GWEN I knew that I would have to see his face, but I never knew it would be in person. Seeing him in person, after all this time, could break me even more. I always had the protection of the TV screen between us, and he never knew I was watching. It's been four years. He shattered me when he left to chase his dream. He proved to me that I was nothing to him. So why now? Why is he trying to contact me?
DEAN We are in danger--no, she is in danger. I need to get to her. To protect her, even if she hates me. Seeing her face again will be easy because leaving her was the hardest thing I have ever done. I had to leave. I thought I was doing the right thing even though it killed me. After all this time, I still want her. I never stopped, but that doesn't matter now. The only thing that matters is her safety. I hope I'm not too late....

Ok starting off I expected this whole story to go a completely different way then it did.
Gwen and Dean were lovers at one point and he just up and leaves, with no explanation. Typical man right? WRONG! Gwen thinks it is just to pursue his dream in the MLB , but in fact it is something way darker.
The events that unfolded as the story progressed were a whirlwind. The emotions were high, stressful at times and then there would be calm after the storm until something else decided to come stir the pot.
Dean shows up on Gwen's doorstep after years of them not speaking. He is flustered, and determined to make sure she is safe and not hurt since he has been receiving threats on his and her life.
Love reunited has never been more anticipated(by me and by them!). They vow to stand by eachothers sides and roll with the punches , things like murder, the mafia, coverups, etc.
It's seems like they have conquered the world, until they are hit with one last tragedy that they will never recover from.
This was an awesome story which had me completely invested. I just wanted to know what happened next, it's an emotional roller coaster. She was able to make you feel each of the characters array of emotions; whether it be fear, love, passion. From the plot, to the relationship, to the drama it was one of a kind . I am ready to see what happens next in the timeline in Book 2.
This is a story that I have been meaning to get to as I had seen some connected to her cowboy romances that she has done. This was a book that was so full of action and intrigue and intrigue and what fabulous spice. I always forget what great steam this author writes in her books. I also liked that this has a different twist on mafia than you normally see. And if you are expecting mafia to look good....don't expect it in this one here. This is a second chance romance where our hero ended things to protect the heroine. But when the danger escalates, he comes for her and helps protect here.
I really had a blast with Batter Up. I am always loving a great baseball romance especially in how this author wrote this in such a unique different aspect you wouldn't see coming. I think what I loved the most about this book is the suspense elements and the characters that we see come into this story. The ending is awful though so just make sure you have the second book to read right away. Its probably one of the worst cliffhangers that I have ever read. So be ready for lots of intensity to this story but also super creative. But fair warning that there is some editing and grammer errors in this one.
I saw this on TT, so I figured why not. It read like a high school essay trying to meet a word count. The story has great potential, but the tedious descriptions left me unable to finish.
WHAT A CLIFFHANGER!! Gwen & Dean were a dream and the suspense throughout the story kept me on edge. Now I have no choice but to jump straight into book 2 of the series & I can't wait!
This is a great debut from Brittany Ann! She has a great group of characters that are super relateable, lovable, and just super fun to follow.
I love that this book is so easy to read. It's just effortless. You won't be able to put this book down... and that ending?!? So glad the next book is already out because that would just be torture!
Congratulations on a beautiful story from an equally beautiful author🖤
I did enjoy this dark sports romance but it felt a little rushed for me. I felt like I didn't get enough of Dean and Gwen's past to understand how deeply they love/d each other so that when they find each other again it feels *very* insta-lovey. I would have liked more of their history and even a little bit of Dean grovelling. Gwen forgives and forgets a little too quickly for my liking and it made it difficult for me to get fully invested in their relationship. There were also a few typos and I'm fairly forgiving with that, it doesn't tend to bother me all that much, but I think this book could benefit from another round of editing.
The suspense was good, the mafia aspect and that cliffhanger kept me interested and the spice was great. Though I couldn't get fully invested in their love story, I was still very much rooting for them and am hoping that all is not what it seems with Dean. iykyk. Because just when you think it's all sunshine and rainbows, Brittany comes in with a barbed wire baseball bat.
I'm very intrigued by all the side characters and am looking forward to getting to know them more throughout the rest of this series. I am especially hoping we get some more of James and Haley. The found family aspect of this book was also really lovely, I am obsessed with Sullie and his Papabear energy.
I absolutely loved this story! It gives you a few twist and turns that will have you out of your chair!!! Starting the second book to the series ASAP! 😍🙌🏼
I’m not a huge sport romance fan but this hit the spot, and makes me want to read more sports romance
I am so upset with the ending of this book. Yes, that’s how I’m going to start this review and I made sure to let the author know. I’m part of her street team so I started reading her books because she’s got some new ones releasing and I wanted to be up to date. I commented in the group chat that I was starting this book and she told me she would see me back here later to yell at her. And she was right! I cried at the end, my heart hurt so bad. Because that ending devastated me in every way. But goddamn, I truly loved this book and the characters. I still think about this book daily.
Gwen was a fantastic MC. I appreciated that she was confident in some ways but still had to work on her confidence in other places. She felt so real to me in that way. I just enjoyed her so much and her POV. And I also adored the chemistry between Dean and Gwen. They communicated so well, after the initial shock of course. But I loved that they were willing to do whatever it took to make their relationship work.
Dean reminded me a lot of Dean from Supernatural and it wasn’t just because of his name. He was bossy and crazy overprotective of the people he loved, and there was nothing wrong with that in the slightest. I enjoyed his character so much. I loved how broody his POVs were. I loved how sensitive he was too. He truly just wanted to be loved by the one person he loved most in the world. I felt for him and I just wanted what was best for him.
Overall, despite my absolute devastation at the end of this book, I am excited to continue with this series. Gwen is an absolute badass and I can’t wait to see her kick ass and take names. I also want her to have her happy ever after because she deserves it so much.
A great book to read, there was a lot suspense which I like, the smut scene were amazing and the cliffhanger was a WTH in the face. I cant wait to read book 2.
I absolutely loved Batter Up - the fact that it is Brittany Ann’s debut novel is so impressive! The storyline had me hooked from the start - infact I was hooked before that as soon as I seen a clip on tiktok lol
I feel as if anything I say will spoil the plot because this book has so many twists, turns and expected moments, it is just amazing! The characters are all fantastic and well thought out, the storyline is genius and the spice is top tier!!
I have seen a lot of reviews regarding the way this book was written but this is a debut so I was able to overlook that and focus on the story and my god was I glad that I did! My jaw has never hit the floor so hard with that ending!
Without spoiling anything - I usually don’t enjoy that type of ending in a book so I did put off moving onto the 2nd book for about 2 months but I am so so glad that I did because this series only gets better - if you get to the ending of Batter Up and you are like me and don’t want to continue at first, please, please do it is so worth it!!
'I let him be my sun. I revolved around him. Letting him be the center of my universe, while I was just a meteor passing through his.'
This book was nothing like I expected it to be. However, it ended up being everything I wanted it to be and more. What do you get when you mix baseball and mafia in the same books? An amazing plot that has a wild ride! So many twists and turns and not knowing who you can trust make this the perfect book!
Gwen is in love with her dean until one day He just up and leaves her to pursue his dreams in the MLB.. or so she thinks. Dean shows up years later just to make sure she is in fact "safe." Then Chaos happens.
I try to keep my reviews spoiler free, so if you want to know what happens next... Read the book! I promise you won't be sorry or disappointed!
~Mutiple POV ~Alphahole baseball player ~Touch her and Unalive ~Spicy ~Mafia ~Second chance
PLEASE BE SURE TO CHECK ALL TW BEFORE READING THIS BOOK.
⚾️Batter up was Brittany’s debut novel and I was a little nervous to read it. I am not the biggest baseball fan (plz don’t hate me 😬) but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was chaos with a splash of baseball.
Four of my favorite things about it were
⚾️ the story flowed nicely, the banter between Dean and Gwen flowed easily, and I LOVED reading a book set in my hometown ♥️🤍
⚾️ the SPICE 😈 (that shower scene though)
⚾️ I love Gewn. I am her, she is me.
⚾️ The cliffy was hard with this book 😬 I’m glad I only had to wait 2 days to get SBS 😅
2023 - I love this books just as much if not more after finishing the series in its entirety. It was like coming home after being away for a long time.
I saw this book and it’s upcoming sequel a lot on TikTok and I was excited about reading it, but it reads very much like a Wattpad book. Despite the sex scenes being very nice, and the story idea being interesting, there were too many grammatical mistakes to make me rate this any higher than two stars. There were also many logical flaws throughout that tore me out of the story. I feel like this book has potential for being good, but could use another couple rounds of heavy editing.
I cannot sing enough praise for Brittany and this amazing work of art that she put together. I did not expect everything that I got out of this book.
When I say you will not be able to put this book down I mean it. Let yourself love Dean in the way he needs to be loved. I will forever hold a special place for Dean.
The sequel is all that I could possibly want in the world.
This is book 1 in the Batter Up series. I had no idea what I was in for but OMG! There multiple POVs and time jumps but this book focuses mainly on Gwen and Dean. The twist and turns of this book were wild! I could not predict where it would go but I was so down for the ride. It was confusing and chaotic but in the best way that kept me hanging on n for the whole ride! The cliffhanger at the end about stopped my heart! How dare Brittany do that to me!!!
I have been meaning to read this series for a while, I loved all the Hallow Ranch books by the same author and have been slowly getting through the Burnout series. As Brittany Ann's books all take place in the same "universe" I had heard an awful lot about Dean, the baseball player who came back from the dead after 5 years, however, this is NOT how I thought it would go down...
It's pretty clear, after reading plenty of Brittany's other books that this is one of her first, it feels rushed, the dialogue isn't the best, it certainly needs editing - there were dozens of typos! - and while an enjoyable read, it wasn't as good as I thought it would be.
I already knew that Dean would disappear for 5 years playing dead, but cannot for the life of me fathom why after falling in love with Gwen he ups and leaves for 4 years with no explanation at all. I get there were threats and he did it to save her, but at the very least, he could have broken up with here, rather than just disappearing? And when he comes back, she just accepts it, within hours?! He left her high and dry for 4YEARS and then when he comes back all is forgiven overnight?!
Also poor Hayley gets kidnapped outside Gwen's front door and they don't even anonymously call the police to get the search going?
I'm sorry, I realise this is just trying to add to the suspense, but I can't get on board with them having a few months together, then nothing for 4 years, then he fakes his own death and disappears for 5 years now?!
Follow up with the "Swing, Batter Swing" review, I read these two back to back in one day.
In conclusion, an entertaining enough read, but not up to Brittany Ann's usual standard, also personally, I can't bear "baby girl" as an endearment, it grated all the way through.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
So a few weeks ago I applied for the ARC for @authorbrittanyann_ new book Grand Slam. Not thinking I stood a chance. I only went and got it. So this week has consisted of reading the series. And it's so freaking good I binged the first 3 books in 3 days.
Gwen- we've all been that heartbroken, lovesick girl who compares every man to the one that broke her. The one that got away. To the what ifs. Constantly searching for answers that you can't give yourself. But most of us don't have that person come back into our life declaring that they left us to protect us.
Dean - one of very rare men who sacrificed himself and his happiness to protect the LOVE OF HIS LIFE. I take the day comes that his face is all over the news announcing his death- but he's alive and must reveal all to Gwen in order to protect them both.
A mafia tale of forced connections, heartbreak, and love. Who knew the baseball world could be so dangerous - and just when you thing everyone's lives can go back to normal, the consequences arrive. Do they get their happily Ever After? Or is one of them destined to live in the dark forever?
🖤 Quotes 🖤
'Dean Connors would be the death of my sanity.'
'I watched her walk away and admired her beautiful curves. I know she has insecurities, but they are irrelevant.'
If you love sports romances and the mafia, check this one out!! You won’t regret it!
⚾️ Reformed playboy ⚾️ Second chance ⚾️ Dual pov ⚾️ Protective mmc ⚾️ No HEA ⚾️ Touch and and you die
Review: This book was not what I was expecting, at all. It was so freaking good. Who would’ve thought baseball and the mafia could connect? Not me, that’s for sure but this book was so well done. Every time I thought I knew where the plot was going, I was wrong. Every time I wanted to trust someone, I was wrong. All the plot twists had me on the edge of my seat. I loved how we got to see not only Gwen and Dean’s prospective but her friend Haley’s too. I loved how protective Dean was. I hated Dean in the beginning but I grew to love him as we got to here the full story on why he left her all those years ago. And to top it off, it was so spicy 🥵 Those scenes were crazy in depth and crazy good! My gosh!! 😳 Don’t get me started on the ending, I’m so mad! A happy ending was in sight, and then just like that, gone. This book was an emotional rollercoaster in the best possible way. Besides the ending, I loved the book. Even with the ending, I highly reccomend!! 4.5/5 ⭐️ 4/5 🌶
"Do you honestly think I would willingly leave the best f*kng thing that’s ever happened to me? Baby girl, you’re my dream. Baseball was my dream for nineteen years until I fell in love with you. I never wanted to lose you.”
WOW...just freaking wow!!!! This is not what I was expecting and I cannot wait to get further in the series. When I found out this series is based very close to home for me I knew I was going to get lost in Brittany's world. It is so fun to read and actually know about the places and landmarks being mentioned throughout the book.
Now, let us get to Dean and Gwen. These two....whew, I was not prepared to like him after how the story starts but it clearly was not long before Dean won my heart. He absolutely worships Gwen and is not afraid to grovel for forgiveness. He is completely straightforward with her from the moment they are reunited. Then there is the way he is so fiercely protective of her. They make a great team.
Wish as I might their reunion did not come without complications which meant plot twists being thrown in and damn...that ending really and truly got me. I am fairly certain my jaw hit the floor. I couldn't believe the author did what she did. So naturally I jumped right into book two!
All of the characters introduced in this first book are great and I look forward to seeing/learning more about them. The whole concept of baseball and mafia mixing together was so intriguing to me that I honestly had to start the series ASAP!
Almost 4 stars Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2022 I love that this new author self-published. We all need more people to show us their creations and believe in themselves. There were things I loved and things that needed a little help. Things I loved: 1. chapters from different character points of view. 2. cliffhanger ending... the author went where not a lot of authors go 3. has a playlist to go with it 4. characters that are flawed and not impossibly perfect
Things that needed help: 1. editing. There were a lot of mistakes, but easy to overlook and didn't disrupt the flow too much 2. back story of the love interests. I wanted more, but it seemed they were already "there"! I wanted to know HOW they fell in love, WHY is their love so strong (other than physical stuff). Maybe there is a PREQUEL that is to be written? 3. I wanted a little more relationship building with side characters (ahem... Collin...especially now that I know there are going to be spin-off stories with them)
Overall, entertaining read and I'm excited to see what else the author has in store for the characters.

⚾️As always check the trigger warnings
⚾️ Quick Synopsis: Gwen had adored Dean from afar for years and she finally had her chance to be with him. Gwen fell in love with Dean before she even recognized it and then Dean was gone to follow his dreams of being a MLB star. Four years have passed and Dean is back and now desperately trying to contact Gwen. Things are not as they seem and now Gwen and Dean lives are in danger because of their past.
⚾️Liked: I could not stop reading this book. I finished it in a few hours while waiting for clients to show at work. I love a good romance and murder mystery/crime read and the author did an amazing job of putting it all together. The strong independent female main character Gwen was well written and her relationship with the Dean definitely did make her weak which I absolutely loved! The twist and turns of this book were predictable at times but also kept me guessing throughout. Sports romance with a twist for the win
3⭐️ - I don’t really know how to feel about this book. It’s marketed as a dark sports romance, this is definitely a second chance romance, but there was so much going on I’m so confused.
***EDIT: while I stick by my rating, this is definitely more like a mafia romance to me? Also, the editing isn’t super great, several spelling errors and typos.
Gwen has been on autopilot for the past few years since the love of her life, Dean, up and left to pursue his MLB career. Having know each other since childhood, and becoming closer during her freshman year of college, she thought she finally found the one and was going to live a long happy life.
Fast forward a four years and Dean shows up back in Gwen’s life, only for them to both see a news story about him being found dead in his apartment. Obviously not dead, Dean let’s Gwen know he’s been receiving threats since they both witnessed a near-death bar fight several years ago, and now they want both he and Gwen dead.
I can’t quite tell what I don’t like about this book, I’m going to read the rest of the series probably, but I’m not sure how I feel about it.
✨Book review✨ 📖: Batter up by Brittany Ann 📚: 59/115 • • • ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 🌶️🌶️🌶️/5 • • • I’m in no way shape or form a sports romance girly, but here comes Brittany making me rethink it😂 This book is first in the Batter up series. In all the books I’ve read I’ve never cried not once, but this one made me teary eyed! I absolutely loved the whole story! I read this book in one sitting it took about four hours. I was up till 4 AM reading, and I did not know that it would end on a cliffhanger! So I did want any bookworm would do, and jumped right into the second one! I am so excited for this series I definitely have a new favorite author! Summary: Gwen is just trying to move on with her life, except the guy from her post who left with so much as a phone call won’t let her. Turns out there both in danger and no one is who they say they are👀
Don’t know what I expected from this one, but it wasn’t what I got.
The plot - This is a sports (baseball) romance, with forced proximity, second chance, mafia and on the run vibes. Smut was a 3.5/5 on the spice scale, very hot scenes! And this… is a cliffhanger. A BS MF CLIFFHANGER?? What is that ending? My poor fuckin heart. Dean and Gwen. I mean.. I’ll be honest, I was gonna DNF around 25%. Because the MMC’s attitude at the start? It’s not it my guy. Consent is 1000% important and sometimes you’ve gotta let a bitch die. However, they got better, they worked together, the plotline after that picked up and was more enjoyable!
The MC - Gwen was a weird one to love? Like I got what kind of character she was but it came off as whiny and annoying for half of it. And then the other half she was a badass who don’t take no shit. Lil bit confused but here for the vibes.
The male counterpart - Dean, again my dude you were a prick at the start and I stand by that. However you sacrificed everything for your girl and I respect that, even if it was a BS cop out.
gwen is in grad school and she still feels the loss of dean. dean and gwen had a whirlwind romance. dean got an offer to play professional baseball and he took it and ditched gwen. they both never stopped thinking about each other.
one day, after a couple years of no communication, dean texts gwen saying she’s in danger. she doesn’t respond which leads dean straight to her doorstep. they basically pick up right where they left off. gwen tried to put up a fight but their attraction was too large to resist.
lots happens and holy moly the cliffy. i nearly had a heart attack but i believe in trust the process and dean and gwen aren’t done yet.
Quotes:
I let him be my sun. I revolved around him, letting him be the center of my universe, while I was just a meteor passing by through his.
“You are my dream, baby. Baseball was my dream for nineteen years, until I fell in love with you. I never wanted to lose you.”
“Because I am the guy who fell in love with the selfless girl who doesn’t give a damn about her life. Just those around her. So, I am the guy who has to give a damn!”
DOES NOT DISAPPOINT !! BRITTANY ANN DID IT AGAIN !!
If you loved breathe for me and sing for me by Brittany Ann then you’ll LOVEEE THIS !!!! From the moment I picked up this book I knew it was going to bed good! I seriously could not put this down and read it in one sitting !!! First of all the storyline is phenomenal and well paced. You get to see both flashbacks and the current build up of the characters love story! And there is no time wasted when it comes to the MC. HE MAKES IT KNOWN THAT HE WANTS HIS GIRL BACK. Like okayyy !! The plot twists did not disappoint at all!! I love how side characters were introduced and you get hooked onto them as well, I’m hoping we see more of them as the series continues. BUT MY GODDDDDD I WAS NOT PREPARED OF THE PLOT TWIST AND CLIFF HANGER THIS BOOK ENDED ON !!! When I tell you I screamed!!! 😭 the built up for the second book was done so well and I am literally running to go and read the second book in the series because I gotta make sure my babies are okay !!
It felt damn good to be back in the Brittany Ann-verse for this series!
This is book 1, and it follows Dean & Gwen. He’s a college baseball player she met and fell in love with. Suddenly, he ghosts her and disappears from her life for 4 years. Now, he he’s back out of the blue because the danger that kept him away, is threatening to hurt Gwen.
Gwen is SO kind. She’s incredibly sweet and caring. A beautiful and selfless soul, and that’s part of why he fell in love with her. She’s been silently holding a candle for Dean, watching his career in the majors and finishing college over these last 4 years. But she has grown a hard shell on the outside, and has gained some fire in her.
Dean: the 6’4 golden blonde hair baseball player with hazel eyes and a beautiful body. 🤤 He has also been holding a candle for Gwen these last 4 years. He fell in love with her in college and never got the chance to tell her, but he won’t let her slip through his hands a second time.
The spice in this is *chef’s kiss* Brittany KNOWS how to write it, ya’ll! Thighs were clenching, I had to put my kindle down a few times to let it process. My god. 🥵🥵 not to mention, he calls her “baby girl” through the entire book. YES!
This book ends on a CLIFFHANGER that’ll leave you gasping, and book 2 is also the continuation of their story! But don’t worry, they get their HEA at the end of book 2. 🖤
No spoilers --read on Kindle via Kindle Unlimited.
Oh my goodness. My first dark sports romance and it did not disappoint. This book was hot and heavy, and then it was like HOLY **** at the end. I was instantly hooked on this storyline. I have never doubted Brittany Ann's writing, but I did not expect it to be this AMAZING for her first book. For most authors who are great writers, their first is alright/good and then each book after typically gets better. BUT dang, she came out HOT and READY to destroy her readers. If you want all the feels in a book, this book will not disappoint you. I finished this early in the morning, and I was not ready for that ending! THAT CLIFFHANGER. Ouch. You know I had to start book #2 right away after reading that.
Would I recommend it? HECK YES! If you are okay with the trigger warnings and want a dark sports romance, you need to read this. Even if you aren't a sports romance reader, but love the dark romance you still to read this.
