting there’ll be more for him in the next installment as well.
As for the settings, they are vivid, and interestingly described—so much that I still have them imprinted in my mind.
One thing I particularly liked about this book is that the entire plot seems wrapped in mystery, but it doesn't drown out the action and make it feel like a detective story. Instead, this feels more like a contemporary sword-and-sorcery, which seems a fresh take on the genre considering the mention of video games—though don’t be fooled by the blurb and think they’re going to get sucked into a digital reality, it’s much more exciting than that.
As the first book in a series, you can expect the ending to leave you wanting more and with several unanswered questions. J.T. Tenera accomplished this successfully while still providing a satisfying conclusion to this installment.
The last thing I’d like to mention is that this book succeeded where many fail: to make me laugh out loud multiple times while reading. I can honestly say I enjoyed it, and it deserves the stars for sure.

Very enjoyable story! Two teenage boys receive an opportunity of a lifetime. While the story takes twists and turns, the characters and scenes come to life. This is every teenagers dream, to be in a fantasy

This book was a much-needed adventure. I suggest you take it too! As a writer myself, I admire the story's ability to paint a vivid picture of the fascinating and wonderful world within it.

Importantly I want to touch on something mentioned in a few other reviews if I may! The story does start off at a moderate pace and features character introductions and world-building. This is the first book of what comes off as a larger series; to expect drastic character changes after the first book would not be cohesive. We just met these characters so the changes from beginning to end of this installment are minor (though deeper character development is something I would like to see in the coming installments), despite, the writer evidences a robust ability in this fashion to take me into the heart of the reality they are painting. AND I LOVE THAT. (i think you may too!)

The story begins with Joseph and his best friend Eric being invited to a video game event featuring a new game. However, that turns out to be far from the truth as the boys are instead shown that magic exists in the real world! That’s something the slower pace in the first half proves as an asset. Both the characters and myself as the reader are eased away from the real world and introduced to the fantasy elements within the story. I felt the real world melt away as I went on this journey with them. It has been a long time since I was able to drink in a story so deeply, perhaps in part due to the attention to detail.

That’s not to say nothing happens in the first half!! We’re introduced to characters, shown many fantasy elements and given hints to the events that might unfold throughout the series.

The second half of the book picks up nicely. The boys encounter the main antagonist and are bested by him in fantastical ancient ruins, given their first spells, and sent to a mythical forest where nothing is what it seems! My favorite part of the story is how everything is easy to visualize and the locations are wonderful. My mind's eye seamlessly sees the story because of the rich detail imparted. I expected the teens to be drawn into a video game, but that didn’t happen and I was wonderfully surprised.

I was given a copy for my honest review and leave it at my own desire. I would recommend to readers who are at least ten years or older due to light swearing and very mild violence. The reading is clean, the editing done well, and typos rare. I plan to recommend this story to readers who love fantasy or anyone who in their heart stirs the desire for adventure and needs a break from this crazy world we live in. I enjoyed (and needed!) this and I think you will too.

Adventure starts with a dream.

If you are looking for a full on adventure story that takes you to undiscovered places, secret labyrinths and a magical forest you’ve just found your next read. This story will take you to places unimaginable and flies you to the edge of the world.

Joseph and his best friend Eric get pulled into an adventure of a lifetime, when they receive an invitation to a video game beta testing. Little did they know this invitation was coated in lies and only meant to lure them in.

This incredible journey takes two teenage boys into a discovery of magic, secret labyrinths and unexpected battles, while in search of answers. Their dynamics are rather interesting to follow as Joseph is very level-headed and collected while Eric can get impulsive and reckless. I rather liked Joseph and his way of handling every situation with calculated cool, to the extent anyone finding out Magic is real truly can. Eric, on the other hand, annoyed me by the end of the book and I wished him to just shut up for a change. He was not one to keep his tongue behind his teeth and kept on shouting silly threats to whomever was there to challenge the friends. I totally get where Eric is coming from, but I expected to see a bigger growth in him throughout the story. I do think a lot of the readers will find Eric rather amusing and as characters go, he was incredibly well portrayed, despite infuriating me at times.

Professor Ben was a rather peculiar character. A mad scientist with an addiction to coffee and a sole goal to research Magic. You’ll either like him, distrust him, or he’ll simply play with your mind. He did grow on me by the end of the book and I’m sure if he shows up in the next book, he’ll be more considerate.

Having been a gamer myself I could totally picture the whole journey of Eric and Joseph as part of a computer game. It was not! It was all real, vivid and no extra lives were granted to the participants. Thank god, they didn’t need them. That doesn’t mean they didn’t go through any hardships on the way!

A "Legend of Zelda" type adventure

This book is perfect for middle grade gamers who are reluctant readers. It blends the feel of multiple different video games (such as elder scrolls, legend of Zelda, and more) into a fun book. You have the makings of a game right here (the reluctant hero, the energetic best friend, the slightly eccentric mentor, and even a mysterious old dude). However, I think what I'm most excited for is to see how the "mysterious hooded girl" fits into everything. Just who is she?

Erift's Journeys: Secrets of The Sealed Forest is an interesting start to the urban fantasy series following adventures of two high school boys, Joseph and Eric, as they discover the existence of Magic and slowly uncover how they fit into a grander scheme of things.

When I started Secrets of The Sealed Forest, I somehow expected something different, with the game demo somehow playing a bigger role in the narrative as both boys, and especially Eric, were the gamers, and yet, it was interesting to see the story going in a slightly different direction. Joseph and Eric’s constant bickering made me feel at ease and nearly back at this age, where the world was full of possibilities and your biggest worry was getting caught by the parents when you were sneaking out (both Joseph and Eric are going to be in so much trouble after this adventure!).

I had a slight issue with the pacing of Secrets of The Sealed Forest as I have felt that the real story hasn’t started well far into a book, with the action towards the end feeling rather sudden and rushed. However, as it’s the beginning of the series, the reader has to become accustomed to the setting and the major players of the story, so that can be seen as world-building/introducing instalment of the series. It would be interesting to see how all the characters introduced in this book fit into the rest of the series as some of them stayed a mystery partially, opening the door the next part of the adventure for Joseph and Eric! Despite a few missed typos, it was a good start to the series, and I would recommend Secrets of The Sealed Forest to someone looking for an urban fantasy with younger protagonists.

Big thanks to the author for gifting me a copy of this book for reading and reviewing, I have enjoyed it!

This is a really entertaining read. Two teenage gamers, under the rouse of playing a new video game, end up going on the adventure of their lives and discovering the magic within themselves.

This is definitely a middle-grade read despite its length. I would imagine that readers in the target age group might really relate to and enjoy the silly banter between the two main characters. While I didn’t necessarily get it or find it funny at all times, it definitely will entertain younger readers.

I received a copy of this book through Voracious Readers Only and am leaving a review voluntarily.

J.T Tenera crafted a fantastical and witty adventure story.
The prose is beautiful written, it shows humor, seriousness, danger etc... it feels like the
author is telling you the story in a bonfire with your favorite smores.
Two young boys get the opportunity to go on an adventure.
Both of them are flesh out and reliable.
If you are a gamer and fantasy book lover this story is for you to explore.

The Review

This was the perfect way to capture the heart and passion of Fantasy-driven projects, including animated series and video games. The author perfectly captured the voice and atmosphere of the YA Fantasy genre, while redefining the genre by bringing fantasy elements into a modern-day setting. The action and mythos the author builds here feel fresh and put a fresh twist on long-standing fantasy tropes.

The character growth and development of the protagonist and his allies were fun and exhilarating to read. Not only is Joseph a great protagonist to help readers feel represented and connected to the growing fantasy world the author draws readers into, but his friendship with Eric is engaging, as is his rivalry with newcomer Ryan. The character's ability to connect with their hero’s journey through video games will really connect modern YA readers with this genre, while the iconic theme of the hero’s journey feels well represented in this narrative.

The Verdict

A brilliant, entertaining, and grand journey of self-discovery, adventure, and heroism, author J.T. Tenera’s “Efrit’s Journeys: Secrets of the Sealed Forest” is a must-read novel of 2021! A story that balances humor, iconic fantasy mythos, and modern-day character growth, the twists and turns this narrative takes will not only be engaging for readers but will leave them wanting more from this very cinematic writing from the author.

I enjoyed this fantasy tale that follows two teens, Joseph and Eric, as they're invited on an unlikely and mysterious quest to a remote island during their summer vacation. There they encounter a somewhat absentminded professor, a friend with an unusual talent, and are thrown into a dangerous mission with very little warning or preparation. There are lots of video game parallels as their real life adventure unfolds, and I think gamers will particularly enjoy those references. The writing and plot seems most appropriate to a middle grade reader even though the protagonists are older teens, and there are a few editing issues, but overall a fun story with lots of original details in the obstacles the friends must overcome along the way. I also appreciated the contrast between the thoughtful and cautious Joseph and his more impulsive friend Eric. This made for a believable and entertaining dynamic as they muddle through a challenge they aren't quite prepared for as best they can. Sets the stage for a sequel where hopefully the stakes will be raised even higher, but this is a promising debut by an imaginative author.

"Erift's Journeys: Secrets of the Sealed Forest," by JT Tenera is a fun, charming fantasy/adventure novel, telling the story of two friends, Joseph and Eric, who are pulled into a world where magic is real and creation is in danger. They travel to the Murean Islands and meet with a coffee-fueled, scatterbrained professor who introduces them to the world.

I found the writing to be really fun and easy to follow. The characters are all likable, but I found that the protagonist, Joseph was my favorite. It has the feel of an RPG-style video game, but it's not LitRPG (meaning, they don't actually go into a video game).

Only a couple minor negatives for me. Occasionally, it felt like the characters were running in circles, either because of the professor, or random tech malfunctions, but I feel like there could've been more story in there. It never lost my attention, but I did want them to move a little faster at times. There are also a couple storylines that didn't really wrap up, but there is a sequel out, and I liked this one enough that I plan on reading the next one, so I suppose I'll find out in book 2!

Amazing start to a series.

I gave this book a strong 4 stars. The pacing in the beginning was a little slow for me, however it does pick up. The way the friendship was written was very well done and I love the elements of magic and world building. I would highly recommend this book to any teen or young adult.

"Secrets of the Sealed Forest" is the first book in the series called "Erift's Journeys". It follows two best friends, Joseph and Eric, and how they leave home to visit a professor on a secret island, thinking they're going to get to test play a new video game. When they arrive though, it turns out the professor has a lot more to show them than just a simple game. The boys are thrust into a new world of magic.

As a whole, I'd definitely call this a middle grade book. Except for the main character Joseph and maybe one of the antagonist, Ryan, all characters are relatively two dimensional. The humor is simple, often visual in nature, and the plot and characters actions are mostly straight-forward. The main characters act younger than they are - at first I thought I was following two twelve-years-old, then maybe fourteen-year-olds, but it turns out they're sixteen seventeen instead. For a large part of the story they act younger than that.

I think the visual humor and the fun characters are one of the definite strengths of this story. Eric the best friend is a loudmouthed, hotheaded comic relief and the professor is a chaotic genius who drinks too much coffee and never thinks things through in his haste. The story is peppered with humorous episodes, mainly provided by Eric or the professor, that are easy to visualize, much like watching a movie.

Despite the cast being one of the book's strengths, there are flaws to be found. For one, the dialogue sometimes comes off highly unnatural. There's also the fact that this book has an all male cast. There isn't a single girl or woman present who would be introduced by name or have any sort of actual agency. The most memorable women in this story are a woman Joseph runs into, a cleaning lady at a hotel (both of which only appear for a moment) and a "feminine voice" who Joseph hears in his dreams. We don't know much about this voice, but she gives off the impression that she's likely a damsel in distress who needs saving and/or freeing in a later installment.

At 330 pages this is quite the long novel to be middle grade. It's also only just the first book in a series that is confirmed to consist of at least three installments, maybe more. It takes five chapters and about a hundred pages before the magical fun begins. There are several scenes that could be skipped because they have little to no importance to the plot that slow down the story. There are also consistency issues that speak of too little developmental editing.

In fact, my biggest issue with this book is the glaring lack of professional editing. The plot is fun, interesting and makes for a promising start of a series. The characters are intriguing. I liked all these things (except for the utter lack of women or girls, which is frankly disappointing for an adventure published in this day and age), but reading this kept my inner editor very busy. Granted I am a strict reviewer and I know I'm more particular about the technicalities than most readers are, but not even having the physical copy in my hands, the finished work, could combat the feeling of reading an unpolished manuscript. This story would benefit of heavy editing on all stages to reach its full potential and there's really no way around it.

The core plot is interesting and the characters are enjoyable, but there is only so far those things get a story, especially with so many buts. I'm giving it 1.5-2 stars, rounded up to 2, which translates to "it was an okay read" on GoodReads' suggested scale. My average rating is 3.18 across 173 books as of right now.

I was gifted a physical copy of the book and I'm willingly leaving this review. The copy was a (surprisingly) large paperback of good quality and the cover is very pretty.

The Magic of Friendship and Adventure
What would you do if a letter promised you an all-expense-paid tropical adventure with a secret game prototype? J.T. Tenera explores this very idea in Secrets of the Sealed Forest, delivering a tale that blends relatable teenage mischief with the allure of magical mystery.

History and the Heart of Exploration
Since the days of Homer’s Odyssey, humans have sought stories that take them beyond the ordinary. This book, though modern in setting, carries the same age-old spirit of adventure. Through its gaming culture references, it taps into a generation raised on virtual quests, seamlessly transitioning to a real-world fantasy where the stakes are higher.

The Unspoken Consequences of Dreams
Dreams are the starting point of Joseph Erift’s journey, but the story subtly raises a deeper question: Are dreams merely escapism, or are they a call to action? Joseph’s vivid visions blur the line between reality and the fantastical, forcing readers to reflect on how much our waking world is shaped by imagination.

Stats and Science Behind Gamers’ Minds
Research shows that gamers exhibit enhanced problem-solving skills and creativity—qualities Joseph and Eric must rely on as they navigate their tropical mystery. Tenera weaves gaming culture into the plot, giving readers a nod to the intellectual benefits of their favorite pastime while reminding them of the importance of balance.

A Fresh Take on Magical Fiction
Unlike classic fantasy, this story is rooted in the familiar—high school dynamics, modern gadgets, and relatable teenage rebellion. Yet it offers surprises, such as Professor Thessit’s enigmatic experiments, that invite comparisons to the quirky brilliance of Doc Brown from Back to the Future. The balance of the extraordinary with the everyday makes it uniquely engaging.

Favorite Quote and Why It Matters
“Every adventure starts with a dream.” This sentiment from the mysterious old man encapsulates the book’s heart: a call to embrace the unknown. It reminds us that adventure isn’t bound to age or circumstance; it’s about daring to chase the impossible.

Who Should Read This Book?
Ideal for teenagers, gamers, and fans of coming-of-age stories, this book resonates with readers who enjoy light-hearted yet meaningful adventures. Those who appreciate Rick Riordan or Ernest Cline will find familiar joys here. However, readers seeking heavy philosophical or high-stakes drama might find the story’s tone too light.

Content Warning
The book contains mild fantasy violence (e.g., a battle in Joseph’s dream) and characters sneaking away from home. These elements are handled appropriately and are unlikely to concern most readers.

Disclaimer: This a review of the 2nd Edition provided by the author in advance

Title: A novel-length intro

Is this a story my 17-year old self would enjoy? This is a question I don't like to ask because in my opinion, a good novel can be enjoyed even outside a specific age group. In this case, I believe that still applies. I think maybe 17-year old self could find some enjoyment, but not any more than my current self.

To be fair, I found the first chapter interesting enough that I intended to buy the book while it was still first edition, but the author was very kind to warn me that a second edition was on the way and best to wait for that. What I didn't realize though was chapter 1 really just part 1 of a a really long setup. It takes a long time before it feels anything is really happening. Part of this is we have multiple dream sequences, a few spells, and yet no change in Joseph's behavior or attitude towards magic. Similarly, whenever we get close to getting an explanation of the system, it keeps getting postponed. As a result, this real life bait-and-switch gets tiring and slows the pace dramatically.

As proof this is all just to setup the rest of the series, the book itself says the first boss appears at the 91% mark of the book. That isn't to say there isn't action beforehand, some is pretty creative, but a real fight where both sides can actually fight doesn't occur until that point, despite training occurring much earlier though fairly late in its own respect. On the bright side, that final fight scene and magic system do give hope for the rest of the series to be enjoyed, I just wish it didn't take so long to get that payoff.

One thing I don't hold much hope for though is character development. The book begins with lies, continues with more lies, and ends with the primary liar instructing the kids to lie again. And this is in spite of him claiming he has learned his lessons and that the kids should not trust him. There is only one case where Joseph actually does the smart thing, only to fall for the same trick again moments later. No one truly learns anything despite they should have died multiple times and the stupidity just gets frustrating and contributes to the feeling of lack of progress.

The author is creative with the world he builds and that is something I enjoyed seeing. However, the slow pacing, constant lying, and no growth of characters really bring it down. Hopefully book 2 will change all of that now that the setup is done.

Erift’s Journeys: Secrets of the Sealed Forest” by J.T. Tenera offers a thrilling adventure that sparkles with heart-warming magical occurrences inspired by a video game fantasy.

The storyline follows the ecstatic journey of Joseph Erift and his friend Erick who have received an unbelievably fabulous invitation to attend a fully paid vacation to the breathtaking tropical resort islands of Murean where they would attend a demonstration of a brand-new game launch courtesy of their unique abilities and skills. Joseph can’t believe the contents of the letter, but a quick search online has him dash out of the house as fast as possible to share the breaking news with Erick. The invitation has the duo gripped by deep anxiety and intense awe as they question its authenticity as well as the risk they would be exposing themselves to owing to the host’s last words- ‘Please tell no one…’

As one would expect, the promise that this trip would be the most amazing expedition into the world of science and adventure they have ever had, has the duo plot a plan to sneak to the airport at nightfall leaving nothing but notes for the parents to read. Author Tenera will have you glued to your seat as the adrenalizing voyage by the two minors comes to life. Readers will find their airport experience suspenseful particularly when the airport personnel questions their age and notices the absence of parents to accompany them.

This is a stunning novel that will have readers of all ages engaged in its breathtaking and perfectly pitched fantasy. The characters’ solid relationship after discovering the truth about the invitation is the author’s masterstroke through which the novel sparks. However, their decision to leave home without informing their parents may spark a social debate in various circles. Deep secrets and shocking revelations when they land in Murean are clever twists and turns that make the read more exciting.

“Erift’s Journeys: Secrets of the Sealed Forest by J.T. Tenera” is a well-crafted five-star read that features heavy themes of video games and magic, making it a delightful read, especially for young readers. It has the potential of becoming a best-seller due to the author’s clever combination of adventure, magic, fantasy, and action.

Joseph and Eric can’t wait to start their summer vacation filled with video games and pizza ’til sunrise. But when the two best friends receive an unexpected invitation to try out the most anticipated game of the year at an exclusive tropical island resort, they jump at the opportunity. However, once they arrive, they are thrown into a fantastical adventure where nothing is what it seems. Friends and foes must be sorted, puzzles deciphered, and their own hidden abilities discovered. They will have to fight with all they have because life is not a video game, and there’s no respawning.

In Erift’s Journeys: Secrets of the Sealed Forest, author J.T. Tenera gives us a “finding one’s true self” adventure filled with action and video game references. The main characters go through various settings trying to stop an evil force from being released into the world. There are moments of calm in the book while the main characters enjoy a tropical vacation and meet new friends, followed by fast-paced danger when they encounter enemies much stronger than they are. The heroes are never guaranteed a win in their fights and end up seriously hurt at times. Characters “level up” throughout the book, just as video game characters would. In fact, the book is filled with references to video games – “tutorials” where they learn about hidden abilities and magic spells, new weapons and items found during quests, and a band of characters with specialized skills.

Younger readers may also connect to game streaming references, with one of the main characters trying to build a subscriber base. I felt at times there were many cryptic messages and long-winded explanations that didn’t add much to the storyline. Young readers will find characters they can identify and relate to, such as the arrogant, wealthy classmate with a posse and a slightly crazy scientist/professor with exploding inventions.

Erift’s Journeys: Secrets of The Sealed Forest ends with many questions unanswered. This is the perfect lead-in to the next book in the series. This coming-of-age novel for young adults will entertain them with action and adventure on a topic they love, video games.

Which gamer doesn’t imagine himself in a real-life adventure? Yeah, yeah virtual reality is much safer and exciting but have you never played zombie games and thought, if it was a real zombie apocalypse, you’d have experience about how to survive?
Well, I love novels about gamers like Ready Player One. This book, however, is pretty different. A gamer sent on a real-life adventure which he didn’t even ask for! Even though the first half of the book is a bit slow-paced since you’re just being introduced to characters and the premise is being built, the book really catches up in the second half. You already expect someone who adores video games to be creative and imaginative but Joseph was just the perfect guy to be in this story. I loved his authenticity and honest reactions. Since it’s meant for middle grade and young adult readers, I just know the kids the author was building the relatability factor for. And I adore Eric. He’s the scared loud guy who is trying to prove that he’s tough and sensible. And the descriptions of the magical world are so vivid, it really sucks you in.
The plot kind of drags in the beginning and is a bit rushed in the end but since the author is really trying to ensure that you can imagine everything on the page, I didn’t really mind. It’s actually why the only thing I wanted more from this novel is that the story should’ve continued a bit longer. I was having fun reading it and I’m sure anyone who picks up this book would feel the same.

“Secrets of the Sealed Forest” introduces Joseph Erift and Eric- two high school buddies and gamers who receive a mysterious invitation for an all-expense paid trip to an island for a sneak preview of a popular video game. While thoughts that this may be too good to be true float through their minds, they can’t pass up on the opportunity and sneak off for an adventure.

Overall, I enjoyed this story. The three main characters of Eric, Joseph, and Professor Ben each had their own personalities, strengths, weaknesses, and quirks. The interactions and communication especially between the two eleven-graders felt authentic and was amusing to read. I found the parent factor a little breezed over and wish some kind of excuse or something would have covered that up a bit more. I also thought the pacing was a little off. I could see the potential here, this would make a pretty good series if executed well. I felt like it was a bit of a journey to get through the story myself because of all the standing dialogue.

I enjoyed the world building, I enjoyed the different approach to magic, there were some things that I haven’t seen before when it came to the main characters believing in magic.

There could have been more journey and less standing around and talking about things, which is my main issue with this. I felt like more could have been done, the action could have happened sooner.

This is a very fun book for the genre. Absolutely directed towards the young adult but enjoyable for anyone who likes adventure or even RPG gaming. You can tell the author was influenced by video games and it shows in the storytelling. The book starts off running and keeps pace during the whole book. It keeps you asking what will happen next as the story progresses. From sneaking out of the house to going to paradise and ending up in a ancient magical place you don't know where the characters will end up next. Maybe there will be dreams that seem oddly real? Each character in the book has a unique personality. As far as a first book in a series it is very entertaining. Anyone fans of the YA Harry Potter or Percy Jackson or even just RPG games should find this very enjoyable. Can't wait to see how book 2 takes off.

Full Disclosure first and foremost, I was gifted this book by the author. That out of the way, I am so glad that I was gifted this particular book. What an incredible addition to the young adult adventure fantasy genre. I don’t want to say too much here in order to stay out of spoiler territory, but this took me on a ride. The characters are interesting, the story is thrilling, and growing up interested in the same sort of stuff that the young MC is interested in this is exactly the sort of story my young mind would fantasize myself into. Video games, magic, heroism, what young adult would not be enthralled by this tale? I had reviewed an earlier version and criticized some of the pacing of the story, and that is mostly fixed. The story can go faster or slower in parts, but that’s exactly what stories do. This book is a roller coaster, and I simply can’t wait to ride the next one.

Erifts's Journeys: Secrets of the Sealed Forest is a fantasy adventure for young and older readers alike! After being introduced to the secrets of Magic, Joseph and Eric embark on an epic quest on a hidden tropical island. The two best friends discover their own intrinsic, mystical powers during their journey into a magical realm of secrets, enchantment, and adventure. This tale puts a modern spin on a coming-of-age journey that leaves the reader with many smiles and "Ha!"-moments. Anyone that loves fantasy, mystery, and good, clean fun will definitely enjoy this story! This is part one of a multi-book series, and after reading this first installment, I'm definitely hyped to experience the next one!

This started a little slowly for me; once Joseph and Eric started to be involved in magic and with the airship journeys, the story picked up pace and I enjoyed it immensely. I thought the two main characters were well developed and played off one another well, too. When the boy from school turned up on the island too, I thought that he would have an integral part in the story, but he wasn’t mentioned further. Maybe, his role will be developed in future stories. I would, definitely, read further books by this author, whose expression and style are excellent. I received a complimentary book from the author via Voracious Readers Only.

A fantastical adventure, written in a very generation-appropriate style. The author clearly knows their audience, and the writing reflects that. Young adults who enjoy video games will especially be drawn in by the ‘gaming’ context the story creates.

The descriptive writing makes it easy to imagine the out worldly scenarios throughout the book. The characters are so well-developed, and you really feel like you're in the story with them.

The author's introductory quote sums up this book perfectly: For anyone who has ever had a dream to chase, whether you’re young or young at heart, adventure is waiting for you.

I can't wait to see what other adventures await!

this was a great start to the Erift's Journeys series, it was what I was hoping for in a young adult novel. The characters were interesting and worked in the universe that was set. I enjoyed the way J.T. Tenera wrote this and can't wait to read more from them.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

this book was kind of ehh. i received a free copy from this site called voracious readers only and it sounded cool but it was kind of slow and there wasn't a whole lot of real action. the only good thing i can really say is that it was funny and at least there was no useless romance
