When Dad dies, I’m shocked to discover my family’s lies in the secret town of Fable. It sucks to return to the Sun pack that I fled. It sucks worse to be thrown into a dangerous game, which will end in my official wolf mating with the winner...unless I’m the victor.
Of course, I refuse. I’m 17, for wolf’s sake. But wolf politics are savage, and Mom gives me two commands as cold as the snowstorm hitting town.
#1 Join the Wolf Games
#2 Win
But then, I meet them. The two gorgeous shifters from rival packs, who are entering the games. Are they with or against me?
Hunter, the scorching-hot, mysterious Moon Wolf and my first crush.
And Ri, the brooding Irish Shadow Wolf and my enemy.
They’re as ruthless as Mom and fiercely determined to win for their packs. I've found myself in the middle of a war that could tear me apart, body and soul.
Except, what if my greatest secret is the wolf inside me?
Wolf Trials is a full length Fated Mate Shifter Romance novel and the first installment in The Shadowmate series. A paranormal wolf romance packed with a heart-wrenching atmosphere, suspenseful adventure, and a romantic addiction that will keep you reading long into the night. If you’re a fan of Leia Stone, Jaymin Eve, Kelly St. Claire, and Linsey Hall, this story is made for you.
Mila Young tackles everything with the zeal and bravado of the fairytale heroes she grew up reading about. She slays monsters, real and imaginary, like there's no tomorrow. By day she rocks a keyboard as a marketing extraordinaire. At night she battles with her mighty pen-sword, creating fairytale retellings, and sexy ever after tales.
Well the synopsis had me feeling this would be a good one for me, however there were some issues.
There are 3 POV's which I have read this type before and not had an issue. In this series each POV revisits what we just went through with the previous character. It is like we keep looking at the same situation through a different pair of eyes. This led me to feel a good deal of repetitious information. Leaving me to struggle to finish this read.
No great love or passionate connection either. Is there potential? Yes. The FMC is wishy washy when it comes to her affections and her decisions making.
I was so incredibly excited about this book! I have to admit that Mila Young and I don't always have a click (personal preference), but I do usually have a click with Rosemary Johns. I was therefore also a little bit nervous, but the synopsis just sounded too good and there was no way I was gonna say no to the chance to read an arc for this book. So, yesterday morning I crossed all my fingers and started reading, hoping I was gonna love it.
This book is incredibly addictive and amazingly well paced. The writing styles and plot styles of both authors are mixing so incredibly well in this book. I'm sure that fans of either author are gonna love the result of their combined effort. The authors take their time to introduce the world and the characters to us, but they do so in a way that it's still interesting and exciting, especially because there are some nice action scenes in between the more emotional ones.
The emotional scenes were true gems however. All the emotions were vivid and raw and it was so easy to relate to the characters and what they were going through because I could really feel their emotions and how their hearts and souls were breaking at times. I love how all those characters therefore became more than fierce wolves trying to become Alphas. They all experienced hurt and loss and sacrifice and therefore also desire and longing and wishes.
On top of that I loved the politics in this book! Since we're spending time in both the mind of a Sun Wolf, a Moon Wolf and a Shadow Wolf we see all sides of the current situation and we understand why each of them wants and even needs to change the status quo. But, all the other players also come with their own agenda, wishes and goals and more than once ugly games are played to win in the end. I can't wait to see how this all continues, especially after that intense cliffhanger!
Wynter (Wyn) is returning home after her fathers death. Wyn is a hybrid, her father human her mother the Alpha of the all the packs. Wyn and her father left the pack because Wyn was sick and needed human doctors. When she returns to the pack she bumps into Ryan (Ri) she is drawn to him but he has secrets. This is a brilliant first in series, the story draws you in and keeps your attention. I can't wait for the next book
This book was soo good. I was hooked from the very beginning. Wynter is forced to return to her pack after her father dies. The town is still full of lies and her mother is even worse than she was before. Wynter must enter and survive the wolf trials. But things are not all they seem and she is in for a wild ride.
I loved reading Wolf Trials .. The characters are wonderful and full of surprises. With every page after reading it I wanted more. Wyn or Wynter is an amazing character with surprising attributes to the story that every book needs. Ri is is a also an amazing character with his own attributes.. there is also Hunter.. his attributes are wonderful. All 3 make the story. Wow.. what an ending... I loved it and didn't see it coming... I can't wait to read the next book.
Holy cow! Wynter is a bundle of mystery, but shes also girl next door finding her strength. Controlling mother, loving father, sickness, supernatural, mystery. There is a major cliffhanger, but it the book is still a must read !!
WOOOOHOOO! Let the Trials begin!! And grab your own now! SO GOOD!🥰
Ok...where do I even begin....I ❤ Mila Young's writing, and I haven't had a chance to read anything by Rosemary A. Johns yet...and now I am so sorry for this...I freaking love this story! I am totally having a love affair with wolf shifters right now..and dang! This story hit all my buttons! Wynter was a half human and half wolf shifter..she was taken by her human father to live with him in the human world...her Mother was the Alpha of the Sun pack...and Wynter came back after her father died in a car accident. Addison is married to her mother...who tries to be nice to her..he was forced into the marriage. They force Wynter to compete in the wolf Trials or her mother will put Iris..her quiet little friend in instead. There is a force called the deep coming..( deep freeze) and they are looking for a new Alpha to bring the three packs together under one pack...so they do the Wolf Trials which haven't been done in years and years... Sun pack contestants are Wynter, Ballard (a jerk) and Page ( a phoney?) Shadows pack Ri (Ryan from Ireland) and his sister Brey and Teo a quiet guy from their pack. Their pack leader is their Uncle Jack who is also the healer. And the last pack who they consider the weak and service pack...Flint the pack leader, Hunter (Wynters childhood friend ), Parker ( Hunters foster brother), and Jax A twin to Dax who was injured by Ballard earlier in the week....I am really into this one...lol I don't even know how to do a good review for it. It is just so dang good! The world building is excellent and characters jump off the page and grab hold of you. It's just fabulous!! You should really get this one!!
Wolf Trials, the first book in the Shadowmate series by Mila Young and R.A. Johns was an intriguing immersion into a unique new tale of wolf shifters and their pack dynamics.
Wynter, our shy FMC is a wolf hybrid, the daughter of the Sun Wolf alpha and a human. Oftentimes misunderstood and looked down upon due to her mixed heritage, she also had the misfortune of being “sick”, so never fit into the Sun Wolf pack. Leaving the pack with her human father, they return to the human world for treatment…until a sad misfortune means that Wynter must now return to the pack.
Upon returning home she comes across another mysterious wolf in the woods, a Shadow Wolf named Ri, who has her wolf reacting in the first time since forever. Both intrigued by her reactions as well as upset at his domineering ways, Wynter continues back home where she finds her mom is just as aloof and distance as always—and she instantly regrets having to return. Though she’s anxious to connect back with her childhood bff, Hunter, a Moon Wolf—even though she soon realizes that apparently a lot has changed in the four years since she’s been gone….
We soon discover that her mom and the Fearless, nameless leaders of all three packs, have plans to enact the Wolf Trials—something that hasnt happened in over a century. They tell the packs that in order to survive the possibility of a perpetual winter that a new Alpha must be chosen by the Wolf Trials—and the wolf that survives will become the alpha and marry Wynter—who is also forced to compete by her mother with the caveat that if she wins, she gets to choose her mate. What ensues next is a trial where only nine wolves will compete…but all all will survive.
Overall this is a fun new read that is very well written with a variety of captivating characters and an intriguing storyline and twist filled plot you just can’t stop reading. With a heart breaking tragic ending Young and Johns leaves you with a killer cliffhanger ending making this a definite must read series!
Wolf Trials is the first book in Mila Young’s and R.A. Johns’s new paranormal romance novel, The Shadowmate series and you are not going to want to miss this book. Wynter is a hybrid wolf, part human- part wolf. She’s returning home for the first time since her father swept her away from the pack. His passing has her coming back home, but she’s not prepared for what is waiting for her. Wolf Trials is an engaging upper YA paranormal romance novel. The author introduces readers to a variety of characters. Some you are going to be drawn to and others you are going to truly despise. Wyn is a hybrid wolf thinking that she’s simply coming home a little over a month after the passing of her dad. She has no idea that something huge is waiting for her and that her mother intends to use her as a pawn to retain the power she has clung to. These two authors work together to write a truly interesting novel that grabbed my attention from the first page. I eagerly delved deeper into this book to learn more about the various characters. Each chapter is dedicated to a specific character and a page at a time you gain a little insight at a time about them. I have mixed feelings toward one of the guys because on one hand, he seems to care about Wyn, but when the Trials are announced he envisions the Sun Wolves serving them for a change. It pricks my irritation because I think that he should want true change, not a reversal of roles. Granted, Wyn irritates me with a dumb choice that she in turn makes. She’s forced into the Trials via threat, but to turn around and think that running away is the answer? She’s risking another’s life to save her own skin. The romance is gradually building and I have some thoughts as to where things are going. I’m crossing my fingers at this point that things are heading in the direction I hope they are. LOL! Watch me be disappointed. The ending has a strange twist, but I’m eager to learn how the characters react and what happens next. I’m rating this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. This book is a good choice to pick up if you enjoy paranormal romance with a sense of impending doom. I’m definitely recommending this book and I can’t wait for what comes next.

I voluntarily reviewed a copy of "WOLF TRIALS" Loved this book written by two fabulous authors Mila Young/Rosemary A Johns did an outstanding job writing this story full of suspense, intrigue, violence, danger, secrets, it grabs you from beginning to end. Wynter 17grs old half wolf/human returns to Fable a small she left with her father who's now dead her mother always thought her weak but informs her she'll be entering the Wolf Trial Games winner gets her as a mate & they become Alpha. Winters mother is Alpha of Fable & Sun Wolf Pack she power hungry ruthless commanding bring a hybrid everyone thought she nothing but surprise she was so much more they'll soon come to see. Hunter is a hidden Alpha for Moon Wolf Pack she's had a crush on then there's Ri from the Shadow Wolf Pack a Protector training to become a healer of the Shadow Pack & her enemy they'll be part of Games. I definitely recommend to get this amazing book its heartwrenching what Wynter had to go through all lies, secrets, her mother is a piece of work the ending is shocking so looking forward to the next book in this series to see what happens next thus is one book you don't want miss getting.
Just wow. There is so much secrets and unknown in here. We are served tiny details here and there and getting a new secret or question. Wynter might not be in her element, but she is great person, filled with greatest values and however most of time she have her head all around the places she do her best. She might have not keep completely cool around Ri and Hunter but she cope with a lot already. Ri have his own demons to fight with, and Hunter have lots on his plate as well. There is so much tension in here: between wolf tribes, between each participant, between Alpha and pretty much everyone, between Ri and Wyn, Wyn and Hunter, Hunter and Ri and even inside of each of them. It’s incredibly written story surprising us at many occasions. Cliffhanger killed me, and I would kill to could read next part right away.
I wasn't sure what to expect, I'm not big on shifter books but I really loved this book. Even with the cliffhanger, it was still a great book. It is well written and you are hooked right away. I literally read this book in one evening. I just couldn't put it down. I have found with cowrites you can really tell when the author changes. But this book was so smooth and I have no idea who wrote what. It is full of action. It will make you laugh, keep you on the edge of your seat and even brought tears to my eyes. Wynter is returning to her mother and pack. She had been living in the human world with her father. This will not be easy to do but Wynter has more inner strength than most people. She is very strong and makes this book just epic!! I highly recommend this book!!
Dystopian coming of age werewolf political thriller romance. These are not words I ever expected to string together, but they’re the best description I have of what I just read. I am blown away and left nearly speechless. Wynter is a complex heroine, and I couldn’t help but be moved by her situation. I have so many questions and that ending has left me howling like a banshee into the night. “NO……………..!” I’m not even going to try to guess what may be coming next. I’m just going to count down the days until the new book is available and hang on for the ride. I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book from the author.
This book was great fun to read and i cant wait for the next one to come out, i have to admit, not living the cliff hanger at the end!! As a huge fan of paranormal romance and fated mates stories this one is right up there so definitely looking forward to the next installment of Wynter, Hunter and Ri.. Cant wait to see where the story will go. This review was given ain reciept for a free ARC of the book
First book in the series so expect a cliffhanger. The main character is Wyn. Through her we meet Hunter and Ri. We also learn some of the past for all three. The story introduces you to the world of wolves. There are three types/packs of wolves with one alpha. We learn the dynamics within and where Wyn falls within it. Expect plenty of twists and we just get started in the shifter adventure.
A very exciting start to the series! 😁 There's a lot to love about this new story; the impressive world building; the entertaining storyline; the intriguing characters; a mouth watering love triangle. I love how Wynter doesn't let her limitations hold her back. I love how different Ri and Hunter are, like Yin and Yang, but when you look deeper, it seems they could be a lot more like each other than first appears. With a killer cliffhanger, I really hope the next book comes out soon. 😍
This book gives me both, hunger games, and Brave vibes. I loved it. Wyn is heartbroken she has to go back to her pack after the loss she’s endured, but dealing with her mother is enough to drive anyone crazy. The special treatment her mother gives sun wolves makes Wyns gut churn, but more than that she misses her best friend. Him not being a sun wolf, and the things her mother did to him as a child because of it are painful to think about, but when running in the wolf games gives her a chance to change things and save people, she feels compelled to do so. Now if she can only survive the dangerous games, and the other wolves, she might have a chance to fix her mother’s wrongs. But will the draw she feels to some of her competition be her downfall? With what’s at stake for the prize of the games, she’s determined to win. But at what cost?
I love both of these authors writing style and could not get enough of their cowrite! Wynter is an interesting character and she is also a hybrid wolf that was taken away from the wolf community by her father. When an accident brings her back her mother puts her as a prize in the trials. Her mother is the Alpha and she wants to unit all of the packs. We get to meet Hinter and Ry along the way and get to learn more about them as characters. I felt that the world byilding in this book was interesting and couldn't put the book down. I am excited to see what will happen next in this series but still curious to see how the relationships will develop.
This was an outstanding start to a new series, loved everything from start to finish, the characters, storyline and everything in between, action twists and turns, so looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
Drawn, after her father's death, back into the pack she left behind, Wyn must come to terms with the Alpha mother she's never really known and her unwanted position of Sun Pack princess. But as the memories come creeping back, it soon becomes obvious that gilded dross is just that and nothing more. Now, with the announcement by the Fearless, she is pulled into a world with more questions and secrets than she may have time to survive.
Great start to the Shadowmate series. I love the works of both Mila and Rosemary so when I heard they were co writing a book I was ecstatic. The premise of this story was great, I loved the whole idea of the wolf trials and games and enjoyed the world building. They characters were interesting and I enjoyed seeing how they developed throughout the book. Looking forward too reading more of this series.
Winter is broken. She is a wolf hybrid who doesn’t fit into the sun pack. With her dad gone, and her mom using her as a grand prize, she must win the trials. But there are two men she can’t stop thinking about, Hunter and Ri. This is so well written and the characters feel so real! I can’t wait for the next book!
This is a really good start to this series. A well written collaboration this is exciting and very entertaining and grabbed me from the get go! It’s action packed and has twists to keep you on the edge of your seat! There’s also humour and even occasionally a few tears! Loved the storyline, loved the characters and I look forward to reading more!
Missing her Dad, used by her mom Wynter still is a strong FMC. Wyn enters the wolf games and she must win or become someone's mate. Ahe is attracted to both Hunter and RI but she refuses to be owned.
Wow what a great start to the shadowmates series with plenty of action as Wyn and her fellow wolves Ri and Hunter strive to become the Alpha. This is a compelling tale to read and I can't wait for the continuing story to find out what happens next. This is my honest opinion.
Wynter, Hunter, and Ri(Ryan) have all had hard lives.
Wynter is a hybrid of human and wolf. Her mother is the power hungry Alpha of Fable and specifically of the Sun Wolves. Her father was killed in a car accident. Hunter is a hidden alpha and Wynter's first love. He is also a Moon wolf which is the slave/servant class of wolves in Fable. Ri is a shadow wolf, the wild card of wolves on Fable.
The book starts over with the bus that Wynter is on heading back to Fable after the death of her father that gets into an accident itself. She "meets" Ri in the woods as she walks the rest of the way home. There is a connection that the two fight throughout the book.
Ri is a shadow wolf and protector of the protected blossoms as well as training to be a healer with his uncle. He feels the connection to Wynter and starts to believe his sister's teasing that she just might be his shadowmate.
Hunter on the other hand, is the son of the Alpha's maid. He has fought his own alphaness for much of his life, especially when Wynter was dragged away by her father four years before. Wynter is and always will be Hunter's other half, he has known his entire life and so has Wynter but she was taken before they could have done anything about it. Although these two are the true star crossed loves, much like Romeo and Juliet. Wynter being of the Royal family and Hunter being from the servant, if they ever got together his entire pack would be destroyed by her mother.
The wolf trails put these three as well as two of their siblings, friends, and enemies together to fight for and against each other for the right to be Alpha, but also something more. Wynter's mother has put her up as the prize along with the right to be Alpha to whomever wins the Wolf Games. Either way Wynter is up for the fight of both her life and her freedom but there is also something else on the line, her heart.
Secrets are slowly revealed, lives are fought for and even lost. But this story just leaves you wanting even more. To see who will win. My honest hopes that despite winter coming, Wynter wins not only her first love but the shadownas well. Because no matter how you look at things both the Sun and moon, both create shadows and all three are stronger together than apart.
Wynter has come home, and the fight for life, love, and everyone's freedom has started.
This was a very enjoyable and interesting read. I'm totally feeling this new take on shifters and wolves. You get this sensations that there is something really special about Wynter, but what is it?? This is a slow burn series at the moment. Not sure yet but this could go either way a ménage or RH which will definitely make this a helluva read. As at right now I can't make head or tails on what's going to happen so I guess I'll have to waited and find out who Wynter's mates are but I'm definitely intrigued by Hunter and Ri. Also this only the beginning of the trial and I'm sure the best is yet to come. This is going to be an amazing very interesting journey. As always my reviews are totally voluntarily and no monetary compensation was received and the opinions I have expressed are completely my own.
This story is a great start for The Shadowmate Series. I love the character’s and the story had me so pulled in I couldn’t put the book down. I love the book cover as well. I definitely recommend.
