War Med continues the adventures of the young John McFarland, now a doctor, as he is sent to assist the Red Cross in northern Italy in the summer of 1918. Disappointed that he will miss out on all the medical "action" near the front-line trenches in France, he soon discovers that action and moral struggles come at him from all directions. Happily, he is supported by many new friends, including an energetic young Red Cross volunteer named Ernie. Unhappily, he is challenged by one fellow American doctor, an agnostic, who ridicules John's Christian faith. His nemesis undermines the efforts of John, Ernie, and their friends to provide medical assistance to the Italian Army and civilians as the Germans and Austrians threaten from the north and east. John must call upon all his experience working with the Texas Rangers, during the prior three years, to complete his work. Everyone also faces a new and very serious the "Spanish" flu. War Med continues John's medical and other adventures which began with Tex Med and continued with Follow the Setting Sun and Cousins, covering 1915-1917. "Never a dull moment" is his experience in this book as it has been in all the others.
