When Scarlett West’s useless husband, Luke walks out one day and never returns, she’s left to try and make a new life for herself and her four-year-old daughter, Ava. But with debts mounting, there’s only one place she can go…
Returning home to the village where she grew up, Scarlett starts to slowly rebuild her life. Their cottage is beautiful, Scarlett has a new job and also the support of her family and friends. Maybe this is the second chance she so desperately needs?
And then there’s Cameron Ellis, Scarlett’s gorgeous new boss. Everyone thinks Scarlett and Cameron are perfect for each other, and as Scarlett spends more and more time with him, she begins to think that maybe he could be part of their new future, too.
That is until Luke returns, desperate to get his family back….

A lovely easy read about a mum starting her life again with her daughter. Everything is going well from her husband walking out on them and then she starts receiving warning text messages from an unknown number. This book made me laugh and cry and is a lovely story of starting again but with bumps along the way.
I have been a fan of Jo's books since reading the Cornish midwife series. She writes so beautifully about family, friends, and relationships that I was sad when I got to the end. I will need to find another book to read before I get my copy of the Cornish Country Hospital book next month . Well done Jo
After finishing the amazing midwife series 😍, I had to read another of Jo’s books. This certainly didn’t disappoint! A wonderful story, with little twists and turns which certainly made it difficult to put down. So easy to read too which is perfect for evening reading when you are ‘past your best’!
I thought this book was so good I didn’t like to put it down but I read it over two days and enjoyed every sentence. I can certainly recommend this book.
This was a great story and beautifully written. The characters are very likeable and realistic. This book was very inspiring and uplifting once all the family drama gets resolved. I recommend this book. As always happy reading.
Jo Bartlett has written a heart warming story of a family trying to survive through desertion and a devastating accident. Will the husband who deserted them step up or will it be the handsome teacher who always put others first?
“Husband goes out for eggs” is great way to describe this ending! That statement will be understood by those that have read the book. This story will keep you guessing. I enjoyed it very much!
It's a very different read from Jo other books. I enjoyed it, especially when I could make out the type of character Luke was. I loved Scarlett and Amy.
I absolutely loved this story from Jo, I was forever holding my breath and trying to get through the words fast enough to find out what was happening next .
Very cute, easy to follow, easily decipherable plot but the MMC is swoon worthy in how much of an upstanding gent he is. Jo Bartlett writes well and I like that her FMC’s are not perfect. Lovely little read
A lovely read about a mother's love and her wish to be loved. I really enjoyed this book about Scarlett who moves back to her childhood home with her daughter once her useless husband goes out for eggs and never returns ....She returns to teaching and makes friends...she soon is falling for the lovely Cam....then things change ....x
Generally, I'd describe this book as lovely (I listened to the audio book). You root for the characters and want only the best for them, and Cam is a good love interest. Ava's accident is a very unexpected twist and this made the book more exciting for me. Luke really is a two dimensional villain, which was the main flaw for me - he was a plot device rather than a character. Overall, an enjoyable read.
